you have chimney doors, keep them shut. If they are open or in bad shape, they could leak, leading to drafts. A new product on the market is a chimney balloon, which can be inserted easily. Like any balloon, it will inflate to fill the available space, reducing the amount of draft, serving almost as a portable damper. Of course, when you plan to use your chimney, you’ll have to take the balloon down and store it properly.

One way to get piece of mind with your chimney is to have a professional chimney sweep come out to take a look. They can provide you with a detailed list of the work that needs to be done. The Chimney Safety Institute of America does certify chimney sweeps, and it’s worth checking the credentials of your professionals. Online review sites also offer the opportunity to see how your professional has interacted with others in the past. Fall is the busy time for sweeps, so the earlier you can get on their schedule, the better off you’ll be.

Every few years, you will want to have the buildup removed from your chimney by a professional sweep. Soot, debris and creosote can build up in the chimney, preventing good airflow and creating a fire hazard. Creosote is a particularly dangerous substance because it is highly combustible, and thousands of fires happen each year because of poorly maintained chimneys. Chimneys in older homes can be particularly dangerous if they are not maintained properly. Finally, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got fuel for your fireplace. Look for wood that has been seasoned or cured for at least a single season. Hard woods like elm, maple and oak will burn longer and hotter than soft woods like pine, birch and spruce. Store your firewood off the ground and stack it properly to allow air to circulate and reduce rot and mold.

Fireplaces are a huge selling point for many homes, and keeping them in good working order can help add to the resale value of your home. There are several things you can do yourself to maintain your fireplace if you’re comfortable working on the chimney. First, you should inspect the chimney cap. Make sure there is one

or a screen in place and it is in good working order. A cap or screen will prevent rodents and birds from making your home into their home as the weather turns colder. Your chimney is a conduit to the outside, and, as such, it could be the source of substantial heat loss. Inspect your damper or louver. If you are missing one or it is in bad repair, it will serve as an open window, drawing in cold air from the outside and allowing the air you have paid to heat to escape out the chimney. If

Winterizing Your Pipes By Sam Erickson Not everyone has to worry about pipes freezing in the winter, but much of America does. If the temperature in your area routinely drops to 20 degrees or below, it will be worth your time and energy to prepare and maintain your home to prevent your pipes from bursting. Pipes burst when an ice blockage forms and the pressure builds up behind it. While you won’t have ice shooting into your home, you’ll have all of the water that has built up behind it—in the basement, in the crawlspace or through the walls of your house. Proper insulation is the first step to preventative maintenance. The unheated areas of your house are the most important to insulate. Attics, basements and crawlspaces are the general culprits. Polyethylene or fiberglass tubes are available to keep the cold out of pipes. You’ll want to measure the diameter of the pipes and purchase the correct size. This will ensure you have to make only one trip to your home supply store. Pipe insulation is carried in most big box stores and in all hardware and home supply stores. It can be cheaper in the spring months—prices tend to go up as the temperatures drop and demand goes up. You will want to be particularly aware of any pipes that have been stressed by previous freezing or have recently been installed. If you experience significant periods of severe winter weather, you might consider wrapping pipes in heat tape before insulating them. The instructions for installation are very specific, and it is essential to follow them. If you don’t, the heat tape can lead to fires. Heat tape also has to be checked regularly to ensure it is still functioning effectively. Once you’ve taken all of the prerequisite steps, you’ll still have some maintenance to do to ensure you don’t wake up in a puddle. When the temperature is expected to drop, turn on your faucets, particularly those that flow along outside walls and are the most exposed to the cold. This will reduce the pressure and can prevent an explosion in the pipes, even if an ice dam does form. Opening cabinets that contain pipes will let the warm air from the rest of your house flow onto the pipes, keeping them warmer. You can take one more step and check the basement and garage for any leaks. Look particularly for places where cold air could be directly applied to pipes from cracked windows, gaps or ar-

eas where the insulation has worn away. Applying your general

* Keep the tree away from heat sources. Though it might seem more idyllic to place your Christmas tree next to the fireplace, it’s a lot more dangerous as well. When choosing a spot for your tree, find a place that is away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators and vents. But homeowners also should know that even trees placed away from heat sources can still dry out, creating a fire hazard even if the tree was fresh and healthy when purchased. That’s because Christmas trees can quickly dry out in heated rooms. Monitor the tree’s water levels every day, checking those levels in both the morning and at night before going to bed. This prevents the tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard, and it also helps the tree maintain its aesthetic appeal through the holiday season.

Decking the halls for the holidays is a beloved tradition for many families. A home’s exterior festooned with lights help create a festive holiday mood, while stockings hung by the chimney and a Christmas tree in the living room bring that holiday cheer inside. Though the holiday season is a festive time of year, it can quickly turn tragic if revelers do not emphasize safety when decorating their homes. When decorating this holiday season, be sure to employ the following precautions so your holiday season is festive, decorative and safe. * Exercise extreme caution with holiday lights. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation In-

* Limit use of candles. Like Christmas trees, candles are a popular yet potentially hazardous decorative item during the holiday season. When decorating with candles, be sure that all candles are extinguished before leaving a room and never leave them burning when you go to bed. Candles should be kept away from any decorative items, including Christmas trees, that can catch fire. Never place candles near curtains, furniture or presents. Holiday enthusiasts with little children or pets at home might want to decorate with fake LED-light candles instead of traditional candles. Curious kids or excitable pets may not recognize the potential dangers of lit candles and, as a result, might burn themselves or tips candles over. The holiday season is upon us, and that means scores of celebrants will be decking their halls. Though festive decorations are a part of the season, safety should always come first.

* Purchase the right Christmas tree. The Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that Christmas trees are involved in hundreds of fires causing an average of 15 deaths each year. In addition, such fires cause an average of $13 million in property damage annually. Though it can be tempting to purchase the most eye-catching Christmas tree you find, avoid acting rashly until you have learned a little about the tree. Artificial trees should be labeled as “Fire Resistant.” Such trees can still catch fire, but they are more resistant to fire than trees without such labels. When buying a live tree, make sure the tree is fresh. The tree should be green, and its needles should be difficult to pull off of branches, which should not be easily breakable. Tap the tree on the ground before purchasing it. If the tree loses a lot of needles upon tapping the ground, it isn’t fresh. Trees that aren’t fresh are more susceptible to going up in flames.

When the time changes, it’s time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors. Making sure they are still operational is quick and easy and will bring peace of mind for another six months. Similarly, every year, you should check your fire extinguishers to ensure that they have the proper pressure. Look for dents and dings, and make sure the pin is in the correct position. Fall is a great time to do this, as you’ll be spending more time indoors. If the pressure has fallen too low, find a professional to recharge them for you. Most people don’t use their chimney in the summer, and soot can build up over the course of a year. Other debris like birds’ nests or even leaves can create unsafe blockages. Have your chimney inspected by a professional if you plan to use it through the winter. Small animals will be looking for a warm place to sleep, and your home is a great option for them. Perform routine pest control in your area, watching out for places where animals might get into your home. Most importantly, you’ll want to have your furnace and heating system checked by a professional. This can save you big money on your heating bill, and an inspection can ensure that there isn’t a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide in your home. Furnace and air filters should be changed regularly to maximize safety and efficiency. If you are planning on using space heaters, humidifiers or de-humidifiers, they are a great addition to your checklist. Clean them off and inspect the heating and electrical elements for safety, particularly if they have been out of sight in storage for the warmer months. Finally, check the caulking around your home. Caulk is a cheap compound that anyone can apply, and it will reduce the amount of energy loss from your home and prevent water damage to flooring, walls and windows in the kitchen and bathroom.

Did You Know? Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms from the natural decay of uranium found in many soils. Colorless and odorless, radon can significantly increase a person’s risk of lung cancer. Smokers who live in homes with high radon levels are especially susceptible to lung cancer. Radon can enter a home by moving up through the soil beneath a home and finding its way through cracks and holes in the foundation. Many people may feel homes with basements are especially susceptible to radon, but radon can enter a home whether the home has a basement or not. Granite countertops may emit radon, but not always at levels that cause cancer. Countertops can be tested for radon emissions, and such testing is inexpensive and quick.

Electrical Safety Tips For Holiday Decorating (MS) -- Everyone has at least one -- the house on the street that lights up in splendor around the holiday season. Decorations are in abundance both indoors and out, and just seeing the house brings on a smile. But as beautiful as it might be, that home may also be a safety risk if the decorator hasn’t followed precautions like these offered by CSA Group: Creativity is key but not at the cost of safety -- Let your inner designer shine, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when arranging electrical items, such as lights and electronic decorations. Be sure to turn off the electricity to the supply outlet before working with outdoor

Get Out The Blanket For Your House By Sam Erickson

With colder temperatures coming, you might be thinking about making some additions that will help your home and your pocketbook get through the winter unscathed. Many people automatically think of drafty places in the home like doorsills or older windows. It’s a great idea to pay attention to these, but insulation actually has a much greater effect. Rather than a quick draft, poor insulation is ,like a slow sieve, leaking energy at every surface of your home. Fall is the perfect time to install more insulation in your home.

The first step is to find out how much insulation you actually have. Crawl up in to your atatic and look at the depth of the insulation there. That can ofdfer you a clue about the quality of the rest of the insulation rin your home. There are also numerous organizations that ewill come out and do a home energy audit for you. Having an energy audit is a good idea for a number of reasons, hincluding the fact that it will reveal the quality of insulation in hard-to-check places like inside your walls.

These days, you’ve got several options for home insulation. Most people think of giant rolls of pink, and these rolls or batts are still readily available. Made of fiberglass or rock wool, they are easy to install and relatively cheap. They are also cut to standard widths to fit between wall studs or floor joists in the ceiling. You might also look into professional installation of loose-fill, rigid foam or foam-in-place insulation. Loose-fill insulation can be blown into place, making it useful for odd-shaped places like roofs or ducting where it can be difficult to install other kinds of insulation. Rigid foam can be applied to exterior walls and has a higher R-rating based on thickness. Each type of insulation is given an R-rating, essentially a measure of how much resistance to heat flow the product has. As you do your research, you’ll quickly learn the R-values of different types of insulation. Remember that these are based on depth as well, and the resistance to heat will change based on how much material you put into your house.

Each region of the country has different recommendations for the amount of insulation you should have, so check with your contractor before proceeding to maximize your investment. Insulation is one of the most effective ways you can reduce your energy expenditures, offering a much faster return on your investment than other options. In addition to keeping your home warm in the winter, insulation can keep the heat out in the summer, doubling your investment. Once you’ve completed your renovation, you can cozy up for the winter under the new blanket for your house.

just a year earlier, when only three of the 35 projects saw an increase in cost-recouped percentage. Replacement projects proved especially beneficial for homeowners, who likely also benefitted from a real estate market that finally started to stabilize after an extended period of economic uncertainty that heavily influenced both buyers and sellers. While an economy on the rebound no doubt benefitted homeowners looking to recoup as much of their home improvement investment at resale as possible, other factors likely contributed as well. For example, homeowners surveyed for the 2013 report who added a backup power generator recouped more of their investment than in previous years. That’s likely because heavily publicized storms, such as Superstorm Sandy in late 2012, have forced homeowners and prospective homeowners to place a greater emphasis on being prepared for such storms. Among the upscale projects surveyed, none recouped more of a homeowner’s investment than replacing existing siding with fiber-cement siding. Homeowners who financed such a project recouped 79.3 percent of the project’s cost, placing it just ahead of a garage door replacement, which recouped an average of 75.2 percent of its cost. After years of many home improvement projects recouping little of their initial costs at resale, the tide finally seems to be turning for homeowners. Green Ways To Embrace Shorter, Colder Days The arrival of autumn ushers in cooler days and less hours of sunshine. As much of the country turns its clocks back an hour, night descends that much earlier, prompting a greater reliance on artificial light and electricity. When the time comes to turn clocks back, eco-conscious men and women can employ various strategies to conserve energy. * Change light bulbs. Traditional incandescent bulbs are not the most energy efficient option available. The United States Department of Energy says incandescent bulbs use a lot of energy to produce light, but a significant amount of energy to produce heat as well. Ninety percent of the energy used by incandescent bulbs is given off as heat, so it is more economical and efficient to use a bulb that cuts down on heat production. Compact fluorescent lamps, or CFLs, qualified by ENERGY STAR use about one-fourth the energy and last ten times longer than a comparable incandescent bulb that puts out the same amount of light. Light-emitting diode, or LED, bulbs are a much more energy-efficient option, and LEDs last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs. * Turn lights off when rooms aren’t being used. It can be tempting to turn on all of the lights on in a home when darkness arrives. But this wastes both energy and money. Turn lights off when you exit rooms. Try to gather the family in a centralized location that is full of ambient and task lighting in an attempt to concentrate lighting usage rather than spreading it out all over the house. * Rely on timers or automated systems. Standard timers or more complex app-synced house management systems enable homeowners to turn their lights or even appliances on and off at key times. Those with a smartphone or tablet can log in and manage their homes from a remote location, turning lights on or off or adjusting their thermostats at their convenience. * Turn down the temperature. The California Energy Commission says for every degree a person

lowers the heat in the 60- to 70-degree range, he or she will save up to 5 percent on heating costs. Set the thermostat low at night when residents are under warm blankets and quilts, and lower the thermostat when the house is empty. Furthermore, homeowners can turn down the thermostat on hot water heaters and even dishwashers, which can help save as much as 11 percent on water heating costs. * Look to alternative heat and

lighting sources. A warm, inviting fire can light up a room and also provide supplementary heat. Pellet stoves, or those that burn a highly concentrated fuel source that is energy efficient and environmentally friendly, may prove a worthwhile investment. Many heating stoves continue to give off ambient heat long after their flames have been extinguished. And centrally located stoves can heat most of a home at a fraction of the cost of traditional forced-air systems.

* Put south- and west-facing windows to use. Place solarpowered devices next to an open window during daylight hours to charge when the sun is at its brightest. Use solarpowered lamps, radios and even phone charges once the sun sets. Windows that get a lot of warm sunlight can be draped in dull, black curtains to incubate rooms that need warming. The black fabric will absorb the sun’s heat, naturally heating a room.

* Trim shrubs and trees. Make the most of sunlight when it’s available by allowing the sun’s rays to reach the interior of the home. Prune dormant trees and shrubs so that the home will get plenty of sunlight. * Spend time outdoors. Make the most of daylight hours by

side or do homework at the patio table, reducing reliance on indoor lighting. Sunlight can make ideal task lighting for arts and crafts projects as well.

There are many ways to conserve energy and become less reliant on artificial light as daylight hours gradually dwindle.

Two Towns – One Book: Announces the Book of the Year! CLIFTON PARK - Two Towns - One Book: Clifton Park & Halfmoon Read! announced the book of the year. The contenders for our third community read have been revealed, scrutinized and discussed. The votes have been tabulated. Our choice is one of our non-fiction selections: The Bucolic Plague: How Two Manhattanites Became Gentlemen Farmers by Josh Kilmer-Purcell. This deliciously funny book describes what happens when two New Yorkers do the unthinkable: start over, raise a herd of kids, and get a little dirty. You’re sure to love this riotous and moving true tale of goats, mud, and a centuries-old mansion in rustic upstate New York. The winning title was decided by public vote ending October 27. The other contenders were: The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball; The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson, The Round House by Louise Erdrich; and The Whistling Season by Ivan Doig. I would also really love it if you had a lot of time to spend with me, I get pretty anxious when I am left alone. If you think I’d be a good fit in your home, ask to meet me at the front desk! I’ll give you my best toothless grin in return!

Wonder Woman Terrier, Pit Bull Mix, 2 Year Old Female, Grey/White

Well, hello there! The staff here call me *Wonder Woman* ...As in I give wonderful kisses, walk wonderfully on a leash and have such wonderful manners! They named me after a superhero because I’m a girl of super size, but don’t let that fool you-I can leap up into your arms in a single bound! I was rescued from the streets of Albany where I was lost. Now that I have my super powers and my super name, it’s my turn to do the rescuing by adopting a new forever family!

Anderson

Domestic Short Hair Mix, 1-1/2 Year Old Male, Black/White

Hey there, I’m Anderson, a black and white puss with fine green eyes. I have a friendly purrsonality and I enjoy being petted. You’ll have to forgive my coat looking a bit worse for wear, since I was a stray for a while. I got hungry and lost weight. Trying to catch your own supper is not as easy as it sounds. As you can imagine, I like to stay close to my kibbles. I so look forward to settling down with a nice family where I will have time to attend to my grooming. Then I will soon look like my usual handsome self.

Gilbert

Domestic Short Hair Mix, 1 Year Old Male, Orange/White

Hi there, I’m Gilbert and I am a real charmer. First let me tell you about my awesome feet - there are extra toes on every paw. My coat is orange and I have white feet and bib. My fur is nice and thick and I sure love to have it petted. I have a large cobby head, so handsome. I am very affectionate and you can pick me up for a cuddle any time. Not long ago I was living the stray life, and being on the streets for quite a while was really tough. I was pretty run down when I came to the shelter, but I’m much better now. Healthy food and love to share will soon have me back in tip top form. I am a wonderful mellow boy. Come and let me work my magic on you!

Understanding tires and what makes some a better fit than others for certain vehicles can make for safe driving and improved handling.

People who live in snowy, icy conditions will benefit from the use of snow tires. These tires are designed with special treads to offer more traction in slippery conditions. The rubber used to manufacture the tire can remain flexible even at extremely low temperatures. Winter tires are best reserved for extreme weather and not used all season long because they will wear out more quickly than others. They may not have the same level of traction on clear roads. In some cases, winter tires may have metal studs included to enhance traction in icy situations. People who do not want to switch tires when cold weather arrives sometimes invest in snow chains that improve traction on standard tires.

All-season tires

Mud Tires

The most common type of tire and arguably the best known is the standard all-season tire. Many vehicles come equipped with these tires, which are designed to be versatile enough to grip the road in various conditions. They are commonly made of a harder rubber that will not wear out quickly and will retain their tread. Most day-to-day driving can be done on all-season tires.

Muddy areas can be just as slippery as snowy conditions. Mud tires are designed similarly to snow tires but will have extra grooves and a tread pattern that facilitates movement of mud away from the tires and road. Mud tires may be wider than standard tires as well.

High-performance tires

Drivers of trucks or sport-utility vehicles often need special truck tires. These tires can better handle the weight and size of a larger vehicle. Many drivers stick with the type of tire that originally came with their truck. Drivers who like to go off-roading may need an all-terrain tire to offer more traction when climbing hills or traversing different conditions.

Different Types Of Tires Make A Difference Drivers rarely think of the tires on their vehicles until they have a flat. But the type of tires on your vehicle can impact its performance. When choosing tires for their vehicles, drivers should consider a host of factors, including the terrain and driving conditions vehicles are likely to encounter.

People who live in dry climates or drive sports and racing cars can benefit from high-performance tires. These tires are specifically designed to grip the road better and offer superior handling under higher speeds. Because high-performance tires are made of a softer rubber compared to standard tires, they will not last as long as all-season tires. Snow tires

Truck Tires

It can be easy to overlook the importance of tires, but tires help vehicles remain on the road and can affect mileage, maneuverability and safety.

Attention Businesses: Your Chamber Has A (Health Insurance) Plan! The news channels are full of scary stories about how the Affordable Care Act (a/k/a Obamacare) may or may not affect your business’ bottom line or your family’s health care coverage. The situation has been changing rapidly, and with the enrollment period now underway many people don’t know where to turn. Exchanges allow a person to shop for coverage, but health insurance is complex and you need someone to cut through the misinformation, technological barriers Pete Bardunias, and carrier lingo to make sure you understand what President/CEO, the Chamber you have. If you are a small business owner you can of Southern Saratoga County rest assured that help is available by contacting the business organization(s) that serve your location. For example, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County and Bouchey & Clarke Benefits, Inc. have partnered to offer a variety of programs for business owners and sole entrepreneurs, with face to face, personal service and friendly advice. The Bright Choices program pioneered by the Chamber of Southern Saratoga has essentially been an exchange for almost four years. I inherited this innovative tradition upon taking over as President/CEO in 2011, and we continue to help drive major changes with the carriers to provide better choice and plan selections for local businesses. The Chamber also has plans available for even the smallest of employers for ancillary benefit products like Dental, Vision, Disability and Life Insurance, and a free NY Rx Card to help reduce prescription costs. In a still-challenging economy, employers need to focus on their business, not on benefit packages, and the Chamber’s competent staff, including a licensed, Certified Application Counselor, offers peace of mind. We understand your needs and can help you communicate the relevant information to employees. Our open enrollment date is November 12 from 8:30AM-1:00PM at the chamber office in Clifton Park. For more information, contact Sabrina Heilmann at (518) 371-7748 or email sabrina@southernsaratoga.org .
