MASTER THE WEDDING SAVE-THE-DATE

Many couples’ weddings take more than a year to plan. Couples want all of the special people in their lives to witness their vows, and giving guests advance notice can ensure as many loved ones as possible attend the ceremony. To be certain that guests have ample notice to clear their schedules, many couples now turn to save-the-date cards, which announce weddings well in advance of the actual wedding day. Save-the-date cards once were reserved only for weddings that required travel or special circumstances, such as destination weddings. But such cards have now become commonplace for all weddings. That’s because many people plan vacations or business trips anywhere from four to six months in advance. Busy people require plenty of notice to include this important date on their calendars, particularly when wed-

Kleinfeld Bridal, a premiere New York bridal boutique, says that save-the-date cards are typically mailed six to eight months prior to the wedding, though some are sent as early as a year before the big day. Once a date and a location is secured, save-the-dates can be ordered and mailed. Save-the-date cards require couples to assemble their guest lists well in advance of the wedding. The leading bridal resource The Knot notes that everyone who will get a wedding invitation should also receive a save-the-date card. There’s no turning back once cards are sent, so couples will need to be certain everyone they want to attend is getting advanced notice. It’s acceptable to mail savethe-date cards even if some wedding day details are still up in the air. Guests really only need to know the date and location of the wedding. Couples also can use the savethe-date card to direct invitees to a wedding website where guests can learn the details of the wedding as they unfold. RSVP information does not need to be included on the savethe-date card. Save-the-date cards are much less formal than invitations, so couples can have fun with them. They can showcase couples’ clever personalities or funny quirks. Keep in mind it is in poor taste to mention gifts or registries on save-the-date cards. There will be plenty of time to direct guests to registries later on. Couples are increasingly turning to save-the-date cards when planning their weddings to make sure busy friends and family will have enough time to make plans to attend their weddings.

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the 2015 Real Weddings Study from the premier multiplatform wedding resource The Knot, the most popular month for couples to get engaged is December. Sixteen percent of survey respondents became engaged in the final month of the calendar year. The survey also found that the average length of a couple’s engagement is now 14.5 months. Where June once was the most popular month of the year to tie the knot, today’s couples are now heading down the aisle most often in October. Seventeen percent of weddings now occur in October, closely followed by 15 percent in September. And at what age are couples saying their “I dos”? The average marrying age for a bride is 29 and it is 31 for the groom.

The book is an historical biographical novel about Clara Wolcott Driscoll, the hidden genius behind much of the stained glass art of Louis C. Tiffany. For most of her writing life, Echo Heron has “endeavored to champion remarkable women who unjustly go unrecognized simply because they are women.” Following live musical entertainment and a delicious lunch, a panel of women who work in careers typically chosen by men will discuss their career joys and challenges. Doors open at 11:30. Lunch choices are Sliced Sirloin of Beef, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Grilled Salmon with Herbed Garlic Sauce, and Eggplant Parmesan. The price is $25.00. Checks should be made payable to the Friends of the Library. Meal choice should be written on the check. Checks may be left at the Library Welcome Desk with “Two Towns-One Book, Books & Lunch” written on the envelope or mailed to the Friends of the Library, Attention: Books & Lunch, 475 Moe Road, Clifton Park, NY 12065. INTERACTIVE PUMPS CAN FUEL MORE FUN WHEN FILLING THE TANK

Digital entertainment has taken over the world. Not to be outdone, at least one fuel company is making the process of filling up more interactive. BP Global recently introduced interactive fuel pumps at various sites around New York and Chicago that are intended to make filling up a gas tank a more enjoyable experience. The smart pump is named “Miles,” and the company calls it a BP Personality Pump. Miles uses a proprietary interactive technology to audibly greet customers and initiate the fueling experience. While filling up, customers can select music on Pandora, record a video e-card to share on social media or play music trivia. The pump responds in real time through a touchscreen tablet-like device and provides drivers with a variety of entertainment options. Developed through a partnership with The Onion and Pandora, Miles has a clever personality. According to Donna Sanker, chief marketing officer for BP Fuels North America, “We believe this technology could change the way people think about the typical fill-up and give consumers another reason to visit our stations.” After pumping gas, drivers can send themselves a text message with content created at the pump, a link to the Pandora station they chose and a special return offer.

Although these interactive pumps are still being tested, they may soon be noticed across the country. They’re particularly targeted to millennials, who consistently immerse themselves in technology and rely heavily on digital content. BP has not yet revealed plans to expand Miles to pumps in other high-profile markets. Only time will tell if the company expands its interactive fuel pump efforts and whether competitors like Exxon Mobil, Shell, Chevron, and Valero develop their own interactive technology.

FOLLOW THESE CHILD SAFETY SEAT REGULATIONS

Protecting young children in automobiles should be of the utmost importance for parents when on the road. Studies have shown that children who are seated in age- and size-appropriate vehicle restraint systems may be at a significantly lower risk of sustaining serious or fatal injuries during motor vehicle crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Traffic crashes account for the leading cause of death among children in the United States. Because of their diminutive statures, kids who suffer injuries in motor vehicle accidents may fair far worse than adults who suffer similar injuries.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Highway Loss Data Institute states that all 50 states and the District of Columbia have child safety seat laws. Child safety seat laws require that children travel in approved child restraints or booster seats, and some permit or require older children to use adult safety belts. For up-to-date regulations regarding specific states or U.S. territories, drivers can consult with their state’s or territory’s Highway Safety Offices. These offices will provide detailed explanations of height and weight limits and when children can be moved between seats. For example, in New Jersey, children under 2 years of age and under 30 pounds must ride in rear-facing infant seats. Children who are under 40 pounds and up to 4 years of age can be moved to forward-facing seats only if they have exceeded the weight limits of rear-facing seats. Children under the age of 8 and a height of 57 inches may move to a beltpositioning booster seat. Once children grow taller than 57 inches or reach age 8, it is safe for them to ride in properly secured seat belts. Canadian regulations By law, Canadian children must be secured in a car seat made for their weight and height. As regulations vary in the provinces and territories, it is essential that drivers read the provincial/territorial regulations for laws in their areas. According to Transport Canada, there are four stages of safety seat usage for children. Stage 1 begins with rear-facing seats placed at a 45-degree angle so that the baby’s head is supported. When the child outgrows the car seat’s weight and height limits, he or she can move on to a forward-facing seat (Stage 2). However, it is best to leave the child rear-facing as long as possible to prevent head injury. Forward-facing seats have harness straps that are more narrow than vehicle seat belts and fit children’s small shoulders. Children should be snugly harnessed. The seat also should be

While many parents understand the need for proper child safety seats, keeping up-to-date on regulations can be challenging. However, infant seats, convertible seats and booster seats can mean the difference between minor injuries and fatality in the event of accidents.

3 TIPS TO PREPARE TO SELL YOUR HOME

According to Realtor.com, spring is the busiest and best season to sell a home. While a good home can find a buyer any time of year, homeowners might find the buyers’ pool is strongest in spring and into summer. The reasons for that are many, ranging from parents wanting to move when their children are not in school to buyers wanting to move when the weather is most accommodating.

Because spring is such a popular time to sell a home, homeowners who want to put their homes on the market should use winter as an opportunity to prepare their homes for the prying eyes of prospective buyers. The following tips can help homeowners during the pre-selling preparation process. 1. Address the exterior of the home.

February 16, 2017

Winter can be harsh on a home’s exterior, so as winter winds down, homeowners who want to sell their homes should make an effort to address anything that might negatively affect their homes’ curb appeal. A study of homes in Greenville, S.C., from researchers at Clemson University found that the value of homes with landscapes that were upgraded from “good” to “excellent” increased by 6 to 7 percent. If it’s in the budget, hire professional landscapers to fix any problematic landscaping or address any issues that arose during the winter. Homeowners with green thumbs can tackle such projects on their own, but hiring professionals is akin to staging inside the home.

The Appraisal Institute suggests homeowners clear clutter out of their homes before appraisers visit, and the same approach can be applied to open houses. Buyers, like appraisers, see cluttered homes as less valuable. In addition, a home full of clutter might give buyers the impression, true or not, that the home was not well maintained.

ARE YOU

Moving? Selling? Renovating?

3. Eliminate odors.

A home’s inhabitants grow accustomed to odors that might be circulating throughout the house. Pet odor, for instance, might not be as strong to a home’s residents as it is to guests and prospective buyers. Because windows tend to stay closed throughout the winter, interior odors can be even stronger come late-winter than they are during the rest of the year. A thorough cleaning of the house, including vacuuming and removal of any pet hair that accumulated over the winter, can help to remove odor. In the weeks leading up to the open house, bathe pets more frequently, using a shampoo that promotes healthy skin so pet dander is not as prevalent. Open windows when the weather allows so more fresh air comes into the home. Spring is a popular and potentially lucrative time to sell a home, and homeowners who spend winter preparing their homes for the market may reap even greater rewards.

2. Conquer interior clutter. Clutter has a way of accumulating over the winter, when people tend to spend more time indoors than they do throughout the rest of the year. Homeowners who want to put their homes on the market in spring won’t have the luxury of waiting until spring to do their “spring” cleaning, so start clearing any clutter out in winter, even resolving to make an effort to prevent its accumulation throughout winter. Just like buyers are impressed by curb appeal, they are turned off by clutter.

GETTING THE BETTER OF GREASE: HOW DIYERS AND MECHANICS CAN COMBAT GREASE AND STAINS

(MS) — Seasoned do-ityourselfers and mechanics know that DIY projects and working on cars and trucks can sometimes be messy business. While work stations can often be cleaned in a matter of minutes, grease and other stains on clothing can linger for some time, even remaining in the washing machine long after wash cycles have ended.

WWW.CAPITALAND.NET Combating grease stains and their resulting odors has long been a problem for DIYers, auto mechanics and technicians. But there are ways to get the better of grease and even prevent future stains. • Act instantly. Allowing grease stains to linger on clothing can make them harder to remove. Professional mechanics and weekend DIYers should check their work gear for stains when they finish working for the day, immediately treating any areas that have been blemished by grease or other stains. The quicker such stains are treated, the less likely they are to set and become permanent. • Treat stains with specialized detergents. Ordinary laundry detergents may effectively combat everyday stains, but such products are often ineffective at treating the stains and grease that technicians’ work clothes are vulnerable to. Permatex®, a leading innovator in chemical technology for automotive maintenance and repair and the maker of Fast Orange® hand cleaners, has developed Fast Orange Grease X Mechanic’s Laundry Detergent (www.fastorangelaundry.com). Designed to quickly and effectively remove grease, stains, tar, oil, automotive fluids, and odors from technicians’ work clothes, Fast Orange Grease X features a built-in pretreater that is powerful enough to remove up to 99 percent of automotive stains and odors. Ideal for professional mechanics and automotive hobbyists alike, this specially formu-

lated detergent also disintegrates grease and soil as it cleans, ensuring no residual grease remains in the washing machine after each load. • Maintain a clean work area. Stains are a fact of life for mechanics, DIYers and hobbyists, but maintaining a clean, clutter-free work area can reduce the risk of accidents that lead to staining. Clean work areas at the end of each workday or DIY session, being sure to put all tools and gas cans away. • Take steps to prevent future stains. New projects tend to excite DIYers, mechanics and automotive hobbyists. But before diving into a new project, professionals and novices alike can take steps to prevent the stains that can form as they learn on the job. Research how to approach a new project to reduce the likelihood of accidental spills. Washing work clothes with Fast Orange Grease X can even make work clothes less vulnerable to future stains. “When formulating Fast Orange Grease X, we added a proprietary soil release/antistatic agent that repels future soil and stains,” said Permatex senior product manager Dan Clarke. Stains and spills come with the territory of automotive and DIY work. But mechanics and DIY enthusiasts can employ several strategies to get the better of grease and other stains.

(MS) — Many drivers are less comfortable driving at night than during the daytime. Despite the fact that far more vehicles are on the road during the daytime than at night, studies have shown that approximately 65 percent of accidents occur at night. Many of those accidents and much of the discomfort drivers feel at night can be

traced to inadequate lighting. Visual acuity, which is directly related to the amount of light provided by the environment, can be diminished by as much as 70 percent at night. The human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision, so when driving at night, drivers often experience a loss of depth perception and difficulty distinguishing between colors as contrasts fade away. This is especially problematic for aging drivers, a segment

of the driving population that is on the rise. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 36.8 million licensed drivers age 65 and older on the road in 2013, a figure the NHTSA estimates will increase to 57 million by 2030. As drivers age, the lenses of their eyes become more opaque, reducing the amount of light their eyes can receive. For example, at age 40, the average driver may already need twice as much light than a driver at

$

age 20. At age 65, that need can climb to a whopping eight to 10 times more light (see graph). But aging drivers need not sacrifice their nocturnal independence just to stay safe behind the wheel. The following are three ways aging motorists can improve their nighttime visibility. 1. Upgrade headlights. According to a recent study from the automotive club AAA, the halogen headlights

2. Give fellow drivers more room. In daylight hours, drivers might feel comfortable giving the vehicles in front of them a certain amount of room. Aging drivers can expand that comfort zone between themselves and fellow drivers at night. This extra space can help all motorists feel more comfortable, and it gives drivers more time to react if the drivers in front of them swerve or brake quickly. 3. Maintain headlights.

greatly improving nighttime visibility. Unlike major vehicle safety systems, such as air bags, three-point seat belts and anti-lock braking systems that provide “passive” protection for drivers, Philips lighting promotes “active” safety protection by increasing overall visibility and illumination. This allows drivers to not only see each other better, but also to see further down the road so they can avoid potential hazards.

found in more than 80 percent of vehicles on the road today fail to safely illuminate unlit roadways, even when vehicles are moving at speeds as low as 40 miles per hour. Upgrade headlight bulbs are designed to put more light on the road, helping to combat the natural deterioration of vision that so many aging drivers deal with on a daily basis. Philips Upgrade Headlight Bulbs can deliver up to 100 percent more light on the road than standard halogen bulbs,

Often overlooked, headlight maintenance is another way older drivers can counter the effects that aging has on their nocturnal vision. Inspect headlights regularly, checking to make sure that plastic headlight lenses have not turned yellow or foggy. Designed to restore plastic lenses in less than 30 minutes, the Philips Headlight Restoration Kit quickly and effectively combats clouding on headlights as well as taillights, turn signals and reflective lens covers, helping aging drivers see more clearly at night while also making vehicles more visible to other drivers. RIDESHARING KEEPS SENIORS ON THE MOVE

Losing the ability to drive and get around is one of the most challenging aspects of growing older for seniors. This loss of independence can result in loneliness, depression and isolation. Often seniors have to rely on family to take them places, leaving them at the mercy of a friend or relative’s schedule.

One of the ways to keep vehicles running strong for years on end is to adhere to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Although there are many factors drivers cannot control, including recalls, weather and road conditions, proper maintenance is something drivers

working order. Old oil becomes more viscous and can lose its efficacy. While changing motor oil is important, motorists should follow the owner’s manual or the factory maintenance schedule regarding how often it needs to be changed, as all vehicles are not alike. The old myth that cars and

Check battery contacts Many modern car batteries do not require a lot of maintenance. However, one problem that may occur is a buildup of minerals or corrosion from leaking battery fluid on the contacts. In such instances, use a battery cleaning brush to clean the

contacts and then replace the cables. Tire maintenance Properly inflated, balanced and rotated tires make for a smooth, safe ride. Check that tires are wearing evenly and that the vehicle is not pulling to one side. A lack of tread on tires requires they be replaced. Because tires can be expensive, many drivers put off routine tire maintenance. But this can be a costly mistake. Tires that are worn or not properly inflated can cause skidding, problems braking and accidents. Blowouts also may occur, putting drivers, their passengers and fellow motorists in danger. It’s best to be proactive with regard to tire maintenance. Maintaining a vehicle in adherence to manufacturer guidelines can prolong the life of the car, improve its safety and increase its tradein or resale value.

Oil checks and changes are vital to engine health.
