• Use cruise control wisely. Drivers concerned about fuel economy may be accustomed to turning on their vehicles’ cruise control when driving long distances on the highway. While that is an effective and fuel-efficient way to maintain steady speeds, turn cruise control off when traversing roads with steep hills. On such roads, fuel efficiency can be lost because the vehicle engine is working harder to maintain steady speeds. • Tighten the gas cap. When gas caps are loose, fuel evaporates. The Car Care Council notes that loose, missing or damaged gas caps contribute to the evaporation of roughly 147 million gallons of gas per year. That’s both wasteful and costly. When filling up at the gas station, turn the cap until your hear it click. Driving efficiently can make roadways safer, benefit the environment and save drivers considerable amounts of money.

HOW WAXING BENEFITS A VEHICLE

Car and truck owners recognize that a certain measure of upkeep is necessary to maintain safe, efficient and good-looking vehicles. Making sure what’s under the hood — and under the chassis — is in excellent condition is important. So, too, is safeguarding against damage to the exterior of a car or truck. One of the ways to protect against environmental damage is to wax the vehicle. Bird droppings, rain, salt, and sun can take their toll on a vehicle, and waxing can help combat these often inevitable environmental factors. The experts at Popular Mechanics say that, even though modern paint jobs have improved considerably in recent years, wax formulations have improved as well. Both can work wonders with regard to defending against color erosion, scratches and dullness. Furthermore, waxing increases resale value at trade-in time and can make it easier to clean vehicles. The consumer advocates at Angie’s List recommend that vehicles be waxed not less than twice a year. However, many detailers advise drivers to have their vehicles waxed once every three months, or one time per season.

HOW TO DRIVE MORE EFFICIENTLY

Many people aspire to drive more efficiently in an attempt to conserve fuel, save money and reduce the carbon footprints of their vehicles. But driving efficiently can also make driving safer for motorists, their passengers and everyone else, including pedestrians, sharing the roads.

In addition to protecting a vehicle from the elements, waxing provides the following benefits. • Deep shine: Wax is the easiest way to make a vehicle look brand new again. While a carnauba-based wax may be recommended, many synthetic waxes are now available, and such products provide excellent shine capabilities as well. • Fills in scratches: While wax will not remove scratches, it can fill in shallow scratches to make them less visible. • Reduces friction: Car wax smooths the surface of the paint and will reduce the friction between debris and the car’s exterior. This means debris will be more likely to slide right off than cause paint to chip.

Drivers who want to drive more efficiently can implement a variety of strategies to do just that.

• Catches contaminants: Airborne contaminants will be trapped in the wax rather than settle into paint and etch the car or truck.

• Obey the speed limits. Speed limits are determined with safety in mind, and drivers should always adhere to posted speed limits to protect themselves, their passengers and others on the road. The U.S. Department of Transportation notes that, in 2015, 27 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths were speeding-related. But according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, obeying the speed limit is also cost-effective. The EPA notes that miles per gallon begins to dip dramatically when vehicles travel above 55 miles per hour. While each vehicle is different, the EPA notes that increasing highway cruising speed from 55 miles per hour to 75 miles per hour can raise fuel consumption by as much as 20 percent.

A number of tests can indicate when a car needs a new coat of wax. The water-beading test is one such test. If the water beads up nicely while washing or during a light rain, the wax is still performing. If the water runs in large “sheets,” it’s time for a new coat of wax.

• Do not idle a vehicle. The Environmental Defense Fund notes that electronic engines do not need to warm up, even in winter when temperatures are especially cold. Vehicles that are idling can produce as much pollution as vehicles that are in motion, and idling for as little as 10 seconds wastes more gas than restarting the engine. Drivers concerned about overtaxing their engines shortly after starting them can warm their engines by easing into their drives and avoiding excessive revving.

Before waxing, the vehicle should be clean, dry and free of contaminants. Afterward, work in a shady area. Work carefully, but do not go so slowly that the wax dries too quickly. Do not apply the wax too heavily; a little goes a long way. Try to keep it even during application. Buff the wax with a microfiber towel when done.

Drivers can conduct the towel test as well after the car is washed and completely dried. The resource How To Auto offers guidance on how to perform this test: Fold a 100-percent cotton terry cloth towel until it’s hand-sized and thick. Apply firm pressure to the car’s surface and twist the cloth back and forth in a clockwise and counter-clockwise direction. If you hear a squealing noise, then it’s time for a wax job.

Waxing remains an important part of vehicle maintenance, safeguarding a vehicle from the elements while also keeping the car or truck looking new.

FOLLOW THESE CHILD SAFETY SEAT REGULATIONS

Protecting young children in automobiles should be of the utmost importance for parents when on the road. Studies have shown that children who are seated in age- and size-appropriate vehicle restraint systems may be at a significantly lower risk of sustaining serious or fatal injuries during motor vehicle crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Traffic crashes account for the leading cause of death among children in the United States. Because of their diminutive statures, kids who suffer injuries in motor vehicle accidents may fair far worse than adults who suffer similar injuries.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Highway Loss Data Institute states that all 50 states and the District of Columbia have child safety seat laws. Child safety seat laws require that children travel in approved child restraints or booster seats, and some permit or require older children to use adult safety belts. For up-to-date regulations regarding specific states or U.S. territories, drivers can consult with their state’s or territory’s Highway Safety Offices. These offices will provide detailed explanations of height and weight limits and when children can be moved between seats. For example, in New Jersey, children under 2 years of age and under 30 pounds must ride in rear-facing infant seats. Children who are under 40 pounds and up to 4 years of age can be moved to forward-facing seats only if they have exceeded the weight limits of rear-facing seats. Children under the age of 8 and a height of 57 inches may move to a beltpositioning booster seat. Once children grow taller than 57 inches or reach age 8, it is safe for them to ride in properly secured seat belts. Canadian regulations By law, Canadian children must be secured in a car seat made for their weight and height. As regulations vary in the provinces and territories, it is essential that drivers read the provincial/territorial regulations for laws in their areas. According to Transport Canada, there are four stages of safety seat usage for children. Stage 1 begins with rear-facing seats placed at a 45-degree angle so that the baby’s head is supported. When the child outgrows the car seat’s weight and height limits, he or she can move on to a forward-facing seat (Stage 2). However, it is best to leave the child rear-facing as long as possible to prevent head injury. Forward-facing seats have harness straps that are more narrow than vehicle seat belts and fit children’s small shoulders. Children should be snugly harnessed. The seat also should be

MASTER THE WEDDING SAVE-THE-DATE

Many couples’ weddings take more than a year to plan. Couples want all of the special people in their lives to witness their vows, and giving guests advance notice can ensure as many loved ones as possible attend the ceremony. To be certain that guests have ample notice to clear their

schedules, many couples now turn to save-the-date cards, which announce weddings well in advance of the actual wedding day. Save-the-date cards once were reserved only for weddings that required travel or special circumstances, such as destination weddings. But such cards have now become commonplace for all weddings. That’s because many people plan vacations or business trips anywhere from four to six months in advance. Busy people require plenty of notice to include this important date on their calendars, particularly when wedding dates fall during popular travel seasons or around the holidays. Kleinfeld Bridal, a premiere New York bridal boutique,

says that save-the-date cards are typically mailed six to eight months prior to the wedding, though some are sent as early as a year before the big day. Once a date and a location is secured, savethe-dates can be ordered and mailed. Save-the-date cards require couples to assemble their guest lists well in advance of the wedding. The leading bridal resource The Knot notes that everyone who will get a wedding invitation should also receive a savethe-date card. There’s no turning back once cards are sent, so couples will need to be certain everyone they want to attend is getting advanced notice. It’s acceptable to mail savethe-date cards even if some wedding day details are still up in the air. Guests really only need to know the date and location of the wedding. Couples also can use the save-the-date card to direct invitees to a wedding website where guests can learn the details of the wedding as they unfold. RSVP information does not need to be included on the save-the-date card. Save-the-date cards are much less formal than invitations, so couples can have fun with them. They can showcase couples’ clever personalities or funny quirks. Keep in mind it is in poor taste to mention gifts or registries on save-the-date cards. There will be plenty of time to direct guests to registries later on. Couples are increasingly turning to save-the-date cards when planning their weddings to make sure busy friends and family will have enough time to make plans to attend their weddings.

NOVENA PRAYER THROUGH application to the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you even and in spite of all material illusion. I wish to be with you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer for three consecutive days. After three days the favor requested will be granted, even if it may appear difficult. This prayer must be published immediately after the favor is granted without mentioning the favor. Only your initials should appear at the bottom.

GETTING THE BETTER OF GREASE: HOW DIYERS AND MECHANICS CAN COMBAT GREASE AND STAINS

(MS) — Seasoned do-ityourselfers and mechanics know that DIY projects and working on cars and trucks can sometimes be messy business. While work stations can often be cleaned in a matter of minutes, grease and other stains on clothing can linger for some time,

even remaining in the washing machine long after wash cycles have ended. Combating grease stains and their resulting odors has long been a problem for DIYers, auto mechanics and technicians. But there are ways to get the better of grease and even prevent future stains. • Act instantly. Allowing grease stains to linger on clothing can make them harder to remove. Professional mechanics and week-

end DIYers should check their work gear for stains when they finish working for the day, immediately treating any areas that have been blemished by grease or other stains. The quicker such stains are treated, the less likely they are to set and become permanent. • Treat stains with specialized detergents. Ordinary laundry detergents may effectively combat everyday stains, but such products are often ineffective at treating the stains

and grease that technicians’ work clothes are vulnerable to. Permatex®, a leading innovator in chemical technology for automotive maintenance and repair and the maker of Fast Orange® hand cleaners, has developed Fast Orange Grease X Mechanic’s Laundry Detergent (www. fastorangelaundry.com). Designed to quickly and effectively remove grease, stains, tar, oil, automotive fluids, and odors from technicians’ work clothes, Fast Orange Grease X features a built-in

pretreater that is powerful enough to remove up to 99 percent of automotive stains and odors. Ideal for professional mechanics and automotive hobbyists alike, this specially formulated detergent also disintegrates grease and soil as it cleans, ensuring no residual grease remains in the washing machine after each load. • Maintain a clean work area. Stains are a fact of life for mechanics, DIYers and hobbyists, but maintaining a

clean, clutter-free work area can reduce the risk of accidents that lead to staining. Clean work areas at the end of each workday or DIY session, being sure to put all tools and gas cans away. • Take steps to prevent future stains. New projects tend to excite DIYers, mechanics and automotive hobbyists. But before diving into a new project, professionals and novices alike can take steps to prevent the stains that can form as they learn on the job. Research how to approach a new project to reduce the likelihood of accidental spills. Washing work clothes with Fast Orange Grease X can even make work clothes less vulnerable to future stains. “When formulating Fast Orange Grease X, we added a proprietary soil release/ antistatic agent that repels future soil and stains,” said Permatex senior product manager Dan Clarke. Stains and spills come with the territory of automotive and DIY work. But mechanics and DIY enthusiasts can employ several strategies to get the better of grease and other stains.

RIDESHARING KEEPS SENIORS ON THE MOVE

Losing the ability to drive and get around is one of the most challenging aspects of growing older for seniors. This loss of independence can result in loneliness, depression and isolation. One of the ways to keep vehicles running strong for years on end is to adhere to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Although there are many factors drivers cannot control, including recalls, weather and road conditions, proper maintenance is something drivers

Check battery contacts Many modern car batteries do not require a lot of maintenance. However, one problem that may occur is a buildup of minerals or corrosion from leaking battery fluid on the contacts. In such instances, use a battery cleaning brush to clean the

contacts and then replace the cables. Tire maintenance Properly inflated, balanced and rotated tires make for a smooth, safe ride. Check that tires are wearing evenly and that the vehicle is not pulling to one side. A lack of tread on tires requires they be replaced. Because tires can be expensive, many drivers put off routine tire maintenance. But this can be a costly mistake. Tires that are worn or not properly inflated can cause skidding, problems braking and accidents. Blowouts also may occur, putting drivers, their passengers and fellow motorists in danger. It’s best to be proactive with regard to tire maintenance. Maintaining a vehicle in adherence to manufacturer guidelines can prolong the life of the car, improve its safety and increase its tradein or resale value.

Oil checks and changes are vital to engine health.
