STILLWATER - Town of Stillwater Emergency Management Preparedness Committee. Are you ready? Power outages, heavy snows, ice storms, thunderstorms, floods…they can all be scary and create feelings of helplessness. We can’t control the weather, but we can prepare. Creating and maintaining a “ready kit” with essential emergency items offers a measure of calm amid a storm, literally. There are many basic items to consider, and each household can “custom fit” theirs. Excellent checklists are available from the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org or FEMA at www.ready.gov. To learn more about your Stillwater Community Emergency Management Committee, contact Chairman Tom Rinaldi at (518) 944-5263.

We’ll make a display of them in the Teen Place and encourage others to check out the books, based only on the description. Creativity at its best! Registration required. Oftentimes, the right mid-afternoon snack can provide the energy boosts adults need to stay productive throughout the workday. The following are a handful of healthy snacks that tend to provide a lot of energy.

THESE SNACKS PACK AN ENERGETIC PUNCH

* Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt has become increasingly popular in recent years, as more and more people are opting for this snack that’s rich in calcium, protein, phosphorous, and zinc. Traditional yogurt tends to provide a quick energy boost, as it is generally easy to digest, before that boost quickly fades. Greek yogurt is thicker than traditional yogurt, so it does not digest so easily, producing more sustained energy levels as a result. However, Greek yogurt is also loaded with protein, helping men and women feel fuller longer. That can be beneficial for those who want to lose weight, as the feeling of fullness that Greek yogurt provides means those who eat it are less likely to eat more snacks throughout the day. * Whole grains: Whole grain snacks are loaded with energizing ingredients, including fiber, iron, magnesium, and protein. Whole wheat snacks are also loaded with Bvitamins, which help people fight fatigue and stabilize blood sugar levels. In addition, the body takes longer to absorb the complex carbohydrates found in whole wheat snacks, which means the body can maintain stable blood sugar levels for extended periods of time, and that leads to a long-lasting energy boost. White bread and simple carbohydrates provide an immediate, yet temporary, energy boost when people’s blood sugar levels spike. But once that initial energy boost subsides, men and women will be left feeling fatigued.

snack as well. Edamame are boiled soybeans that are rich in protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber. Each of these things helps the body sustain energy levels. In addition, edamame is also packed with a trace mineral known as molybdenum that helps cells function properly while enhancing alertness and improving concentration.

* Almonds: Almonds are loaded with ingredients that increase energy levels, including vitamin E, phosphorous, vitamin B2, and magnesium, which serves numerous beneficial functions, including aiding in the production of energy and relieving stress and anxiety. Because they are rich in protein and fiber, almonds take longer for the body to digest, which means energy levels will stay up for longer periods of time than they would for those snacks that are easily digested. Almonds also contain healthy fats that curb appetite, making it less likely that men and women who snack on almonds will overeat and find themselves fighting the fatigue that’s often a byproduct of overeating.

* Edamame: Many people may know edamame from recipes, but few might know edamame can be an energy-boosting

DID YOU KNOW? People frequently take human hair for granted, especially if they have it in abundance. While hair can help keep your head warm, there’s more to hair than what meets the eye. For a healthy individual with no hair diseases, hair is very strong with enormous tensile strength. In fact, human hair is about as strong as copper wire of the same diameter. That means one strand of hair can support up to 100 grams in weight. Considering the average head of hair contains about 100,000 to 150,000 strands of hair in all, the combined strength of human hair could feasibly support up to 12 tons, or the equivalent of two African elephants.

Kitty

Domestic Short Hair Mix, 5 Year Old Male, White/Black Hi there, my name is Kitty. I’m a handsome puss with a soft white coat that has black spots. I like to be petted, but I’m feeling a little shy right now. I had to come to the shelter because my former family moved and couldn’t take me. I lived with other cats and a dog. I’m going to need a bit of coaxing to help me relax in a new home. Some fun toys will help with that, I’m sure. Then you’ll find me a good guy to have around because I’m really a sweetie.

Songheart

Domestic Short Hair Mix, 2 Year Old Male, White Hello, my name is Songheart and I am a very large white fellow. I’m friendly and vocal, especially when I need some attention. I came to the shelter with three house mates and our story is a sad one. Our family was evicted and they abandoned us. The landlord took us all in for a while, but just couldn’t manage so many animals any more. I really need to lose some weight, so when I’m adopted, you should work with your vet to establish a proper diet for me. I may be big, but I’m still young so if you have lots of toys and we play together that will help me regain my once svelte figure.

GREAT CAR CARE TIPS FOR SENIORS (StatePoint) Car repair and maintenance can put a strain on both a senior’s budget and back. With some smart and simple preventive care, you can reduce automotive troubles down the line. Tread and Tire Pressure The last thing any senior needs is a blown out tire while driving. Avoid this dangerous scenario by checking the tread on your tires and the air pressure once a month. Tires with little or no tread and that are showing threads are unsafe and should be replaced immediately.  For the recommended air pressure for your tires, do not go by the numbers on the sidewall of the tires. Instead, refer to the owner’s manual or sticker on the driver’s side door. Not only does proper air pressure decrease the likelihood of a blowout, but it increases your car’s gas mileage, and gives your vehicle better traction.  Change the Oil The truth is that oil changes take time and money. However, if this task is not done routinely, then the overall health of your engine can be jeopardized. When using conventional oil, it’s recommended to change the oil every 3,000 miles. However you can save yourself some work and better protect your investment by using high-quality synthetic motor oil instead. For example, Royal Purple HMX is specifically designed to minimize wear and tear and restore performance in engines with more than 75,000 miles. Instead of the typical oil change once every 3,000 miles, synthetic oil can reduce the frequency to once every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, or once every 12 months, depending on how much your vehicle is used. For more information on how you can maximize your engine’s longevity and save money, visit www.RoyalPurpleConsumer.com.

Check Lights

Don’t be the one left in the dark. Regularly check your headlights, taillights, turning signals and brake lights. Thousands of accidents a year are the direct result of failed lights. Check your lights by asking a trusted neighbor, friend or family member to walk around your car as you turn the headlights, taillights and turning signals off and on. Also, apply light pressure to the brake to make sure your brake lights are working as well. If a light is out, check the fuses. An easy do-it-yourself replacement can save you time and money.

You don’t have to be a professional mechanic or overextend your budget to increase the lifetime of your car. Some simple proactive and regular care will go a long way in keeping you and your car together, far down the road.

YOU THINK YOU KNOW SNOW? FOLLOW THESE SAFE DRIVING TIPS (NewsUSA) - Winter comes with a unique set of challenges, including lower air temperatures, lack of visibility, fewer daylight hours, falling snow and, of course, icy roads. These can certainly make for some hazardous driving conditions, which is why experts say you should dig out your ice scraper, gloves and snow shovels before hitting the road. “Don’t set off like a tank commander with a tiny hole cleared,” says Andy Smith, a patrolman in Canada. The safest way to prepare for winter driving is to be proactive before an emergency occurs. The following tips will give you some ideas on how to drive safely all winter long: * Surface Conditions. Roads and drive paths are likely to be covered with rain, sleet, snow and ice, which causes slippery driving conditions and reduces tire traction. Consider using snow tires in areas where winter weather is severe. It’s also important to inspect your tires for uneven wear, cupping and proper tread depth. Also consider the last time you had the tires rotated, balanced and aligned. * Emergency Situations. Winter weather increases the chance of getting into a car accident. Pack an emergency kit to leave in your vehicle at all times. Consider including safety items such as flares, medical supplies, jumper cables, a flash light, batteries, a small shovel and tire chains. Also consider comfort items like blankets, gloves and snacks.

* Clear Vision. Snow, ice and fog diminish your visibility, creating dangerous driving conditions. Remove all debris from your windshield, windows and outside mirrors before driving.

Replace your wiper blades with extreme-weather blades for a stronger wipe to battle heavy rain, snow and ice buildup. The TRICO Ice wiper blade (www.tricoproducts.com) is designed to distribute even pressure for a clearer wipe, while the contour complements new vehicle models and maximizes your line of sight.

* Vehicle Performance. Follow the recommended maintenance schedule in your vehicle’s owner’s manual to avoid hard starts, stalling and lost power during colder weather. Keep your gas tank above the halfway mark because empty tanks collect condensation, which damages the engine.

Some regions experience heavy snow and dangerous ice storms, others find an increase in rainy conditions, and in some places, temperatures may just cool down a bit. Regardless of location, the winter season brings a climate change that all drivers should consider.

Governor’s Speech Encourages Celebrations of Diverse Heritage Last week was quite interesting because I had the chance to spend the better part of two days in the presence of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, plus senior business and government leaders. It was interesting, enlightening and informative. He had a lot to say, on subjects ranging from taxes and regulation to casinos, marijuana and gender equality. As the post-speech coverage has illustrated, many different opinions have been formed among those who heard Pete Bardunias, it, and most people will probably have points they President/CEO, the Chamber liked and others they were less enthusiastic about. of Southern Saratoga County But there’s one part I really was motivated by: his comments about New York’s unique and diverse heritage. He remarked that New York has historically embraced diversity, and as I sat there, surrounded by people of many ethnic and religious backgrounds, I thought of my own heritage. Being of mixed European descent, I am a product of the diverse culture that has made New York so great. Tech Valley is home to immigrants from all over the world who are here to build and operate our semiconductor factories and other global industries, so we will be introduced to even more cultures, traditions and viewpoints. We all have something to contribute to our community, and should learn how to effectively participate in our communities and in our political process. Now is the time to get involved and help to improve our hometowns, and also to experience, respect and learn from those who come from different backgrounds. The Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa has genealogy exhibits plus numerous video oral histories called “The Changing Face of Tech Valley.” To honor our county’s heritage, the Chamber’s Saratoga County Community Development Program is doing painting and cleanup work at the Museum on Martin Luther King Day, January 20 from 10AM3PM. To volunteer please call us at (518) 371-7748 or email pete@southernsaratoga.org .
