Haley is one lucky kitty! He was found by someone in the middle of Route 50! She thought he was dead but no- alive but with a leg broken in 2 places. She called HOPE and we took him in. He is the nicest cat! He purrs all the time, even when receiving vaccinations! He's about 1-2 years old, neutered and declawed, and strangely nobody has claimed him. He is available for adoption, but will need regular splint changes until the leg heals. Haley will make a wonderful, mellow companion! One of our students says, “I have often heard that knowledge is power.  Until recently, I did not know what that meant.  Knowledge gives you the power to lend a hand to those in need, not only financially, but through support and guidance.  I have a mentor who has helped me tremendously with achieving my aspirations and preparing me for the future.  I plan to one day follow in the footsteps of my mentor and help other young women.  It is my belief that success is of no importance unless you use it towards the benefit of others.” You can learn more about I am I can on our website at www.iamicanachieve.org or by contacting our founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010  ext 102. We’ll see you there!

Summer Lunch Program

BALLSTON SPA - The members of The First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa and Ballston Spa United Methodist Church are actively preparing for their 2013 Summer Lunch Program. This program is designed to provide free lunches to families in need. This program has served the local Village of Ballston Spa for the past two years. With the help of generous grants from Stewarts, Walmart and donations from local businesses and organizations we are able to continue this program into its third year. 40-75 lunches are served Monday thru Friday, July and August. Time-Saving Cleaning Tricks

House cleaning is a chore few people relish. House cleaning can be monotonous and time-consuming. But ignoring cleaning tasks may leave you with a much larger mess to tackle. Cleaning does not have to be such a difficult job. There are a number of time-saving strategies to keep the mess to a minimum and keep your weekend afternoons free from all-day cleaning marathons. * Do the dishes after every meal. A sink full of dishes can make the kitchen look like a mess, and letting dishes pile up increases the risk of an insect infestation. Although it may seem like a chore, keeping on top of dishes actually reduces your workload. If you’re lucky enough to have an automatic dishwasher, then load dishes directly into the dishwasher instead of putting dirty items into the sink. * Protect your microwave. The inside of the microwave tends to get dirty rather quickly. Heating up snacks or quick meals may result in spill-overs or splatter. To cut down on cleaning time, stack several paper towels on the turntable. Should a spill occur, simply discard the top paper towel for an easy clean-up. * Switch your soap. Glycerin or liquid soaps do not have traditional binders that are in many bar soaps. Without the binders, which are the primary cause of soap scum, you will have to contend with much less soap scum in showers and Saving vacuuming for last means you sinks. To further cut down on soap scum, use a small, flexwon’t be cleaning dust that settled ible squeegee to wipe down tile walls and glass doors after while dusting or wiping down items each shower. twice.

* Work from the top down. Dust and dirt settles at the lowest levels. Avoid messing up what you have just cleaned by beginning any cleaning task high up and moving downward. The Pearce Family’s Therefore, dust shelves and cobwebs from ceiling corners first, then tackle tables and other surfaces before ultimately cleaning the floors.

* Concentrate on one room at a time. Some people suffer from cleaning attention deficit disorder. This means they’ll begin one task and then go into another room for something and start a new task, and so on. Focus on one room at a time to save time. You will do a more thorough job with less frustration. * Establish a drop zone. Foyers tend to accumulate a lot of clutter. Organize the space so you’re less tempted to drop

items as soon as you come in. Keep the recycling bin (or shredder) handy for dealing with junk mail. Have a coat rack for hats, coats and umbrellas. Keep a basket available so you can transport items that belong in other rooms in the house.

* Do laundry every day. Invest in a hamper that enables you to sort clothing into different compartments, including lights, darks and delicates. This way the sorting is already done when it comes time for washing. Then aim to do a load a day so that you’re not faced with 100 pounds of laundry come the weekend. * Rely on baking soda and vinegar as cleaning products. These kitchen staples are the workhorses of many cleaning projects. A mix of baking soda and vinegar can dislodge a clogged drain and be added to a wash to freshen towels and linens. A paste of baking soda can often scour tough stains, like marker, while vinegar has been known to neutralize pet odors from accidents. * Think outside the box. A can of Coca-Cola can be effective at cleaning the ring in the toilet. An unsweetened package of Kool-Aid brand lemonade can be used to freshen and clean an empty dishwasher. The citric acid will scour the inside and get rid of any scaling or hard water stains.

Cleaning is a task that may not be enjoyable, but it is a necessary evil of healthy living. Keeping on top of the mess can save time in the long run.

Faulty underwater lighting, appliances that fall into the water and aging wiring can result in electrocution. The CPSCnotes that suction from a pool or spa drain is also potentially hazardous. The majority of suction accidents involved children, but suction can hold an adult underwater. There have even been cases of people being disemboweled from pool drains. Installing a safety vacuum release system that turns off the pool pump when a drain is blocked can prevent entrapment.

* Flooding: Super storms have been wreaking havoc on many areas of the country. Flooding is a common side effect of strong rains and high tides, and the aftermath of a flood can turn a home from a haven into a hazard. Microorganisms in flood waters may contaminate drinking water, and wet walls and floors can present a breeding ground for insects, pests and microorganisms like mold and mildew. The National Safety Council says microorganisms can penetrate into soaked, porous materials and later be released into the air and inhaled. Flooding also may lead to weakened or rotted floorboards.

* Fire: Home fire injuries are highest among seniors and children under the age of five. In addition, home fires are a leading cause of emergency room visits. Smoke alarms on every level of the house can alert to danger, but ensuring candles are extinguished and electrical wiring is up to date and making sure space heaters and other appliances are not left unattended can help prevent fires.

* Magnets: Very small magnets are popular in jewelry, toys, building sets, and more. The number of products with strong magnets has increased, which may pose significant safety threats to children. The CPSC says that magnets have contributed to one death and 86 injuries since 2005. Eight million magnetic toys have been recalled. * Garage doors: The CPSC says an average of 20,000 people each year are treated in the hospital for injuries caused by garage doors. From fingers and toes getting trapped to heavy doors falling on children and adults, garage doors can cause serious injury.

How To Prep Your Yard For Summer Parties Backyard soirees are a staple of summer for many families. Whether hosting a family reunion, a gathering of friends or a mix of both, such gatherings can be a great time to reconnect with your loved ones in a relaxing and natural setting. Hosting such gatherings might not require as much work as organizing a more formal get-together, but that doesn’t mean summer soirees don’t require a little work in advance of the guests’ arrival. That’s especially true if you plan to host the party outdoors in your yard, which will need a little TLC before guests arrive. The following are a few tips to get your yard ready before your next summer soiree. * Cut the grass and clear your walkways. Cutting the grass before guests arrive might seem like common sense, but try to do so a couple of days before the party. This gives you an extra day or so to clear the walkways of grass clippings, and it saves you the trouble of cutting the grass on the day of the party when you’re likely to have more pressing tasks to take care of. * Decorate your yard. Decorations are a staple of parties held indoors, so why not decorate your home’s exterior when hosting a get-together in the backyard? Use freshly cut flowers from your own garden as centerpieces on your patio furniture, or purchase flowers of various colors from your local florist to add a dash or two of color to the festivities. * Clear the yard of toys. Before guests arrive, clear the yard of the kids’ toys, putting them away so guests don’t injure themselves by stepping on errant action Before hosting a summer soiree, hosts figures or skateboards must survey their property to ensure it’s left hidden in the grass. safe and sound for their guests.

Stamped concrete is the affordable choice for an upscale finish, providing a genuine appearance with the durability you desire.

info@hoffmanstampedconcrete.com * Trim trees and shrubs around walkways. While a backyard barbecue is less formal than a party held indoors, you still want your home to be as accommodating as possible for your guests. Don’t forget to trim trees and shrubs around the walkways so guests don’t feel like they’re on safari when coming to and from the backyard. * Make sure outdoor lighting is working properly. If you’re about to host your first event of the summer, inspect your home’s exterior lighting so everyone isn’t left sitting in the dark. Check patio lighting and replace any bulbs and make sure the lights along your walkways are functioning at full capacity so guests can safely navigate their way around the party. You may even want to string holiday lights around the patio to create a more laid-back ambiance in which guests can relax without lights beating down on them.

* Protect your guests from insects. Insects like mosquitoes can quickly turn a swinging soiree into a nuisance, so purchase some decorative citronella candles to repel mosquitoes. Tiki torches along walkways and around the patio furniture may also prove effective insect repellants. In addition, if there are any areas around your property where water has gathered, such as bird fountains or puddles from recent rains, do your best to get rid of that water. Water attracts many insects, which lay their eggs in the standing water. The less standing water around your property, the less likely any uninvited insect guests are to appear.

Backyard gatherings are a staple of summer. But even if such soirees are less formal, hosts still must survey their property and address any issues before guests arrive.

Color Underfoot By Tresa Erickson It’s been quite some time since you’ve bought new carpeting for your home, and it is starting to show. What was once soft and stain free is no longer. It’s time you replaced the carpeting, and while there are many factors to consider from pile cut to

fiber to performance rating, the one that has got you stumped is color. You know you don’t want white or black carpeting, but beyond that, you have no idea. Carpeting can be costly, and once you purchase it and arrange to have it installed, there’s usually no turning back. You’re stuck with the color you selected, so it better be right. Here are

some tips to help you through the color dilemma. What is the size of the space? Generally, lighter colors open up a space, while darker colors close it in, making for a cozier feel. While dark colored carpeting will hide more stains, it could make your small spaces appear even smaller.

How much traffic does the space receive? While lighter colors are more easily soiled than darker colors; darker colors will show dust and lint. If the room(s) where you are replacing the carpet receives a lot of use, you might want to consider a color in the medium range to minimize the appearance of dust, dirt and lint.

What is the purpose of the space? Bright-colored carpeting might prove a real distraction in a room intended for work or relaxation such as a home office or bedroom. It might do wonders, however, in a playroom or workout space, adding to the energetic feel.

How is the space designed? If you are satisfied with the design and plan to live with it for a long time to come, you might want to choose carpeting that will enhance it, such as an Oriental patterned carpet for an Asian-inspired dining room. If, on the other hand, you like to change things up, then you might to opt for a neutral colored carpet. That way, you won’t have to worry about designing around the carpeting. You can just add an Oriental rug on top and switch it out when ready.

What kind of flow do you want to create in the space? Some people want a continuous flow from room to room, and flooring is one of the best ways to create this. If you have wall-to-wall carpeting throughout your home and you want to keep the flow continuous, stick to one color like tan or gray to create a neutral backdrop. Just make sure the color you select varies somewhat from that of the walls and furniture, else you will end up with one big box.

Most importantly, what color do you like? It won’t matter how attractive that silvery gray carpet looks in your home if you hate it. Choose a color that appeals to you that you can live with for a long time to come. Take home samples and review them at various times of the day in different types of light to get a real sense of how they will look in your home. What looks like an elephant gray at the store may look more like a pewter in your home. Know what you are getting and choose the color of carpeting that will best serve your needs today and for many tomorrows to come.

Carpenter Wanted By Tresa Erickson You are a do-it-yourselfer. You enjoy tackling projects around the house and spend many weekends doing so. While you are skilled in many areas, you most certainly are not a carpenter. You can't cut a piece of wood straight, much less make the cabinets you need to house the entertainment components in your family room. You need a carpenter. Carpenters generally fall into two categories: rough or finish. Rough carpenters specialize in building homes, particularly in framing them and making sure everything is level, square and plumb. Finish carpenters specialize in the detail work, installing trim, banisters and the like. Some finish carpenters specialize in building cabinets and furniture. They are known as cabinetmakers. Since you are interested in cabinets, you might want to look for a cabinetmaker or a finish carpenter who has experience in building cabinets. You should treat the process for hiring a carpenter just like you would for any other professional. Ask family and friends for recommendations, browse through listings in the newspaper and phone book, and check online. From these sources, draw up a list of potential candidates. Conduct phone interviews and find out about the carpenter's skills, qualifications, availability and fees. Discuss the work you would like to have done and see if they are interested.

The information you gather from your phone interviews should help you narrow your list considerably. Then you can meet with each candidate face to face and find out more. Make sure you ask to see a sample of their work and get a list of references. Check out the references and find out what the customer did and did not like about the carpenter's work. Discuss with the carpenter again the work you would like to have done and ask

Page 15

them to give you an estimate in writing.

Once you find a carpenter you like, hire them and ask them to write up a contract for the work. This will ensure there are no misunderstandings. Work out a schedule with the carpenter and keep in contact with them to ensure they meet your expectations.

Ivy Issues By Tresa Erickson Storybook pages are filled with images of stone cottages covered in ivy, making them appealing to the young and old alike. Who wouldn’t enjoy coming home to an old English cottage wrapped in ivy? Long, tender, green tendrils trailing down the side of a home can make for a lovely scene. Upon closer inspection of the crumbling mortar underneath, however, you might see that the old adage, “Looks can be deceiving,” is true. If not attended to carefully, ivy can make for some real damage to homes.

Ivy in general is a very tenacious, invasive plant. Once it starts growing, it can be difficult to stop, and once it gets its claws into the cracks and crevices of your home’s exterior, it can be very hard to remove. Ivy has been known to push its way into the smallest of spaces in brick mortar, siding, stucco and more, penetrating walls and windows, invading rooms and peeking out from behind electrical sockets. While it will push through cracks and crevices, ivy is not strong enough to make them. Solid, well-constructed surfaces such as masonry walls can handle it. Old, weak brick, dry-stacked walls, porous wood and any other areas prone to cracks and crevices, on the other hand, cannot. Such substances are highly susceptible to ivy, and once it takes hold and weaves its way throughout the structure, the damage can be vast, ranging from leaks to pest infestation to total loss. Pulling down the ivy may not be the right fix either. While it will prevent further growth, it may also lead to even greater damage. Boards, bricks, chunks of paint and stucco and who knows what else have been known to come down with every strand of ivy pulled. Entire wood structures have fallen down once the ivy holding them together was removed. Homeowners that suspect damage due to ivy should not undertake the removal of it themselves. They should hire a professional to determine the best way to remove the ivy with the least amount of damage possible. They might also be able to repair any resulting damage. There is nothing wrong with having ivy in the landscape. It is best to contain it to well-constructed structures and keep it away from all gutters, trim and woodwork in general. Only then can homeowners rest assured that the ivy will not take a toll on the condition of their home.

Did You Know?

More and more homeowners embracing a relatively new way to shower. Walk-in, or walk-behind, showers are doorless structures that are designed to give the shower a more open look. Walk-in showers are often appear larger than more traditional showers, and those that do take up more space do so to prevent water from spraying around the room. Though walk-in showers do not have doors, they do employ a glass partition to keep water in. Walk-in showers often give a bathroom a more modern look, but their role is more than aesthetic. In fact, many seniors find it is easier to get in and out of a walk-in shower, something that could reduce their risk of falling and suffering an injury.

By Tresa Erickson You've always lived in a small home and loved it. With far less house and yard to care for, you've had more time to devote to other interests. Now that you're adding to your family, however, you're not sure if you can continue to enjoy the perks of small home living. Relax. Unless your family is growing substantially larger, you can remain where you are and make a few changes to maximize your home's potential. Storage can be a problem in any size of home. If your small home lacks storage space, consider creating some built-ins. Built-in bookshelves, cabinets and seating make wonderful additions to any home. You just need to place them in the best area possible and be careful not to take up too much floor space. In a home lacking in square footage, multipurpose is the name of the game. Make sure your rooms serve more than one purpose. Tuck a desk in the corner of your dining room and use the space to eat and work in. Slide your upright piano into your entryway and use the space as a foyer and a music room. Add a bench to your second floor landing and use the space for reading. The same principle applies to your furniture choices. Don't bring a piece into your home unless it can serve more than one purpose. Consider a sleeper sofa for your living room. You can sit on it during the day and use it for guests at night. Select a comfortable chair for your desk. You can sit in it and work at your desk and slide it into the living room when needed for extra seating. Switch out your coffee table for an ottoman. You can use it as a footrest when watching TV and as extra seating when company comes over. Select smaller equipment and accessories. Trade out your bulky TV and computer monitor for flat-screen models. Use hanging bedside lamps rather than large tableside lamps. Choose smaller appliances for your kitchen. You will be amazed at how much more room you have just by using smaller items.

Keep your color palette light. Dark colors tend to close in the space, while lighter colors keep it bright and airy. Reserve darker, bolder colors for accents to add drama and depth. Add to your square footage with an outdoor space. Power-wash that old patio, add some new furniture and plants, and presto, you have extended your living area outdoors. Throw open the French doors during parties and give guests plenty of room to mingle. If you long to stay where you are, don't let the thought of a larger family prevent you from doing so. Make adjustments as needed and make your home work for you.

How To Clean Your Grill

Little House, Big Perks

Light up the rooms in your home and make them appear larger. Use a variety of lighting sources at various heights around each room. Throw open the drapes during the day and let the natural light in. Bring in some mirrors to reflect light around each room.

Grilling is a summertime tradition at households across the country. The family grillmaster typically looks forward to a night spent preparing a perfectly grilled meal for his or her family. But few grillmasters look forward to cleaning the grill, a necessary step to ensure your next grilled meal is as safe as your last one was delicious. If cleaning the grill is a chore, then at least it is one of the easier chores around the house. All it takes is some routine maintenance to keep a grill clean and safe, and such maintenance need not take much time.

* Brush the grates with a brass wire brush. The surfaces of the grill are best cleaned with a brass wire brush, which can quickly and effectively remove leftover food and marinade from the grill while preventing the growth of bacteria. Soak the brush in hot, soapy water once the grill has been cleaned, and keep the brush indoors to keep it from succumbing to the elements. * Prevent rust. Spraying the grill with cooking oil after it has been cleaned can prevent unsightly and potentially unhealthy rust from forming over the life of your grill. This will increase your grill's life expectancy and give your family members and guests some peace of mind knowing the grill is bacteria-free and well-maintained. * Clean the grease traps. Grease traps can be a fire hazard, especially if they are not routinely cleaned. Grease is very flammable, and it can easily increase the temperatures on the grill's surfaces. Ridding a grill of grease might require a little elbow grease of your own, but it's worth the effort to reduce your risk of fire.

* Dump the coals. Charcoal grills might not be as widely used as gas grills, but traditionalists who have stayed loyal to charcoal must dump the coals once the night has ended. Give the coals ample time to cool, shutting off oxygen to the grill to speed up the process, and make sure there are no coals still burning before you discard them.

New Roof Needed By Tresa Erickson When you bought your home some years ago, you gave little thought to the roof. It was in good condition, which the inspector confirmed, and that was the last time you gave it any thought until now. Time has taken its toll on your roof, and leaks have started to occur. You could patch it, but the best course of action would be to get a new roof. Depending upon where you live and the style of your house, your old roof could be made of various materials. Asphalt is the most common and can be found on roofs all over the country. Older, more rustic homes may have wood shakes, while Span-

ish- and Italian-style homes may have clay tiles. If you live on the East Coast in a historic home, your roof may be slate. If you live in a Victorian or contemporary-style home, your roof may be metal. If you live on the beach, you may have a fiber cement roof, which can withstand the salty air and winds. In the majority of cases, homeowners select the same material for their new roof as before. That way, they can stay true to the style of their home. Sometimes, however, it may make better sense to switch materials. Although cheaper, asphalt would not look right on a Spanish-style house with an original tile roof. However, if you live in an older home with a slate roof, you may want to go for a less expensive asphalt roof, which is lighter and easier to maintain. To determine the route you should go, speak to your roofer. They should be able to advise you on the best choice of roofing material for your area and style of home. If you're handy, you may be able to replace your roof yourself. Most homeowners, however, find that it is easier to hire a roofer. If you choose this option, make sure you shop around. Don't

Sparkling Clean By Tresa Erickson

You love all of the marble in your bathroom. It makes you feel like you are living in the lap of luxury. After many years of use, however, the marble has gotten a little grungy. A simple wipedown isn't going to do the trick anymore.

Porous by nature, marble gets dirty easily. Washing it regularly with lukewarm water is a must. Sometimes, however, it may need a deeper cleaning. Depending upon the condition of the marble, you may either use a homemade cleaner or a commercial cleaner. If it is just plain dirty, a bucket of warm, soapy water will suffice. Just wash the marble with a cloth, rinse it and wipe it dry. If it is dull, you will need a commercial cleaner. Look for one from a company that specializes in marble and read and follow the manufacturer's directions.

Because the marble is in your bathroom, which you use a lot, you may want to apply a coat of wax to it. This will seal the pores and prevent dirt from seeping into them. Look for a colorless wax. This will keep the marble from yellowing. Apply the wax according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Once the marble has been cleaned and protected, you should do your best to keep it in good condition. Wipe it down regularly with a warm cloth and clean up spills immediately to prevent staining. Keep acidic and coarse substances away from the marble. Use coasters for drinks and rugs to catch dirt and sand from feet. You don't want to stain or scratch the marble permanently.

Take the time to deep clean the marble in your bathroom and make it sparkle once again. With a little bit of elbow grease, you'll feel like your bathroom has just undergone a remodel and is brand-spanking new.

With the local corn season finally upon us, I feel that it is about time, once again, to spread the word about how to properly prepare fresh sweet corn. If you’ve already read this, then take it a reminder. If not, then you’re about to learn something that will sweeten your summer. It looks as though our local farmers got the corn planted at the right time, and the weather this year has been perfect…it looks as though it is actually ahead of schedule. This is all good news to me since last year was such a disappointing year for sweet corn. I really look forward to fresh, locally grown sweet corn. I recently had some “grocery corn” and it wasn’t too bad, but only because I have nothing local to compare it to yet. Fresh, locally grown sweet corn is a delicacy that, until you leave the area, you don’t appreciate. I remember when I was going to visit my sister in California, I asked her if she wanted me to bring anything. She suggested some New York sweet corn that she remembered so fondly. So, I stopped at my favorite farm stand on the way to the airport and filled a large duffel bag with 4 dozen ears of fresh picked sweet corn. I knew it was fresh picked because I had to mind the farm stand while the farmer went out into the field to fill my duffel bag with corn right off the stalks. It doesn’t get much fresher than that! My sister and all her friends that she invited to lunch the next day were thrilled with this rare treat from Upstate New York. Many of them had never had “real” sweet corn and soon understood our passion. Get ready to enjoy it folks because it will soon arrive at your local farm stand. I usually wait until later to pass on my advice about how this delicacy should be prepared. I think I’ll do it now, at the beginning of the “corn season” so you ALL can try these methods and enjoy PROPERLY cooked sweet corn for the entire season. Regular readers have seen this before and know that I’m a bit fussy about how corn is cooked (almost as much of a fanatic as I am about not spraying your gardens with water) but I’m determined to spread the word. So, if you’ve seen this before, just bear with me. First, get the freshest corn you can find. If you don’t grow your own, get it from the busiest farm stand in your area. The most popular, busiest stand is going to be picking more frequently, insuring that the corn you buy was probably picked within the last few hours. Don’t be shy; ask when the corn was picked. Freshness is important because the simple sugars in the corn start to break down into starch VERY quickly once picked. If you are planning on having corn with dinner tomorrow, don’t buy it today. Buy it tomorrow in the afternoon. Get it into the ‘fridge as soon as you get it home to keep it fresh and sweet. Corn is the sweetest it will be BEFORE you cook it. Knowing this, we want to cook our corn as little as possible. When you’re ready to dine, shuck the corn and place it into COLD water and cook over high heat so the water boils as quickly as possible. The INSTANT the water boils, the corn is done. Drain all the water off and cover the pot to keep the corn warm between helpings. It’s a sad sight to see corn bobbing around in hot water getting soggy and starchy as it continues to overcook. There’s another way to cook corn that I love. Soak the unshucked corn in cold water for a few minutes. Place the corn on your grill or into the coals of a campfire. Rotate the ears frequently so that it cooks evenly. Cook until the husk on one side of the corn is just starting to burn through to the kernels. If some of the kernels get caramelized by the fire, so much the better as long as they don’t get burnt. Shucking these fire-cooked ears of corn can be challenging but well worth it. All that’s left is to add a little butter (the real thing of course) and I like a dash of pepper on mine. Skip the salt so you can enjoy the flavor of the corn. Besides, real butter has enough salt in it anyway. I know there are some folks out there who believe that corn MUST be boiled for several minutes. WRONG! If you don’t believe me, try cooking some my way along with some boiled to death and you’ll see. I had a reader who learned this method from me a couple of years ago and was so impressed that she actually called to thank me. Try it. The only problem is you’ll never be satisfied with soggy, overcooked corn again. Thanks for the read.

Recently Retired And Looking for Meaningful Volunteer Work?

SARATOGA REGION - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are a recently retired woman looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email Avon@scherffinsurance.com.

Worship Services

BALLSTON SPA - The First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa gather for Sunday worship at 10:30 a.m. September through June. In the summer months Sunday worship time is at 9:00 a.m. (June 23 – Sept. 8, 2013). September through June there is Sunday School for all ages every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Childcare is available. Please contact the church for more detailed information, 8858361, info@bspabaptist.org, or check our website www.bspabaptist.org.

Interested In Opening Your Home To An International Student?

CAPITAL REGION - The International Center is seeking local host families for high school foreign exchange students from Eurasia for the 2013-14 academic year. Host families can include single parents, retirees, empty nesters, individuals, domestic partners, couples with no children, or parents with young or teenage children. Hosts need only to provide a bed, a quiet place to study, meals, and transportation to/from school activities. For information on this U.S. Department of State sponsored opportunity, call the International Center of the Capital Region at 518-588-8947 or email CLeising@ICCRAlbany.org. Create a bond that spans the globe and lasts for generations!

Did You Know? According to the Federal Trade Commission, auto dealerships are not legally obligated to give preowned car buyers a three-day right to cancel their purchase. This means a sale is final once a preowned vehicle buyer signs all of the necessary documents. However, some dealerships do offer a return policy, though that offer will likely not be made unless the buyer inquires about it. When a dealer does provide the privilege of returning the vehicle in 72 hours, the policy may be referred to as a “money-back guarantee” or a “no questions asked return policy.” While many dealers are trustworthy and willing to work with their prospective customers, the FTC recommends all buyers contact their local consumer protection agency and state attorney general to determine if there are any unresolved complaints on file with regard to a particular auto dealer. This can help buyers find a reputable dealer and give the buyers some additional peace of mind, especially for those shopping for preowned vehicles that tend to carry more risk than a brand new car.

ness under his protection. The actor did much of the driving of the ‘68 Mustang in this movie, leaving only the riskiest maneuvers to his stunt double. American Graffiti (1973): A coming of age movie set in the 1960s about four teenagers going off to college. They spend one last summer cruising the Sunset Strip and getting into trouble. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford and Ron Howard, this classic was directed by George Lucas of “Star Wars” fame. The Cannonball Run (1983): Eccentric competitors engage in an illegal cross-country car race. A who’s who of stars, including Burt Reynolds, Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, and Dean Martin star in this action-packed flick. Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000): A retired car thief must get back into the business, stealing 50 cars in one night to save the life of his brother. Stars Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie. The Fast and the Furious (2001): An undercover cop infiltrates the underbelly of Los Angeles street racers. This movie spawned a series of sequels with more automotive special effects than substance.
