Arthur

as you can see is a beautiful orange, neuter, long haired kitty. He was outside begging to come in from the cold into this house in Stony Creek. They would not allow him in the house, nor did they feed him as we were told that he could find food in the field. We had to plead with them to get him to safety and bring him to us. He is one cool cat and he too deserves the very best.

time to the cause. With the need for volunteers so crucial, it is not hard to find a place to help out, especially during the holiday season. If you are pumped to give back this season and have some time to spare, here are some tips for finding the right volunteer opportunity for you.

What? Before you do anything, think about the causes you would most like to support. There are a lot of organizations that support a lot of causes. What causes are near and dear to your heart? Raising funds for AIDS research? Visiting with seniors? Making care packages for soldiers? Caring for animals? Boxing up food for the hungry? How? Along with causes, think about the services you have to offer. What are your skills, interests and talents? How can you help? Some volunteer work is very basic and requires very little in the way of skills, sorting and boxing supplies, for example. Some requires a specific set of skills, like first aid. Know how you can help before you start looking for volunteer opportunities. When? Consider the time you have to offer as well. Some volunteer work is long term. Some is short term. How much time can you devote to volunteer work? When would you be available? Where? Think about where you would like to serve. Some organizations are rather large. Some are faith based. Some serve particular populations. Again, what causes would you like to support? Where could you best support those causes that meets your needs and values as well?

Mark Your Calendars for our Upcoming Events! q Nov. 29 - 9am-6pm Black Friday ... Check

for our upcoming deep discounts!

q Dec. 3 & Dec. 5 - 7-9pm After Hours Open House ... Enjoy snacks and great specials including the opportunity to order from our entire Melissa and Doug Catalog

When you have a good idea of what you have to offer, you can start looking around. The holiday season is a popular time to give back to the community, and there should be plenty of volunteer opportunities available. Ask around. Check the newspaper ads. Conduct a search online. Opportunities will vary, but here are some businesses that are

often in need of volunteers: • Animal shelters • Churches • Hospitals and clinics • Libraries • Museums • Music programs • Non-profits • Nursing homes • Parks • Schools • Theaters • Zoos and nature centers

When you find some volunteer opportunities of interest, call and get all of the details. Make sure you meet the criteria and can fulfill the obligations. If you have a bad back, for example, you may not be able to handle donations. Don’t sign up for a position you cannot fulfill or are uncomfortable doing.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and make a difference in the lives of others. If you have the chance to do so this holiday season, go for it!

1. Exercise caution at ATMs. Thousands of dollars change hands at stores and banks this time of year. Potential thieves know that ATMs make good places to target victims withdrawing funds for purchases. Shoppers should choose ATMs that are well lit and withdraw money only when banks are open. If that’s not possible, avoid using ATMs in remote locations or dark alcoves. Keep your eyes fixed on your surroundings and be aware of the people in your vicinity. Promptly pocket your money and do not openly display your cash. 2. Keep purchases out of view. When shopping, keep your purchases hidden from prospective thieves. Make frequent trips to your car when shopping and store merchandise in the trunk of your car or in a cargo area with a cover drawn. Once items have been brought home, keep them well out of sight, stored in closets or away from windows. 3. Only park in well-lit lots. Finding a parking space at a busy mall can be difficult, but be picky when choosing spots. Try to park in a well-lit area in a busy location and be aware of the surrounding vehicles. If you feel uncomfortable going back to your car, ask a security guard to escort you. 4. Shop in groups. Go to the store with a group of friends. There is safety in numbers and having more eyes to look out is to your advantage. Thieves are less likely to approach a group of people than a solitary person. 5. Carry minimal items. Always keep your hands free to ward off any people in the event of an attack. Bags and packages weighing you down make you an easy target.

6 Steps For Holiday Shopping Safety The holiday season is a joyous and busy time of year. Decking the halls, catching up with old friends and holiday shopping make this time of year especially hectic. Though the season is generally jolly, there are those people who take advantage of the hectic nature of the holiday season, preying on busy holiday shoppers who may be understandably distracted as the season progresses. As a result, shoppers and holiday revelers should heed the following precautions to ensure this holiday season is as safe as it is festive.

An Overnight Package For Two Which Includes...

I came to the shelter with three house mates and our story is a sad one. Our family was evicted and they abandoned us. The landlord took us all in for a while, but just couldn’t manage so many animals any more. I really need to lose some weight, so when I’m adopted, you should work with your vet to establish a proper diet for me. I may be big, but I’m still young. If you give me lots of toys and we play together that will help me lose some of my portliness.

Holly And Mistletoe Are Symbols Of Christmas “Oh, by gosh, by golly it’s time for mistletoe and holly. Tasty pheasants, Christmas presents, countrysides covered in snow.” As exemplified by this holiday hit by Henry Sanicola, Frank Sinatra and Dok Stanford, holly and mistletoe are an integral part of holiday imagery and tradition. Holly is used to adorn a home in green and red finery alongside evergreen boughs and wreaths. In addition, it has become customary to hang a bouquet of mistletoe under which people are encouraged to share a holiday kiss. While these elements of celebrations are now incorporated into many of the secular and religious components of Christmas, they have very different origins. Holly Holly has been used since the days of the early Pagans as a decoration for midwinter festivities, when it was brought into homes to keep evil spirits away. The ancient Romans also believed that holly prickles drove away evil spirits, and it held a place of honor at December festivals dedicated to the god Saturn. To avoid persecution during the Roman pagan Saturnalia festival, early Christians would participate in the tradition of hanging evil-repelling holly on their homes to appear like the masses. Eventually as the number of Christians grew, the tradition became less of a pagan one and more associated with Christians and Christmas. Some people have inferred that holly and its prickly edges is symbolic of the crown of thorns Jesus wore at his crucifixion, with the red berries representing blood. Mistletoe Mistletoe was once held sacred by the Norse, Celtic Druids and North American Indians. It is actually a parasitic plant that grows on a wide range of host trees. Heavy infestation can dwarf the growth and kill these trees. In cultures across pre-Christian

Europe, mistletoe was seen as a representation of divine male essence (and thus romance, fertility and vitality). The plant also was thought to be a symbol of peace, and anyone standing below it should receive tokens of affection. When enemies met beneath mistletoe, they had to lay down their weapons and observe a truce until the next day. This is how the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe likely began, and why a ball of mistletoe is now hung in homes during Christmas, a season of peace and affection.

Homeowners who hang mistletoe and holly around their homes during Whether faux or fresh mistletoe, a bouquet of this the holiday seaplant symbolizes peace and tranquility for Christson should be mas. mindful of pets and youngsters around the plants. Mistletoe and holly are considered to be moderately to severely toxic, and ingesting the leaves could be dangerous. Therefore, keep these plants away from curious hands. Mistletoe is commonly hung up high, which should make it less problematic, but holly should be hung high as well.

Now largely associated with Christmas celebrations, holly and mistletoe were once part of pagan rituals and ancient superstitions.

(StatePoint) From gas, parking permits and insurance premiums, to maintenance and repairs, owning a car can be an expensive prospect. But motorists can pave the way to lower costs by following a few clever rules of the road: Reduce Your Rate Shop around for auto insurance, as prices can vary widely between companies. For a cheaper rate, avoid purchasing a sporty or expensive vehicle. Insurance companies are more likely to give low rates to drivers of reliable cars that have safety features.

Inquire into any discounts associated with a clean driving record. And if you don’t log too many miles per week, you may also be eligible for a low-mileage discount.

The next time your vehicle needs a part replaced after a fender bender, opt for alternative collision repair parts, which are anywhere from 26 to 50 percent less expensive than parts issued by car companies. Such parts also often have warranties that exceed those offered by the car companies.

2012 FORD S SEL FOCUS

On average, competition in the collision parts industry saves consumers approximately $1.5 billion a year. Car companies, however, are trying to prevent drivers from utilizing these less expensive parts by enforcing design patents on things like bumpers, hoods and mirrors, say experts.

Fuel Up Efficiently Regular maintenance to your vehicle will help it run more smoothly and efficiently. So take care of your car. Pay attention to your route. With the right apps, you can make

bumper-to-bumper traffic a thing of the past. Sophisticated GPS-based technologies can steer you clear of the road blocks and jam-ups that leave you idling and wasting fuel. For short trips, consider using your own two feet. It’s great exercise and will save you a few pennies in the process. Make trips to the gas station worth your while by filling the tank completely. After all, you are using gas every time you idle waiting for a pump. For most people, owning a car is not a luxury, but a necessity. While some expenses associated with driving are unavoidable, there are steps you can take to make it a more affordable mode of transportation.

Oil Changes and Filters

Smoother Driving

To protect your engine, follow your manufacturer’s recommended oil change intervals. Instead of conventional oil, consider using high performance synthetic motor oil designed to reduce wear, heat and fuel consumption.

The way you drive can affect your vehicle’s performance and longevity. Take care to accelerate and decelerate smoothly. Not only will you increase your fuel economy, but you’ll extend the life of your brake pads.

Just like motor oil, not all oil filters are of the same quality -filters can be classified as “economy,” “better,” and “best. Since the oil filter prevents contaminants from circulating through the system and causing damage, opting for a premium oil filter will extend the life of your vehicle.

Avoid feel-good driving maneuvers like revving the engine and try not to drive on a nearly empty gas tank. Neither of these behaviors is good for your engine, and could result in costly repairs.

For example, Royal Purple oil filters use micro-glass filter technology. Advanced micro-glass oil filters are designed to extend
