RESTORING HEADLIGHTS CAN DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE VISIBILITY (MS) -- The road can be unpredictable, and many things can compromise driver safety. Though some of these things, like smartphones and loud music, are easily avoided distractions, some safety risks require a little more effort to overcome. Such is the case with cloudy headlights. Cloudy headlights can compromise a driver’s vision, putting motorists and their passengers at risk of accident and injury. Though it’s easy to overlook headlights when performing routine vehicle maintenance, drivers should know that, as headlights age, they become discolored and develop a hazy or yellowed appearance due to exposure to the sunlight, pollution, ozone and chemicals used in car washes. As headlights become increasingly hazy, they emit less light and glare increases significantly. “Driving with headlights that have become clouded over time leaves drivers vulnerable to risky driving conditions,” said Ann-Marie Hines, Senior Marketing Manager of Philips Automtoive. “These dim headlights function improperly for drivers, limiting the amount of light on the road, and actually dramatically increase the glare that other drivers see.” Fortunately, ensuring optimal headlight performance can be relatively simple and dramatically improve visibility, ensuring the safety of drivers and their passengers. * Clean headlights before driving in inclement weather. Drivers know to clean their windshields before hitting the road in snowstorms, but few drivers exercise the same caution with their headlights. Salt from snowy roads or debris blown about from seasonal winds can accumulate on headlight lenses, decreasing their effectiveness and light output as a result. So before hitting the road in inclement weather, be sure to remove any dirt or film from headlight lenses that might have built up over time. * Address headlight issues before they appear. Though headlights will inevitably wear down over time, drivers can still take preventative measures to improve the performance of their headlights so their visibility is not compromised. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit includes a pre-treatment that provides long-lasting UV protection for headlight lenses. Thanks to the kit, which also includes a cleaner/polish and restorer/protector, drivers can restore a headlight lens in as little as 30 minutes. Drivers hesitant to perform their own restoration can calm their nerves by taking advantage of a short how-to video that shows motorists how to restore headlight lens clarity in a matter of minutes. The video, which can be found at www. philipsautolighting.com/headlightkit, can help drivers restore their headlights to “like new” quality while increasing visibility and reducing glare.

* Replace headlight bulbs. Much like light bulbs used in a home, headlight bulbs tend to wear down over time. Humidity, electrical resistance, filament fatigue and general usage combine to reduce the light output of headlight bulbs, which experts recommend should be replaced every two years.

When replacing headlight bulbs, drivers can upgrade existing bulbs with a new generation of high performance light bulbs that mark a dramatic improvement over the traditional halogen bulbs which are standard on many vehicles. Philips Upgrade Headlight Bulbs are designed to put substantially more light on the road while creating a better beam pattern that is much longer than that produced by standard halogen bulbs. Available in a variety of brands, these uniquely designed bulbs are even tailored to meet specific driver’s needs, ensuring commuters, soccer moms and sports enthusiasts won’t fall victim to poor visibility no matter where their travels take them.

* Routinely clean your vehicle’s glass and mirrors. Dirty and aging headlight lenses are not the only thing that can compromise a driver’s vision on the road. Debris and film buildup on windshield glass and on rear- and side-view mirrors can reduce vision, especially for drivers who smoke inside their vehicles. Make cleaning the glass and mirrors inside and outside of your vehicle part of your routine vehicle maintenance. Such cleaning won’t take very long, but it will significantly improve visibility. When cleaning side-view mirrors, be sure to properly adjust them to eliminate blind spots.

YOUR VEHICLE MAY OFFER INSIGHT ON YOUR PERSONALITY Though books should never be judged by their covers, very often individuals judge others by the clothes they wear, the home they live in and even the car they drive.

It can be interesting to examine what a particular car says about the person behind the wheel. More than 200 million drivers are licensed in the United States and Canada, and these drivers choose their vehicles for a variety of reasons. Some choose vehicles because of their utility, while others select a particular car or truck because of the message it conveys. Very often drivers will idealize their vehicles, lending them human qualities or naming them as if they were a friend. Sometimes owners will seek attributes in a vehicle that mirror their own self-image.

“A car says a lot about a person,” says Dr. Charles Kenny, a consumer psychologist who studies car buyers and their needs. It’s a reflection of who you are.”

Just think about the once-popular minivan. Minivans once conveyed the image of the ideal family vehicle driven primarily by mothers. But in recent years, minivan sales have dipped so much that certain brands no longer produce them. Many drivers no longer want to present the image that comes with driving a minivan, compelling many to opt for crossovers and SUVs instead.

Although there are some stereotypes attached to owning certain vehicles, some truths lie beyond the jokes and banter. Sports car owners can be flashy and crave attention. They may want to live on the edge with high speed or know their sleek rides will impress others on the road. High-end roadsters may make a statement about financial status as well, as such cars are often among the most expensive vehicles on the road. Sedan owners may be especially practical people, as sedans are large enough to fit a number of passengers, but they’re also affordable and tend to boast good fuel economy.

Drivers of compacts and economy cars could fall into two categories. There are those who are just starting out financially and may not be able to afford a larger vehicle, while others choose economy cars, particularly hybrids and electric subcompacts, because such vehicles tend to be more eco-friendly.

Sport-utility vehicles premiered as vehicles designed for sporting and off-roading. Not too long ago it was rare to see too many trucks on the roadways. Now you’d be hard-pressed to find roadways that aren’t flooded with SUVs. Mid-sized SUVs have become the new minivan, making SUVs some of the most popular vehicles on the roads.

Functionality is the backbone of trucks. Truck owners generally have driven pickups most of their lives and tend to live in more rural areas. Some will outfit their trucks with larger tires and lift kits, and these drivers could be looking for power and attention on the road.

Luxury vehicles from manufacturers like Lexus, Audi, Acura, BMW, and Jaguar are largely driven by white collar professionals who have the cash to afford vehicles with all the bells and whistles. Luxury cars turn heads and can be status symbols. However, some luxury cars have become more attainable for those who purchase preowned or lease, making it difficult to tell who might be behind the wheel.

It’s not just the make or model of a car that can say a lot about its driver. Vehicle color also says a lot. For example, silver hints at a prestigious or elegant person. White cars are for those who like things clean and enjoy pristine surroundings. Red cars indicate flashy people who are willing to take risks, while orange cars are driven by those who are artistic and daring. Browns and beiges can indicate drivers who are down to earth and natural. A vehicle can say many things about a driver before he or she even speaks a word.

THE DANGER OF SMOKING WHILE DRIVING Using a cell phone, texting and drinking alcoholic beverages are all activities that can lead to fines or arrest if done while in a moving vehicle. But in some areas, it is already illegal or may soon be, to smoke in a vehicle if in the presence of children. Since 2006, several communities across North America have implemented laws to prevent smoking in cars when children are present, and campaigns for smoke-free car laws are poised to continue. The public has become increasingly aware that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, includes the smoke that a smoker exhales and the smoke that comes from burning tobacco products. Thousands of toxic chemicals are present in secondhand smoke, including formaldehyde, lead, butane, cyanide, and carbon monoxide. These dangerous chemicals can be inhaled and tend to linger in the air for hours or longer. Smoke residue also clings to a smoker’s body and hair and can even surface inside of a home or vehicle, according to The Mayo Clinic. Asthma, heart disease and cancer may result from contact with secondhand smoke. When someone smokes within the small enclosed space of a car, passengers are exposed to air that is many times more toxic than what the EPA considers hazardous air quality, even if a window is down. What’s more, the particulates of tobacco smoke that are absorbed in the upholstery off-gas back into the air even after many days have passed, exposing riders to toxins well beyond when someone smoked in the car.

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC offers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have gotten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned income falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depending on your filing status and number of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple filing jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefit. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and filing requirements must be met. You must file a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to file. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am 5pm.

CALLING ALL MENTORS!

CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email Avon@ scherffinsurance.com.

FLOOD READINESS STILLWATER - Melting snows, frozen ground, heavy rains: it’s flood season. We can’t control the weather, but we can prepare. Awareness is critical: monitor local news, know escape routes and shelter locations, avoid flood waters, inform loved ones of location and evacuations. Also, create and maintain a “ready kit” with several days of supplies, and know how to use it. Excellent checklists are available through American Red Cross at www.redcross.org or FEMA at www. ready.gov or sign up for the Red Cross flood assistance app at www.redcross.org/ mobileapps. To learn more about your Stillwater Community Emergency Management Committee, contact Chairman Tom Rinaldi at tomrinaldi1@gmail.com

CAPTAIN & CAPITAL DISTRICT CONSULTING OFFER AFFORDABLE SAT PREP COURSE! CLIFTON PARK- Captain is proud to offer SAT Prep with Capital District Consulting, a company whose mission is self-improvement.  Thirty percent of the course fee will be donated to CAPTAIN programs and services.   SAT Prep specializes in strategies and techniques that all students should know before taking the SAT.  The stated goal of the course is to prevent test anxiety and to fully prepare students to perform at their best on both the math and English portions of the exam.  Colleges often base scholarships on a combination of grades and SAT scores, so underperforming on the test can cost you and your family thousands of dollars in lost scholarships.  Most colleges use the SAT scores in admission decisions, so don’t sell yourself short!  Get into the college you want by earning the score you are capable of achieving. Please go to www.capitaldistrictconsulting.com and register today.  The course fee is $225.00 and classes will run from 7:00-9:00 pm on April 3, 10, 21, 24, 28 and May 1.  Classes will be held in the conference room of CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services in Clifton Park, located at 5 Municipal Plaza— Suite 3. Scholarships are available for students in need. Questions? Call Larry Silverman @ 469-0259.

LEARN TO TOW CARGO SAFELY Warm weather is on the horizon, and people from all over are preparing their vehicles for another season of road trips. In addition to packing the interior cargo areas full of equipment and luggage, many road-trippers also haul gear and recreational accessories with them.

PHOTOS FOR ILLUSTRATION ONLY. EXPIRES 4/16/14

Equipment

There’s more to towing than hitching a trailer and hitting the open road. A number of factors come into play when towing cargo or another vehicle, including the towing capacity of the vehicle doing the hauling. The following are some safety tips for road trippers hitting the road with trailer in tow.

Different manufacturers offer towing packages equipped to work in concert with your vehicle. Towing packages may include certain types of hitches, batteries, flasher systems, extended-view side mirrors, and even special axles and tires. In many areas, a trailer with a loaded weight of more than 1,500 pounds requires a separate braking system and a breakaway switch located on the tongue of the trailer that activates the trailer brakes in the event it separates from the tow vehicle. Having the right equipment can mean the difference between safely towing cargo and getting in an accident.

Tow vehicles

Ability

While many vehicles have towing capabilities, not all of those vehicles are necessarily right for the job. Review the towing capacities of various vehicles depending on the type of trailer that will be towed. A larger, more powerful vehicle may be necessary if you will be towing something large and heavy, such as a boat or a recreational vehicle. You may need more horsepower to maintain a safe driving speed when towing especially heavy cargo.

Having a lot of power and the right equipment is not enough to safely tow cargo. Recklessness on the road, which includes driving over the speed limit, is a recipe for an accident. It typically takes time and some practice for drivers to grow accustomed to driving while towing cargo. Driving while towing cargo requires that drivers maneuver their vehicles differently than they would in more typical conditions, and that they drive at slower speeds while leaving room for a larger turning

518-399-6675

radius. In addition, drivers must accommodate for the extra weight when braking. Vehicle check

Verifying that the trailer hitch is secure is not the only inspection drivers must conduct before hitting the open road. The vehicle doing the towing should be serviced, and any repairs should be made. Check fluid levels, particularly the transmission fluid. In addition, make sure the water level in the battery is acceptable and have the motor oil changed if it is nearing its mileage limit. It’s also a good idea to replace the air filter, examine the tires for adequate tread and test the brakes.

When the trip begins, give your vehicle and the hitch a onceover to double-check that everything is in working order. This can be done during service station stops along the trip. Spring is a season of recreational fun and long road trips, but it pays to play it safe when towing gear and other cargo.

Red Ribbons Are Being Cut Everywhere In Southern Saratoga County

I love the color red. It has always been a family favorite, and most of the cars we’ve owned have been that color. I also love celebrations of happy occasions, so it’s fitting that The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County uses a wide red ribbon to celebrate new business openings, anniversaries, relocations, and many other notable occasions throughout the region. In the past several weeks, we’ve had the chance to cut quite a few Pete Bardunias, of them, at local businesses such as Villago on Ballston President/CEO, the Chamber Lake, the Ugly Rooster in Mechanicville (along with the of Southern Saratoga County Mechanicville-Stillwater Area Chamber of Commerce), Gateway House of Peace in Ballston Spa (along with the Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association), Mr. Formal Wear in Halfmoon, and Artique Co-op, Cartwheels Gymnastics, West End Bagels and Arts & Glass in Clifton Park. We get great assistance from local and regional officials and other dignitaries too. Congressman Paul Tonko, Senators Kathy Marchione and Hugh Farley, Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, Town supervisors and council members, mayors, and representatives from Senator Gillibrand’s office, the University at Albany, and others have attended, offered support, resolutions and other kind assistance to these events. And we always sign the ribbons with congratulatory notes to leave as a momento at each location, a practice also shared by the Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association. Why do we celebrate in this manner? Because ribbon cuttings are a very visible, tangible way to give a big boost to a business or organization during their celebration. Photos of happy business owners, smiling broadly and beaming with pride at their achievement, adorn Facebook pages and newspaper articles. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of being involved with the Chamber. Is your business or organization looking to celebrate a happy occasion? Give us a call at (518) 371-7748 or email me at pete@southernsaratoga.org for more information.
