Community Events Board more inside… CLIFTON PARK - Clifton Park Halfmoon Emergency Corps. (CPHM EMS) was recently registered as a nationally recognized Safe Sitter® Teaching Site. With this accreditation, CPHM will now be able to offer the Safe Sitter® courses which focus on life skills, safety skills, and child care training for youth.

Kitchen & Bath INSPIRATION Guide

CPHM has been offering a babysitter preparedness and safety course for many years, but have recently sought out a more robust and sophisticated curriculum. They found exactly that in Safe Sitter®, which is a medically accurate course following guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association. The course was especially developed for students grades 6th-8th and teaches Safety Skills, Child Care Skills, First Aid, CPR and Rescue Skills as well as Life and Business Skills.

CPHM has choosen to offer an extended program format which includes a more intenstive module on CPR skills, including plently of hands on practice for the students. “We are so excited about this new curriculum, especially with the opportunity to do age appropriate CPR education.” Says Leah Ferrone, Deputy Director of Community Development at CPHM.

See OUR BaCK Page ad!

“It’s a goal of ours [CPHM] to create a Heart Safe community and that means Saratoga County residents of all ages will have a working base knowledge of CPR skills and thus strengthen the Chain of Survival in the event of Sudden Cardiac Arrest.” Ferrone continues.

Add That Extra Comfort To Your Home In 2018!

plans to offer the course on a consistent, monthly basis which will be limited to 12 students per class. Registration will be $20 per student and will include the Student Handbook as well as a Babysitter Important Information Notepad. The remainder of course and training site costs are funded through CPHM’s annual Community Fund Drive.

What Car Colors May Say About Drivers

Cars and trucks may be modes of transportation, but many people see their vehicles as extensions of their personalities. The color of a vehicle can say a lot about its driver. In fact, automotive experts say color affects drivers’ decisions when they’re buying new vehicles. In 2015, a survey from PPG Automotive Coatings found the color palette of black, silver, gray, and white makes up 75 percent of new cars on the road. White has been the most popular car color for years, perhaps because neutral tones tend to look new for years, improving resale value as a result. The Pantone Color Institute periodically highlights popular trends in colors for home decorating, graphic design, fashion, and much more. Their experts know a thing about what color can say about a person. Here’s a look at how drivers may perceive themselves (and how others view them) based on their color choices in vehicles, courtesy of Pantone, NerdWallet, Thrillist, and Today.com. • White: This color — perhaps thanks to the popularity of Apple products — can often project a persona of a diligent, hardworking person. White is a dependable color that also is sleek and modern. Many people who prefer white also like the purity of the color and its perceived cleanliness. • Black: Black vehicles have stood the test of time as status symbols. Those who purchase black cars may view them as classic and powerful. Black also conveys elegance. That’s why limousines and hired cars are often black. • Silver: Silver cars may have futuristic connotations because of their metallic hues. Silver vehicles also can be elegant and prestigious. A certain element of modernity is associated with silver cars and trucks. • Gray: People who choose gray vehicles may be less concerned about status and more interested in a vehicle that blends in with the crowd. This no-nonsense hue could be ideal for cautious, even-keeled drivers who like to go with the flow. • Blue: Light blue to mid-blue cars convey a sense of calm and coolness. Blue is a dependable color and may indicate the person behind the wheel is friendly. Dark blue can be a confidence-booster and also signal authority, as many police cruisers and law enforcement uniforms feature deep blue. • Red: People who own red cars probably like flash and attention. They’re likely magnetic personalities who enjoy standing out in a crowd. • Brown/beige: These earth-toned shades may indicate a person who is not pretentious,

but easygoing and fiscally responsible. Reliability and comfort is prized above flashiness for those who go brown and beige. • Green: Green cars indicate owners who have a very strong sense of self and care little about what others think of them. They may be the people who march to the beat of their own drums. But the popularity of green cars peaked in the 1990s, so fewer green cars may be on the road today than in the past.

Did You Know?

Cars and trucks can benefit greatly from clean air filters. Many drivers are aware of the need to change the oil in their vehicles according to the intervals designated in their owners’ manuals, but few may be aware of the many benefits of changing air filters. One such benefit pertains to fuel efficiency. The automotive website CarsDirect.com notes that studies have shown that changing clogged air filters can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 10 percent and save drivers as much as 15 cents per gallon of fuel. Clean air filters also can benefit the environment. When vehicle air filters are clogged, air flow to the engine is reduced, adversely affecting vehicle emissions. Clean filters increase air flow to the engine, reducing vehicle emissions as a result. Clean air filters also can help drivers get more out of their vehicle investments. Designed to trap dirt and debris, clean air filters prolong engine life by preventing such particles from damaging engine components. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals for air filter replacement guidelines, but manufacturers generally advise drivers change their air filters every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. Such a repair is inexpensive but can go a long way toward ensuring vehicles operate as efficiently as possible.

Some Telltale Signs Of Engine Troubles

Engine troubles are many drivers’ worst nightmares. Whether they occur out on the road or they prevent drivers from leaving their driveways in the morning, engine troubles can quickly derail plans and cost drivers substantial amounts of money. Thankfully, engine troubles are often noticeable long before cars break down. Drivers who learn to recognize the signs that suggest engines might be in need of work can avoid being stranded on the road or at home. • Vehicle shaking: One telltale sign of engine trouble is when a vehicle shakes while it’s moving. Drivers of old cars and trucks may not expect the smoothest of rides, but cars that shake, sometimes violently, could be experiencing problems. Sometimes a car might shake if its spark plugs need replacing. That’s an easy, inexpensive fix that drivers can do on their own in a matter of minutes. A more serious cause of the vehicle shaking could be problems with its timing belt or fuel intake system. Drivers who inspect and/or replace their spark plugs but notice their vehicles are still shaking should take their cars into their mechanics immediately. • Sudden gas mileage reduction: Drivers who notice they’re not getting as much bang for their gas bucks as they used to might have engine troubles to blame. According to Pep Boys, a dropoff in gas mileage might be indicative of an issue in the compression stroke of the engine. Such an issue can typically be fixed by having the fuel system serviced, which will clean the fuel system and can help restore the vehicle’s performance and reduce emissions. • Noises: If driving has become as noisy as a rock concert, drivers should take heed that this could be indicative of engine trouble. Pep Boys notes that noises typically indicate abnormalities in the combustion flow. Such noises may include knocking, hissing and popping. Vehicles making these noises should be taken to a mechanic immediately. • Stalling: Vehicles that jerk or stall also may be experiencing engine troubles. While old spark plugs might be the culprit, stalling or jerking may indicate clogged fuel lines or fuel filters. Such issues may also be traced to issues with the vehicle’s computer system. Bring such issues to the attention of a mechanic, and reduce their frequency with regular oil changes.

CAR CARE

4 Simple Ways To Extend The Life Of Your Vehicle

1. Drive defensively. Aggressive driving is dangerous and can have adverse effects on a vehicle. When driving, always obey posted speed limits and avoid accelerating and decelerating quickly. Such a style of driving can strain vehicle engines and drive trains while negatively affecting fuel efficiency and wearing down brakes, states the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence. 2. Maintain a clean vehicle. Car washes do more than just clean a vehicle. Routine washing and waxing can remove dirt that, if left on a vehicle, can gradually scratch paint and contribute to chips and rust. Over time, rust can affect vehicle performance and may even compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers if bad enough frame rust affects structural integrity. Routine washing also can remove road salt from vehicles. Salt can build up during winter when roads are routinely treated during and after snowstor ms. Road salt can be extremely corrosive and, if left unremoved from a vehicle, can contribute to rust that ultimately can cause extensive damage to a vehicle. 3. Routinely check tire pressure. Many of today’s new vehicles alert drivers when tire pressure is low. Drivers should not ignore such warnings, as low tire pressure can affect engine performance by forcing it to work harder than should be necessary. Engines that are forced to work harder than they need to likely won’t last as long as those that run efficiently. Low tire pressure also negatively affects fuel efficiency, potentially costing drivers substantial amounts of money over time. Drivers of older vehicles without tire pressure alerts should routinely check tire pressure and keep tires adequately inflated. Vehicles that are slow to accelerate from resting positions may not have enough air in their tires.

The decision to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a new vehicle is not one consumers should take lightly. Once drivers purchase their new vehicles, they can protect their investments and get greater returns on those investments by prioritizing maintenance and taking simple yet effective steps to extend the lives of their cars and trucks.

intervals, and stick to those intervals for as long as they have their vehicles. Cognizant of the sizable investments they’re making when buying new vehicles, many drivers want to get as many miles out of their vehicles as possible. Simple maintenance and safe driving habits can go a long way toward keeping vehicles on the road for years to come.

ALBANY/COLONIE - The Men’s Garden Club of Albany will meet on Thursday, February 22, in the Lakeside Room at the Beltrone Living Center, 6 Winners Circle, Colonie. The program, which will start at 7:30 pm, will be presented by John McKenna, III. Mr. McKenna will relate how the death of his son Marine Captain John McKenna IV, who was killed in action, inspired him to retire and volunteer for projects to help others. His efforts led to the creation of the Albany Airport’s Military Courtesy Room for travelling military personnel. McKenna also chaired the committee for the Gold Star Family Monument in Lafayette Park in Albany. It seems appropriate to deviate from our usual garden topics to recognize these tributes on Washington’s Birthday. The program will be preceded by dinner at 6:30 pm ($25).

Eddie F’s: Where Everyone is Family by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

Nestled between Skidmore College and Broadway in Saratoga Springs is a neighborhood eatery serving New England seafood specialties: New England and Manhattan Chowder, Ipswich whole belly clams, lobster rolls, lobster mac & cheese, oysters, scallops, fish & chips, fish fry, shrimp and haddock. The eatery offers homemade salads, soups, pizzas, pastas, wings and sandwiches. Happy hour is every day from 3-6 p.m. Catering is available. Ed Fazzone and his wife, Lisa, have been running Eddie F’s since it opened in 2016. Ed is in the kitchen. Lisa is greeting the customers and running the restaurant’s social media accounts. The couple, originally from Schenectady, lived in Florida and were restaurant owners there for nearly 15 years when they decided to come home to the Capital District. They chose to settle a few exits north of Schenectady because they enjoy all that Saratoga Springs has to offer, especially the race track during the summer. “We knew it was time to come home,” Lisa said. The couple has poured their heart and soul into Eddie F’s. Lisa points at the memorabilia on the walls. There are pictures of the Saratoga Springs Race Track, pictures of Ed with various jockeys, and patches from first responders all belonging to Ed. “We didn’t just put random things on the walls,” Lisa said. “This is all Ed.” Lisa and Ed grew up about a block apart in Schenectady. Their families knew each other. Lisa learned how to run a restaurant from watching her grandfather. He owned an Italian restaurant on State Street in Schenectady. Lisa remembers watching her father, uncle and grandfather spend countless hours cooking in the restaurant’s kitchen. “We are third-generation restaurant owners,” Lisa said, “It is in our blood.” And now Ed and Lisa’s daughter and son-in-law have relocated from Florida to join the family restaurant. Their son-in-law has cooked with Ed since he was 15-years old. Lisa happily cares for her grandchildren while her daughter staffs the restaurant. “We really are a family affair,” Lisa said. She laughingly explains that she and Ed can’t convince their son to join the business. Despite working together most days, Ed and Lisa close the restaurant on Sundays for “family day.” On Sundays they will sometimes explore the other restaurants in Saratoga Springs. “We love to eat,” Lisa said. “And we love to eat at other restaurants in town.” Lisa said that she and Ed are happy to support other local restaurant owners because they’ve been so supportive of them. “Everyone, especially the customers, have been so supportive of our journey,” she said. The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce is also a fan of the restaurant. “Ed and I love the chamber. They have been so supportive,” Lisa said. Ed and Lisa take pride in knowing most of the people that come into the restaurant on a daily basis. “We know many of our customers by name,” Lisa said. “They have become an extension of our family.” Ed agrees with Lisa. “We really focus on the locals,” he said. Lisa said they appreciate their loyal patrons. “They are here with us all year – not just during the summer months. We really are cooking for the people that live in these neighborhoods,” she said. It is for the local patrons that Lisa and Ed try to keep the atmosphere at the restaurant fun. “We play the music a little bit louder. The TV is on with the game on or something light. They know the owners are here. We are bringing their food out and sometimes sitting at the table with them to catch up,” Lisa said. The eatery recently celebrated its first anniversary and the neighborhood came out to celebrate with them. “We had a packed house here for the celebration,” Ed said. “It was nice to see everyone, visit with them, everyone was smiling and enjoying the food. That’s why we do this. It’s all about good people and good food.” Any Wednesday is a great day for one of Eddie’s famous Lobster Rolls for just $16 (comes with fries or onion rings and slaw), including Valentine’s Day (reservations are still available)! For more information visit Eddie F’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/eddiefseatery/ Emily Marcason-Tolmie, a Saratoga native, is a writer, researcher, wife and mother. Emily and her husband, Ryan, are the parents to two wonderful little boys, ages 4 and 1.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week

The 6 Minis

A couple of weeks ago we got a call that the Regional Humane Society in Alabama was overflowing with puppies and they were about to euthanize to clear the shelter. We immediately sent one of our rescue partners to the shelter to pick up as many as she could fit in her transport van. We rescued over 32 dogs that day. These pups are the ones that are ready for transport this week! We believe that they are Lab mixes that are around 7-9 weeks old and are very sweet. These good looking puppies are very thankful to have rescue!

so glad that they were saved from the streets and can’t wait to come up North to find their forever homes!

These three puppies were picked up by Animal Control as strays on the streets of South Carolina. They are littermates who all stuck together for safety and warmth! They are Lab mixes who we believe are about 10 weeks old, and we just love their adorable matching names! They are very happy, active puppies who are

This pretty Lady was found as a stray, roaming the street in Alabama and looking for safe haven. She was brought into a shelter and she had been sitting for a long time, waiting for someone to come and get her. Her time was running out and we couldn’t bear to see poor Lady not find a loving home! She is a Doxi mix who we believe is around 8 years old, and she weighs about 13 pounds. We think she would make an absolutely perfect companion for an older couple who is looking for a sweet, loving, and quiet little dog who likes to cuddle!

CROSSWORD TAMBORA

This winter has certainly brought plenty of crazy weather. As annoyingly frigid as recent weather has seemed, can you imagine if winter continued right on through summer? Well, that is exactly what happened in 1816; a year nearly two hundred years ago that produced snow and frost in June, frost in July and another killing frost in August. 1816 was known as “The Year There Was No Summer” and “Eighteen Hundred and Froze to Death”. A volcano called Tambora explosively erupted in Indonesia in April of 1815. This eruption is regarded by many as the largest eruption in recorded history. The size and violence of this eruption forced an estimated 100 CUBIC MILES of dust, ash and sulfuric acid into the stratosphere. Many scientists feel that this dust and ash was responsible for “The Year There Was No Summer”. Let’s take a look at what they endured. The winter of 1815-1816 was a cold one that started early and lingered late. This was not uncommon and these northern farmers had endured many long winters and late spring cold. April and May were cold but most managed to get their crops planted. By early June, the leaves were out on the trees, the corn was up and vegetable gardens were in and growing. It looked like the long winter was over at last. Then things began to go terribly wrong. On June 5th in Williamstown, Mass., the temperature was a balmy 83 degrees, warm for that early in the season. By the next morning, the temperature was 45 degrees and still falling. This cold arctic air wasn’t isolated to Williamstown. From Canada to Virginia cold arctic air caused killing frosts to occur June 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Thousands of birds that had recently migrated into the area from the south froze to death. Sheep, recently shorn, froze to death even though they were brought inside. Farmers built bonfires around their fields to try to save the crops but all to no avail. Even the leaves on all the trees froze, blackened and fell to the ground. There was snow in New York and New England and on the June 6th 7th and 8th as far south as the Catskills. In Danville, Vermont the newspaper reports: “On the night of the 7th and morning of the 8th a kind of sleet or exceedingly cold snow fell, attended by high wind, and measured in places where it drifted 18 to 20 inches in depth. Saturday morning (8th of June) the weather was more severe than it generally is in the winter.” Standing water froze as far south as Philadelphia and in northern Vermont the ice was an inch thick. Even the ground started to freeze! By the 12th of June, the outbreak of cold ended. The hard work of planting was repeated. Farmers knew that, in spite of the late start, they still had enough time to get a decent crop of corn and beans and such….if the weather cooperated for the rest of the season. For four weeks the weather held. The second planting Frost on a rose. sprouted and was growing well. Folks felt a bit foolish about their earlier fears and chalked it up to their renowned New England weather. Their good cheer was not to last. At the end of the first week in July another, although less severe, outbreak of arctic air spilled over New England and eastern New York. All the crops in the valleys (where most of the farms were) were again killed or badly damaged. Most felt that a widespread famine was inevitable. Those who could procure seed again replanted and everyone prayed. It seemed that God himself had turned against them. After the first week of July, things returned to normal for a few more weeks. In addition to the cold in 1816, it was a dry year as well. In spite of their earlier failures, the farmers were optimistic that, if they got a break in September, things would be all right. Alas, another killing frost on August 20th visited much of New England and New York as far south as East Windsor, Conn. From Albany to Boston most of the crops again succumbed. Whatever survived that frost was finished off by an even colder spell during the last week of the month. As if that weren’t enough, temperatures dipped below freezing again September 11th and 12th. A more widespread frost at the end of September dashed any hope for crops that had managed to escape until then. The winter of 1816-1817 was indeed a winter of despair. Many tried to survive on milk and bread but bread was in short supply. It was a blessing that the ocean off New England’s coast was so bountiful. The task of feeding New England fell to the fishermen. Many landlubbers who had never eaten fish became very familiar with the taste of mackerel during 1817. When the snow and the cold get you down remember, it could be a lot worse. We may be sick and tired of winter weather but it’s nothing when compared to the trials the weather of 1816 put our ancestors through. Thanks for the read.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. • More torque: The resource “For Dummies” says that, because of the way diesel vehicles burn fuel, their engines provide more torque to the driveshaft than gasoline engines. As a result, they may have greater towing capacity and accelerate more quickly from a standing start than vehicles with gasoline engines.

www.tonymangino.com • www.tonymangino.com • www.tonymangino.com • www.tonymangino.com • www.tonymangino.com

• No radio frequency: Diesels do not emit radio frequency because they do not require high-voltage ignition systems. This prevents issues with a vehicle’s electronic system, including frequency interference. • Cheaper fuel: Although diesel fuel costs more per gallon at the pump in the United States, the overall fuel cost for kilowatts runs between 30 and 50 percent lower than for gasoline-powered engines, says Carophile. That can add up to considerable savings over time. • Synthetic fuel acceptance: Diesel engines may run on

non-petroleum-based biofuels more easily than gas engines, which will need to be significantly modified to accept alternative fuels. • Less CO: Diesel engines produce minimal carbon monoxide, which is why diesel engines are the choice in environments where gasoline engine exhaust would be deadly, such as in closed-in spaces. Motorists looking to reduce their automotive carbon footprints may want to give serious consideration to vehicles with diesel engines.
