CLIFTON PARK - Date: Saturday, January 21, 2017; Time: 1:30 PM; Location: Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library. Tiffany Treasures, a delightful presentation by Michael Barrett, Executive Director of the Burden Iron Works Museum, kicks off Two Towns-One Book’s sixth community read celebrating this year’s winning book. Noon at Tiffany’s by Echo Heron is an historical biographical novel based on a recently discovered cache of letters written between 1888 and 1944, artfully blending fact with fiction to draw the reader into the remarkable life of one of America’s most prolific and extraordinary women artists: Clara Wolcott Driscoll, the hidden genius behind the iconic Tiffany lamps. Michael Barrett will share the rich history of the famous Tiffany Company. Learn about local Tiffany treasures including the glorious windows of St. Paul’s and St. John’s Churches in Troy. The “Vision of the Holy City” is a world famous window that made the cover of the NY Times when it was unveiled in 1899 in St. John’s. Around 4:30 PM, when the sun is coming through the window, “you can almost see God.” Community members interested in volunteering for project activities or events should contact Linda Conklin at lconklin@nycap. rr.com. Treat Yourself to a Warm Night Out!

GUIDE TO RESTAURANT TIPPING

Tableside service is one of the benefits to dining out. Dining out can be a welcome change from preparing meals at home, and diners love that, once the meal is finished, someone else is there to clean everything up. Leaving gratuities for exemplary restaurant service may not be mandatory. However, in many areas of the world, proper dining etiquette suggests diners should tip their servers when paying for the meal. Many restaurant employees count on tips to supplement their salaries, and servers may even be paid belowaverage wages because tips are factored into their earnings.

Diners routinely struggle when leaving a gratuity. Tipping, because of the money involved, also can cause heated debates. Various experts have weighed in to help customers determine the right way to proceed with tipping. This tipping guide helps clarify when and how to tip. Etiquette experts at the Emily Post Institute concur that 15 to 20 percent is the standard rule of thumb when tipping at a sitdown dining establishment. If the restaurant is buffet-style, a 10 percent tip may be adequate. Many people leave a 20 percent tip when dining out. That has become the norm for good service. Poor service may not be worthy of such a substantial tip.

When alcoholic beverages are part of the meal, some diners prefer to tip separately. That’s because restaurants may implement a heavy markup on wine or cocktail prices. Tipping based on the bill pre-tax can be expensive. The safe recommendation is 10 to 15 percent. Those who sit at the bar before retiring to a table should offer 15 to 20 percent of the tab to the bartender; or, $1 for beer or wine, $2 for mixed drinks. iTipping.com suggests paying your bar tab before leaving for your table. Although it can be tempting to refrain from tipping when service is poor, this isn’t always the wisest idea. That’s because some restaurants employ a shift system in which all of given shift’s gratuities enter a pool and are divided by a point system. Otherwise, each individual server is responsible for tipping his or her support staff, which includes a busser, a runner, a back waiter, and/or a bartender. Rather than punish the whole lot, reduce the tip and then discuss your misgivings with the restaurant manager. Diners should know that gratuities are typically included in the bill for larger parties. Restaurants generally add an 18 percent gratuity to the bill. Restaurants put this in place to safeguard their staff. This gratuity should be mentioned on the bill or on the menu. If the service was excellent, diners may want to tip on top of the included gratuity. Diners who have gone over budget should not compensate by reducing the tip. Diners who cannot afford to tip should not dine out.

SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS

Winter can be a beautiful time of year, particularly when freshly fallen snow blankets the landscape. However, winter is also a time fraught with potential peril. The same winter weather that makes landscapes so pristine can make roads and walkways — and even being outside — dangerous.

FOREIGN AUTO SALES

HIGHEST CASH PAID

Junk Cars EMPLOYMENT

The U.S. Department of Transportation says weather-related vehicle crashes killed 6,253 people last year and injure more than 480,000 per year. These accidents most often occur when roadways are wet, snowy or icy. Yet, winter driving is not the only seasonal hazard. Here are some common winter activities and how to avoid getting hurt when engaging in them. Driving

Exercise extra caution when driving on roadways during the winter, as they may contain ice or snow. All it takes is a small coating of precipitation on roadways to make driving treacherous. Wet-looking roadways may be wet, or they may be covered by ice, and it’s difficult to tell the difference with the naked eye. Always slow down and assume you are driving on ice. Make every effort to improve visibility. This includes checking windshield washer fluid levels and ensuring windshield blades are in good working order. Snow removal

CLASSIFIEDS

Shoveling or removing snow by various methods can be strenuous work, taking even those who feel they are in good shape by surprise. A 2011 study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that an average of 11,500 snow-shoveling-related injuries and medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990 to 2006.

-

Lower back injuries, falls, injuries to the arms and hands and cardiacrelated injuries account for many of the incidents sustained while removing snow. There’s also the risk of injury from collisions with pedestrians and snow plows. Plows and bobcat-type devices can cause serious injury. Exercise caution when operating such machines. Roof snow removal

Removing snow from a roof can be a dangerous prospect. Always use the appropriate equipment, which includes telescoping poles, rather than climbing on slippery roofs. This may be a job best left for a professional, who will have fall-arrest systems and nonslip safety boots. Dressing for conditions Venturing outdoors for winter fun may be enticing, but never put your health at risk for the sake of fun. The Mayo Clinic says hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Wear appropriate clothing to prevent hypothermia, which may not produce any initial symptoms. If shivering stops or confusion and slurred speech set in, severe hypothermia is in effect and a person should be moved indoors and gently warmed. Mild hypothermia is also possible indoors, typically when the elderly spend several hours in poorly heated homes. Winter may be beautiful, but it also can be hazardous. Taking precautions and using common sense help avoid dangerous situations.
