Zeva

Domestic Shorthair/ Mix 3 Year Old Female, White/Black

Ziva is a gorgeous 2-year-old female calico. Her orange, black and white markings are very pretty. She looks a bit like a tiger from the back and in the front she has a few perfect polka dots. She came back to the shelter after her previous owners decided they weren’t really ready for a cat. She is very nice and playful, with a cute pink nose. She talks with you when she’s happy, and purrs to show affection. She doesn’t care for dogs because she thinks they’re scary.

Consistency in pillow firmness or softness can contribute to familiarity. * Comfort colors. Pick a wall color that complements the linens you’ve selected, but make it a comfort color. Nothing too bold. And make it a rental-friendly paint color, which means that it would be acceptable in a rental situation where bold wall colors may not be permitted. Joe Bodner, Prop., • Hemstreet Park • Mechanicville, NY 12118 will bring comfort to their home into adulthood. “Other accessories can change as your child grows,” says Thomasson. “By keeping the basics comfortable, calm and consistent, you’ll create an environment that helps them feel content.”

For families who may be moving into a new home, heed Thomasson’s advice: Prepare the kid’s room first. “This will send a message that they are your priority,” said Thomasson. Paint the walls with a familiar color, make up the bed in the very same way that you always did, and hang their special artwork. So, even if nothing else has been unpacked, the environment will feel familiar, bringing comfort and a sense of security from the very first night.

(NewsUSA) - When it comes to offering a sense of security to our children in an uncertain world, familiarity in the home is key, starting in their bedroom, where simple consistencies in surroundings -- added to a healthy routine -- can make a big difference. Here are some tips for decorating your child’s room from Professional Home Planner Jack Thomasson, one of the lead designers of the HGTV Dream Home 2013 on Kiawah Island, S.C.: * Linens make the bed -- and can be more important than the bed itself. You know your child better than your child knows himself. Select a duvet or comforter in a simple pattern and color that is suited to your child, but not childlike or themed. Add a complimentary solid-color coverlet or blanket. Two sets

* Line of sight. Getting into bed at night might be the only time your child sits still all day, and what you hang on the wall directly in front of their bed can leave a lasting impression with positive benefits. Did You Know? According to TGB Enterprises in Burlington, Ontario, kitchen renovations are the most popular home improvement projects. Renovating a kitchen is a great way to increase the value and also the functionality of a home. The National Kitchen & Bath Association’s latest market report says that, in the first three months of 2012, the number of homeowners who started a kitchen renovation was up more than 50 percent from the previous quarter. A kitchen is a central gathering place and is one of the most popular family gathering spots in the house. With traditional dining rooms being eliminated in favor of open, eat-in kitchens and entertaining spaces, more attention than ever is now placed on a well-designed kitchen. The average remodeling budget for a kitchen renovation exceeds $30,000. But there are ways to keep budgets in check. * Do some of the work yourself to reduce money spent on labor costs. * Consider laminate flooring and counters, which will look like real stone but at a fraction of the cost.

* Skip custom cabinetry in lieu of stock units. They’re more attractive than ever before and don’t require the wait time of custom-ordered cabinets.

* Choose less expensive, mid-range appliances that may function better than or equal to high-end models.

* Plan layout accurately and spend time reviewing your designs. Late changes in a remodel can quickly eat up a budget.

* Electrician: An electrician specializes in addressing a building’s or home’s electrical wiring issues, stationary machines and the equipment related to those machines. Electricians can fix existing issues, but many also can design and install new electrical components and systems. The dangers of working with electrical systems are many, so electricians typically must be certified and licensed before they can practice their trade. Such danger is one reason why even those who are adept at fixing problems around the house might want to hire an electrician should an electrical issue arise. * Plumber: A plumber is a professional whose area of expertise is in installing and maintaining systems for drinking water, drainage and sewage. Though not all jurisdictions require a plumber be licensed before he or she can practice, many do, and it can take years of training and experience to master the skill of plumbing. Many people call a plumber when a toilet or sink backs up, but plumbers must have far more extensive skills as well. Plumbers must be skilled in a number of areas, including having an ability to read and understand a home’s blueprints, detect faults in a plumbing system if the homeowner cannot install and repair fixtures and systems, and be aware of any legal requirements to ensure a home is safe.

According to Remodeling magazine’s 2011-2012 “Cost Vs. Value Report,” replacement projects perform better in resale value than other types of remodeling projects. Siding-, window- and door-replacement projects all recoup between 69 and 78 percent of their initial costs. Replacement projects perhaps recoup so much value because, with the exception of roofing projects, each of the projects examined in the report are priced at less than $19,000. Replacement projects also tend to rely heavily on durable, low-maintenance products, reducing the overall cost of the project while helping owners eventually regain more of their investment. In addition, replacement projects are known to instantly increase curb appeal, helping homeowners make a strong first impression with prospective buyers.

* Landscaper: Homeowners have increasingly looked to professional landscapers to maintain their home’s exterior and subsequently ensure their property value remains high. A typical landscaper offers his client an array of services, from cutting the grass to raking leaves to more complicated tasks that gravitate toward landscape architecture. www.hrsconstruction.com • 518-426-4107 Protect Your Home Appliances With An Extended Warranty (NewsUSA) - When major household appliances break, family stress starts to mount. Whether it’s loads of clothes piling up in the laundry room or food spoiling in the refrigerator, the problem is often inconvenient and expensive to fix. And with about half of Americans reporting that they do not have enough savings to achieve financial stability, according to a survey by Hart Research Associates, unexpected repairs can create a financial hardship. That’s why the Service Contract Industry Council (SCIC) urges homeowners to buy extended warranties to reduce repairs and other unanticipated costs. They’re especially beneficial during times of financial uncertainty and flat income growth, protecting your budget against unexpected repair costs and product failure. They also provide support service and routine maintenance that keep your appliances running longer.

The catch to these estimates from the National Association of Home Builders is that most appliances and mechanical systems require regular maintenance. To keep your major appliances working properly, clean your refrigerator coils, check washing machine hoses and empty the ice machine bucket once a month to prevent frosting.

If you’re not diligent about performing such chores, the extended warranty can save you time and hassle. It provides routine maintenance, power surge protection and peace of mind.

No HARD WATER Problem? Think Again!

Assurant Solutions agrees. “Extended warranties essentially pick up where the manufacturer’s warranty leaves off, extending and often boosting coverage,” explains Joe Erdeman, president of extended protection solutions at Assurant Solutions. “When appliances and electronics are upgraded and redesigned every year, they often become more expensive to repair or replace.” For example, repairing the motor for a clothes dryer (depending on the model) could cost an estimated $282. The average service contract or extended warranty for that same dryer costs around $75. A new compressor for a refrigerator could cost anywhere from $568 to $650, compared to a $106 plan with a $25 deductible. No matter the appliance or specific part needing repairs, the warranty is still a better deal.

Generally speaking, major home appliances should last your family a long time. The average dryer should last about 14 years, and the fridge should keep working for at least 17 years. Some kitchen appliances have a shorter lifespan, such as trash compactors, dishwashers and garbage disposals, which last around 10 years.

Those who want a romantic movie to set the mood might CHOOSE OUR REGULAR MENU or SWEETHEART DEALS want to consider the following options. * “Somewhere in Time” (1980): Starring Christopher Reeve, this drama surrounds a Chicago playwright who meets an old woman on the opening night of one of his plays. The woman presses a gold pocket watch into his hand before begging the young playwright to return to her. Years later, the playwright is staying at a hotel and becomes taken with a young woman in a photograph, only to learn that the young woman is the same mysterious older woman who visited on opening night all those years ago. * “West Side Story” (1961): One of Hollywood’s many tales of forbidden love, this classic won Best Picture after being adapted for the big screen. The score alone is enough for film afficionados, but those who also want a story won’t be disappointed by this musical tale of two youngsters who fall in love despite being from rival New York City gangs. * “The Philadelphia Story” (1940): Featuring screen legends Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart, the movie focuses on the complications that arise as a socialite prepares to marry. Cary Grant plays the ex-husband of Hepburn, who must deal with the simultaneous arrival of both Grant and Stewart, a journalist who arrives to get the scoop on her pending nuptials. Stewart earned an Oscar for his performance in the film, which is also credited for helping to revive Hepburn’s career after a series of box office flops. * “Casablanca” (1942): Perhaps no film is more synonymous with romance than this classic starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman as former lovers who reconnect one night in a pressure-packed African encounter during World War II. The two ex-lovers still harbor feelings for one another, though Bergman’s Ilsa has moved on and married a resistance leader who needs the help of Bogart’s Rick to escape Nazi forces hot on his trail. The film features many classic moments. * “The Princess Bride” (1987): Couples who prefer a love story as told through a fairy tale might want to consider this Rob Reiner-directed film starring Cary Elwes as a farm boy who falls in love with Buttercup, the beautiful daughter of his employer. An ensemble cast that memorably includes Billy Crystal, Mandy Patinkin and pro wrestler Andre the Giant contributes to this hilarious classic that follows the farm boy’s heroic efforts to be with the woman he loves.

Did You Know? On average, $400 million in domestically produced cut flowers and $24 million in domestically produced cut roses are sold every year for Valentine's Day. There are roughly 20,000 florists in the United States, many of which are very busy delivering and selling flowers for Valentine's Day. However, Valentine's Day isn't the busiest time for florists. In fact, a greater percentage of fresh flowers and plants are sold during the December holiday season and on Mother's Day (30% and 24%, respectively).

Did You Know? "Love" is a powerful word that describes one of the most potent human emotions. The word is believed to have evolved from the Proto-Indo-European's word "leubh," which described care and desire nearly five thousand years ago. The word was incorporated into Old English as "lufu," a noun meaning "deep affection" and a verb "lufian" meaning "to be very fond of."

Did You Know? Many early Christian martyrs were named Valentine, which can make it confusing when trying to figure out just who is being honored on Valentine’s Day. While there might be many martyrs named Valentine, the two honored on Valentine’s Day are Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni. The former was a Roman priest who was martyred in roughly 269 AD, while the latter was bishop of what is now Terni who was martyred in 197 AD. It was not until the 14th century that any of today’s popular romantic elements began to take shape when celebrating Valentine’s Day. As a result of those new developments, the distinctions between Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni were gradually lost, eventually prompting the feast of St. Valentine on February 14 to be removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969.

Valentine’s Day and chocolate have been linked for some time now, but there really hasn’t been any definitive explanation for just why the delicious confection and the day of love seem to go hand in hand. The average American eats 11 pounds of chocolate every year, a significant percentage of which is enjoyed around Valentine’s Day. The reason people are known to enjoy and crave chocolate may be connected to its chemical components. Chocolate has been known to affect mood in many ways. It contains 380 known chemicals, triggering a host of responses in the brain. Chocolate can trigger the production of opioids, which are chemicals, such as those found in opium, that produce a feeling of well-being (euphoria). Eating chocolate then may make a person feel better, which is why chocolate is often a turnto comfort snack. Chocolate also may work like THC, the chemical components in marijuana, extending the feeling of being “high” or well-being. Chocolate can also increase blood pressure and bloodsugar levels, attributing to feelings of alertness. The caffeine in chocolate also acts as a stimulant. However, the reason chocolate may be snatched up come Valentine’s Day is that chocolate appears to contain phenylalanine, the same chemical that is produced by the brain when people fall in love. Doctors think that eating chocolate creates a temporary “love high.” For those gifting chocolate for Valentine’s Day, consider dark chocolate, which is also high in antioxidants. This chocolate is among the healthier varieties in which to indulge.

Tuesday Evening Book Discussion Group

CLIFTON PARK – The Tuesday Evening Book Discussion Group will meet Tuesday, February 12 at 7pm, at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library. The Book Group will discuss Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger. The story revolves around Valentina and Julia, inseparable, 20-year-old “mirror image” twins, who inherit a flat in London from Elspeth, their mother’s long-estranged twin. Unaware of the painful secret that has kept Edwina and Elspeth apart, Julia and Valentina arrive in London to find Elspeth is still in residence as a meddlesome ghost. Lou Ann Stewart, Adult Services Librarian, will lead the discussion. Registration is requested. Patrons can register online, stop at the Welcome Desk or call the Library at 371-8622. (P)

“It’s a sign of the times…”

MECHANICVILLE – It’s not just a sign of the times … but the sign of the times for the Mechanicville Public Library, with your help. The Library Friends are collecting for an electronic sign to be placed in front of the library to keep everyone updated on library activities. Show your support and come to the library and make a donation of $1 or more, and sign a tag to be added to our sign wall. Make more than one donation and sign a tag for family members, aunt Grace who always read to you, your favorite teacher, memorials to friends and family no longer with us, and don’t forget those loyal family pets that love to sit on your lap while you read! Please help us fill our wall and have the sign ready and up for the end of construction! (A)

(NewsUSA) - Every year, NASCAR fans patiently wait for the Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach, Fla. to see gutsy drivers and unpredictable racing. This year’s 55th anniversary will prove even more surprising with the debut of the Sprint Cup Series Generation-6 race car, replacing the boxy model that’s been racing since 2007, and ignite new, fierce competition from veterans and rookies alike.

Receiving heavy attention is Daytona’s defending champion, Matt Kenseth, who will be driving the new Dollar General No. 20 Toyota Camry as part of the Joe Gibbs Racing team. NASCAR fans are also excited to see traditional favorites, including Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Tony Stewart as excitement builds over newer stars, like Danica Patrick, who posted some of the fastest speeds during preseason test runs.

Like Kenseth’s peers, he’s in for some uncertainty. The Gen6 is supposed to have enhanced safety features after two years of development and help from NASA. Closely resembling a streetcar, it features drivers’ last names on the front windshield, but speculation says the faster car may lead to unpredictable racing while drivers adjust to the new handling conditions. In an early prediction of Daytona’s outcome, Bleacher Report favors vets like Kenseth, Gordon, Earnhardt Jr. or Stewart, assuming they adjust well to the Gen-6 car. Regardless of the winner, Dollar General expects the Daytona 500 to boost interest in NASCAR and invigorate fans, which is reflective of its increased sponsorship in the 2013 Sprint Cup
