The Capital District’s Best Kept Secret: Opera Saratoga by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

Opera Saratoga delights audiences every summer with beautiful music and dazzling sets. An internationally recognized opera festival, Opera Saratoga has been delighting audiences since July 5, 1962 when it first performed at the Diamond Point Theater in Lake George as the Lake George Opera. Larry Edelson, the artistic and general director of Opera Saratoga since July 2014, hopes Capital District residents know there is world class opera in their backyard. “Opera Saratoga is a real treasure,” he says. Opera Saratoga kicks off its summer festival opera performances on June 29, 2018 at the intimate Spa Little Theater nestled within the Saratoga Spa State Park. Edelson promises that each of the festival’s shows will be exciting for audiences. “Each performance is an up close and personal experience with opera,” he said. This season, each opera is sung in English – the productions will have something for everyone. “The Merry Widow” is one of the most popular operettas in the world. Despite its popularity, Opera Saratoga hasn’t performed it in more than 30 years. The operetta is a beautiful marriage of comedy and dancing. “This is a really fun show and is perfect for families and first time opera-goers,” Edelson said.

Books for Troops Clarification Needed

CAPITAL DISTRICT - In several articles that the Pennysaver has so diligently printed for us concerning the collection of books, there seems to be a huge misunderstanding of donating Hard-Covered books. The article clearly states that THE ONLY BOOKS THAT WE WILL ACCEPT IN HARD-COVER ARE BOOKS DEALING WITH HISTORY BECAUSE WE FIND HISTORY BOOKS ARE OFTEN HARD TO FIND IN SOFT-COVER. While we have received a great number of great history books in both soft and hard-covers, we have also been inundated with hundreds of hard-covered books and best-sellers that are not history and that are readily available in paperback. We don’t want them, the troops don’t want them. If you do donate hard-covered history books, do not donate coffee-table size books. They are a fortune to mail and the troops have limited space. With all other book donations, as in the past, we only accept soft-covered books in excellent condition. Please NO romances at all. We appreciate your generosity, but please consider the considerable extra energy and time these books entail which instead could be spent sending books that the troops want. Please be thoughtful before you donate. Thank you for those who make our jobs so much easier by donating only what we ask for. You are truly offering a gift of “escape. Ellen Keegan, Director.

“Rocking Horse Winner” and “Vinkensport” (The Finch Opera) is advertised as being a double bill. “Rocking Horse Winner” will have its American premiere at the summer festival. It is also Opera Saratoga’s first horseracing themed opera. “Opera Saratoga calls Saratoga home and having an opera with horseracing theme makes perfect sense,” Edelson said. “The opera is all about luck and chance.” The second half of the performance will be the world premiere of “Vinkensport.” According to Edelson, “Vinkesport” combats the elitist connotation of opera, especially for first-time audience members. The opera explores the nature of competition and the need to win through the frame of an obscure Flemish folk sport, Finch-Sitting. “How far will someone go to win a competition? This is a piece that will really resonate with audiences,” he said. “It will also entertain them!” Almost 70 years ago, “The Consul” premiered on Broadway to rave reviews and won both the Pulitzer Prize and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award. It is a riveting opera that still delivers a punch as powerful and timely as its subject matter: the struggle for freedom against oppression, and the maddening nature of unrelenting bureaucracy. “It is a very topical performance that speak to our humanity,” Edelson said. “It shines light on the people who are suffering, including immigrants and refugees, and their challenges.” Edelson believes audiences will be moved by this opera not only because of its beautiful music but because the story is so haunting. In addition to the opera productions, Opera Saratoga also offers a robust local concert series during the Summer Festival. “It is important for us to be connected to the community we serve,” Edelson said. The Stars of Tomorrow, hosted by Skidmore College on May 26 at 7:30 p.m., is a free show kicking off the summer season. The concert will feature 24 singers from around the country who have been selected from almost 1,000 applicants to be members of Opera Saratoga’s prestigious Young Artist Program.  Presented in partnership with the Mansion Inn in Rock City Falls, on June 10 Opera Saratoga will celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s centennial birthday in two concerts, at 2pm and 7:30pm. Members of Opera Saratoga’s Young Artist Program will celebrate the legacy of one of America’s most beloved composers, who brought us masterpieces including “West Side Story,” “Candide,” and “Wonderful Town.” General admission is $60 per ticket. Seating is cabaret style tables, and is strictly limited for these two concerts. Tapas and drinks, inspired by Leonard Bernstein’s theatrical works and specially concocted by The Mansion Inn’s Cordon Bleu trained Executive Chef Rick Bieber, will be available for purchase.  On June 17 at 7 p.m., join Opera Saratoga at the Massry Center for the Arts at College of St. Rose in Albany for a free concert titled Refugee Voices. Building on themes explored in this summer’s production of “The Consul,” Opera Saratoga presents a special concert featuring music by refugee composers - artists who had to flee from their home countries due to religious or political persecution. Opera and song by Gaetano Donizetti, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Darius Milhaud, Paul Hindemith, Erich Koorngold, Irving Berlin, Béla Bartók, and Kurt Weill will be highlighted during this free event. The finale of the summer concert series, Vienna, City of My Dreams, happens on July 12 at 7:30 p.m. at The Spa Little Theater. Tickets range from $40 to $80 as members of Opera Saratoga’s acclaimed Young Artist Program will be featured in this evening of Viennese operetta favorites, including arias and ensembles by Oscar Strauss, Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán, Franz von Suppé, Leo Fall and more. Edelson hopes Capital District residents will give opera a try, and experience one of the many Opera Saratoga events happening this summer. “There are as many different kinds of opera as there are movies – and we have something for everyone this summer,” Edelson said. He encourages newcomers to opera to choose the show with the story that sounds the most interesting to them. “Operas are really just stories told through song – great stories told through music, theater, dance and the wonderful visuals. It’s all encompassing! We have performers coming to Saratoga from around the world. The result is magical - and everyone can find a story in opera that will appeal to them!” For more information about the upcoming Opera Saratoga events please visit its website: http://www.operasaratoga.org/ Emily Marcason-Tolmie, a Saratoga native, is a writer, researcher, wife and mother. Emily and her husband, Ryan, are the parents to two wonderful little boys, ages 4 and 1.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week

The DDR 3

These 3 were an unwanted litter of 9 week old Boxer mix puppies in Alabama who were brought to a high kill shelter once they could be taken from their Mother. Our rescue coordinator saw them at the shelter and knew she had to save them! She soon was able to place them in a foster home that took very good care of them and got them all prepared to head up North so that they could be adopted! They are certainly friendly, well socialized puppies that can’t wait to get a home!

Christian

Meet Christian!! He’s approximately 13 weeks old and he is in foster care with a family we have taken several dogs from! They do a great job in giving them much TLC and having them ready for transport! He is VERY very sweet, a Hound/Lab mix who is around 16 pounds! Christian is good with other animals, kids, and more, and he’s ready to be in his furever home! Can that be you??

Nori & Neva

These white, 11 week old Pittie mix sisters are absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Unfortunately in the South if Pitbull puppies enter a high kill shelter, they are often put at the top of the list to be euthanized since Pitbulls are considered a “dangerous breed” due to all of the dogfighting that occurs in the South. We know the truth, that Pitties are the most loving gentle giants! They are incredibly sweet and we can’t wait for them to find a furever home

According to a survey from AutoList.com, when buying vehicles, millennials are more likely to consider the environmental impacts of a car than those who belong to Generation X. The survey found Gen Xers prioritize price, reliability and brand when purchasing a car. While millennials may place significant emphasis on vehicles’ environmental impact, they do not intend to keep their vehicles for very long, as nearly half of millennial survey respondents acknowledged they plan to keep their cars for five years or less. Meanwhile, among the survey respondents who belonged to Generation X, one-third planned to their cars for 10 years or longer. The AutoList survey also found differences between the cars millennials prefer compared to their Generation X counterparts. Perhaps not surprisingly, millennials, many of whom are just beginning their professional lives, prefer small, inexpensive vehicles, while members of Generation X, who are no doubt more established professionally and more financially secure as a result, prefer slightly more expensive vehicles. But the differences may not be that significant, as the survey found that millennials like the Honda Civic, while Generation X members prefer the Honda Accord.

Tips For A Successful Driving Vacation

• Plan food and accommodations. Some people like to plan road trips as they go. Those who prefer to have greater control can decide where to stop in advance, researching hotels, attractions and dining establishments. • Be firm with departure times. Make a plan to leave at a particular hour and stick to it. This will help to keep the trip on schedule. • Share the driving. Know your driving limits and share driving duties with someone else who can take over if or when fatigue sets in. • Pack stuff for kids to do. Prevent or delay the “are we there yets” with movies, puzzles, books, and music for children. Pack headphones so their devices will not disturb others. • Schedule a tuneup beforehand. Before departing, ensure your vehicle is in good working order to reduce the likelihood of a breakdown. Make sure you have a spare tire and tire-changing tools, just in case. • Don’t pack too much. Leave some room in the vehicle for souvenirs picked up along the way. Take advantage of hotel laundry facilities to keep clothes fresh and to avoid having to pack too many outfits. • Adjust as you go. Even the best plans need to be modified on occasion. Keep an open mind and be flexible so you can enjoy any unexpected wonders that may pop up. Flexibility also can help you adapt to traffic or detours.

Toyota has long dominated the North American automotive market. With more than 40 million sold across the globe, the Toyota Corolla, introduced in 1966, has been dubbed the best-selling car of all time, according to Autoblog. By 1974, the Corolla became the best-selling car in the world. Car and Driver says that other Toyota models, including the RAV4 and Camry, also are consumer favorites.

Cars and trucks can benefit greatly from clean air filters. Many drivers are aware of the need to change the oil in their vehicles according to the intervals designated in their owners’ manuals, but few may be aware of the many benefits of changing air filters. One such benefit pertains to fuel efficiency. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals for air filter replacement guidelines, but manufacturers generally advise drivers change their air filters every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. Complete These Home Improvements Over The Weekend

Home improvement projects ramp up when the weather warms up, as homeowners channel the rejuvenating feelings of spring and tackle their home to-do lists. Large-scale renovations can greatly affect a home, but smaller projects can yield impressive results and be completed over the course of a single weekend. If time is of the essence, these weekend or one-day projects may satisfy homeowners’ desires to fix up their homes. • Create an accent wall. Painting a focal wall in a home can create a serious impact. The bonus is it will not take as long or require as many materials as painting an entire room. Accent walls frequently feature a bold color, so decide on placement and tackle this project in less than a day. • Install stair runners. Dress up hardwood stairs with decorative carpet runners. Runners come in elongated pieces of carpeting or individual pieces that can be placed on each step. If carpeting doesn’t fit with the home’s design, painting individual stair treads also can create visual appeal. • Dress up the entryway. An entryway is a guest’s first impression of a home. Inside, consider laying a new floor. Resilient vinyl tiles come in many different patterns and can mimic the look of wood, travertine or marble. Installing a floor can take a day or two. • Install a new faucet. Instantly improve a kitchen or a bathroom with new fixtures. New faucets can provide aesthetic appeal and low-flow faucets can help conserve water. • Create a gallery on the staircase. BURNT HILLS HARDWARE How Humidity Can Make Homes More Comfortable

Central heating and cooling systems have revolutionized the way homeowners make their homes comfortable. But many people find that heating and cooling systems have a tendency to make areas in their homes more dry than they would be if the windows were open. Without adequate indoor humidity, static electricity proliferates, and living environments may not be as pleasant as they could be. According to Lennox, makers of heating and cooling components, dry air can compromise peoples’ respiratory systems. When membranes in the nose and throat dry out, they cannot capture dirt, viruses and bacteria, potentially resulting in illness. Dry air can cause itchy, flaky skin as well as irritation in the nose, leading to nosebleeds. Dry air in a home also can affect the structure of a home. Dry air will pull moisture from wherever it can be sourced, including wood structures in a home. This may cause walls and door jambs to shift and floors to creak. Even wood furniture can bend and crack if indoor conditions are especially dry. Homeowners can remedy dry air in various ways. Some

predetermined volume of water and mist it into the air when the unit is on.

Central humidifiers work with the home’s HVAC system. They are hard-wired and plugged into the system. Water vapor is introduced into the air that will be forced through vents throughout the house. These systems work on the whole house at once, making them quite efficient.

Do-it-yourself remedies are simply ways to put moisture in the air. One of the easiest steps is to put bowls filled with water in front of or on heating registers or radiant heating units in the house. The water will evaporate slowly into the home. Another and similar tactic is to boil a large tea kettle or pot of water to distribute moisture throughout a space. When showering, leave the door to the bathroom open to distribute steam throughout the house. For those who use the tub, allow the water to cool off and evaporate before pulling the drain. Humidifiers Humidifiers come as wholehouse central units or portable devices. Portable units can be moved from room to room depending on where moisture is needed the most. These humidifiers hold a

Many experts advise homeowners to keep their indoor home humidity between 40 and 60 percent for ultimate comfort. Investing in a hygrometer to measure relative humidity will help homeowners keep humidity at a level that produces a pleasant and comfortable environment.

Prepare HVAC Systems For Warmer Days Ahead

The arrival of a new season can be an exciting time. Homeowners may have renewed vigor to start home renovation projects or even tackle some cleaning and organization tasks. Before the weather starts to warm up too much, homeowners may want to evaluate their home cooling needs and ensure that all equipment is in good working order. Spring air conditioning inspections and tuneups are essential steps in system performance. Homeowners should not take for granted that a system that performed optimally last year will do so this year when temperatures climb. Various factors, including weather damage, dust and grime, mechanical wear and tear, and even rodent or insect infestations, can compromise HVAC systems. Since HVAC systems have so many moving parts, a thorough inspection of

such systems can save headaches and money down the road. According to Heating Ontario, the extreme weather conditions that come along with fall and winter can be especially taxing on homes and the systems that keep them comfortable. During a spring visit, an HVAC technician will perform maintenance on the air conditioner and make sure it is ready for the heat of summertime. This maintenance may include cleaning the unit, checking controls, calibrating the thermostat, lubricating moving parts, checking refrigerant levels, tightening electrical connections, and clearing any clogs. Homeowners are urged to also change the filter at the start of the cooling season. Correcting any issues in the HVAC system well in advance of the arrival of warm weather can help ensure comfort when air conditioning is needed. As an added advantage, homeowners should install programmable thermostats if they do not already have them to keep cooling as cost- and energy-efficient as possible

All family members should be considered when home improvements are being planned, especially the youngest household residents who may not be responsible enough to avoid accidents and injuries. According to a recent Vital Signs report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accidental injuries are a leading cause of death among the country’s youth — with one fatality occurring every hour from something entirely preventable. The CDC notes that the leading causes of child injury include suffocation, drowning, poisoning, fires, and falls. More can be done to keep children safe, and many strategies start at home.

Building A Hydroponic Garden

Hydroponic gardening can change people’s perceptions of what’s needed to grow vibrant plants. Rather than soil, all you may need for a hydroponic garden is water to grow a variety of healthy, strong plants. Although it seems like a futuristic concept, hydroponics — or growing plants without soil — actually dates back many centuries. The hanging Gardens of Babylon and The Floating Gardens of China are two of the earliest examples of hydroponics. According to Fullbloom Hydroponics, hydroponic gardening is a method of growing plants in a water-based, nutrient-rich solution. Instead of soil, roots are supported by an inert material, such as pellets, perlite, or vermiculite. Some people use coconut fiber, sand or gravel as well. The key is that the substance not supply any additional nutrition to the plant. In some instances, the roots grow in water alone. Hydroponics works so well because the person doing the gardening can directly control the nutrients, oxygen and light according to what the plant needs. A nutrition-based water delivery system delivers food to the roots in a highly soluble form, rather than the roots having to search through the soil and extract the same nutrients. Absorbing food with very little effort means the plant can divert its energy to growing and flower production.

518-783-1963 Email info@inspect4.com www.inspect4.com Scientists say that there can be drastic differences in growth rates and yield from hydroponic and soil plants. The group Greentrees Hydroponics says the growth rate for a hydroponic plant can be 30 to 50 percent faster than a soil plant grown under the same conditions. Environmentalists tout that hydroponic gardening is also beneficial to the environment because the plants require considerably less water than those produced with soil gardening and require fewer pesticides or other amendments to thrive. Hobbyists looking to dabble in hydroponics can find many different hydroponic systems on the market today, in an array of prices and sizes. Wicking, ebb and flow, aeroponics, nutrient film, and deepwater culture are different hydroponic systems, each with their own advantages. Once gardeners get the knack of hydroponics, they may not want to turn back to traditional soil gardening again.

This method of no-soil growth can be used just about anywhere. Although it has not yet edged out traditional farming methods, hydroponics is gaining popularity among entrepreneurs and hobbyists. An added attraction to hydroponics is its efficiency. The gardening resource Maximum Yield says hydroponics is ideal where traditional farming is not an option, such as in large cities where there is little to no access to agriculturally amenable land. Hydroponics can even be merged with vertical farming methods, helping to save space and increase output. Hydroponic gardens can be placed anywhere there is access to water and natural or simulated sunlight. Empty warehouses, rooftops, old shipping containers, and much more can be turned into hydroponic garden locations with minimal effort.

Minimize Dust While Renovating

Even though dust is ever-present both inside and outside of a home, when renovations are in full swing, dusty conditions are often exacerbated. Whether a home is new or old, numerous substances can be stirred up when removing walls, refinishing floors, removing tile, or expanding living spaces. These include silica from drywall, lead, asbestos, paint particles, and even waste from bugs or rodents.

• Designate an entrance and exit. The experts at This Old House say it is best to choose one doorway as the only means in and out of a work area. Ideally, this doorway should lead to the outdoors. All other doorways should be sealed on both sides. • Remove extraneous items. It’s best to remove clutter from the room, including any furniture that can be taken out of the space. This helps items from becoming dirty and hazardous particles from settling into nooks and crannies. • Close vents and registers. If forced air systems are part of the home, it’s best to divert air away from the work area. Block vents and intake registers so that dust does not clog the system or transfer to other rooms. • Cut items outside. Design advice site Houzz says that some power tools have vacuum extractors to suck up dust at the point of contact, removing 90 percent of dust where it is generated. For those who do not have access to these tools, cutting and sanding can be done outdoors to keep dust outside.

Homeowners who want to remodel with minimal construction debris floating through the air — both for health purposes and general cleanliness — may find these proactive steps helpful. • Prepare dust-containment plans. If a contractor is involved, it is often his or her responsi-

• Open a window. If weather permits, an open window can provide ventilation. Another idea is to create an air vacuum in the work area. Picking a window at the far end of the work area and mounting a window fan blowing outward can suck dust out and away from other areas of the house. • Clean up daily. By keeping on top of dust, including sweeping and vacuuming the work area frequently, dust will not accumulate and migrate elsewhere. Dust is a common side effect of home renovation projects, but it can be minimized.

Choosing Materials For Decking

Warm weather often gives rise to thoughts about spending time in the great outdoors. Decks can expand outdoor living spaces, making them popular home additions. However, when it comes time to map out a deck building plan, individuals may be unsure as to which deck material will meet their needs. Wood and composite decks are among the most popular choices today, and the popularity of aluminum is growing steadily. Wood Wood is a versatile and attractive decking material. According to the wood resource Real Cedar, some people think that wood is too expensive and requires too much maintenance. In fact, domestic softwoods can be very cost-effective decking options. According to Remodeling Magazine’s “Cost vs. Value” report, wood decks retain considerable resale value. In terms of maintenance, choosing a rot-resistant wood can result in less maintenance. Durable woods include cedar and redwood. Popular Mechanics says both species contain tannins and oils that make them naturally resistant to decay, rot and voracious insects. Periodic cleaning and inspection/repairs will be needed, but wood can be much more durable than people may think. Composite Composite decking and its close cousin, plastic lumber, are some of the fastest-growing decking materials on the market. Many products are made from polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. Some composites will be comprised of recycled plastic and wood fibers to create a weather- and stain-resistant material that doesn’t warp, rot or splinter. Composite manufac-

info@hoffmanstampedconcrete.com turers continually experiment with manufacturing processes to duplicate the look of natural wood grain. Homeowners are often drawn to composite decking because such decks require little maintenance. These decks do not need to be sanded, stained or refinished. However, mold and mildew can grow in shady, damp areas, so homeowners must realize that these products are not completely maintenance-free. Aluminum Although aluminum decks are not seen that often, there are reasons why this decking material is becoming more popular. According to LockDry®, a manufacturer of aluminum decking materials, power-coated aluminum does not need to be replaced due to rotting, cracking or warped boards. Most planks have interlocking edges that create gap-free, watertight decks. Aluminum also has the advantage of being a very strong but lightweight material. Some people may think that aluminum decks would be hot underfoot, but the material actually stays cooler in the sun because of its heat-dissipation properties. For those who have green goals in mind, aluminum is totally recyclable. Various decking materials can meet the look, price point and maintenance level homeowners desire.

Step 3 - All ready to get covered.

Step 4 - Cardboard first to cover the weeds.

Step 5 - Add the mulch.

Step 6 - Enjoy a weed free bed.

Over the years I’ve shared my method of using cardboard under mulch for weed control. Every year people will come up and thank me for saving them so much time once they tried it. Here it is, easy edging and mulching; a quick way to conquer weeds for great looking beds. I have an area that is difficult to mow around so I decided to turn it into a mulched bed to make mowing easier. I used the hose to outline the edge I want. It will be a nice rounded bed that will be easy to mow around. Then I finish edging the new bed. I use a straight bladed shovel for a nice neat edge. Simply slice into the grass at the edge of the bed at a steep angle 4” deep. Grass can’t cross that barrier of air so it won’t make it into the bed on the other side of the trench. I just toss the clumps I dig out into the bed...why waste good soil I say. “But what about all the grass and weeds in the bed...and all the clumps of grass you tossed in?” you’re asking. I suppose that I could spend a couple of hours digging out all the grass and weeds, but I have a much quicker and easier way to deal with that...cardboard! A layer of cardboard will smother the grass and it will die. All the clumps of sod that I tossed in will compost into the soil. I’m always on the prowl for large pieces of cardboard. Here’s the bed all covered with cardboard. I used a razor knife to slice the cardboard along the edge of the bed. Make sure that the cardboard overlaps heavily so the grass and weeds can’t get through...8” of overlap will stop them. I also used the razor knife to cut the cardboard so it fits around the trunks of the pines and hydrangea. Now all that’s left is putting mulch on the cardboard. This is the fun part, and it goes down quickly. I put a 4” to 5” layer of cedar mulch down. There are many types of mulch, but I like cedar because it’s cheap and smells nice too. Now the mulch is down, the area looks great and mowing will be simple. It looks a little sparse now but more plants can be added to the bed easily. Just brush the mulch aside, cut a hole in the cardboard and plant....easy peasy and it looks so much better now. In all, this took less than an hour, and I used 7 bags of cedar mulch. In the vegetable garden, I use the same method except that I’ll use straw on top of the cardboard instead of cedar mulch. During a wet year like this one, I’ll wait until later in the season to cover the soil to give it a chance to dry out and warm up. Seed beds and other areas can’t get covered and still need to be weeded but at least the aisles remain weed free. By fall earthworms will have eaten most of the cardboard and any that is left can be turned into the soil along with the straw adding organic matter and feeding the soil. Thanks for the read.

How To Choose The Right Window Treatments For Your Home

Plantation shutters? Mini-blinds? Cafe curtains? Formal draperies? Homeowners’ options in regard to window treatments for their homes are extensive, which can make outfitting home interiors challenging for novice decorators. Some people do not pay a lot of attention to window treatments, failing to realize just how great an impact the right window treatments can have on a space. According to the design experts at Hunter Douglas, window treatments are often an afterthought because residents may not consider them necessities. As a result, homeowners may install whatever is on hand or accept window treatments that came with a house or apartment. But ignoring window treatments, especially when they can fulfill certain needs, is a missed design opportunity. One of the first steps to choosing window treatments is determining your end goal. Is privacy your main goal? Are you seeking more natural light in a room? Is there too much light and you need to darken the room? Window treatments can serve multiple functions, and some treatments may make better fits depending on homeowners’ ultimate goals.

Semi-sheer window treatments

Semi-sheer window treatments are often fabric and can help brighten rooms with natural light but offer little privacy. They’re usually appropriate for spaces where people gather, such as living rooms, dens or dining rooms. Semi-sheer curtains may be paired with another complementary window treatment so privacy can be customized as needed. For example, sheer curtains let light into a bedroom, but shades can be drawn at night. Maximum privacy Bedrooms, work spaces or bathrooms can benefit from extra privacy. While some people may think that privacy comes at the cost of light, that’s not always the case. Functional curtain panels can be drawn closed when privacy is desired and then opened to let in light. The thickness of the fabric will also dictate the amount of privacy the panels create.

Tiers are hung on a short rod-pocket panel and usually cover the lower one-third of a window. They’re popular choices to let light in from the top, but obscure views from the bottom portion of the window. Cellular shades are another option that provide privacy but still let light in. Cellular shades come in hard and fabric varieties and their use depends on the room. Many cellular shades are constructed with a honeycomb design, offers the design resource Houzz, so they can insulate as well as decorate windows. Blackout shades/shutters Perfect for rooms where babies nap, shift workers rest during daylight hours or external lights, such as that from a street lamp, need to be blocked out, blackout shades do just what their name implies. A dense fabric lining helps keep light out entirely. Shutters also can block out light but add to the character of the room. They can be painted a bright color to make a statement or match wall colors to blend in seamlessly. When selecting window treatments, shoppers can choose retail options or custom treatments. Many designers recommend custom window treatments because they are measured, manufacturered and installed specifically for homeowners’ windows. However, there are many DIY options available at budget-friendly retailers.

How To Become More Attractive To Auto Lenders

It is common for consumers to spend months researching and saving for new vehicles. But many auto buyers do not put the same amount of effort into finding auto loans. That’s unfortunate, as Consumer Reports notes that those who do not have financing arranged before visiting a dealership may not get the best loan terms. Prior to buying a vehicle, drivers should give consideration to how they appear in the eyes of creditors. Few if any people pay for cars or trucks in full at the time of purchase. As a result, it’s key for buyers to make themselves as attractive as possible in lenders’ eyes. Improving credit score Lenders use consumers’ credit scores to determine how likely they will be to honor the terms of a potential loan. Consumers’ FICO® scores are the type of credit score most often used to make lending decisions. FICO scores range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the lower the risk to lenders. However, lenders do not necessarily use the same formula to assess risk.

The first step potential borrowers should take is figuring out what their credit score is, and what information is on their credit report. For those who haven’t done so already, they can request a free copy of their credit reports from the three major credit monitoring bureaus. Once credit reports are obtained, consumers can work to correct any mistakes or inconsistencies. Some of these may be simple fixes, while others may take some effort. A 2012 study from the Federal Trade Commission found that one in five consumers had an error on at least one of their credit reports. Consumers also can improve their credit scores by doing the following: • Make payments on time, as payment history can have the greatest effect on a bad credit score, according to Credit.

com. • Reduce debt by paying off balances on credit cards or other loans. • Obtain a mix of different credit sources, such as those in the form of credit cards, furniture financing, home ownership, and auto loans. This, too, can raise credit scores and make borrowers appear less risky. • Keep old credit accounts open, as they establish a strong credit history. Try not to open too many new accounts in a short period of time. Shopping loans Those with strong credit have more wiggle room in terms of loan negotiation. A person with a high FICO score may be eligible for better terms, including a low interest rate.

Consumers should consider the length of the loan and how much they can afford before signing any paperwork. Lengthy loans will cost buyers much more in the long run when factoring in interest payments. Still, Edmunds reports that, over the last 10 years, the length of the average car loan has risen above 68 months. Financial experts advise that buyers avoid relying on lengthier loans simply to buy more car than they can afford. Consider large lenders when shopping for auto loans. Such lenders may have better rates than going through dealerships directly. Other lenders include credit unions, local banks and finance companies. Borrowers with strong credit will be attractive to lenders and will have more loan options at their disposal.
