Affordable Getaway Ideas For Valentine’s Day February, when Valentine’s Day serves as the official day of love and affection, is a great to embark on a romantic vacation, especially if that getaway is to a warmer locale that can help men and women momentarily forget about the snowstorms and colder temperatures back home. Some resorts and travel-based businesses take advantage of Valentine’s Day by inflating prices to capitalize on gift-giving. However, many others use this time of year to offer specialized sales and discounts to help boost business through the remainder of the winter season. It is possible to enjoy an indulgent trip without having to spend a fortune. * Consider cruising. There are cruises that depart from various ports all year long. All it takes is a call to a cruise line or logging on to their Web sites to check the scheduling. For those unopposed to flying to a different port, you may be able to broaden your options with regard to cruise destinations and departing dates. Cruises are advantageous because they are all-inclusive, self-contained vacations. Couples who don’t want the hassle of packing and unpacking several times and want their meals and entertainment planned out ahead of time might find cruising is their trip. There also is the ability to visit different ports of call all in one trip, ensuring there is never a dull moment. * Look into winery packages. Wineries may be doing their planting and harvesting in the warmer weather, but come the winter they may be facing a slow-down in foot traffic and may be eager to attract business. Sampling different vintages and spending time in an often adultsonly environment can be an ideal way to spend a Valentine’s Day weekend. Make it an overnight trip and stay nearby in a hotel. Some wineries Cruising is often a romantic option for Valentine’s may offer a restaurant on premises or work with Day vacations. a local establishment to provide package deals. * Visit your closest city. Many people living in the suburbs seldom make trips into downtown unless they are regular commuters for work. Even those who spend their weekdays in an urban area may never have experienced all of the little gems that attract tourists. For Valentine’s Day, you may want to see your urban center through the eyes of a visitor, taking advantage of the museums, cultural centers and buildings that attract tourists throughout the year. Chances are the trip will not be costly, and you’ll be close to home. * Take in live music. There’s something romantic about listening to music together. Investigate upcoming concerts in your area. Some coffee shops and bars host open-mic nights when budding artists can be heard. Check to see if any smaller venues are hosting intimate, acoustic concerts by popular bands. It can be a memorable night and one that doesn’t break the bank. * Trade time-share dates with others. Time shares are great ways to have a dedicated vacation spot that you are guaranteed during a certain time each year. There are time-share swapping sites like TimeShareJuice.com. Find out if you can exchange your requisite time with another and take your vacation in honor of Valentine’s Day. * Consider a private rental situation. Many people who own vacation homes list them for rent when they are unoccupied. You may be able to stay in a larger condo or space than a traditional hotel room for a smaller cost than going to a hotel. If you develop a rapport with a particular renter, you may have preference of dates and can make visiting a tropical island or another retreat a yearly Valentine’s Day adventure. Try VRBO.com to find a rental property in your desired location. Going away for Valentine’s Day need not be an expensive venture. There are many ways to save money and enjoy a much-needed romantic escape.

Did You Know? The Super Bowl presents many moments to make plays for the record books. Athletes have scored places in history with their memorable performances in the Super Bowl. For example, wide receiver Jerry Rice, no stranger to the Super Bowl during his days with the San Francisco 49ers, holds the Super Bowl record for the most receiving yards in a single game after hauling in 215 yards on 11 catches in Super Bowl XXIII in 1989 against the Cincinnati Bengals. The 49ers won the game 20-16.

GAME DAY SPECIALS Throw A Sensational Super Bowl Party The culmination of the American football season is on the horizon. The first AFL-NFL World $ LB. Championship Game in proPer $ fessional American football, Doz. later known as Super Bowl SALADS • SUBS • MEAT PLATTERS, I, was played on January 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles MePASTRIES & BREAD EVERY FRIDAY! morial Coliseum in Los AnWE NOW CARRY POLISH BEERS geles, California. The Green LOWEST PRICES IN THE AREA! Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs. Since that day, ardent fans and novices alike have been celebrating football by hosting their own viewing parties at home. These parties present yet another way for friends to get together. As the opening kickoff draws closer, here are some keys to Super Bowl party success. * Know your playing field. Your home is only so big, and that means you will have to limit the number of people you can invite. Crowding too many people into the house can be uncomfortable and dangerous, never mind trying to talk and hear above the cacophony of too many people. Take inventory of how many you can seat comfortably. You may need to move out larger furniture and move in folding chairs if you plan to accommodate more guests. If you live in a warmer climate, you may be able to hook up the television outside and host an outdoor event in the yard. This will enable even more people to attend.

*Establish your play book. Will this be a chips-and-dips type of party or will you be offering more substantial fare? Is it adults-only or are guests able to bring their kids along? Make a list of questions that need to be answered and set up the party parameters. This way you will know what to stock up on in advance. Consider allocating a separate room in the house for kids’ play or for adults who are there for the social aspect of the party and will not necessarily be glued to the television. * Check your equipment. What is the Super Bowl without a means to watch the game? Retailers often offer the best deals on new televisions this time of year because they know sports fans want to upgrade their televisions for the big game. If yours is a TV that has seen better days or doesn’t offer the high-definition picture guests have come to expect, this may be the time to cash in holiday gift cards for a new flat-screen. If buying new isn’t a possibility at this time, there are centers that will rent electronics. * Watch the clock. Hardcore fans will not want to miss any of the action. Therefore, refreshments and other components of the party will have to coordinate to the timing of the game. Do the bulk of food preparation before kickoff and allow guests to mingle and fuel up before the game starts. Save finger foods and other snacks that are easily accessible for when the game starts. Guests can take a break at halftime and grab food and beverages that are set up buffetstyle in another room. Hosts and hostesses also may want to consider serving as food “butlers” and constantly come out with new finger foods on trays and go around the room to ensure everyone doesn’t miss a moment of the game. Super Bowl parties are fun ways to enjoy the last football game of the season and have a houseful of guests celebrate and socialize.

Ingredients Marinade: 1/3 cup vegetable oil • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1 teaspoon chili powder • 1 teaspoon oregano • 1 teaspoon kosher salt 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar Blue Cheese Dip 1/2 cup Mayonnaise • 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tablespoon onion, grated 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1/3 cup blue cheese, crumbled Directions Preheat the barbecue on high. Cut each wing at the joint to make two pieces, and discard wing tip if still attached. In a large re-sealable bag, whisk together vegetable oil, garlic, spices and vinegar. Add chicken wings and toss to coat. If using rotisserie basket, spray or brush lightly with vegetable oil to prevent sticking. Place chicken wings on bottom of basket, cover with the top part, and fasten on tightest setting to secure the wings in place. Cooking grids will need to be removed, and a drip pan placed beneath. If using rear rotisserie burner, set to high. If using lower burners, set to medium. Place the basket on spit and in the rotisserie and start the motor. Cook until golden brown and crisp, about 45 minutes to an hour. If cooking directly on well oiled cooking grids, turn heat to low, and cook, turning frequently until golden brown and crisp, 30 - 45 minutes. Use an instant-read thermometer to ensure that all wings are cooked through and ready to eat. Stir together all the dip ingredients. May be made ahead of time and chilled until ready to serve with chicken wings, celery and carrots.

Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. R.M.R.

Matilda

Domestic Long Hair Mix 4 Year Old Female, Brown/Black

Hello, I’m Matilda, a beautiful lady with long tiger fur, and a white bib and white feet. I’m all grown up, just quite petite. Not long ago I was trying to make a go of it on the streets of Troy. Not a nice place to be in winter! It was pretty tough out there, and I have several broken canines to show for it. I am a friendly puss and I enjoy being petted. Being picked up does make me nervous. A forever home is what I need now, so come on in and see if I’m the one for you.

Mookie

Domestic Short Hair Mix 11 Year Old Male, Black

Hello, I’m Mookie, a black gentlecat of a certain age. Well, at first I appear black, but if you look carefully you will see that I have a lot of single white hairs everywhere. I am a large fellow who loves to cuddle on laps. I’m so friendly and affectionate. My elderly owner ran into financial difficulties and could not keep me any longer. I’m no spring chicken myself, but I am such a sweetheart. It would be a good idea to take me to your vet and work out a weight loss diet. Losing a bit would be much healthier for me. Come on in and see what a fine fellow I am.

Baskets of Hope

CLIFTON PARK – Members of The Chamber of Southern Saratoga’s Women In Business Committee are reaching out to the community for help with their charitable initiative, Baskets of Hope, which supports the daily needs of Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Services of Saratoga County (DVRC). The Committee seeks donations of women’s personal care items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. Donated items are assembled into gift bags by committee members and given to victims entering the shelter with the hope that the recipient will take comfort in knowing there are people in their own community who care and want to help. Baskets of Hope, an ongoing program of the Women in Business Committee, is now in its seventh year thanks to the support of generous Chamber and community members. Anyone who wishes to participate in this worthy program can do so by bringing donations to The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County Office at 15 Park Avenue, Clifton Park (behind the Shoppers World Plaza) during regular business hours, Mon.-Fri., 8:30am-5pm. Questions about the Baskets of Hope or the Women in Business Committee should be directed to Chamber Member Services Manager Liz Roggenbuck at 371-7748 x108 or by email at liz@southernsaratoga.org (A)

Did You Know? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it is illegal to disconnect, reset or alter a vehicle’s odometer with the intent to change the number of miles thereon. Despite the law, the NHTSA notes that perpetrating odometer fraud has gotten easier thanks to digital odometers. Since digital odometers have no moving parts, it is harder to detect if a digital odometer has been tampered with. The best way to detect odometer fraud might be with the naked eye and a vehicle history report. A driver can gauge the vehicle’s condition and examine the vehicle history report to determine if any fraudulent activity has occurred.

Bringing Our Youth To The Forefront

It’s always fun to watch our young people mature right before our very eyes. My son Jonathan turned 13 this past fall, fully a foot taller than he was the year before. Other children in our “chamber family” such as Mitchell Roggenbuck, Rachel Rigney, Joseph Kumlander, and Jay Wachala were often seen helping their Mom or Dad around the Chamber office or at events in 2012. Last year we also heard the exciting stories Pete Bardunias, of up-and-coming talents such as Anna Williams, the preteen pen maker from Glenville, or teenage musical President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County phenoms from Clifton Park such as Mike LeRoy and Talia Denis. We watched young Rachel Samuels (granddaughter of Rockland Business Association CEO Al Samuels) compete in the Double M Rodeo, and 17 year old Molly Pokrzywka represent the Saratoga County Dairy Promotion Committee as our Dairy Princess. This past week we got a real treat as Mechanicville’s Michael Bove attended the Presidential Inauguration and shared his experiences with the rest of us via Facebook and radio. The 15 year old high school sophomore got the opportunity through a student program and was in attendance as President Obama took his second oath of office. We got to experience this historic day through Michael’s eyes, and that was a really enjoyable experience. In an age where our youngsters are often criticized for having their heads buried in Nintendos and video games, it’s refreshing to see how many of our local kids are already making an impact on our communities. Let’s keep this trend going and give these children the best possible chance to succeed! On February 12 I will join a group of esteemed colleagues at NYSERDA’s Business, Government and Academia Partnerships event at TecSmart in Malta, discussing ways to help our young people mature and develop the future Tech Valley workforce. .
