COME JOIN US IN GREENWICH JUNE 13 AND 14 FOR THE WHIPPLE CITY FESTIVAL GREENWICH - This year, the Whipple City Festival will once again feature living history demonstrations in Dorr Park. On Saturday June 14th there will be four regiments reenacting four different periods in history. The 2nd Continental Artillery Regiment is a group of re-enactors from the Revolutionary War. Cannon will be on display as well as firearms from that period. Musket firings will take place at different times during the day and several campsites will be set for display with reenactors in period dress. The 125th NY Regiment Association will be representing the Civil War period. This living history group represents a typical military campsite of 1861 and is chartered with the NYS Education Department. Tents and campsites will be set up. This group will have musket firings during the festival and wooden muskets will be available for children to help the re-enactors do musket drills. The 99th Infantry Division will be representing World War II. A field table, 4-5 puptents, an ammo box as well as WWII weapons will be on display. This year we are also adding WWI to our group of reenactors. They will have a table with memorabilia from that era. Also in Dorr Park will be The Greenwich Town Historian and the Willard Mountain DAR and the Washington Co. Historical Society with information booths and items for sale. The park is still open to having other historical organizations set up info booths. Contact the chamber at info@greenwichchamber.org. Bring the whole family to the Whipple City Festival and enjoy the fun, music, history and food at this annual event.

STILLWATER - On Saturday 14 June 2014 at 7:00 p.m., Saratoga National Historical Park hosts actor Gary Stamm as he portrays President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a real “fireside chat” describing a 1939 royal visit from the King and Queen of Britain and the fascinating implications it had for our country and the entire world. What do you serve to the King and Queen of Britain if they come to visit your home? In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt took them on a picnic in the scenic Hudson Valley and served the great American treat of hot dogs. “Mr. Stamm really brings Roosevelt to life,” notes park ranger Joe Craig. “Franklin Roosevelt played a vital role as Governor of New York and President of the United States, in preserving Saratoga Battlefield.” The event is presented by the Friends of Saratoga Battlefield, and is free of charge to the public at the Battlefield Visitor Center. Please bring a lawn chair and insect repellant. Saratoga National Historical Park offers a variety of programs throughout the year. * Beach bound: A relaxing day at the beach may be the perfect way to spend Father’s Day. Dad can enjoy the entire family while sitting back in his beach chair and watching the waves roll in. Pack a picnic lunch with his favorite foods and a cold beer, and Dad may just say this was his best celebration yet.

* Adventure seeker: If yours is a father who enjoys living on the edge, a Father’s Day activity built around action and adventure should be a winner. Take Dad base jumping, rock climbing, scuba diving, or race car driving. Any of these activities is bound to get Dad’s adrenaline pumping.

* R&R: Dad’s idea of the perfect Father’s Day may be an afternoon free of obligations and deadlines. A relaxing day in the yard swimming laps in the pool or hitting a few grounders to your waiting baseball mitt may be all the excitement he needs. Toss a few steaks on the grill to give Father’s Day a truly perfect ending.

* Impromptu party: Some dads like to be the center of attention. A Father’s Day party thrown in his honor, complete with friends and family, can be an entertaining way to spend the day. If you are worried about interrupting others’ Father’s Day plans, host the gathering on the Saturday before Father’s Day and let Dad be the life of the party. Finger foods, barbecue, a limited list of cocktails and other beverages and some background music are all that you need to host a festive function. Plan a Father’s Day celebration with your dad in mind. Cater to his favorite activities and opt for entertainment that he will enjoy.

According to the 2013-14 PayScale Salary Survey, which examines salary data for full-time employees in the United States who possess only bachelor’s degrees but no higher degree, petroleum engineering is the most lucrative major with regard to salary potential. Petroleum engineers earned an average annual starting salary of $103,000, and those salaries ballooned to $160,000 by mid-career, when typical graduates in the study had 15 years of experience in their fields. Though engineering majors dominated the survey’s top 10, second place on the list went to actuarial mathematics majors, whose average starting salaries of $58,700 were more modest than those of petroleum engineers. However, by mid-career actual mathematics majors closed much of that gap, with average salaries hovering at $120,000.

TIPS TO LAND A GOOD INTERNSHIP

CELEBRATE DAD AND SOME HISTORY THIS FATHER’S DAY Father’s Day has been celebrated in one form or another since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Perhaps the most driving force behind Father’s Day was Senora Dodd, who thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Dodd wanted to honor the sacrifices that fathers make. Father’s Day was not formally considered a holiday until 1972, when a Congressional Act officially designated the third Sunday in June Father’s Day.

notable events that have occurred on June 15 through the years. Here are just some of the many historical events that took place on June 15.

Families celebrate Father’s Day in many ways. This year Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 15. Dads who are history buffs may want to celebrate this year’s holiday by reminiscing about the

Many college students recognize the value of internships. Internships can help college students start building their resumes before they even earn their degrees, and those experiences can give them an edge in a competitive postgraduate job market. Landing internships gives students some firsthand experience within a given profession, and that exposure can help them decide if a projected career path is right for them or if it’s good to go back to the drawing board. The following are a few tips to help college students land an internship and make the most of the opportunity. * Don’t hesitate. Though many internships are tailored to students with a year or two of college under their belt, that doesn’t mean freshman can’t begin to explore potential opportunities. Even if you don’t intend to get an internship in the coming school year or during summer break, you can begin to explore potential opportunities that might interest you when the time to start seeking internships does arrive. Looking early may yield valuable information, such as courses that would improve your chances of landing an internship, that your fellow students who hesitate or procrastinate won’t have. * Speak with the career placement specialists at your school. Career placement

departments at colleges and universities are an increasingly valuable resource for today’s college students, many of whom will graduate and face an uncertain and crowded job market. But career placement departments are not just a resource for grads. Such departments can be valuable tools for current students interested in landing internships. If you don’t know where to begin your internship search or simply want to see if any opportunities have opened up, speak with representatives at the career placement department at your school. Look the part on such visits, dressing nicely and bringing a resume. Doing so might just separate you from your fellow students, and that can only help as you begin your search for an internship.

so don’t be afraid to ask your friends and family members if they’re aware of any opportunities. Adult relatives might be aware of internship opportunities at their companies before the general public, and there’s no shame in seeking help as you try to take the first step toward a rewarding career. In addition to friends and family members, inquire about your college or university’s alumni network. Many alumni look to hire students from their universities for internships or even entry-level positions, so make the most of this potentially valuable resource.

* Ask around among friends and family members. Sometimes you need a little help to land a good internship,

CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518688-3010 ext 102, or email Avon@scherffinsurance.com.

Each year, Father’s Day weekend offers area residents and visitors a chance to enjoy two very different events which provide unique family fun for children of all ages. On Friday, June 13, the Mechanicville Duck Derby pits floating rubber ducks against the currents of the Anthony Kill, as a crowd of attendees watches the proceedings and hopes that their duck will be the first one to reach the finish Pete Bardunias, line (or the last, which also wins a prize). The Derby is designed to be a low-cost, community event which President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County allows the largest number of people to participate. That evening, a fireworks display by Alonzo Fireworks will light up the night sky, in celebration of the heritage and spirit of the city and its residents. The Mechanicville-Stillwater Area Chamber of Commerce and its team of dedicated volunteers coordinates the event on behalf of the city. A couple of days later, Sunday (Father’s Day) June 15, a very different event featuring real animals will take place a few miles north at Welcome Stock Farm in Northumberland. Sundae on the Farm was conceived 19 years ago to give local residents a chance to see where their food comes from, and to meet the farmers who toil in fields, barns and so-called “milking parlors” to supply food products to local store shelves. Sundae on the Farm features Stewart’s ice cream sundaes (hence the name), flavored milks and pie a la mode, plus hot dogs and hamburgers for hungry guests. Tours of the farm are conducted, as well as a farmers market, food demos by local chefs, horse drawn wagon rides, live music, kids’ activities, a spelling bee, and much more. So if Dad wants to see something very unique this Father’s Day, a visit to Sundae on the Farm will fill the bill. Visit www.saratogafarms.com for more information. Hope to see you there!

SHARE THE BEAUTY OF YOUR COMMUNITY WITH A FRESH AIR CHILD THIS SUMMER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - This summer, share the beauty of your community with a Fresh Air child while enjoying the pure joys of summer in your own backyard! Thousands of volunteer host families in rural, suburban, and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada open their hearts and homes to New York City children from low-income communities through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family program. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Host families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City. Fresh Air children experience simple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, swimming in a cool lake, and gazing at star-filled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on how you can make summer special for a Fresh Air child, contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund at www.freshair.org.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. DID YOU KNOW?

The automotive industry has long been a male-dominated industry. Things could begin to shift after the actions taken by one major automaker. In late 2013, Mary Barra was named the chief executive officer for General Motors. Barra, who has worked for GM in various capacities for the past 33 years, becomes the first woman ever to lead a major automaker. Barra began working at GM in the Pontiac Motor Division when she was 18 as a means to pay for college tuition. Most recently she was the executive vice president of global product development, purchasing and supply chain for GM. According to GM, Barra was picked for her wealth of knowledge and managerial skills, not for political correctness.

ODOMETER FRAUD CHEATS BUYERS Purchasing a used vehicle carries some risks. A used car buyer may not know the complete history of the vehicle or if any shortcuts were taken regarding its maintenance. One increasingly common problem preowned vehicle buyers are running into is odometer fraud. Consumers are estimated to lose billions of dollars due to odometer fraud, according to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Odometer tampering is a serious crime that can fool buyers into believing a vehicle has far fewer miles on it than it really does. Sellers are able to fraudulently market cars and trucks at higher prices based on lower odometer readings. People also may able to circumvent mileage quotas on leased vehicles by turning back the odometer. The U.S. Office of Odometer Fraud Investigations has seen an escalation in this type of illegal activity. Increased demand for low-mileage used cars has made odometer tampering more profitable. The Consumer Federation of America estimates one in 10 cars have had their odometer rolled back.

According to CARFAX(R) Vehicle History Reports, “clocking” or “spinning” an odometer is relatively easy to do. While older cars had to have the odometer dial turned back by machine or manually, today’s digital dashboards enable crooks to reprogram digital odometers using inexpensive software. Many consumers do not learn of odometer fraud until it is too late. Digital odometer fraud is difficult to detect because there are no moveable parts that can appear manipulated. Much like a hacked computer is often discovered too late, so, too, is a tampered odometer. However, there are some steps consumers can take to protect themselves from odometer fraud. * Compare the mileage on the odometer to the mileage listed on maintenance or inspection records. Check oil-change stickers on windows as well. * Look for inconsistent wear and tear on the vehicle compared to the miles on the odometer. An older car will have wear on the gas, break and clutch pedals. A vehicle with fewer than 20,000 miles should have its original tires. * Check the mileage listed on the title with the odometer. If

reading according to the VIN number.

“ * If the guage on a mechanical odometer is crooked or mis-a M aligned, this may indicate tampering. A Odometer tampering is illegal. If the vehicle was sold witha an altered odometer, the dealer or private seller could be li-m able. If others are responsible, it is the sellers’ responsibility to locate them. Unfortunately, rollbacks are usually done byT a third party, removed enough from the seller as not to in-m

criminate the person. This frequently makes prosecution dif-• ficult. It is up to the buyer to take proactive steps to avoidt odometer fraud. b t w

(StatePoint) Buying or leasing a vehicle is an exciting decision. For many consumers, it’s the first “big ticket” item they acquire. Knowing what to expect before making this important financial commitment will help you feel confident about your decision for years to come.

“To make wise decisions, it pays to understand the tools available to educate yourself on financing a vehicle,” says Mike Kane, vice president of Consumer Credit Operations at Ally Financial. “The internet has made it easy for shoppers to access these tools, which can help you get the most for your -money during the financing process.” To help, Kane is offering some auto finance tips to help you make sense of the process. • Ways to Pay. There are a few different options when it comes to paying for a vehicle: paying cash, getting a loan from a bank or credit union, or negotiating a retail contract or lease through a dealership. It’s important to choose the option that works best for you.  Visiting different dealerships is a way to learn more about the options available. • What to look for. When financing the purchase of vehicle , the total amount you pay during the term of the retail con-

tract will depend on several factors including the price of the vehicle, the amount you finance and the Annual Percentage Rate (APR).   • The length of your retail contract matters. Retail contract terms typically range from two to six years, or longer. The longer you take to pay, the lower your payments will be, but your total cost to finance will increase. The length of your retail contract may also impact your options to trade in your vehicle, should you have an outstanding balance. Choose the terms that best fit your financial situation. • Negotiation may be part of the transaction. The terms of the financing -- such as the APR, vehicle selling price, down payment, monthly payment amount and the term -- may be negotiable with the dealership. Ask about any incentives the dealership offers, such as cash rebates or low APRs. • Do your homework. Using free online tools like payment calculators or vehicle valuation guides will give you the information you need when it comes to negotiating with the dealer. • Stick with your budget. There are ways to stay within your

518-399-6675

budget after all the negotiations are over as well. For example, once you have your vehicle, you’ll need insurance. To get a lower premium, consider increasing your insurance deductible, should it fit your financial situation.

Remember, there is no one “right” way to finance a vehicle; only a series of choices you can make to get the most for your money. If you’re planning to finance or lease a vehicle in the near future, improve your financial knowledge to better understand the process.

Chloe

Domestic Long Hair Mix, 6 Year Old Female, White/Orange

Why hello there, my name is Chloe. I’m a lovely lady with beautiful markings and colors of a creamsicle. I’m 6 years young, and still full of love and life. My family had to bring me back to the shelter because they had a medical issue, so I’m on the search again for my new furrever home. I love attention, and am an expert head rubber once you start feeding me pets and loving. I will roll right onto my back for some good loving! As you can see, my hair is quiet long, so getting brushed often would help me from having to groom so much! Being beautiful takes a lot of work. Come on over and meet me today!
