In addition, the chapter provides a turkey dinner ~ Thanksgiving food basket ~ to Wellspring of Saratoga (a Women’s Domestic Violence & Crisis services). During the Christmas holiday, the chapter participates in the Empty Stocking Project through the Saratoga County Children’s Committee by providing a gift certificate to an area girl in need. Interested women are welcome to visit a chapter meeting by calling P. Wyman at 371-1691. Meetings are held bi-monthly in members’ homes where a business meeting is conducted, a cultural program is presented and a social hour concludes the evening. For additional information on Beta Sigma Phi, go to http://www.betasigmaphi.org/ . BSP is world-wide with over 200,000 members.

• Caribou migrate longer distances than reindeer between wintering grounds and calving areas. • Reindeer have thicker, denser fur than caribou. Both have unique hair in their fur that trap air and provide extra insulation. • Both male and female reindeer and caribou grow antlers. However, female reindeer antlers grow larger than those of female caribou.

Open Tuesday-Sunday

• Reindeer calves are born at the end of April and caribou calves at the end of May. • Both animals have hooves that can be used as snowshoes for walking on the snow and for digging. • Only in North America are wild Rangifer referred to as caribou.

REINDEER AND CARIBOU ARE SIMILAR, BUT NOT THE SAME

Reindeer are symbols of the holiday season. Legend states these antlered animals have a busy evening come December 24 — helping Santa Claus pull a sleigh weighed down by toys for the world’s children. Why does Santa choose reindeer when caribou may be equally qualified for the job? It may be due to their greater history of domestication. Although the terms “reindeer” and “caribou” are frequently used interchangeably, leading many people to assume they are the same creature, recent genetic mapping published in the journal Nature Climate Change shows caribou and reindeer are actually different animals. The journal determined that these mammals are quite similar and actually share the same scientific name, Rangifer tarandus, but they are only closely related cousins. Reindeer may be slightly smaller and are generally more domesticated than caribou. Some people of the Nenet group in Russia keep reindeer for pets. The following are some other similarities and differences, courtesy of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. • Reindeer are shorter, stouter and more sedentary than the long-legged caribou.

• Reindeer have been herded for years throughout Alaska and some parts of Canada for their meat. However, caribou are largely wild animals that roam freely. As a result, caribou are hunted in the wild. Reindeer may get all the glory come the holiday season, but caribou are equally impressive animals. These large mammals provide food and other materials for survival to those who live in cold climates across the world.

Those who might be missing Like other Jewish holidays, Chanukah is shrouded in tradition. Chanukah means “dedication” or “induction” in Hebrew. The holiday begins on the 25th of Kislev and can occur in either November or December. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Chanukah includes menorah displays, traditional foods and games and songs. Chanukah rose to prominence thanks in part to the story of faith and miracle behind its inception. Antiochus IV was a Greek sovereign in control of the region of Syria, Egypt and Palestine, where many Jews resided. Antiochus began to oppress the Jews, prohibiting the practice of the Jewish religion and desecrating the Jewish Temple. Opposition to Antiochus grew, and a group led by Mattathias the Hasmonean and his son, Judah Maccabee, took on the Syrian army. They were successful in their efforts to combat religious oppression, and the Temple was subsequently rededicated. The Talmud states that, at the time of the rededication, there was very little oil left that had not been defiled by the Greeks. This posed a problem because oil was needed to burn the Temple menorah throughout the night every night. However, there was only enough left for one night’s illumination. Miraculous-

miracle.

Because Chanukah is about the miracle of the oil and the lasting flame, oil and candles factor heavily in the holiday. A nine-armed menorah called the hanukiah is lit, and one candle is lit on each of the eight nights of the celebration. The last branch of the candelabra holds the shamash (servant) candle. The organization Reform Judaism says the traditional song “Ma’oz Tzur (Rock of Ages)” is sung after the lighting of the candles each night and at other times throughout the holiday. Foods fried in oil, including latkes and jelly doughnuts, are consumed as well. Celebrants play games with a dreidel, a German-based spinning top, and giving to charity is encouraged. Chanukah is one of the few times of the year when rabbis permit games of chance. The letters atop the dreidel stand for the first letter of each word in the Hebrew statement “Neis gadol hayah sham,” which translates to “A great miracle happened there,” and refers to the defeat of the Syrian army and the rededication of the Temple.

home or planning on visiting friends and relatives who live far away during the holiday season often find the words to “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays,” are an accurate portrayal of the sentiments of holiday traveling. Composed by Robert Allen, with lyrics by Al Stillman, “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays” was published in 1954. The best-known recordings of the song are by Perry Como, who recorded it twice — once in 1954 and then again in 1959 with a different musical arrangement. The first version reached #8 on the Billboard magazine chart in the United States. The Carpenters recorded another popular version of the song for their 1984 album, “An Old-Fashioned Christmas.” Nora Jones and Cyndi Lauper also recorded a duet version of the song in 2011.

CELEBRATING MIDNIGHT MASS

Many families have their own unique holiday traditions, but one tradition that unites millions of Christians all over the world is the celebration of Midnight Mass. In many parishes, Midnight Mass is the first celebration of Christmas Mass. The origins of Midnight Mass are not exactly known. However, certain monks and nuns attended liturgical services at midnight every day in ancient times, and the Christmas Midnight Mass very well may have been adopted from these practices. Regardless of the basis behind the celebration, it can be a breathtaking and emotional service thanks to the memorable passages read and the inclusion of church choirs. Many Midnight Mass celebrants feel the Mass serves as an impressive reminder as to the true meaning of Christmas.

HELP HOLIDAY GIFTS ARRIVE ON TIME

The end of December is prime shopping and shipping time for holiday gifts. Shipping giant UPS calls this time of the year its peak season, and FedEx and the United States Postal Service also cite the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day as some of their busiest weeks. Jingling bells and Christmas carols once were the foremost sounds of the season, but now those noises have been replaced by the sounds of conveyor belts, trucks and airplanes rushing to get packages to their destinations.

According to research firm Forrester, online sales now account for 10 percent of all shopping and 15 percent of holiday shopping. USPS expects to deliver roughly 15 billion letters, cards and packages during the holiday season. While the postal service and the major pack-andship companies are incredibly reliable, shoppers can take the following steps to further ensure their gifts arrive on time.

• Shop in-store. Choose off-peak hours, such as early morning and late evening, to visit brick-and-mortar stores. The crowds will not be too large, and you will have the added peace of mind knowing that you don’t need to wait for gifts to arrive via the mail. If you like the convenience of online shopping, shop online but take advantage of in-store pick-up when available. If items are in stock, this can save you the hassle of making your way through crowded stores.

• Follow cut-off dates. Many online retailers will post “purchase by” dates to ensure specific delivery times. Be sure to familiarize yourself with these dates so your items will arrive on time. If time is ticking away, you may have to pay more for expedited shipping.

• Avoid backordered items. Popular gifts may sell out quickly, and retailers could put you on backorder lists. Research similar products as potential backups should your primary choice be on backorder. • Shop well in advance. Shopping early is the best way to ensure gifts arrive on time. Shopping early also gives shoppers time to make exchanges in the event an item is not up to par or is damaged. Thanks to the popularity and prevalence of online shopping, it has become very important for shoppers to take shipping concerns into consideration before making purchases.

SPECIALS The CDC recommends celebrants wash their hands with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds to remove germs. • Keep track of curious children. Children are enamored with the sights and sounds of the holidays and may be more curious than ever during this time of year. Things adults take for granted can be hazards to youngsters. The needles of holiday trees can cause painful cuts in the mouth and throat of a child who swallows them. Snow sprays may be harmful if the aerosol propellants are used improperly. Peanuts and popcorn used for decorating can pose potential choking hazards to young children.

KEEP THE HOLIDAY SEASON HEALTHY, SAFE AND SECURE

During the holiday season, many people do not want their thoughts to stray to anything unpleasant. Although celebrating may be the primary goal come the holiday season, individuals and families also should devote some attention to keeping the holidays safe. Just because it’s Chanukah, Christmas or New Year’s doesn’t mean safety and security should not remain a top priority. The following guidelines can help families enjoy a holiday season that is healthy, safe and secure. • Exercise caution when decorating. Decorations can be beautiful, but they also can be hazardous if not used properly. Overloading outlets is commonplace during the holiday season, but that can lead to home fires. Exercise caution around candles and other open flames. Pets may become tangled in wires or knock over glass ornaments. Keep delicate decorations away from harm. • Wash hands to prevent germs. As the cold weather arrives, people may spend greater periods of time indoors or in close proximity to other people. The holidays also are about greeting friends and relatives, and embracing or kissing. Do not ruin the festivities by spreading germs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the holiday season is also flu season.

• Be a smart host or hostess. Alcoholic beverages and holiday revelry sometimes go hand in hand. Responsible party hosts know when a guest has had too much and will arrange safe transportation home. Because kids imitate adults, many may drink the beverages they see adults drinking. Alcohol poisoning is a real risk for children, so pay attention to youngsters no matter how young they may be. • Protect the home. Deter home burglars when traveling for the holidays by having neighbors keep a watchful eye on your house. Use motion-sensor lights, keep up the appearance that someone is home by having mail collected, and do not advertise any travel plans on social media. Investment in a home security system if need be. Ensure a happier holiday season by making safety and health a priority.

(NAPSI)—For hundreds of years, the Christmas tree has been a popular symbol of the holidays. Most people celebrated with a real tree until the early 2000s, when artificial trees began to gain in popularity for their practicality. Advances in technology let designers make artificial trees that are both incredibly realistic and durable. In 2015, 81 percent of the more than 99 million households that displayed a Christmas tree used an artificial tree, according to the survey from the American Christmas Tree Association, conducted by Nielsen. Only 19 percent of American homes displaying Christmas trees last year used real trees. Artificial trees don’t need water, they don’t shed and they can last for years, saving you money over time. If you’re looking for an artificial tree this year, go online to find the widest selection and best quality for your budget, then consider these tips. • Size: Artificial trees are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit just about any home. Even lower-priced brands offer full (traditional), narrow and “pencil” trees in sizes ranging from 4 to 10 feet. Measure carefully and consider a “flatback” or corner tree if space is very tight. • Setup: Today’s artificial trees are designed for easy setup but the amount of time it takes to go from box to beautiful can vary. Check out the www.TreeClassics.com Snap Tree if you want more holiday fun in less time. Available in several branch styles and sizes, this tree is stored on its rolling stand and sets up in a snap, without heavy lifting of multiple sections. • Lights: Untangling and stringing lights can be difficult, which is why the most popular artificial trees are pre-lit. “Look for 100 lights per foot,” suggests Thomas Harman, CEO of www. BalsamHill.com, retailer of what have been called the most realistic artificial trees on the market. “A 7½ foot tree, the standard for most homes, should have at least 750 lights on it.” Balsam Hill’s unique trunk design comes Fresh Cut & Standing with premade light connections-just stack the sections 266 County Road 76 • Stillwater together and plug into a wall 698-6470 socket.

• Realism: Artificial Christmas trees molded from polyethylene, or PE, have what many say are the best quality, color and shape. Look for branches with a mix of brown and different shades 11 of green in the branches. “Our designers carefully craft our trees to mimic nature using cuttings from live trees as their guides. So our Balsam Fir looks just like a real balsam fir in color and needle shape,” says Harman. For a truly different look, visit www.Treetopia.com to find tinsel trees in a rainbow of fun colors.

• Warranty: A good artificial tree should last at least 10 years. Look for a warranty of no less than five years on the tree and no less than three years on the lights. Proper storage will also extend the life of the tree. Most manufacturers will provide a storage bag for the tree and recommend storing the tree in its shipping box to prevent crushing.

SIMPLE WAYS TO DRESS UP YOUR HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The holiday season is rife with traditions that focus on fun and family. One such testament to the festive spirit of the holiday season is the many homes and businesses decorated with the lights and colors that have become synonymous with the season.

Decorating for the holiday season can be time-consuming. While decking the halls may not consume as much time as holiday shopping and wrapping presents, according to data from a 2013 American Time Use Survey, interior and exterior decorating for the holidays may consume anywhere from 2.5 to 3 hours per session. Holiday decorating includes things as simple as setting up a

menorah or as complex as stringing lights on the exterior of a home. Though elaborate displays can take hours to erect, time-crunched holiday celebrants can still create festive, welcoming displays.

• Hang holiday wreaths. Holiday enthusiasts without much time to decorate can invest in a couple of holiday wreaths, which can be dressed up as much or as little as celebrants prefer. If you do not have the time to string lights on the house, wrap them around wreaths hung in windows or hang the wreaths on a home’s main entrance. Celebrants who want to go a less traditional route can hang wreaths made of holly, citrus fruits, ribbons, or any other greenery instead of the more customary evergreen wreaths.

• Decorate with ornaments. Ornaments are not exclusive to Christmas trees. Fill a vase or bowl with metallic ornaments and place it in a prominent location, such as a busy hallway or the foyer of your home. Hang ornaments on clear filament from the mantle or within the main window of the house, where they can reflect tree lights and add sparkle. • Bring in more greenery. Drape evergreen boughs on staircase handrailings or on the mantle, or use greenery to frame doorways. The scent will be inviting and things instantly will look more festive. • Use throws and decorative pillows. Change the look of a room with holiday-colored decor if you do not want to clutter the space with knickknacks. A red and green blanket draped over the sofa can give off a comforting holiday vibe. • Focus on the front door and entryway. Celebrants who do not have the time to decorate their entire homes can create a warm, inviting space by decorating their front doors and entryways. Place greenery, bows, tinsel, lights, and winterinspired accessories by the front door so friends and family visiting for the season catch the holiday spirit the moment they walk through the door. • Place LED candles in windows. Rather than contending with twinkle lights and electric cords, homeowners can employ battery-operated faux candles to create a homey appeal in windows and hallways throughout their homes.

Millions of people change careers every year. Whereas professionals may have once worked for the same company for the majority, if not the entirety, of their careers, nowadays it’s not uncommon for men and women to change jobs several times before reaching retirement. Changing jobs and changing careers are not necessarily the same thing. Professionals mulling a career change will have to consider a host of factors that men and women looking to change jobs may never have to contemplate. Such factors may include returning to school and lifestyle changes designed to make living on less income more feasible.

Professionals changing careers may also need to develop a strategy for handling job interviews. When changing jobs as opposed to careers, professionals can draw attention to their résumés, essentially letting their experience speak for itself. But while experience is often a feather in a job candidate’s cap, professionals changing careers may need to focus more on their futures than their pasts when interviewing for a new career. • Draw attention to those skills that will apply to your new career. All of your experience and skills likely won’t transfer to your new career, but that does not mean you’re going in with an empty briefcase. Make a list of your most transferable skills, and develop an interview strategy that highlights those skills and explains how they can be applied in both the near future and over the course of your new career. • Use your contacts to your advantage. Even if much of your experience won’t transfer to your new career, your professional network might still be valuable to a prospective employer. The longer you have been working the larger your professional network likely is, so highlight those contacts in your interview and illustrate how you can put them to good use should you be hired. • Showcase how you have adapted in the past. Much of the business world moves at a breakneck pace. That pace has become even faster thanks to advancements in technology that routinely affect how businesses operate. Even if you have never before changed careers, that does not mean you have not adapted to change. Make a list of the changes your employers have instituted throughout your career, highlighting how you adapted to those changes and benefitted from them in their aftermath. • Remain positive throughout the interview. Even if you are changing careers because you’re unhappy and/or unfulfilled

in your present line of work, avoid badmouthing that industry and your past employers. Doing so will only reflect negatively on you and raise a red flag with prospective employers. Instead, explain your reasons for pursuing a new career path in terms that excite potential employers about your candidate. The decision to change careers can induce both excitement and anxiety. ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY

Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion.

Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem.

Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute, roughly 10 percent of all highway deaths involve large trucks. Braking capability can play a role in such deaths, as the IIHS notes that loaded tractor-trailers take between 20 and 40 percent farther than cars to fully stop. That discrepancy is even greater on poorly maintained roads or roads marked by adverse conditions such as ice, rain and/or snow. While 16 percent of the roughly 3,600 people who died in large truck crashes in the United States in 2014 were truck occupants, more than four times that many people (68 percent) were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles.
