Plywood And Mdf: What's The Difference? For decades plywood was the go-to inexpensive wood of choice for many home-repair projects. In fact, it was actually the first manufactured wood product available. Then the term MDF, or medium-density fiberboard, started making its way onto home-improvement shows and among do-it-yourselfers, making it a popular material in recent years. Still, many people do not know the differences between these types of wood products. Plywood is constructed by gluing several layers of thin wood veneers between two pieces of wood to create a solid sheet. Experts say there is an odd number of veneer layers, and each one is attached at a right angle to the one below to add strength to the plywood. There may be knots or irregularities in the plywood because it is made of actual slices of wood. It comes in a variety of strengths, depending on the thickness of the plywood. Thickness can vary by sheet depending on the manufacturer, so each sheet may not be consistent. MDF is formed with wood fibers or shavings mixed with glue or resin. Under heat or pressure, the MDF is made into a solid material. Because MDF is not made from slices of wood to form

veneers, it will not have the traditional graining or knots associated with wood. This can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on how it is ultimately used. MDF is often easy to cut, drill and manipulate because users will not have to work around grain or knots. But users should be careful to drill pilot holes before attaching MDF because it can split. Due to machine creation, MDF is generally uniform in thickness, which makes it consistent for many uses. It is important to note that sanding and cutting of MDF can cause the release of formaldehyde. Safety goggles and a mask are a must when using this product.

Plywood is more readily used for walls, ceilings and subfloors because of its strength. MDF is widely relied on for building cabinets, crafts, shelving and trimwork.

capitaldistrictcontractors.com Things To Consider Before Adding A Greenhouse Many men and women with a passion for gardening hope to one day have a greenhouse they can call their own. Though greenhouses are a great place for gardeners to hone their crafts, they can also be quite expensive, and there are some things gardeners should consider before building a greenhouse. * Size: A greenhouse can be grandiose or small in stature. The size of a greenhouse depends on the gardener and the amount of property available. Larger greenhouses can be breathtaking, but the homeowner in you might not want a greenhouse to dominate your entire property. In addition, if your planting plans are relatively modest, a bigger greenhouse probably doesn't make much sense. * Cost: Greenhouses can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Price should not dictate which greenhouse you buy, so if you want a large one but can only afford a small one, then it might be best to keep saving money until you can afford one that meets your needs.

JT&T PROPERTY SERVICES Treating Your Property Like Our Own Since 2004

* Use: If you plan to use the greenhouse just during the standard gardening seasons, then you won't need to heat it. However, most greenhouse owners want to use the greenhouse year-round, in which case you will need to heat the interior. In addition, those want to keep gardening during the dog days of summer will have to ventilate the greenhouse. Consider the use and the potential cost a year-round greenhouse before making your decision.

* Location: The greenhouse will need to be in a place on the property that gets lots of sun. Before buying or building a greenhouse, choose an area on the property where plants will thrive. If that area is currently used for something else, ask yourself and those who share the home with you if converting that part of the property to a greenhouse is something they can all live with. You don't want the greenhouse to be a burden or negatively impact your family's quality of life.

Did You Know?

Potatoes are enjoyed world-over and make a versatile addition to any meal. Though many consumers purchase their potatoes at the local grocery store, potatoes can be easily grown in the home garden, too. Potatoes prefer a slightly acidic soil and full sun and will produce best in a loose, moisture-retentive soil. It is possible to get good potato yields in less-than-perfect soil, however. Home gardeners can begin planting potatoes in early spring, when the soil is able to be worked. Plants will not begin to grow until the soil temperature is at least 45 F. Plant only certified seed potatoes, which are available at most quality nurseries and garden centers. They are less likely to have disease than a potato you picked up at the supermarket and tried to establish. Small seed potatoes can be planted as-is. Larger seed potatoes should be cut into pieces that contain at least one or two "eyes." Placing the seed potatoes in a warm location can entice them to bud and speed up the sprouting process once planted.

Outdoor entertaining areas have always been popular among homeowners. The ability to entertain friends and family or simply relax by yourself is something homeowners cherish, particularly during the warm weather seasons. Finding the right furniture to match your outdoor area, be it a deck, patio or poolside lounging area, is essential to making the most of this special area of the home. When shopping for outdoor furniture, consider the following. * Weight: Unlike furniture inside the home, outdoor furniture will be moved around quite frequently, such as to protect it from inclement weather or changing seasons. As a result, the weight of the furniture bears importance. While you don't want furniture that's too lightweight and will blow away any time a strong gust of wind comes along, it's a good idea to choose furniture that isn't too heavy. This makes it easier to move should a storm suddenly appear and it won't require the entire household to help move the furniture into and out of the garage when inclement weather arrives.

* Versatility: Many homeowners enjoy changing their home's interior decor from time to time, and it can be just as enjoyable to do the same to a home's exterior decor. That said, look for furniture that can be accented with a variety of accessories, so you can change the look of your outdoor entertaining area easily. * Protection: Protecting exterior furniture from the elements should be a priority. When shopping for outdoor furniture, figure out if protective covering is available or if it will need to be custom made. The latter alternative can be quite expensive, so you might want to consider more generic furniture that comes with standard protective coverings to make it more affordable.

* Comfort: The whole idea behind an outdoor entertaining area is to have a relaxing place to spend time outside. So be sure to choose furniture that's comfortable and can handle the elements. choose a light, neutral color to give the property a fresh, inviting look.

Renovating A Rental Property When the economy struggles to the point of recession, few people benefit. However, there are some businesses that thrive during a recession, using the circumstances to their advantage and actually growing business in spite of a sagging economy. One such business is rental agencies or property management companies. Even landlords with a single investment property tend to do better during a recession, when individuals might be fearful of buying a home or simply unable to afford it. Such individuals still need a place to live, however, and landlords benefit as a result. One of the best things a landlord can do during a recession is to pay more attention to their rental properties, ensuring the properties are in tip-top shape so they can get the most out of each unit at a time when the rental market is most competitive. This might require some renovations, which landlords should be making periodically anyway, regardless of how strong or tenuous the economy might be. * Update the paint. Apartments are typically empty when shown to prospective renters, and any issues with the paint job are very noticeable during such viewings. If the paint is outdated or there is any fading, update the walls Relatively minor renovations to rental with a fresh coat of paint. It's ideal to do so whenever a properties can earn landlords substantial- tenant moves out, but landlords whose buildings have a ly more money over the course of a typical high turnover rate likely won't need to repaint every time lease. a tenant moves out. When adding a new coat of paint,

* Replace the carpeting. Carpeting is another area prospective renters are instantly drawn to when viewing an apartment. New carpeting is always attractive to potential tenants, and landlords won't have to break the bank to replace the carpets when an existing tenant moves out. Instead of expensive carpeting, choose a medium grade carpet with a neutral color, ideally beige or light brown, which can hide spills or stains should the next tenant prove messy and move out after the original lease terms are up. Before laying carpet, don't forget to lay down quality padding underneath. Such padding makes the carpet feel softer and of higher quality.

* Upgrade the appliances. Perhaps nothing evokes a stronger response from prospective renters than a property's appliances. Outdated appliances make renters speculate as to what else might be outdated and if the building is well taken care of. On the other hand, newer appliances, particularly stainless steel items, create a contemporary feel and give the impression, true or false, that a landlord won't allow the building to grow dated or fall into disrepair. When shopping for appliances, choose ones that are more basic so any eventual repairs won't be too complicated or costly. Newer appliances enable landlords to charge more rent for a given property, and many renters would agree that such properties are worth the extra money.

* Install new windows. Older buildings tend to have creaky or drafty windows, which not only makes the property colder during the winter months, but it also drives up utility costs as renters are forced to turn up the thermostat to combat drafts and cold air entering the unit. New windows can eliminate such drafts and reduce utility costs, something landlords can use to their advantage when discussing the property with potential tenants. Landlords might even be able to earn tax breaks when installing new, energy-efficient windows. Discuss if any such breaks exist with the local municipality.

When it comes to renovating a rental property, landlords can make a handful of small renovations that, while relatively inexpensive, enable them to earn substantially more money from each unit over the long haul.

According to Nevin, one of the most important long-term investments a homeowner can make for the overall safety of a family is to replace older windows, using the EPA-approved lead safe renovation guidelines.

Lead Paint Hazards and Older Windows

"Replacing older windows is one of the best ways to reduce lead risks," says Nevin. "Make sure to use only a contractor that is certified in lead-safe work practices and strongly consider the use of ENERGY STAR® qualified windows, like the vinyl replacement windows offered by Simonton Windows®. These windows are a healthy choice for replacing older single-pane units. They're energy-efficient and a good value for the investment."

"At Simonton, we advocate that replacing older windows coated with lead-based paint with vinyl windows is a sensible step for homeowners who want to create a healthier home environment," says Gary Pember with Simonton Windows. "We believe Rick's research substantiates the replacement of all windows coated with lead-based paint as a way to dramatically help reduce lead dust within that home."

(MS) -- If your home was built before 1978 and you still have the original windows, it's time to seriously consider replacing your windows -- especially if you have young children or a pregnant person living at home.

Nevin explains that, according to his research funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), homeowners need to understand there are four key steps to completing a "lead-safe window replacement strategy" for the home.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the routine opening and closing of windows in homes built prior to 1978 can disturb lead-based paint around the windows, causing paint dust and chips to be released into the air. These lead particles are so potentially dangerous that the EPA now requires contractors to be trained and certified before they can perform any renovation, repair or painting projects that may have previously applied lead-based paint.

"First, they advise replacing all single-pane windows with ENERGY STAR qualified windows," says Nevin. "Second, stabilize any significantly deteriorated paint. Third, perform specialized cleaning to remove any lead-contaminated dust. And finally, perform dust wipe tests to confirm the absence of lead dust hazards after the clean up."

"Research indicates that the everyday activity of opening and closing windows creates friction that then allows invisible lead dust to enter the air," says Rick Nevin, a consultant to the National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH). "Young children, who crawl on the floor where the lead dust has settled, can be especially at risk. Toddlers put their hands in their mouths ... and after

Make Your Home Safer For Kids According to the Home Safety Council, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing home injuries, half of the children who die before their first birthday die from choking or suffocation. Many times such tragedies can be averted. Parents of very young children can and should take it upon themselves to safeguard their youngsters from various choking and suffocation hazards around the house. The Home Safety Council offers the following tips to parents hoping to do just that.

* Keep smaller items out of reach. In general, anything that can fit through a tube of toilet paper is big enough to cause a child to choke. This includes hard candies, coins, peanuts, and even latex balloons. Always store these items in closed areas or in places that are beyond a child's reach. * Make the crib a kids-only zone. Pillows, toys and comforters in a crib can cause a child to suffocate. Make the crib off-limits to these types of items, and always put children to bed on their backs.

hazards to young kids. Whenever kids are around water, always stay within arm's length.

* Erect a fence around a pool or spa. Many communities have laws in place that require pools to be fenced in. But those laws often only mandate the yard where the pool is located be fenced in. While that might be sufficient, it can also help to erect a fence around the pool itself and keep a lock on the gate to prevent curious youngsters from making their way to the pool unsupervised.

* Turn buckets and wading pools upside down when not in use. Many parents purchase wading pools so their kids have a fun place to relax on hot days. When the kids aren't living it up, empty these pools and turn them upside down. Do the same with any buckets you have around the house. Whenever possible, store empty buckets outside the reach of children.

* Clip window cords. Window cords, such as those that hang from blinds, can be very dangerous if they make their way into the hands of young children. Clip the loops in these window cords and make sure they are always high up the window where curious kids cannot reach them. * Read all toy labels. Kids have so many toys that parents can easily overlook toys that might be safety hazards. Parents of especially young children might feel a little run down from raising their youngster and unknowingly let a few toys slip past their radar. However, it's imperative parents read all toy labels before handing the toys over to a child. Pay specific attention to the recommended ages for each toy, as those recommendations are often made with child safety in mind. * Keep kids at an arm's length at all times when around water. Another potential threat to kids' safety around the house is water. Children can drown in as little as an inch of water, and it might only take a few minutes to do so. As a result, parents must be mindful and attentive whenever kids are around water. Bathtubs, toilets and, of course, pools present serious safety

Cords that hang from blinds present a serious safety risk to young children if not hung beyond a child's reach.

* Prevent burns. Adults know to be cautious around hot water, but kids often learn the hard way. To prevent burns, keep hot water at or below 120 F.

Save Money On Energy Bills (MS) -- Home is where the heart is, where families grow, and generally where the most of our leisure time is spent. Working with green technology for the best insulation will keep your house warm, welcoming, comfortable and cozy -- and will save you money, all at the same time. Insulation advancements are on the horizon at all times, experts say. Take a look at innovation by Icynene, for example. Their soft, expanding spray foam insulation and air barrier material protects homeowners from the harmful outdoor environment and from energy-robbing air leakage. Icynene pioneered the spray foam technology and now leads in industry training.

Working Within Your Budget!

Why are homeowners turning to spray foam insulation? Experts tell us that older insulation types, such as fibreglass, will settle, compact and sag over time, decreasing their insulation properties. Spray foam insulation is energy efficient, says Icynene, and it has a high R-value due to its ability to seal and insulate at the same time. The spray foam solutions are

created with water blowing agents and renewable and recycled content, which help reduce greenhouse gas emissions to support a healthier environment. Spray foam insulation can be used in new home construction or additions and insulation upgrades to existing homes (attics, crawlspaces) during remodeling projects. With spray foam insulation you can maintain healthy indoor air while reducing your HVAC equipment needs and saving on energy bills. In addition, homeowners can conserve construction materials without the need for excess sealing and still achieve optimal airtightness. Spray foam insulation doesn't pass off gas over time, performs at peak levels for the lifetime of your home, and, because airborne moisture is controlled, the durability of the building remains unthreatened by the growth of mold and mildew. Ergonomic Tools Make Gardening Easier Hand injuries are a common side effect of certain occupations and hobbies. Tennis elbow or wrist and even carpal tunnel syndrome are well-recognized injuries. But ergonomic tools can help alleviate injuries due to repetitive motions. The term ergonomics is derived from the Greek words “ergon,” which means work, and “nomoi,” which means natural laws. In the simplest terms, ergonomics is the study of how work is done and how to make work better. It has led to an entire subset of ergonomicsincluding products that can make work better and are safer for the body. This is done by designing items that increase utility of the item, are more comfortable to use, and reduce injury through frequent use. Ergonomic products are most readily associated with items of the workplace, including ergonomic keyboards, computer mice, office chairs, and lighting. But many industries have reevaluated operations to include tools that are ergonomic in design. Gardening is one area where ergonomics has become especially popular. Choosing the right garden tools can alleviate pain and strain.

However, hand, back and injuries of other areas of the body are also commonplace due to hobbies like gardening. Many people have considered giving up gardening due to the pain that ensues from using the wrong tools. Here are some ergonomic tools to consider for use while gardening.

* Extend a Hand Ergonomic Gardening Tool Set: These garden tools help individuals continue gardening tasks with ease and joint protection. The tools attach to the forearm and feature a right-angled grip to promote strength and leverage. Interchangeable heads turn the tool into a hoe, trowel, cultivator, or pruning saw.

* Radius Garden 102 Weeder Hand Tool: This device alleviates wrist and hand fatigue from gripping and pulling out weeds the traditional way. The weeder features a patented hand grip that provides more leverage with less wrist stress. The aluminum blade helps to cut through weed roots and lift out weeds with minimal effort.

* Garden Works Ergonomic 7 Pattern Sprayer: Instead of squeezing a hand grip to activate the hose nozzle, this sprayer features a sliding thumb valve that controls water flow while reducing hand strain. The seven different water flow patterns allow gardeners to choose from misting to streaming water flows. * Bond LH029 Ergonomic Handle Garden Spade: The handle and length of the tool is designed to create maximum comfort and leverage when digging in soil.

* Miracle Gro® Ergonomic Garden Feeder: This feeder has an ergonomic handle for an easy, stress-free grip. The trigger lock allows for one-handed control and three spray patterns.

Gardening doesn’t have to be painful when you use tools that are specially designed to fit the hand. They help alleviate strain to the wrist and elbow while maximizing leverage.

(518) 788-1414 • (518) 301-5470 Homeowners Embracing Eco-Scaping Eco-friendly or conservative landscaping is growing increasingly popular among homeowners. Often referred to as ecoscaping, conservative landscaping includes removing invasive plants, conserving water and reducing reliance on chemical pesticides. Homeowners looking to landscape in a more ecofriendly way this gardening season can employ the following techniques. * Remove invasive plants. Exotic plants are often invasive, as they have been brought here from different ecosystems and therefore have no natural enemies to keep them under control. Though exotic plants might add significant aesthetic appeal, this may come at the expense of local wildlife and existing plants. Many mistakenly assume all non-native plants are invasive, but that's not always true. Consult a local nursery before removing a foreign plant to determine if it's invasive or non-invasive. If it's non-invasive, it does not need to be removed.

* Choose native plants whenever possible. Native plants have adapted to the local climate and soil, which can offer numerous eco-friendly benefits. Because they're accustomed to native conditions, native plants do not need chemical fertilizers and require less water to thrive than their non-native counterparts, which have not adapted to the climate and soil and, as a result, need help to grow and survive. In addition, native plants won't harm surrounding wildlife or plants.

growing conditions. If placed in poor growing conditions, plants will require chemical supplements to thrive and more water to survive. When planting, do so strategically. Find the appropriate light, moisture and soil conditions for any new plants, and then plant accordingly. Doing so requires less maintenance, saving you money while adding aesthetic appeal to your property. A local nursery can help find the right growing conditions for your plants.

Employing proper watering guidelines is one way homeowners can adopt more eco-friendly landscaping practices.

* Plant strategically. Plants can be very picky when it comes to

* Water properly. Far too often homeowners waste water, particularly when the mercury rises. Overwatering plants leads to excess runoff, which can result in pesticides and fertilizers being

carried to local streams and rivers. Excessive watering can also filter nutrients from the soil. When watering, water early in the morning, which allows plants to conserve water throughout the day. Native plants that have established themselves should not need supplemental watering.

* Reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. Pesticides should be a last resort. In addition to their potentially harmful effects on the local ecosystem, pesticides can be harmful to human health as well. Oftentimes, pesticides exacerbate pest problems, killing the beneficial species like earthworms that don't recover as quickly as their more harmful pest counterparts. Only use pesticides if absolutely necessary. Consult a landscaping or gardening professional and ask about potential alternatives to pesticides.

Pool Water Chemistry Basics Pool water chemistry is something that baffles many homeowners caring for their backyard pools. It is vital to keep an adequate level of certain chemicals to create pristine, safe swimming water. One of the most important tools to have is a pool/spa test kit. Sometimes pool packages will come with a basic test kit that measures for chlorine and pH only. This isn’t really adequate for most people’s needs. Understanding the different facets of pool water chemistry will help illustrate why. There are roughly six factors that come into play with pool water chemistry. 1. Free chlorine (FC): Swimmer protection is provided by a sanitizer, generally a chlorine-based product. Free chlorine residual is the measure of the active, available chlorine sanitizer in the pool that is still able to clean the pool. Without FC, the pool will harbor bacteria and algae and turn swampy.

2. Combined chlorine (CC): When chlorine combines with contaminants in the pool, like ammonia and organic materials, it essentially gets used up and becomes inactive. This is called combined chlorine. This type of chlorine is useless at this point and can contribute to that chlorine smell many people associate with too much chlorine in the pool. Rather, the opposite is the case. There is too much used-up chlorine and not enough FC. If CCis too high, it will be necessary to superchlorinate, or “shock” the pool, to rid the water of CC.

3. Total chlorine (TC): This is the measure of the FCand CC in a pool. In perfect conditions where CC is zero, TC tests can be used in place of FC tests. However, most home pools have occasional issues of algae blooms or other problems, rendering a TC test inadequate for measuring true chlorine levels.

4. Cyanuric Acid (CYA): Cyanuric acid is a product that helps buffer chlorine from the effects of the sun. Essentially you can think of CYAas sunscreen for chlorine. Without CYA, also known as stabilizer, in pool water -- and the right level of it present -- chlorine will burn off very quickly in the water. In full sunlight, it’s possible for chlorine to evaporate as fast as it is put into the pool without CYA.

5. pH: This is the measure of whether the water is acidic or alkaline. Generally for swimming comfort, the pH of the pool should be kept between 7.2 and 7.6. This way there is no erosion of metal parts or discoloration of pool walls from water that is improperly balanced. Other chemicals in the pool also work more in harmony when water pH is right. 6. Total Alkalinity (TA): TA helps buffer the pool water against big swings in pH levels, making the pool water more consistent.

Riding Mowers Can Make Lawn Care More Manageable Homeowners love extensive, lush, green lawns. But the elbow grease that goes into tending to the landscape is far less beloved. One task that routinely causes bouts of procrastination is mowing the lawn. But riding mowers can change the way homeowners view mowing the lawn. Traditionally, mowing the lawn has been a task largely handled by homeowners pushing walk-behind mowers. Whether these mowers were powered by gasoline, electricity or simply human power, they were the type of mower that was generally the most popular and most affordable.

Individuals had different features they could consider in their mowers, including horsepower and the size of the deck. There were also mowers that could bag or mulch. Despite these features, homeowners with a particularly large back or front yard -- or both -- may have found lawn mowing to be tedious work. Those who have yards of almost an acre or more often find riding mowers to be an efficient method of mowing the lawn, and one that also does not require as much effort out in the sun.

A riding mower's cutting deck is in front, while a lawn or gardening tractor's cutting deck is mid-mounted, which is how they differ. Lawn tractors also may be able to accept other landscaping attachments. A riding mower is more maneuverable than a tractor, particularly for landscapes that may have trees or planting beds.

Cost is the one thing that may deter some homeowners from a riding mower. While a walk-behind mower could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars and up, riding mowers generally start at $1,000 and may be as much as $10,000, depending on the extra features, like cruise control and cup holders.

However, some find that what riding mowers lack in afford-

1641 Route 9 • Clifton Park • 383-7368 www.casalerentall.com ability, they make up for in convenience. Plus buying a riding mower may pay for itself in savings on landscaping services over the course of one to two seasons. As with any lawn tool, it's important to note that riding mowers are not toys and they should not be handled by children, nor should children be allowed to ride along while mowing.

Simple Ways To Soundproof A Home

DRIVEWAYS ★ PARKING LOTS & MORE....

Advancements in technology have made it easier than ever before for homeowners to create a mini movie theater in the comfort of their own homes. The affordability of home-theater systems and big-screen televisions, once deemed a luxury only available to the super-wealthy, has made it possible for everyone to enjoy theater-style entertainment at home.

Free Estimates ★ Fully Insured ★ Guaranteed

But one thing that can put a damper on those home-theater plans is external noise. Movie theaters are soundproof so customers can't hear noise from the nearby freeway or their fellow moviegoers "oohing" and "aahing" in the theater next door. Private homes, however, are not so soundproof, so homeowners must take it upon themselves to soundproof their homes to create the ultimate home-theater experience. The following are some of the ways homeowners can do just that.

* Decorate the home with sound-absorbent items. Another way to soundproof a home is to decorate the house with sound-absorbent items. Furnishings with substantial cushioning, carpeting and fabric on the walls will each absorb sound, reducing the transfer of sound from room to room. Upstairs rooms should be carpeted to further reduce the transfer of sound. * Install soundproofing tile on ceilings. Soundproofing tile on ceilings is another effective way to reduce the transference of sound from room to room and keep external noise out of the hometheater room.

* Add some layers of drywall. An extra layer or two of drywall will block sound coming from neighboring rooms. Simply add a layer or two of drywall to the existing wall. * Install double-paned windows. If it's noise from outside the home that's ruining your home theater experience, then consider installing double-paned windows with acrylic frames. Such a job can be costly, so if it's going to be a budget-buster, then sound-deadening drapes are a cheaper alternative that can also be effective.

Fun Facts About Earthworms

There are more than 2,700 different types of earthworms residing on the planet. Earthworms are often known to be workhorses in the garden, helping to aerate and fertilize the soil while filling it with nutrients. Earthworms recycle materials like dead leaves, decaying animals and feces so new plant seedlings can grow and have the process begin anew. Worms have been around for 120 million years -- one of the few species of insects that have stood the test of time. In just one acre of soil, there may be a million or more earthworms turning over the soil and chewing on organic matter. Without earthworms, most plants would not thrive. Earthworms have mucous covering their bodies in order to stay moist. This helps them to breathe through their skin. You may have noticed that after it rains worms appear on sidewalks and outside of their underground burrows. This is not because they are drowning underground, but because the environment is moist after it rains, making it more conducive for worms to breathe and move around to find mates. Normally the dry conditions above ground make them dry out and die. Earthworms can be remarkable creatures to watch. Contrary to popular belief, worms do have a mouth and an opposite end for waste removal that is not interchangeable

Did You Know? Ecoscaping is a growing trend among homeowners who want to take care of their lawns and landscapes but want to do so in a way that's environmentally friendly. Integrating both landscape architecture and spatial planning with environmental science, ecoscaping is meant to help homeowners create a sustainable and eco-friendly landscape design. It's natural to assume that ecoscaping includes looking for ways to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, but there are many additional ways homeowners can embrace ecoscaping. This includes removing or refusing to plant invasive plants that are difficult to control because they are from different ecosystems

and can threaten local wildlife and existing plants. Instead of choosing exotic plants that aren't native to the area, choose native plants that are accustomed to the local climate. Another way to embrace ecoscaping is to develop a planting strategy wherein plants are planted in beneficial growing conditions that can eliminate the need for chemical fertilizers and excessive watering.

Searching for Sergeant Bailey

In his talk, Breig will share how a visit to an antique shop led to uncovering the fascinating history of a true “unknown soldier.” Highlighting history from rural Virginia to wartime in New Guinea, Breig’s talk should be of interest to history buffs, WWII enthusiasts and genealogists alike. He will autograph copies of his book after his talk. All are welcome to this drop-in program; no registration required. Light refreshments are served. Strategies to Increase Voter Turnout CLIFTON PARK – On Monday, April 30, 7pm, at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Library, the League of Women Voters of Saratoga County will present a program entitled, Increasing Voter Participation in New York State. NYS has one of the lowest voter turnout rates in the nation, and this program explores many of the reasons why it has such a low ranking. Reforms that have been enacted in other states to increase turnout will be reviewed, including whether these reforms would be effective if implemented in NYS. Three of the reforms under consideration are the modernization of the voter registration process, early voting, and a better ballot design. Statistics regarding voter participation in Saratoga County will also be presented as to how local participation measures up to the rest of the state. The League will also be recruiting volunteers to help with voter registration prior to the November elections. For more information, contact the League at 728-0237 or visit www.lwvsaratoga.org. (P)

Take Advantage Of Unprecedented Education Opportunities It used to be that people chose from relatively few, straightforward options when planning a career. You went to grade school, then perhaps began an apprenticeship at the family business. If college was an option, Mom and Dad saved up for a four year school and off you went in search of a Bachelors. Sometimes, if the cost was prohibitive, a community college offered an alternative of a more affordable, if less comprehensive Associates Degree.

Pete Bardunias,

President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County

Today the dynamics have changed, allowing many more opportunities, a wider variety of training, and a whole host of ways to keep ever-rising costs in line. Refreshingly, our large employers are trying to help with the effort. Did you know that some of the most desirable jobs available at GLOBALFOUNDRIES today are accessible through a two year degree from TEC-Smart or one of the other participating community colleges? No longer is a community college a place to go when you don’t make the grade for a four year school – instead they often provide just the right amount of training for good local jobs. This isn’t to take away from some of the fantastic four year colleges and universities based in the Capital Region, but so often the perception is that our children have to spend their college years in a location far away in order to receive a marketable education. The fact is that they can obtain the necessary skills to succeed without ever leaving home, so please consider all the options when helping young adults find their chosen path. Of course many of our children want to explore the world and try more distant schools to enjoy the university experience. That’s understandable and they should be free to pursue their dreams. However, it’s worth explaining that employment opportunities after college are often far better right here at home than they are elsewhere at present.
