Arts Council Exhibition at the Gallery

CLIFTON PARK – A Saratoga County Arts Council “Art in Public Places” Exhibition is on display in the 2nd floor Gallery at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library, for the month of August 2012. Featured is the textile and quilt work of the Quilt North Guild. The title of the exhibit is Small Works. This exhibit showcases smaller “wall” size quilts, as compared to the traditional “bed” size quilts, which our members create. The quilts show a range of skills and interests, from traditional table linens to artistic surfaces that might be more at home in a gallery setting. Piecing, appliqué, hand and machine quilting, dyeing, painting, embroidery all have a place in contemporary quilt making. (P)

Youth Pipe Band to Compete in Glasgow, Scotland CAPITAL REGION – Twenty-five members of the ScotiaGlenville Pipe Band are returning to “The World’s” for the third time to compete in The World Pipe Band Championships on August 11. Coming from around the Capital District as well as the Northeast, the Band is strongly positioned to qualify for the Final Round and make the prize list. The Band will have two competitions in Scotland before the World Championships. The Band is comprised of local and regional talent, with some members traveling from New Jersey and Massachusetts in order to participate in this unique pipe band and represent the United States at “Bagpiping’s Olympics.” The Scotia Glenville Pipe Band is a non-profit organization and donations are always appreciated to help the band pay for the trip to appear on Glasgow Green in August. In Scotland, the Band will be able to compete against juvenile bands from around the world – a rarity on this side of the Atlantic. In the United States, there are few juvenile bands – whose members can only be 18 years old or younger – so on summer weekends these teenagers compete against adults head to head. For more information on the Scotia Glenville Pipe Band, visit the website at For more information on the World Pipe Band Championships, visit their website at (P)

Goldstein Auto Group Partners With Mohawk Hudson Humane Society for “Empties For Animals” Campaign Campaign Donations Up 45% During First Quarter of 2012

Albany, NY (April 23, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Goldstein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mission of the organization, including sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the prevention of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Empties For Animals” campaign has raised $20,694 during the first quarter, an increase of $6,500 or 45% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total of more than $74,000 and collected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating distributor, which in turn generated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our customers and the members of the community who Greg Goldstein from have generously donated to such a Goldstein Buick-GMC with a truck full worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, of bottles to be delivered to the President of Goldstein Auto Group. Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.

The bottles can be dropped off at any of the four Goldstein Auto Group locations: ~ Goldstein Buick/GMC, 1671 Central Avenue, Albany ~ ~ Goldstein Chrysler Jeep Dodge, 613 Loudon Rd, Latham ~ ~ Goldstein Subaru, 1754 Central Avenue, Albany ~ ~ Goldstein Mitsubishi, 1673 Central Avenue, Albany ~ If you have a large amount of cans or bottles to donate, please call Stefanie Goldstein at (518) 869-1250 to arrange a pick up.

Selling Your House: Which 'Fixes' Are Worth It to Lure Buyers?

If you're one of those homeowners who's been moaning about how hard it's been trying to sell your house, your bargaining power -- you remember that concept, right? -- hasn't been completely devastated just because a flood of new foreclosures is expected to hit the market as a result of the recent $25 billion "robo-signing" mortgage settlement. In fact, while studies have shown your own property value could take up to another 4 percent hit if you're within a quarter mile of a foreclosure ultimately snapped up at auction or taken back by the lender, the thing to remember is this: Most buyers today are only interested in homes that are "move-in-ready," so if yours isn't ... well, there's your problem.

"Buyers generally look at 'as-is' properties that need work, and say 'I'll pass,'" says Patsy O'Neill, a sales associate with Sotheby's in Montclair, N.J. "That's why I tell clients it's worth making certain strategic fixes if they're looking for quicker and more profitable sales."

So, which "fixes" are worth it, and which aren't? Read on:

Worth It: Addressing major maintenance and safety issues. Would you buy a house with faulty electrical wiring? Enough said.

Not Worth It: Major bath renovations. "Whatever you do might not suit the buyer," says O'Neill, "and meanwhile, you'd have spent as much as tens of thousands of dollars." Meaning, stick to things like repairing cracked shower doors, and save your visions of a modern-day spa for your own new abode.

Worth It: Ripping up old carpeting. Whether you replace it with new carpets or refinish the underlying wood floor is less important than getting rid of an eyesore.

Not Worth It: Major kitchen renovations. Same "taste" issue as above.

Worth It: Anything that enhances "curb appeal." If the first thing prospective buyers notice even before exiting their cars is that your roof looks like it's been whipped by a tornado, say, chances are you've already lost the sale. "It's a huge turn-off," says O'Neill, "and makes buyers predisposed to find even more things they don't like." So, if your roof needs replacing, check out the Value Collection Lifetime Designer Shingles from GAF (the largest roofing manufacturer in North America), which have the look of luxury shingles but at very affordable prices (www.gaf. com). Not Worth It: Anything that screams clutter. The less of "you" there is, the more likely prospective buyers are to imagine themselves happily living there.

Get Better Gas Mileage With New Technology

(NewsUSA) - Gas prices are getting as dangerously high as unemployment rates, and both mean a whole new level of penny pinching for the nation's 99 percent.

As drivers spend about $4 per gallon, finding ways to get better gas mileage is more important than ever. Fortunately, affordable technology is finally catching up to the escalating problem. Some auto companies are trying to ease the burden of astronomical gas prices by improving technology and making it accessible. Vision Motor Company is priming its widespread release of alternative vehicles using compressed natural gas (CNG), which can cut fuel costs by up to 80 percent. Besides polluting as

much as 90 percent less than traditional gasoline, natural gas vehicles can get 45 miles per gallon on CNG fuel.

But, according to Vision chairman Bob Smith, new fuel-efficient spark plugs called Pulstar Pulse Plugs have truly enabled the newest car, SEERngv, to go mainstream. The Enerpulse Precision Combustion Ignition (PCI) technology in Pulstar Pulse Plugs also increases miles per gallon and significantly reduces hydrocarbon emissions. "Combustion stability at idle and cold start was also improved," explained Smith. "VMC is very excited to offer this valueadded technology." If you're not yet able to benefit from natural gas vehicles and other enhanced technology, there are more ways to conserve fuel and increase efficiency.

* Install new spark plugs. For the average car, installing quality spark plugs -- like Pulstar Pulse Plugs -- can make your vehicle perform better than new, mileage included.

* Choose routes carefully. The shortest route may not be the most fuel efficient if it's littered with stoplights and traffic. Avoid traffic lights if possible, but if not, shifting into neutral will give your transmission a break. * Replace air filters. You probably don't need to replace the air filter as often as mechanics suggest, but keep an eye on it. Filters tend to last 20,000 or 30,000 miles, and a clean filter can improve mileage by 10 percent. * Drive smoothly. We know you're not going to slow down, but sudden starts, stops and jerky driving hinder fuel economy. Slamming on the brakes wears down break pads and forces you to accelerate more, adding as much as one-third to your gas bill. Get more help increasing fuel economy at or
