Community Events Board more inside… Groovin’ at the Library MECHANICVILLE - The 2013 Summer Reading Program at the Mechanicville District Public Library is in full swing! This year’s NY State theme is “Dig into Reading.” Laura McIntosh is ready for Groovin’ in the Garden on July 31st @ 6:30pm. Her wonderfully offbeat interpretations of some reliable classics—a tuba-fueled take on “Shoo-Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy,” a boogie-in-your-socks romp through “The Hokey Pokey”— bring a bushel full of Laurie’s patently catchy and witty originals. Several of these focus on a theme that brings folks of all walks together and helps everybody: community gardens. Supported in part by funds from the New York State Library’s Family Literacy Library Services grant program. Visit http://meclib.sals.edu/ for more information.

Manage Your Music Downloads CLIFTON PARK - Come to the Clifton Park- Halfmoon Public Library on Monday, July 29 from 6-8pm for the program Manage Your Music Downloads. Do you have an iPod, iPad, or maybe an iPhone? Do you want to learn how to get the most out of iTunes?  Join us for this class as we learn how to bring music and other digital media into iTunes.  Learn how to manage your digital media. We will also explore Freegal, the downloadable media that offers free music to Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library patrons. Registration is requested for this program and can be made online, in person or by phoning the Library at 371-8622.

The event is going to cost $25 for pre-registered runners and $30 for those that register the day of the event. The neat thing about the GLOW Back to School Run is that for every school supply item that runners donate the day of the race they will be given a glow necklace or bracelet to wear during the race. The school supply items will then be donated to Stillwater Central School District for any student in need. The race will begin as it is dusk and runners will finish in the dark. Race shirts are going to have glow in the dark ink on them as well! The race will mostly be through residential neighborhoods and on the sidewalk. Look for signups at the end of the month. A Night Out with Strata and I am I can! CAPITAL DISTRICT - Looking for a casual, fun, mid-week evening out? Join I am I can at Strata restaurant for dinner on Tuesday, August 13th. I am I can selectively partners mentors and high school girls who enrich each other’s lives. One of our students says, “I have often heard that knowledge is power. Until recently, I did not know what that meant.  Knowledge gives you the power to lend a hand to those in need, not only financially, but through support and guidance.  I have a mentor who has helped me tremendously with achieving my aspirations and preparing me for the future.  I plan to one day follow in the footsteps of my mentor and help other young women.  It is my belief that success is of no importance unless you use it towards the benefit of others.” You can learn more about I am I can on our website at www.iamicanachieve.org or by contacting our founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010  ext 102. CLIFTON PARK - The Friends of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Library will sponsor a free preview of the exhibit: Winslow Homer – Making Art, Making History at the Clark Art Institute (Williamstown, MA.) on Monday morning, August 26. The Friends will not be providing transportation; however, we will assist in setting up carpools. Drive/car pool to the Clark; suggested departure time from Clifton Park is 8:00am. Directions will be provided. The cost of museum entrance is the discounted group price of $12 per person. You will tour the exhibit with Kate Dudding who will be available to answer questions asked by an individual (i.e. she can’t give a tour in the gallery to a group.) Recognizing & Coping with Caregiver Stress

Saratoga County Arts Council Exhibition CLIFTON PARK –A Saratoga County Arts Council “Art in Public Places” Exhibition is on display in the 2nd floor Gallery at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library, for the month of August 2013. Featured is the textile and quilt work of the Quilt North Guild. The title of the exhibit is Small Works. This exhibit showcases smaller “wall” size quilts, as compared to the traditional “bed” size quilts which our members create. The quilts show a range of skills and interests, from traditional table linens to artistic surfaces that might be more at home in a gallery setting.  Piecing, applique, hand and machine quilting, dyeing, painting, embroidery all have a place in contemporary quiltmaking. Create A Peaceful And Healthy Sleeping Environment It is easy to overlook the benefits of a good night’s sleep. Without adequate rest a person can be left feeling irritable, distracted and sluggish. Information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate insufficient sleep has become a public health epidemic. An estimated 50 to 70 million American adults report having a sleep or wakefulness disorder, and women are twice as likely to suffer from insomnia than men. Plus, one in three people suffer from some form of insomnia during their lifetime, offers the organization Better Sleep for Life. In some instances, lack of sleep or too much sleep might be indicative of a medical condition, but it could just be related to poor sleep hygiene and an uncomfortable sleeping environment. Making some changes could make all the difference. * Start with your mattress. You will spend between seven to 10 hours in your bed each and every night. An uncomfortable mattress could be an underlying factor in your sleep problems. If your bed is several years old, it could pay to invest in a new mattress and box spring. If you sleep with your spouse and your bed is too small, upgrading to a larger size could provide the room you need. If you cannot afford a new mattress, buying a mattress topper in memory foam could mask any problems for the time being.

* Balance light and dark. In order to trigger sleepiness at the right time, it is essential to get at least 30 minutes of natural sunlight each day during the morning or afternoon. In the evening, begin dimming the lights to trigger the body’s natural internal clock and stimulate the production of the natural hormone melatonin, which relaxes the body into sleep. Keep a dark bedroom -- invest in blackout curtains if need be. * Consider white noise. Giving your brain a noise to associate with relaxing sleep can help you drift off more quickly. White noise can also mask other sounds that may distract sleep, such as traffic outside or a partner snoring. White noise can come from a special alarm clock that provides soothing sounds of rain or waves. Many people find running a fan in the bedroom provides the right amount of noise and also helps circulate air throughout the room. * Make the bedroom a cozy retreat. Your bedroom should be a relaxing sanctuary. Fill it with cozy cushions and pillows. Make sure the room is clean and clutter-free. Relaxing blues and purples can be soothing colors to use in decorating, and the use of lavender essential oil could also add to the relaxing environment.

* Avoid distractions. When setting up your bedroom, do not fill it with electronics, such as a computer, tablet and television. These devices could contribute to wakefulness and actually impede your ability to get the rest you need. * Keep cool. A cool bedroom is key to drifting off to sleep. Sweating and overheating can keep you awake, so drop the temperature down at night and dress lightly for bed. You want to feel comfortable and not too hot or cold. If sleeplessness becomes a chronic problem and is not alleviated by changing the sleeping environment, visit a doctor.

The Color Dilemma By Tresa Erickson Most of us have been there, done that—perusing paint chips for days on end, selecting a few colors, applying them to the walls and hating the results. We don’t have the time, money or desire for a redo, so we tell ourselves to live with the paint colors for a while to see if they grow on us. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don’t, and we go through the process all over again or just learn to live with what’s there. How can we ensure we pick the right paint colors the first time around? Unfortunately, there is no surefire way to ensure you pick the right paint colors the first time around. There are some things you can do to improve your odds, however. Study the room long beforehand and determine the purposes you want it to serve. Will it be a place to relax and watch TV, a place to gather with others and eat, or a place to study and work? Read up on the color wheel to determine what color families will make the best backdrop for the purposes you intend for the room. If you want to use the room primarily as a place to relax, for example, reds and yellows might not be a good choice, as these will evoke energy and passion. A soft brown or blue, on the other hand, might do just the trick.

Shop around for paint colors. Go to several stores and select as many paint chips as possible. Bring them home, take them to the room you plan to paint and lay them all out on a table. Look at them at various times of the day and in various lighting conditions. Know what each color will look like at any given time. Toss out the chips you don’t like and tape the ones remaining to the wall where you can see them throughout the day.

Narrow your choices until you have 10 or less. Then research the paint brands and find out how they stack up against each other. Choose the top ones and make sure the colors of choice come in the type of finish you desire. You might not be able to find that sassy hot pink or fiesta lime green in the eggshell finish you want. Finally, get some paint samples. Many stores now carry small paint samples that you can purchase for less than the price of a quart. Apply your samples to the wall near each other and check them out at various times of the day under various lighting conditions. Continue narrowing your color choices until you have the exact palette you want. If you’re still undecided, consider painting some wallboards in the colors in question. Then set the wallboards along the walls in the room you plan to paint and live with them for a while to see which ones appeal to you most. With any luck, you will soon know what you want and love the results!

www.capitalgutters.com 878-2799 How To Prep Your Yard For Summer Parties Backyard soirees are a staple of summer for many families. Whether hosting a family reunion, a gathering of friends or a mix of both, such gatherings can be a great time to reconnect with your loved ones in a relaxing and natural setting. Hosting such gatherings might not require as much work as organizing a more formal get-together, but that doesn’t mean summer soirees don’t require a little work in advance of the guests’ arrival. That’s especially true if you plan to host the party outdoors in your yard, which will need a little TLC before guests arrive. The following are a few tips to get your yard ready before your next summer soiree. * Cut the grass and clear your walkways. Cutting the grass before guests arrive might seem like common sense, but try to do so a couple of days before the party. This gives you an extra day or so to clear the walkways of grass clippings, and it saves you the trouble of cutting the grass on the day of the party when you’re likely to have more pressing tasks to take care of. * Decorate your yard. Decorations are a staple of parties held indoors, so why not decorate your home’s exterior when hosting a get-together in the backyard? Use freshly cut flowers from your own garden as centerpieces on your patio furniture, or purchase flowers of various colors from your local florist to add a dash or two of color to the festivities. * Clear the yard of toys. Before guests arrive, clear the yard of the kids’ toys, putting them away so guests don’t injure themselves by stepping on errant action figures or skateboards left hidden in the grass.

Stamped concrete is the affordable choice for an upscale finish, providing a genuine appearance with the durability you desire.

(518) 696-2551

hoffmanstampedconcrete.com

info@hoffmanstampedconcrete.com * Trim trees and shrubs around walkways. While a backyard barbecue is less formal than a party held indoors, you still want your home to be as accommodating as possible for your guests. Don’t forget to trim trees and shrubs around the walkways so guests don’t feel like they’re on safari when coming to and from the backyard. * Make sure outdoor lighting is working properly. If you’re about to host your first event of the summer, inspect your home’s exterior lighting so everyone isn’t left sitting in the dark. Check patio lighting and replace any bulbs and make sure the lights along your walkways are functioning at full capacity so guests can safely navigate their way around the party. You may even want to string holiday lights around the patio to create a more laid-back ambiance in which guests can relax without lights beating down on them.

* Protect your guests from insects. Insects like mosquitoes can quickly turn a swinging soiree into a nuisance, so purchase some decorative citronella candles to repel mosquitoes. Tiki torches along walkways and around the patio furniture may also prove effective insect repellants. In addition, if there are any areas around your property where water has gathered, such as bird fountains or puddles from recent rains, do your best to get rid of that water. Water attracts many insects, which lay their eggs in the standing water. The less standing water around your property, the less likely any uninvited insect guests are to appear.

Backyard gatherings are a staple of summer. But even if such soirees are less formal, hosts still must survey their property and address any issues before guests arrive.

Color Underfoot By Tresa Erickson It’s been quite some time since you’ve bought new carpeting for your home, and it is starting to show. What was once soft and stain free is no longer. It’s time you replaced the carpeting, and while there are many factors to consider from pile cut to

fiber to performance rating, the one that has got you stumped is color. You know you don’t want white or black carpeting, but beyond that, you have no idea. Carpeting can be costly, and once you purchase it and arrange to have it installed, there’s usually no turning back. You’re stuck with the color you selected, so it better be right. Here are

some tips to help you through the color dilemma. What is the size of the space? Generally, lighter colors open up a space, while darker colors close it in, making for a cozier feel. While dark colored carpeting will hide more stains, it could make your small spaces appear even smaller.

How much traffic does the space receive? While lighter colors are more easily soiled than darker colors; darker colors will show dust and lint. If the room(s) where you are replacing the carpet receives a lot of use, you might want to consider a color in the medium range to minimize the appearance of dust, dirt and lint.

What is the purpose of the space? Bright-colored carpeting might prove a real distraction in a room intended for work or relaxation such as a home office or bedroom. It might do wonders, however, in a playroom or workout space, adding to the energetic feel.

How is the space designed? If you are satisfied with the design and plan to live with it for a long time to come, you might want to choose carpeting that will enhance it, such as an Oriental patterned carpet for an Asian-inspired dining room. If, on the other hand, you like to change things up, then you might to opt for a neutral colored carpet. That way, you won’t have to worry about designing around the carpeting. You can just add an Oriental rug on top and switch it out when ready.

What kind of flow do you want to create in the space? Some people want a continuous flow from room to room, and flooring is one of the best ways to create this. If you have wall-to-wall carpeting throughout your home and you want to keep the flow continuous, stick to one color like tan or gray to create a neutral backdrop. Just make sure the color you select varies somewhat from that of the walls and furniture, else you will end up with one big box.

Most importantly, what color do you like? It won’t matter how attractive that silvery gray carpet looks in your home if you hate it. Choose a color that appeals to you that you can live with for a long time to come. Take home samples and review them at various times of the day in different types of light to get a real sense of how they will look in your home. What looks like an elephant gray at the store may look more like a pewter in your home. Know what you are getting and choose the color of carpeting that will best serve your needs today and for many tomorrows to come.

Carpenter Wanted By Tresa Erickson

You are a do-it-yourselfer. You enjoy tackling projects around the house and spend many weekends doing so. While you are skilled in many areas, you most certainly are not a carpenter. You can't cut a piece of wood straight, much less make the cabinets you need to house the entertainment components in your family room. You need a carpenter. l Carpenters generally fall into two categories: rough or finish. e Rough carpenters specialize in building homes, particularly in r framing them and making sure everything is level, square and plumb. Finish carpenters specialize in the detail work, installing trim, banisters and the like. Some finish carpenters specialize in building cabinets and furniture. They are known as rcabinetmakers. Since you are interested in cabinets, you might want to look for a cabinetmaker or a finish carpenter who has eexperience in building cabinets. You should treat the process for hiring a carpenter just like you would for any other profesnsional. Ask family and friends for recommendations, browse through listings in the newspaper and phone book, and check online. From these sources, draw up a list of potential candiedates. Conduct phone interviews and find out about the carpenter's skills, qualifications, availability and fees. Discuss the work you would like to have done and see if they are interested.

l

l

Clifton Park North PENNYSAVER - PCN

The information you gather from your phone interviews should help you narrow your list considerably. Then you can meet with each candidate face to face and find out more. Make sure you ask to see a sample of their work and get a list of references. Check out the references and find out what the customer did and did not like about the carpenter's work. Discuss with the carpenter again the work you would like to have done and ask

them to give you an estimate in writing. Once you find a carpenter you like, hire them and ask them to write up a contract for the work. This will ensure there are no misunderstandings. Work out a schedule with the carpenter and keep in contact with them to ensure they meet your expectations.

Reg. $23.00 NOW $10.00 Another Purpose By Tresa Erickson Got a nice entryway, but not sure what to do with it? Set up a small table by the door where everyone can drop their keys and mail and that's about it? Make the most of your entryway by turning it into a usable space. Although typically small, entryways make wonderful spaces for a variety of activities from reading to listening to music. In order to determine what would make the best use of your entryway, you need to think about your needs. Could you and your family use a place to read? Could you use a place to work on the laptop? Could you use a place to display collectibles? Along with your needs, you must consider the dimensions and layout of the space. You may need a place to read, but if there is no room for a comfy chair or love seat, that idea may not work. The entryway may be more suitable for the display of collectibles, especially if it has a lot of wall space. Imagine having your spouse's entire collection of antique fishing lures hanging in the entryway. What an impressive welcome that would make to visitors. You also need to consider the traffic your entryway receives. If people are forever coming in and out of your front door, you may not want to turn it into a cozy reading or computer nook. How in the world would you ever get anything done? A buffet area for party nights or a mini game room with a drop-leaf card table, on the other hand, might be more suitable.

www.denaliconstructionservices.net Whatever purpose you decide to have your entryway serve, make sure you decorate it accordingly. If it's going to be a music room, tuck the piano under the stairs and provide some chairs for listening. Add a light above the piano and a basket for sheet music. Hang up some inspiring prints, and voila, your music room entryway is complete.

If your entryway flows into another room, you may want to go with a complementary color scheme to keep the décor consistent. If it does not, feel free to use whatever color scheme you want to enhance the function of the room and invoke the appropriate mood.

Don't forget in all of the rearranging that your entryway still serves as an entrance to your home. Make sure guests feel welcome and have a mat to wipe their feet on. Make sure family members have a place to stash their coats, keys and mail. Don't make the décor so luxurious that everyone starts coming in the back door instead. The larger your entryway, the more likely it can serve more than one purpose. Put on your thinking cap and take advantage of all of that space.

Working Within Your Budget!

A new roof can be one of the more expensive repairs for homeowners. But homeowners don’t have to break the bank when it comes to replacing a roof, which can be made from a variety of materials that can vary greatly in price. Asphalt shingles are the most affordable roofing material and that budget-friendly price is one reason why asphalt shingles are so popular. The asphalt shingles of today are also durable, which was not always the case. Ceramic tiles are another roofing material, but these tend to be quite expensive. However, their price has made them quite rare, which might be attractive to prospective buyers when the time comes to sell the house. Durable and aesthetically appealing, metal roofing is another option that’s popular in areas they get heavy snowfall because snow does not build up on the metal like it might on other materials. The price of metal roofing varies significantly, so homeowners considering a metal roof should do some comparison shopping before making a decision. Slate tiles are another roofing material, but one that’s very labor-intensive to install and, as a result, costly as well. But slate tiles are very durable, in some cases lasting as long as half a century or more, so homeowners who install slate tile can rest easy knowing the roof they install now will likely be the last roof they ever pay for.

Little House, Big Perks

How To Clean Your Grill

By Tresa Erickson

Grilling is a summertime tradition at households across the country. The family grillmaster typically looks forward to a night spent preparing a perfectly grilled meal for his or her family. But few grillmasters look forward to cleaning the grill, a necessary step to ensure your next grilled meal is as safe as your last one was delicious. If cleaning the grill is a chore, then at least it is one of the easier chores around the house. All it takes is some routine maintenance to keep a grill clean and safe, and such maintenance need not take much time.

You've always lived in a small home and loved it. With far less house and yard to care for, you've had more time to devote to other interests. Now that you're adding to your family, however, you're not sure if you can continue to enjoy the perks of small home living. Relax. Unless your family is growing substantially larger, you can remain where you are and make a few changes to maximize your home's potential. Storage can be a problem in any size of home. If your small home lacks storage space, consider creating some built-ins. Built-in bookshelves, cabinets and seating make wonderful additions to any home. You just need to place them in the best area possible and be careful not to take up too much floor space. In a home lacking in square footage, multipurpose is the name of the game. Make sure your rooms serve more than one purpose. Tuck a desk in the corner of your dining room and use the space to eat and work in. Slide your upright piano into your entryway and use the space as a foyer and a music room. Add a bench to your second floor landing and use the space for reading. The same principle applies to your furniture choices. Don't bring a piece into your home unless it can serve more than one purpose. Consider a sleeper sofa for your living room. You can sit on it during the day and use it for guests at night. Select a comfortable chair for your desk. You can sit in it and work at your desk and slide it into the living room when needed for extra seating. Switch out your coffee table for an ottoman. You can use it as a footrest when watching TV and as extra seating when company comes over. Select smaller equipment and accessories. Trade out your bulky TV and computer monitor for flat-screen models. Use hanging bedside lamps rather than large tableside lamps. Choose smaller appliances for your kitchen. You will be amazed at how much more room you have just by using smaller items. Light up the rooms in your home and make them appear larger. Use a variety of lighting sources at various heights around each room. Throw open the drapes during the day and let the natural light in. Bring in some mirrors to reflect light around each room. Keep your color palette light. Dark colors tend to close in the space, while lighter colors keep it bright and airy. Reserve darker, bolder colors for accents to add drama and depth. Add to your square footage with an outdoor space. Power-wash that old patio, add some new furniture and plants, and presto, you have extended your living area outdoors. Throw open the French doors during parties and give guests plenty of room to mingle. If you long to stay where you are, don't let the thought of a larger family prevent you from doing so. Make adjustments as needed and make your home work for you.

* Brush the grates with a brass wire brush. The surfaces of the grill are best cleaned with a brass wire brush, which can quickly and effectively remove leftover food and marinade from the grill while preventing the growth of bacteria. Soak the brush in hot, soapy water once the grill has been cleaned, and keep the brush indoors to keep it from succumbing to the elements. * Prevent rust. Spraying the grill with cooking oil after it has been cleaned can prevent unsightly and potentially unhealthy rust from forming over the life of your grill. This will increase your grill's life expectancy and give your family members and guests some peace of mind knowing the grill is bacteria-free and well-maintained. * Clean the grease traps. Grease traps can be a fire hazard, especially if they are not routinely cleaned. Grease is very flammable, and it can easily increase the temperatures on the grill's surfaces. Ridding a grill of grease might require a little elbow grease of your own, but it's worth the effort to reduce your risk of fire.

* Dump the coals. Charcoal grills might not be as widely used as gas grills, but traditionalists who have stayed loyal to charcoal must dump the coals once the night has ended. Give the coals ample time to cool, shutting off oxygen to the grill to speed up the process, and make sure there are no coals still burning before you discard them.

Power Generators May Be A Good Investment Generators are not something people think about on a daily basis. However, in the wake of the powerful storms that have battered the country in recent years, more and more people have realized just how valuable generators can be. Portable generators as well as stationary standby generators have become must-have items for many homeowners. Portable Generators Many portable generators provide temporary power by using a fossil-based fuel, typically unleaded gasoline, and tend to range in power from 500 watts to 17.5 kW. The more expensive and

Hospitals and retail businesses often have standby generators installed on their buildings to automatically switch over to this power source should the electrical grid go down. Homeowners are looking to these devices to offer standby power as well.

larger the unit, the more amperage it will be able to supply. In a portable generator, the motor is typically housed on a metal frame with wheels to move the generator where it is needed. Once fired up, the generator converts the power produced by the motor into electrical current that can supply many of the devices in a home by way of extension cords plugged into the generator. A portable generator will only run as long as it has fuel. Homeowners need to frequently fill up the fuel tank if they plan to run the generator around the clock. Gassing up generators can be difficult should a power outage also knock out power to the fuel pumps at gas stations. Propane and natural gas generators are also available, although they may be more expensive than gasoline-powered units.

While a portable generator may cost a few hundred dollars, standby generators can cost from a few thousand dollars to as much as $15,000 for larger units that can power much of a household. Standby generators also require installation by a professional electrician, adding to their overall cost.

Standby System Generators

The standby generator is only hooked up to specific fuses in the fuse box to run certain outlets or appliances in the home. A standby generator will not supply power to all of the outlets in a home.

Standby generators can be expensive, but many people find the cost of a standby generator is well worth it to maintain power in the event of an outage or emergency.

A standby generator is like a heavy-duty car engine, complete with a radiator, gas tank and an alternator that generates power. The entire setup is contained in a weather-proof box, which is connected to the main fuse box of the home by a cable. When power is lost from the electric wires outside of a home, the generator senses it and starts up, all he while blocking any power from the electric lines from the power station to prevent a feedback of power.

Shade Trees Keep Homes Cool People take many different steps to stay cool when the temperatures rise. A particularly common method to remaining comfortable is turning up the air conditioning and staying indoors. But what about the people who want to be cool and enjoy fresh air as well? Shade trees could be their best allies against the sweltering temperatures. Most individuals will agree that it feels much cooler under a shade tree than it does when standing in direct sunlight. The nonprofit organization Trees Forever says the difference in temperature readings can be monumental. In 2010, roughly 20 volunteers worked with the organization to compare the actual temperature of shaded and unshaded surfaces around a county fairground in Iowa. The volunteers used laser thermometers and took readings from surfaces such as sidewalks, parking lots and grassy lawn areas. The volunteers found differences in temperature ranging from 14 to 55o F depending on the surface measured. That’s a considerable difference and could help a person remain cool.

dense foliage will remain on the tree into late fall.

* Moraine Locust: This tree is cold-hardy and can withstand urban conditions. It is fast-growing and provides light to medium shade. * Silver Maple: This is the most rapid growing of all maples and will be a large spreading tree. * Tulip Trees: These very large trees are coveted for their flowers that resemble the shape of tulips. This tree should be given plenty of space in which to grow. * Virginia Pine: Because its branches aren’t as close to the ground as other pine trees, the Virginia pine can be an effective shade tree.

* White Birch: This tree, also known as the European birch, grows 30 to 60 feet tall and has drooping branches. The smaller leaves offer dappled shade. The peeling white bark can stand out in a landscape.

Trees are a practical way to stay cool and are an energy-saving means to keep temperatures down. Planting trees around a property can reduce reliance on air-conditioning systems, saving a person money while reducing dependency on fuel sources. Other live vegetation, including grass and yard plants, can also promote an overall cooling effect, compared to hardscape surfaces that radiate heat. Numerous varieties of trees can serve as shade trees. These are typically deciduous trees that will have leaves during the warm-weather months and then shed them when the cooler seasons arise. However, some evergreens and tropical trees also work well as shade producers in and around a landscape. * American Arborvitae: This slow-growing evergreen is typically used to create tall hedges and privacy screens. It also offers year-round moderate to deep shade when the trees reach maximum height of 25 to 40 feet. * American Beech: This tree offers shade and also edible nuts. It can grow up to 100 feet in fertile, well-draining soils. * Autumn Blaze Maples: These trees are known for their outstanding fall foliage. However, they also are fast-growing shade trees that can cool down any landscape. * Bald Cyprus: The fern-like leaves of this tree provide moderate shade. This cyprus is lowmaintenance and has few problems with insects or disease. * Chinese Elm: This rapid-growing tree is excellent for screening or providing a windbreak. Small, dense foliage will fill in about five years, when it will be good for shade. * Crepe Myrtle Tree: Myrtles are fast-growing shade trees in southern climates. In northern climates, they may grow more like a perennial shrub. * Little-leaf Linden: This is a fragrant tree that blooms with yellow flowers in early summer. The

Page 21

* White Oak: Oak trees make excellent shade trees, but the White Oak can grow to 100 feet tall with a spread of 80 feet in its canopy. It has thick horizontal branches that contribute to its shadeproducing benefits. Shade trees can drop temperatures on a property by several degrees, reducing dependency on air conditioning

Trees in one’s yard can not only keep temperatures cool, but also provide habitats for birds and small animals and act as a food source for plenty of creatures.

Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. L.A.C.

of his brother. Stars Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie.

Bullitt (1968): Steve McQueen stars as the San Francisco cop looking to find the kingpin who killed the witness under his protection. The actor did much of the driving of the ‘68 Mustang in this movie, leaving only the riskiest maneuvers to his stunt double.

The Fast and the Furious (2001): An undercover cop infiltrates the underbelly of Los Angeles street racers. This movie spawned a series of sequels with more automotive special effects than substance.

American Graffiti (1973): A coming of age movie set in the 1960s about four teenagers going off to college. They spend one last summer cruising the Sunset Strip and getting into trouble. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford and Ron Howard, this classic was directed by George Lucas of “Star Wars” fame. The Cannonball Run (1983): Eccentric competitors engage in an illegal cross-country car race. A who’s who of stars, including Burt Reynolds, Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, and Dean Martin star in this action-packed flick. Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000): A retired car thief must get back into the business, stealing 50 cars in one night to save the life
