Mahican, Mohican, Mohegan? 3pm Nobody’s quite sure how to spell their name in English, but this Native American tribe was once a force to be reckoned with in the Hudson Valley. Their nation stretched from Dutchess County northward to Lake Champlain. The Mohawks, famed as the fiercest of warriors, feared them. Who were these First Americans? Where did they go? And why? Steve Trimm, amateur historian and tour guide at Grant Cottage State Historic Site, will answer these questions. Please RSVP for this seminar since seating is limited.

What To Do When A Tire Blows Out While Driving

Many frightening scenarios can unfold while driving. Inclement weather can affect visibility and the safety of roads, while distracted driving can put anyone on the road in harm’s way.

One situation that can suddenly turn a Sunday drive into something scary is a blown out tire. No drivers or vehicles are immune to blown out tires. But savvy drivers who know what to do in such situations can greatly reduce their risk of a blown out tire turning into something far worse. Recognizing a blown out tire The movies might make blown out tires seem as though drivers suddenly find themselves in wholly uncontrollable situations. But blown out tires won’t immediately send cars into the nearest roadside ditch. When a tire blows, the vehicle will immediately slow down and then begin pulling to the right or left, depending on which side of the car suffered the blowout. The automotive retailer Pep Boys notes that, if a front tire blows out, drivers will feel the force in their steering wheels, while a rear tire blowout will be felt more in the seat and/or body of the vehicle. Driving through a blowout Plenty of drivers have safely navigated their way through tire blowouts. When such a situation arises, drivers should avoid slamming on their brakes, instead allowing their vehicles to gradually decelerate, making sure to turn on their emergency flashing lights once they are certain they have control of the vehicle. As the vehicle slows down, pull to the side of the road, calling for help if necessary. When on the side of the road Drivers who do not have a spare tire or cannot change the tire themselves should wait patiently for assistance to arrive after they have called for help. Drivers who can change their tires should place reflective cones or triangles behind their vehicles before they begin working. Such devices warn oncoming drivers of stranded vehicles. If replacing the tire with a donut, remember that such replacement tires are not designed to travel long distances and will need to be replaced shortly after they are put on the vehicle.

PLANTING Sadly, in my line of work, I get to see a lot of dead shrubs and trees that have died within a couple of years after being planted. I always like to look them over to see what went wrong. A pattern has become apparent...most were simply planted too deep. You can still see the dirt on the stem way above the crown of the plant. If the stem or trunk above ground is covered with soil or mulch, it hinders the plant’s ability to pass moisture and nutrients from the root system up through the bark to the branches and leaves above. It may take a year or three but it is usually fatal. Let me walk you through the process of planting a tree or shrub. First, dig the planting hole a little bit wider than the plant’s root ball but only as deep as the root ball or the pot that contains the roots. If you’ve dug the hole too deep, fill it in a bit. Add compost or just the original soil to build up the bottom of the planting hole to insure that the stem isn’t buried too deeply. This is also a good time to add Bio-Tone to the planting hole. Bio-Tone provides gentle organic nutrients for the tree. Perhaps more important, Bio-Tone also adds beneficial soil microbes and Oops! The hole is too deep. several strains of Mycorrizal fungi. The spot on the tree trunk where the soil is in the pot or ball needs to still be visible after planting. Next, place the tree or shrub into the hole and check again to make sure you’re at the proper planting depth. The spot where the trunk of the tree meets the soil of its ball or pot should exactly match the level of the soil around your planting hole. The easiest way to check this is to lay a stick (the handle of your shovel works) across the Adding the soil and Bio-Tone planting hole and make sure that the top of the root ball is starter food level with the ground. This seems trivial, but it can make all the difference to the plant’s health and survival. Once you’ve made sure that the crown of the plant is at the proper level, fill in the rest of the planting hole. This is the point where inexperienced gardeners make another mistake. When you dig a hole, then fill it with a root ball, there’s going to be soil left over. What to do with it? Many will This is the proper planting depth. opt to pile it up around the trunk or stem. DON’T DO IT! It will have the same negative effect as planting too deeply. Use the extra soil to build a dish-shaped dike or berm out away from the stem of the plant. The dark soil where the stem met the soil in the pot should still be just visible near the trunk of the tree. You haven’t planted too deeply as long as you can see the original soil that the tree came in. The berm will collect water and direct it down to the root system below. Finally, water heavily after planting to remove any air pockets from the soil. Celebrate Earth Day/Mirth Day With Dr. Joel Goodman by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

The mission of The HUMOR Project has always been to focus full-time (or fool-time) on the positive power of humor and creativity… and how people can bring more humor and creativity into their lives and jobs. However, the origin of The HUMOR Project is not funny. When Dr. Joel Goodman founded The HUMOR Project in Saratoga Springs in 1977 he had no career premeditations. “The origin of our organization actually grew out of a very painful and scary time when my father faced a life-or-death surgery for an aortic aneurysm. It was during that time that our family discovered humor as a godsend to help us keep our sanity and humanity in the face of the terror and trauma,” he said. Goodman is thankful that his Dad recovered. “I was inspired to learn more about the positive power of humor, which led me to found The HUMOR Project. My goal was not to analyze humor to death, but rather to see if there are practical ways of bringing humor to life.” Goodman jokes that his Mom and Dad were always asked, “Your son does WHAT for a living?!” Goodman, the director of The HUMOR Project, is a popular speaker and seminar leader. When asked why laughter is so important Goodman laces the truth with humor. “Perhaps the most significant bottom line is your health– without it, you’re dead (literally or figuratively),” he said. He went on to explain the benefits of humor and laughter on mental health. ““Stress and burn-out have become household words in the 21st century,” he said. “Humor can be a powerful antidote to stress– in the midst of challenging times. It can help us to move from a “grim and bear it” mentality to a “grin and share it” orientation. This notion is captured well by George Burns, who said that ‘You can’t help growing older, but you can help growing old’.” Goodman continues, “If you stand rigidly in the face of stress, you are much more easily knocked off-balance. If you are flexible mentally, you are in a much better position to “roll with the punches” that life throws you.” Goodman knows humor has an impact on mental health. It is no surprise that he thinks there is a place for humor in the workplace. Since 1977, The HUMOR Project has been “taking humor seriously.” He cites five points: 1. The funny line and the bottom line intersect! Goodman said: “In a survey of 737 CEO’s, over 98 percent of them indicated they would much rather hire somebody with a good sense of humor than somebody without one. You can take your job seriously… and yourself lightly!” 2. A smile is the shortest distance between two people, according to Victor Borge: Goodman said: “Humor can be a magnet to attract people, to build positive working relationships, and to improve morale and teamwork. 3. The HAHA-AHA connection: Goodman said: “There definitely is a connection between humor and

creativity. Humor can jump-start your creativity and give you the energy to think (and laugh) outside the box!” 4. The laughing-learning link: Goodman said: “Humor can be a powerful (and delightful) way to capture and maintain attention and free up tension… which means that retention increases!” 5. Humor as a saving (and amusing) grace for the planet: Goodman said: “As our world gets proverbially smaller all the time, humor could help build important bridges between countries and cultures. As Erma Bombeck once said, ‘“When humor goes, there goes civilization!’” Goodman had been described by New Age magazine as “the first full-time humor educator in the world.” His programs on the positive power of humor and creativity have touched the lives of millions attending his presentations in Canada, Panama, Australia, Argentina, Antarctica, Japan, Taiwan, Russia, Norway, Sweden, England, Germany, South Africa, North Dakota, and many places in between. Since 1968, he has spoken at national and state conferences and in-house training programs for schools, human service organizations, corporations, non-profits, government agencies, and professional associations. Goodman has been a pioneer in focusing on practical ways for people to develop and use their sense of humor. He has been featured in 7000+ television and radio shows, newspapers, and magazines in 175+ countries, including: The TODAY Show, PBS, ABC NEWS’ prime-time special on The Mystery of Happiness (aired nationally three times), BBC, Latenight America, Donahue, CNBC’s Management Today, All Things Considered, the front page of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, The Washington Post, USA Today, Readers’ Digest, Successful Meetings, and numerous AP national features. What made his kids most proud was Goodman being highlighted on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Goodman has authored ten books and edited an exciting quarterly magazine, LAUGHING MATTERS, which has generated rave reviews and much laughter from thousands of people around the world. Goodman publishes the bi-monthly Laughing Matters e-zine, which has had 20,000+ subscribers from around the world. April is National Humor Month. Goodman will be featured at a free event on April 20, 2018, at the award-winning Northshire Bookstore on Broadway in Saratoga Springs starting at 7 p.m. He will be speaking about his eighth book, Laffirmations: 1,001 Ways to Add Humor to Your Life and Work, which is now in its 26th printing. In the book Goodman highlights 52 weeks of ideas to strengthen your sense of humor, including quotes, questions, and practical tips designed to make you smile. “I will share fun tips on how you can improve your H.Q. (Humor Quotient) and how you can get more smileage out of your life and work,” Goodman said. “As the book’s subtitle suggests, there are thousands

of ways of inviting smiles and laughter… in addition to joke-telling. Ultimately, humor is much broader than mere joke-telling… humor is an attitude, a perspective, a way of dealing with and embracing life’s challenges.” Goodman is aware that April 22 is Earth Day and will merge this into his presentation on April 20. “I am also looking forward to talking about my two most recent books: Humanizing Outdoor and Environmental Education and 201 Nature and Human Nature Activities. These companion books include a gazillion (give or take a quadrillion) practical, enjoyable, engaging, and fun activities to help youth and adults learn more about themselves, their values, and self-esteem,” Goodman said. “The books address the importance of prizing, preserving, and protecting Mother Nature.” The event at Northshire is free and open to the public. Goodman will be sticking around after the event to sign copies of his books saying a copy would “make great gifts for National Humor Month, Earth Day, birthdays, and mirthdays.” Goodman notes that humor is different for each person. “At The HUMOR Project, we have been promoting the positive use of humor as a tool to build people up and bring people together rather than as a weapon to tear people down and tear people apart,” he said. He gives the example of being a part of the “Laughter Has No Accent” exchange program with Russia 30 years ago. He said humor bridged together cultures. He also had the opportunity to speak in South Africa after Nelson Mandela had been released from prison. He said that experience was all about “focusing on positive humor and creativity as ways of bringing us together and building on what we have in common as human/humane/humor beings.” Goodman knows his career, which has spanned decades, can be described as serendipitous. He has given humor presentations to millions of people in all 50 states and all seven continents. Despite traveling around the world, sharing the power of humor with millions, he says some of his fondest memories are of sponsoring 20 international humor conferences in Saratoga Springs at the City Center with his wife and conference coordinator, Margie Ingram. What’s next for Goodman? “I may sign up with Elon Musk to give the first humor presentation on Mars.” To sign up for the free Laughing Matters email newsletter and for more information on The HUMOR Project, including information about the Speakers Bureau and HUMOResources (the online bookstore), visit their website: www.HumorProject.com. Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week

Miller 8

These adorable, super playful Lab/Shepherd mixes were born at this Gentleman’s farm in Georgia. A Momma dog came up to his house and days later presented him with 8 beautiful babies! She was a great Momma and he fell in love with her and decided he was going to keep Momma, get her spayed, but he needed help finding homes for all the babies! They were born February 9th, so they will be 10 weeks old on the day that they arrive at the shelter! Since they’ve been hand raised, they are very social, loving little babies!

Roseanne & Vanna

These two scruffy sisters were surrendered to a high kill shelter down South, because their owners “couldn’t keep them anymore”. They were in the same shelter and foster home as Veronica and they became friends with her, and are now heading up North with her! Roseanne and Vanna are two Terrier mixes who are around 4-5 months old and are truly sweethearts! They get along with everyone and make friends quickly, and would make a great addition to a family looking for a small to medium sized dog!

Jesse

Jesse is only 20 pounds and approximately 4 months old right now, so they say! We actually don’t know much about Jesse except that he found himself at a high kill shelter in Alabama and he’s a good old All American Mixed Breed! By looking at him, we think that he has a very kissable face, a beautiful coat, and a sweet personality!

Vietnam War Veterans To Reunite

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Half a century ago, more than 185 guys from the Capital Region shipped out to Vietnam together on Halloween, 1968. Almost nobody in the 1018th Service and Support Company of the Army Reserve at the Horace Bradt Army Reserve Center in Niskayuna thought they’d end up in that war. After all, they were supposed to be held in “reserve” to “serve” and “support” the regular Army. These men all had jobs; many had wives and young children. The mobilization disrupted everything and held the potential for being a death sentence. For whatever reason from patriotism to fulfilling a commitment, they all went. And, now, 50 years later, they are getting back together to remember and catch up. Fifty years later, the 1018th veterans are holding a “welcome home again” party at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at the Colonie Elks Lodge in Latham. A memorial for Spc. 5 James McNeilly, who was killed in action, is planned. Friends and family members welcome. Hot and cold buffet dinner with “no C rations” is $30 per person payable by May 1. Checks should be made out to the 1018th S&S Reunion and mailed to John Kawola, 2412 4th Ave., Watervliet, NY 12189. For information, contact Don Wilcox of Scotia at Don Wilcock at 518-258-4373, Frank Merges of Delmar at 518-4619503 or Kenny Henk of Guilderland at 518-356-0387.

Make Moving Much Easier

It should come as no surprise that spring kicks off one of the busiest times of year in the housing market. Warm weather makes it more comfortable to see and display homes, leading to more listings and open houses. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average person in the United States changes residences more than 11 times in his or her lifetime. With each move, the process of moving may become more familiar. But even the most practiced nomad can find moving to be an overwhelming experience.

Those on the cusp of moving and nervous about packing up and leaving can employ a few tricks to make moving much easier. Research areas carefully Buyers are advised to do their research when seeking new towns or cities to call home. There are many factors to consider, including school district ratings, proximity to shopping, distance from work/commute times, availability of transportation, climate, and crime ratings. Before falling in love with a particular home, potential buyers can visit the area in which the home is located during a typical weekday to get a feel for the atmosphere. Check out shopping centers, observe the residents and drive by the schools and businesses. This can help paint an accurate picture that may or may not differ from that depicted in the real estate listing. Stack the deck Working with qualified professionals who have gone through the moving process before can make for easier work for buyers and sellers. Ask for recommendations regarding real estate companies, real estate attorneys, home inspectors, insurance agents, and all of the other people who will assist with buying, selling and moving. Carefully vet these professionals, relying on third-party reviews as well as any information provided by the Better Business Bureau. Secure temporary storage It can help to put some belongings into a storage center prior to moving, and then gradually take items from the storage unit to your new home. This will free up space to make repairs to your new home and give you time to figure out decorating schemes while ensuring clutter won’t get in the way of renovation projects. New homeowners also can take their time sorting through boxes and getting rid of items they may not need in their new homes.

Get estimates and verify licensing

The BBB advises consumers to verify all licensing for movers. Solicit at least three in-home estimates and get those figures in writing. Confirm insurance coverage for the company chosen, and be sure to have all agreed upon information spelled out explicitly in a written contract. Red flags to consider include movers who don’t make on-site inspections for estimates and those who demand payment in advance before the move. Have a first-week survival kit

How Working Parents Can Create Better Work-Life Balance

Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family. • Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.

Caregivers needed: CNA, HHA, LPN, PCA’s. Paid training & cert’s for PCA. Jobs caring for people in their homes. Call Home Helpers at 584-5885. $100 sign on bonus for persons already having PCA or HHA ceritificate.

• Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.

Full time workers in the construction field needed. No experience necessary, benefits package, competitive wages and NYS approved apprenticeship program. Valid drivers license and vehicle a must. Drug free workplace. Equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage woman, minorities, individuals with disabilities and veterans to apply. Call (518) 766-9360 between 12-4 pm.

• Unplug when you get home. Perhaps the simplest and most effective way for parents to regain a healthy work-life balance is to unplug their devices. Employing “Do not disturb” settings on smartphones and turning off tablets can ensure parents don’t spend their time at home working but connecting with their families.

• Request changes to work schedules. While technology may have largely eliminated the separation between the office and home, working parents can use that to their advantage by asking their employees to alter their work schedules. Telecommuting one or two days a week can help parents feel more connected to their families, while flex schedules can ensure working parents don’t miss any of their children’s dance recitals or weekday afternoon ballgames.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is no small task for today’s working parents. But such a goal is possible.

Women and STEM

or call Jenn DiSario at 262-289-2395 for more information.

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computer-science degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence.

Warehouse & Production Workers Needed. Temp to hire possible. $11-13/hr. Full time positions. Various shifts. Call AccuStaff Today 518-396-5866. Apply online www.accustaffny.com

According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than non-STEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

The Best Ways To Prevent Car Theft

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a vehicle is stolen every 44 seconds in the United States. And it’s not just the expensive models that are targets of thieves. Drivers may not realize they are making obvious mistakes that can make their vehicles targets for potential thieves. Guarding against car theft comes down to avoiding common pitfalls, using common sense and making vehicles less attractive to thieves. • Lock doors. This may seem like a no-brainer, but giving thieves easy access to vehicles increases the risk of theft. Always lock the vehicle, even if you’re only

ing spots when out and about. These include spaces that are close to building entrances, near security cameras and in well-lit areas. Cars that are more visible are less likely to be targeted by thieves. • Don’t leave it running. According to the safety resource Safewise, nearly half

of all auto thefts occur as a result of not performing reasonable precautions — such as failure to turn off the vehicle after exiting. More than one-third of all thefts occur near the car owner’s residence. Resist the urge to “warm up” the vehicle by leaving it running with the keys in the ignition.

• Get VIN etching. Etching the VIN on windows makes it more expensive for car thieves to resell a vehicle or its parts without having to make replacements. • Buy a tracking system. In the event a car is stolen, GPS tracking devices can help cops recover the vehicle more rapidly.

Car theft can be a serious concern, but exercising caution can prevent vehicles from being targeted.
