CLIFTON PARK - The Mohawk Towpath Byway and its municipal partners are planning a Byway Summit on March 20, 2014, at the Century House in Latham. The purpose of the summit will be to accept an action plan for scenic conservation and corridor enhancement, to optimize economic development, heritage and ecotourism and the local quality of life in this portion of the Mohawk Valley. Municipalities will be asked to identify and evaluate projects and initiatives. The Mohawk Towpath Byway was established in 2003 by New York State. It follows the route of the historic Erie Canal between Cohoes, Waterford and Schenectady. As one travels the Byway they discover the story of the waterway west, the Erie Canal and the role our communities played in the westward expansion of the country and the Industrial Revolution. It became one of America’s Byways© in 2005. Congressman Paul Tonko is the invited keynote speaker for the event. The Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Coalition is the not-for-profit corporation consisting of the eight municipalities through which the Byway passes over local, county, state and federal highway segments within Clifton Park, Colonie, Cohoes, Halfmoon, Niskayuna, Schenectady and Waterford.

PROJECT EASTER BUNNY HOPPING MARCH 17TH-31ST DONATIONS OF NEW SMALL TOYS AND CANDY NEEDED!

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Floydwarriors.com “Helping Families Cope With Cancer, One Household at a Time” is very pleased to announce its 5th annual run of Project Easter Bunny. This effort was begun by floydwarriors.com founder Lisa Morahan after experiencing Easter Sunday in 2009 too ill to make one basket up for her son while in the middle of chemotherapy treatment. In 2010 enough toys and candy were collected to make up 100 baskets, 135 in 2011, 190 in 2012 and 225 in 2013. Our goal is to collect enough new small toys and candy for 250 baskets this year! Several area cancer organizations and hospitals caring for cancer patients will receive this year’s bounty so children of those in treatment will have a nice big basket to open on Easter morning. Locations to receive baskets hope to include The CR Wood Center at Glens Falls Hospital, Samaritan Hospital, The Mollie Wilmott Radiation Oncology Center at Saratoga Hospital, The Community Hospice of Saratoga, The Hope Club in Latham, New York Oncology Hematology of Albany, CRAAB, To Life! and families helped by Simplifying Lives and floydwarriors. com. If you are interested in helping this effort please bring unopened candy and brand new small toys to donate to the following locations between March 17th -31st: The CR Wood Center in Glens Falls Hospital, The Malta Community Center, Bella Rouge at Clifton Park Center, The Hope Club in Latham and all Ballston Spa National Bank locations. For info visit www.floydwarriors.com.

There’s a lot of talk about Tech Valley’s manufacturers and the excitement generated by modern, high-tech businesses. Giant companies surround our peaceful, southern Saratoga County suburbs, bringing opportunity and a relatively high standard of living to a generation of workers. The optimism isn’t confined to large companies, as smaller entrepreneurs try their hand at marketing a new invention or business concept. For example, independent firms such as Carma Systems, Inc., a local manufacturer of computerized monitoring Pete Bardunias, systems for fleet vehicles, are developing cutting-edge President/CEO, the Chamber management software technology. Nick Cosimano, of Southern Saratoga County EVP of Business Development, is one of the talented businesspeople you’ll find at chamber mixers these days, eager to demonstrate the versatility of his company’s products. For every success story like Carma Systems, there are many other startups who struggle to get their business off the ground. For this reason a new Federally-funded initiative has been established, to assist small and medium sized manufacturing companies in obtaining resources to improve and grow their businesses. Called FuzeHub, it’s comprised of dedicated and experienced professionals who act as a rapid response team to address urgent and immediate concerns of inquiring businesses. FuzeHub is supported by organizations such as the Center for Economic Growth in Albany, and the Empire State Development Corporation. Next week, on Thursday, March 20, 2014, the Capital Region Chapter of the American Marketing Association and The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County will be co-sponsoring a luncheon at the Century House in Latham to help local manufacturing interests become familiar with the capabilities of the FuzeHub initiative. Executive Director Laura Mann will join Kim Lloyd, CEO of Rock the Deadline and Content Director Steve Melito in a presentation on a new web portal fueled by content marketing. New techniques in marketing businesses are vital tools necessary to compete in today’s highly competitive economy. Visit www.southernsaratoga.org/events for more details on this exciting event.

HEALTH FAIR CLIFTON PARK - On March 27 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm the Shenendehowa Adult Community Center, 6 Clifton Common Court, Clifton Park, will hold their annual Health Fair. We will have nurses, chiropractors, insurance providers, hearing aid care specialists, senior living facilities, and several other health care organizations on hand to answer questions, discuss basic needs, and provide free giveaways and handouts. Participating businesses include CDPHP, Ellis Hosptal, Miracle Ear, MVP, St. Peter’s, Atria Shaker, Wynwood, Clare Bridge, Home Instead, and Saratoga County Office of Aging, to name a few. This event is free and open to the public. Contact the Center for more information at 383-1343.

FAMOUS IRISH ARTISTS

Though many people with no connection to Ireland celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the day is, in fact, a celebration of Saint Patrick and the rich culture of the land he helped to overcome paganism. Ireland has produced many noted artists, including actors such as Richard Harris and Cillian Murphy, musicians like the rock band U2 and composer Patrick Cassidy, and writers such as James Joyce and George Bernard Shaw. While many of these and other notable Irish artists are household names, Irish artists whose talents rested with their paint brushes are less widely known. The following are a handful of Irish artists whose influence is still felt today. * Frank O’Meara: Though he passed away from complications of malaria at the age of 35, O’Meara made a considerable impact during his short career, which began when he studied at the studio of Carolus-Duran, the famed portrait painter, in Paris, France. O’Meara’s painting style, which was known to be especially slow, coupled with his short life, did not produce a vast catalog, though he is recognized as one of the first “plein-air,” or open air, Irish artists who insisted on painting outside to benefit from natural light. * Daniel Maclise: A chance encounter with Sir Walter Scott helped this famed portrait painter get his career off the ground. When the “Rob Roy” author was traveling in Ireland, Maclise encountered him in a bookseller’s shop and promptly drew a sketch of the famed novelist, playwright and poet, who liked the sketch so much he lithographed it and showed it to friends, increasing the demand for Maclise’s talents. Though he spent much of his professional life in London, Maclise’s work is prominently displayed in his native Ireland. * Edward Delaney: Born in County Mayo in 1930, Delaney, who passed away in 2009, was a renowned Irish sculptor, perhaps most famous for his famine memorial at St. Stephen’s Green in Dublin, Ireland’s capital and most populous city. Delaney is also known for his statue of Wolfe Tone, the Irish revolutionary widely regarded as the father of Irish republicanism, and Thomas Davis, the revolutionary Irish writer who promoted the Irish identity throughout his writings. Delaney’s works continue to be displayed throughout the Emerald Isle and even overseas, including at the Central Bank of Ireland in Dublin and at the First National Bank of Chicago. * Nano Reid: A famed landscape artist, Reid studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and today is widely considered one of the finest female Irish painters of the 20th century. Over the course of her career, Reid, who was famed for her landscape paintings but also involved in portrait art and figure painting, showed numerous works at Dublin’s Royal Hibernian Academy. Supporters considered Reid a genius, and her works continue to be shown, both in Ireland and in the United States.

CHEF/OWNER JOHN MARZILLI

EXPLAINING THE MYTHICAL LEPRECHAUN

Celtic culture is ripe with legends and myths that help to entertain and explain the mysteries of life. Among such lore are leprechauns, which are mythological figures that continue to impart whimsy into St. Patrick’s Day celebrations even now. The word “leprechaun” is derived from the Irish lu chorpain, meaning “small body.” Various attributes have been used to describe leprechauns. While the origins and Chef/Owner the history surrounding John Marzilli leprechauns differ, one common thread is that these creatures are surrounded in magic. Some “2007 Entrepreneur of the Year” - Southern Saratoga believed leprechauns were descendents of the Goddess Danu and theChamber Tuatha De Danaan. They inhabited Ireland long before the Celts arrived, and when the Celts did come, brandishFantasia “One of the Best Family Restaurants in Saratoga County” - Ruth ing iron swords that could penetrate the leprechauns’ magic, leprechauns fled to underground 2006“Culinarian of the Year” A.C.F.say leprechauns still reside abodes in the soil shielded by magical, hidden entrances. Some under the damp soil. Other stories describe leprechauns as smart, devious creatures of fairy folk who were the only fairies to have a profession other than cattle trading. Leprechauns were shoemakers to the fairies who took the shape of men wearing green or red coats and hats and participated in email the mischief. Leprechauns hoarded allchef:johnmarzilli@saltyspub.com of their gold coins in a pot under a rainbow. Catching a leprechaun was tricky, as these “wee folk,” as they were often described in folk tales, were quite adept at remaining out of arm’s reach. Should one be captured by a human, folklore stated that the leprechaun must grant three wishes to earn his release. Some viewed leprechauns as serious sorts, keeping people away from sacred places and helping to control people’s behaviors. Historians believe this was one for leaders to establish societal rules. Descriptions of leprechauns and tales of their antics have survived in Ireland for centuries. When the Irish began emigrating to America during the Great Potato Famine, they brought with them their mythology and stories. However, the tale of the leprechaun has changed over time. The Irish-American view of the leprechaun differed from the more traditional Irish view. Americans saw leprechauns as frivolous and silly. Leprechauns were depicted with broad, pug noses and out-of-style ratty clothing. Many negative stereotypes Americans directed at the swarms of Irish immigrants arriving in the United States were exemplified in the insensitive and, at times, hateful illustrations of leprechauns.

CALLING ALL MENTORS!

CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518688-3010 ext 102, or email Avon@scherffinsurance.com.

Whitey

American Eskimo Mix 8 Year Old Male, White

Hi Friends, I’m Whitey. I came to the humane society with my “wife” Bella. Our parents couldn’t care for us anymore so we are waiting patiently for a new family to love. I am a little more outgoing than Bella and love to play and explore. We’ve never been around kids so a quiet home might be best for us. I have a beautiful, snowy white coat and love to sit and be brushed. Do you have room in your house and heart for me and maybe my sweetheart too?

Amelia

Domestic Short Hair Mix, 4 Year Old Female, Black/White

My name is Amelia. I was surrendered by my previous owners because they could no longer care for me. I am a timid gal, but if you give me time and a quiet home I will definitely warm up to you. I previously lived with dogs, other cats, ferrets and rabbits! The folks here at the shelter have also discovered I love to be brushed, so this may help me get comfortable in a new environment. Please ask to meet me, as I would very much like a forever home.

Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. LMCC

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TIRES MAKE A DIFFERENCE Drivers rarely think of the tires on their vehicles until they have a flat. But the type of tires on your vehicle can impact its performance. When choosing tires for their vehicles, drivers should consider a host of factors, including the terrain and driving conditions vehicles are likely to encounter. Understanding tires and what makes some a better fit than others for certain vehicles can make for safe driving and improved handling.

The most common type of OPEN: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm; Saturday 8am-Noon 664-7346 tire and arguably the best known is the standard all-season tire. Many vehicles come equipped with these tires, which are designed to be versatile enough to grip the road in various conditions. They are commonly made of a harder rubber that will not wear out quickly and will retain their tread. Most day-to-day driving can be done on all-season tires.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE TIRES People who live in dry climates or drive sports and racing cars can benefit from high-performance tires. These tires are specifically designed to grip the road better and offer superior handling under higher speeds. Because high-performance tires are made of a softer rubber compared to standard tires, they will not last as long as all-season tires. SNOW TIRES People who live in snowy, icy conditions will benefit from the use of snow tires. These tires are designed with special treads to offer more traction in slippery conditions. The rubber used to manufacture the tire can remain flexible even at extremely low temperatures. Winter tires are best reserved for extreme weather and not used all season long because they will wear out more quickly than others. They may not have the same level of traction on clear roads. In some cases, winter tires may have metal studs included to enhance traction in icy situations. People who do not want to switch tires when cold weather arrives sometimes invest in snow chains that improve traction on standard tires. MUD TIRES Muddy areas can be just as slippery as snowy conditions. Mud tires are designed similarly to snow tires but will have extra grooves and a tread pattern that facilitates movement of mud away from the tires and road. Mud tires may be wider than standard tires as well.

TRUCK TIRES Drivers of trucks or sport-utility vehicles often need special truck tires. These tires can better handle the weight and size of a larger vehicle. Many drivers stick with the type of tire that originally came with their truck. Drivers who like to go off-roading may need an all-terrain tire to offer more traction when climbing hills or traversing different conditions. It can be easy to overlook the importance of tires, but tires help vehicles remain on the road and can affect mileage, maneuverability and safety.
