Army Trades Weekend At Saratoga National Historical Park

STILLWATER - In the Revolutionary War, armies had a lot more to do than fight. They employed a variety of professional tradesmen and women who worked to provide and repair supplies needed by the troops. Blacksmiths made or fixed ironwork; tailors and seamstress sewed and repaired clothing; Woodworkers built barrels, carriages, and wheels; Tinsmiths made artillery cartridge casings; Armorers repaired muskets; Cordwainers made military accoutrements and shoes for the troops. If you’d like to see how common military items were manufactured by hand in 1770’s Revolutionary America, well before the age of industrialization, this is a great opportunity! Chat with demonstrators during Army Trades Weekend Saturday and Sunday July 14-15, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and learn how items are made 18th-century style. Craftsmen will be set up on the lawn at the Visitor Center. See the tools of the trade, ask questions, and learn about those who supported armies on the move. This event is free and open to the public. For more information about this or other events, please call the Visitor Center at 518-670-2985 or check our website at www.nps. gov/sara or on Facebook and Twitter: @SaratogaNHP

Veterans Hall Open House

SCHAGHTICOKE - Saturday, July 14, 2018, 10:002:00. Veterans Hall Honors All Veterans Past and Present. This building is located on the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds and is comprised of a group of volunteers who feel passionate about thanking our veterans. Many have visited Veterans Hall during the fair or have come to an Open House to pay tribute to our veterans and say thank you. Everyone knows and loves a veteran and many come to share that connection. Some come to see a picture, a clipping or perhaps an item donated by family or a friend of a veteran that served our country. In addition we are compiling a list of veteran’s names from Rensselaer, Saratoga, Albany, Washington, and surrounding counties. We can use your help in this endeavor. This will be an ongoing objective for years to

Heading for Home: Birdies and Brews Golf Event by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

Joseph Battaglia has been a fan of both thoroughbred and standardbred horseracing his whole life. The president of Heading for Home Racehorse Retraining and Adoption Center, Battaglia realized when he became a standardbred racehorse owner in Saratoga Springs that there is a critical need for the aftercare of retired racehorses in the racing industry. Battaglia, along with other current members of the Heading for Home board, started the charity to help with addressing the “where do they go after racing” issue. “We thought the concept of Heading for Home would be an option for owners to consider,” he said. Volunteers of Heading Home have various backgrounds in the local equine industries and in the local business community. Heading for Home board member and practicing attorney, Sarah Burger, has represented clients in the horse industry. A native of Saratoga, she grew up around horses and believes in the mission of Heading for Home. “The organization’s focus on the aftercare of racehorses in conjunction with its focus on pairing horses with equine therapy services is so important in the horse industry,” Burger said. “I am a part of this organization because I believe in what it is doing.” The common denominator: offering the racing industry an option for horses at retirement. “A success story about a racehorse going on to a purposeful and fulfilling life after racing activity is something that should be celebrated as much as any successes they may have had on the racetrack,” Battaglia said. It is no secret that Saratoga Springs is a horse town. “The horses are the stars of the show when they are on the track and have much more to give after their racing days have ended. It is a responsibility that everyone associated with racing in any way should share,” he said. He thinks the community should be concerned for horses as they age off the track. “Saratoga being a racing community should take this responsibility very seriously since so much of our local economy is driven by its history of hosting horseracing. We owe a lot back to the horses. Just look at the walls of almost any Photo: Retired racehorses establishment you go into in the Saratoga area and you will likely Where’s Danny and Rock see images of horses.” Dj competed at Saratoga Heading for Home is one way Battaglia and the all-volunteer tracks and went through the board and staff are trying to save one horse at a time. The program Heading for Home program. Photos by Tracey Buyce accepts both thoroughbreds and standardbreds. “We help transition Horse Photography. them from the racetrack environment to a more relaxed setting and then evaluate each for potential options to adopters,” he said. “Our horses have participated in equine assisted counseling programs while in the care of Heading for Home. We are in the process of developing our connections in the community to use our horses and facilities for physical therapy programs as well. We are open to coordinating with other charities to expand the potential uses for our horses to create as many off the track options as possible for the horses,” he said. Heading for Home is a member of the Saratoga Racehorse Aftercare Charitable Endeavors collation (RACE). “RACE works together with other local charities in support of our common racehorses’ aftercare missions, including hosting the upcoming Run/Walk for the Horses on September 1st,” Battaglia said. The Run/Walk will be held at the Saratoga Spa State Park and will benefit participating local non-profits that rescue and provide second chances for ex-racehorses. Heading for Home is also participating in a joint program with Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at its farm this summer. On Tuesday, July 17 Heading for Home is hosting its second annual charity golf event at Fairways of Halfmoon Golf Club, which includes local craft beer tastings at its award ceremony. The cost is $125 a player and includes lunch, dinner, golf, cart and craft beer samples. Raffles and prizes will round out the day. One hundred percent of proceeds raised at the tournament benefits local Heading for Home programs. “We rely heavily on donations and other support to keep our programs going and possibly expand them when feasible,” Battaglia said. Anyone interested in directly supporting the golf event can participate as players, sponsors or perhaps even by providing raffle items for the event. “The topic of racehorse aftercare becomes a hot topic during the local thoroughbred meet but the need goes on throughout the year. If someone shares that concern this is one way for them to step up and be an active participant in making a difference,” Battaglia said. For more information on how to register for the golf event or to volunteer please visit the organization’s website at www.headingforhomeadoptionhorses.org. Emily Marcason-Tolmie, a Saratoga native, is a writer, researcher, wife and mother. Emily and her husband, Ryan, are the parents to two wonderful little boys, ages 4 and 1.

SUMMER SOWING

Some seeds like tomatoes and peppers must be started inside in March but the real value (savings) to be gained from vegetable gardening is from crops that we seed directly in the garden. I have to say that there really isn’t anything at all difficult about starting seeds directly in the garden... much easier than starting seeds indoors in winter. Lettuce and all the other greens like chard and spinach are good examples. Radishes are also very rewarding since you can sow a row every two weeks and they grow and mature in less than a month. Go to the garden center and pick up the “Vegetable Schedule”. It is a wonderful resource for the beginning gardener showing when the different plants and seeds should be planted. You can get one at any Hewitt’. Let’s take a look at beans. According to the vegetable schedule you can start sowing them in early May or anytime through the third week of July. As you can see, there’s plenty of time to start a crop or two of beans. Now let’s take a look at a bean seed pack. The back of the seed pack has complete growing instructions. Following the instructions, make a little trench 2” deep as per the instructions and placed the seeds at the bottom. Then cover them with 2” of soil and water them in. Now just need to keep them moist and they’ll sprout in a week or less. Once they sprout, you’ll need to thin them out by removing any that were closer together than 6” Growing instructions are on the packet. spacing the seed pack indicated they need. It is tempting to let them all got but you’ll get better results if the plants are spaced so they get lots of light and air circulation. That’s pretty much it. All seeds work the same way...corn, beets, radishes and so on. Learn to use your Vegetable Schedule to time your plantings. Once you go through a season, you’ll see that it is possible to get a great deal of food from even a small plot. “It’d too late to start a vegetable garden” is also something beginners like to believe...that they’ve missed the opportunity to have a vegetable garden once Memorial Day has passed. If you spend some time with the vegetable schedule you’ll soon see that vegetables aren’t something that you “plant in the spring and harvest in the fall”. There is a huge planting season that won’t even start until late June and into July. Here’s a list of just some of our summer sowing possibilities: • Basil-Sow seeds late June through late July. • Beans-Sow seeds of quick varieties until 3rd week of July. • Broccoli-Sow seeds until mid July. • Brussels Sprouts-Sow seeds until mid July. • Cabbage-Plant transplants through mid July. • Carrots-Sow seeds through mid July. • Collards-Plant transplants until August 1st. • Dill-Sow seeds late July to early August. • Escarole, endive-Sow seeds early July through August. Sowing the bean seeds. • Kale-Sow seeds through first week of August. • Kohlrabi-Sow seeds through first week of August. • Lettuce-Sow in groups two weeks through September 1st. • Mustard-Sow seeds mid July to mid August. • Parsley-Sow seeds mid June through mid August. • Peas-Sow seeds in early to mid July. • Radish-Sow seeds until early September at two week intervals. • Spinach-Sow seeds late July to early August. • Summer squash-Sow seeds until mid July. Beans properly spaced. • Turnip-Sow seeds late June to early August. Seed packs are cheap so play around with them. There are plenty at the garden center so take some time to read the backs. Pay attention to the “days to harvest” information. As of now we have at least 100 days left until frost. You can have a crop of beans in harvest in 50 to 60 days or radishes in less than 30! Many crops like Brussels Sprouts and Swiss Chard aren’t bothered by frost and can be harvested into October most years. There’s something quite rewarding about starting your crops from seed right in the garden. Try it out... you’ll be hooked in no time. Thanks for the read.

CAPITAL DISTRICT - If you have a love for gardening, landscaping and related activities, and you would like to share it with others, please consider becoming a Master Gardener volunteer. Besides joining in a variety of activities with others who share your interest, Master Gardener volunteers assist Cornell Cooperative Extension personnel in providing educational horticulture programs, community and garden-based learning projects, soil and diagnostic clinics, and demonstrations, and staff a phone helpline for their county residents. Applications for the Master Gardener program are being accepted now for the 2018 class and interviews will be held during the summer. Individuals accepted into the program will have an orientation in early September and begin weekly training sessions on Thursdays, during September through December. Master Gardeners receive over sixty hours of training covering an array of horticultural topics, including botany, entomology, plant pathology, soil science, organic gardening, and integrated pest management. Participants receive a Master Gardener Certificate after finishing the training, completing a final project and contributing a minimum of 50 to 60 hours of volunteer service. There is a program fee of $275.00 to defray the cost of training materials plus an additional $30.00 fee for a background screening. To learn more about the Master Gardener program or to request an application, please contact the Master Gardener Coordinator in your county. Schenectady County residents please go to www.cceschenectady.org or contact Angela Tompkins at amj22@cornell.edu or (518) 372-1622, ext. 259. Albany County residents

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week Simone

What a beautiful 4-5 month old Rottie mix girl!!! We have heard that Simone is SUCH a sweetheart!! She has that friendly Rottie disposition that we know Rottie lovers adore! She became friends with little Garkfunkel while they were in Foster care, and now they are heading up North together so that they can find their furever homes! We know that she’s going to make a fantastic addition to a lucky family soon!

Rock & Dancer Meet Rock & Dancer!!! These two grew up in a home with their Momma, but now since they are around 10 weeks old and their Momma is getting spayed soon, it is time for them to find their own furever homes! We are not sure what their mix is, but we are told they are little Lab mixes! They are very well socialized and personable!

Wade Shepherd Duo These two are beautiful! If you are a lover of larger breeds like Shepherds and Hounds, we think you will really like these two! They are Shepherd/Hound mix babies who are around 3 months old and they are super sweet! They have been in foster care for a couple of weeks, where they have opened up and become incredibly friendly pups!

518-368-8558 Make Moving Much Easier

It should come as no surprise that spring kicks off one of the busiest times of year in the housing market. Warm weather makes it more comfortable to see and display homes, leading to more listings and open houses.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average person in the United States changes residences more than 11 times in his or her lifetime. With each move, the process of moving may become more familiar. But even the most practiced nomad can find moving to be an overwhelming experience. Those on the cusp of moving and nervous about packing up and leaving can employ a few tricks to make moving much easier. Research areas carefully Buyers are advised to do their research when seeking new towns or cities to call home. There are many factors to consider, including school district ratings, proximity to shopping, distance from work/commute times, availability of transportation, climate, and crime ratings. Before falling in love with a particular home, potential buyers can visit the area in

which the home is located during a typical weekday to get a feel for the atmosphere. Check out shopping centers, observe the residents and drive by the schools and businesses. This can help paint an accurate picture that may or may not differ from that depicted in the real estate listing.

Secure temporary storage

Stack the deck

ensuring clutter won’t get in the way of renovation projects. New homeowners also can take their time sorting through boxes and getting rid of items they may not need in their new homes.

Working with qualified professionals who have gone through the moving process before can make for easier work for buyers and sellers. Ask for recommendations regarding real estate companies, real estate attorneys, home inspectors, insurance agents, and all of the other people who will assist with buying, selling and moving. Carefully vet these professionals, relying on thirdparty reviews as well as any information provided by the Better Business Bureau.

It can help to put some belongings into a storage center prior to moving, and then gradually take items from the storage unit to your new home. This will free up space to make repairs to your new home and give you time to figure out decorating schemes while

Get estimates and verify licensing The BBB advises consumers to verify all licensing for movers. Solicit at least three in-home estimates and get those figures in writing. Confirm insurance coverage for the company chosen, and be sure to have all agreed upon information

spelled out explicitly in a written contract. Red flags to consider include movers who don’t make on-site inspections for estimates and those who demand payment in advance before the move. Have a first-week survival kit New homeowners can pick up takeout restaurant menus and premade grocery store meals. In addition, stock up on staples such as paper plates, toilet tissue, light bulbs, and cleaning supplies in advance of the move so you won’t have to unpack everything at mealtime or when you want to clean after arriving at your new home.
