Heading for Home: Birdies and Brews Golf Event

CROSSWORD

by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

Joseph Battaglia has been a fan of both thoroughbred and standardbred horseracing his whole life. The president of Heading for Home Racehorse Retraining and Adoption Center, Battaglia realized when he became a standardbred racehorse owner in Saratoga Springs that there is a critical need for the aftercare of retired racehorses in the racing industry. Battaglia, along with other current members of the Heading for Home board, started the charity to help with addressing the “where do they go after racing” issue. “We thought the concept of Heading for Home would be an option for owners to consider,” he said. Volunteers of Heading Home have various backgrounds in the local equine industries and in the local business community. Heading for Home board member and practicing attorney, Sarah Burger, has represented clients in the horse industry. A native of Saratoga, she grew up around horses and believes in the mission of Heading for Home. “The organization’s focus on the aftercare of racehorses in conjunction with its focus on pairing horses with equine therapy services is so important in the horse industry,” Burger said. “I am a part of this organization because I believe in what it is doing.” The common denominator: offering the racing industry an option for horses at retirement. “A success story about a racehorse going on to a purposeful and fulfilling life after racing activity is something that should be celebrated as much as any successes they may have had on the racetrack,” Battaglia said. It is no secret that Saratoga Springs is a horse town. “The horses are the stars of the show when they are on the track and have much more to give after their racing days have ended. It is a responsibility that everyone associated with racing in any way should share,” he said. He thinks the community should be concerned for horses as they age off the track. “Saratoga being a racing community should take this responsibility very seriously since so much of our local economy is driven by its history of hosting horseracing. We owe a lot back to the horses. Just look at the walls of almost any Photo: Retired racehorses establishment you go into in the Saratoga area and you will likely Where’s Danny and Rock see images of horses.” Dj competed at Saratoga Heading for Home is one way Battaglia and the all-volunteer tracks and went through the board and staff are trying to save one horse at a time. The program Heading for Home program. Photos by Tracey Buyce accepts both thoroughbreds and standardbreds. “We help transition Horse Photography. them from the racetrack environment to a more relaxed setting and then evaluate each for potential options to adopters,” he said. “Our horses have participated in equine assisted counseling programs while in the care of Heading for Home. We are in the process of developing our connections in the community to use our horses and facilities for physical therapy programs as well. We are open to coordinating with other charities to expand the potential uses for our horses to create as many off the track options as possible for the horses,” he said. Heading for Home is a member of the Saratoga Racehorse Aftercare Charitable Endeavors collation (RACE). “RACE works together with other local charities in support of our common racehorses’ aftercare missions, including hosting the upcoming Run/Walk for the Horses on September 1st,” Battaglia said. The Run/Walk will be held at the Saratoga Spa State Park and will benefit participating local non-profits that rescue and provide second chances for ex-racehorses. Heading for Home is also participating in a joint program with Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at its farm this summer. On Tuesday, July 17 Heading for Home is hosting its second annual charity golf event at Fairways of Halfmoon Golf Club, which includes local craft beer tastings at its award ceremony. The cost is $125 a player and includes lunch, dinner, golf, cart and craft beer samples. Raffles and prizes will round out the day. One hundred percent of proceeds raised at the tournament benefits local Heading for Home programs. “We rely heavily on donations and other support to keep our programs going and possibly expand them when feasible,” Battaglia said. Anyone interested in directly supporting the golf event can participate as players, sponsors or perhaps even by providing raffle items for the event. “The topic of racehorse aftercare becomes a hot topic during the local thoroughbred meet but the need goes on throughout the year. If someone shares that concern this is one way for them to step up and be an active participant in making a difference,” Battaglia said. For more information on how to register for the golf event or to volunteer please visit the organization’s website at www.headingforhomeadoptionhorses.org. Emily Marcason-Tolmie, a Saratoga native, is a writer, researcher, wife and mother. Emily and her husband, Ryan, are the parents to two wonderful little boys, ages 4 and 1.

SUMMER SOWING

Page 11

Some seeds like tomatoes and peppers must be started inside in March but the real value (savings) to be gained from vegetable gardening is from crops that we seed directly in the garden. I have to say that there really isn’t anything at all difficult about starting seeds directly in the garden... much easier than starting seeds indoors in winter. Lettuce and all the other greens like chard and spinach are good examples. Radishes are also very rewarding since you can sow a row every two weeks and they grow and mature in less than a month. Go to the garden center and pick up the “Vegetable Schedule”. It is a wonderful resource for the beginning gardener showing when the different plants and seeds should be planted. You can get one at any Hewitt’. Beans are easy from seed. Let’s take a look at beans. According to the vegetable schedule you can start sowing them in early May or anytime through the third week of July. As you can see, there’s plenty of time to start a crop or two of beans. Now let’s take a look at a bean seed pack. The back of the seed pack has complete growing instructions. Following the instructions, make a little trench 2” deep as per the instructions and placed the seeds at the bottom. Then cover them with 2” of soil and water them in. Now just need to keep them moist and they’ll sprout in a week or less. Once they sprout, you’ll need to thin them out by removing any that were closer together than 6” Growing instructions are on the packet. spacing the seed pack indicated they need. It is tempting to let them all got but you’ll get better results if the plants are spaced so they get lots of light and air circulation. That’s pretty much it. All seeds work the same way...corn, beets, radishes and so on. Learn to use your Vegetable Schedule to time your plantings. Once you go through a season, you’ll see that it is possible to get a great deal of food from even a small plot. “It’d too late to start a vegetable garden” is also something beginners like to believe...that they’ve missed the opportunity to have a vegetable garden once Memorial Day has passed. If you spend some time with the vegetable schedule you’ll soon see that vegetables aren’t something that you “plant in the spring and harvest in the fall”. There is a huge planting season that won’t even start until late June and into July. Here’s a list of just some of our summer sowing possibilities: • Basil-Sow seeds late June through late July. • Beans-Sow seeds of quick varieties until 3rd week of July. • Broccoli-Sow seeds until mid July. • Brussels Sprouts-Sow seeds until mid July. • Cabbage-Plant transplants through mid July. • Carrots-Sow seeds through mid July. • Collards-Plant transplants until August 1st. • Dill-Sow seeds late July to early August. • Escarole, endive-Sow seeds early July through August. Sowing the bean seeds. • Kale-Sow seeds through first week of August. • Kohlrabi-Sow seeds through first week of August. • Lettuce-Sow in groups two weeks through September 1st. • Mustard-Sow seeds mid July to mid August. • Parsley-Sow seeds mid June through mid August. • Peas-Sow seeds in early to mid July. • Radish-Sow seeds until early September at two week intervals. • Spinach-Sow seeds late July to early August. • Summer squash-Sow seeds until mid July. Beans properly spaced. • Turnip-Sow seeds late June to early August. Seed packs are cheap so play around with them. There are plenty at the garden center so take some time to read the backs. Pay attention to the “days to harvest” information. As of now we have at least 100 days left until frost. You can have a crop of beans in harvest in 50 to 60 days or radishes in less than 30! Many crops like Brussels Sprouts and Swiss Chard aren’t bothered by frost and can be harvested into October most years. There’s something quite rewarding about starting your crops from seed right in the garden. Try it out... you’ll be hooked in no time. Thanks for the read.

How To Employ Staging To Impress Buyers Homeowners must consider a variety of factors when putting their homes on the market. One of the more important things to remember is the benefits of making a strong first impression on prospective buyers. That’s why many homeowners rely on staging when selling their homes. Staging requires more than just clearing out clutter or baking a batch of cookies to create a welcoming aroma. Staging helps potential buyers visualize the potential of a home and see themselves owning and living in the property. While homeowners can effectively stage their own homes, sometimes it is well worth the investment to call in a professional designer or stager. Stagers often work their magic on vacant properties or those that have been sitting on the market awhile. A stager conducts careful research into the market of a particular area and learns about the neighborhood before deciding how to appeal to likely buyers. For example, when staging a coastal home, a stager may go with nautical themes and create the impression of a relaxing and laid-back property for entertaining by the beach. Certain rules should be followed when staging a home. Furniture, decor and other amenities in the home should not detract from the house itself. Instead, such items should complement the architecture and feel of the space. Here are some additional staging suggestions.

• Remove personal effects. Homeowners are urged to replace personal photographs with neutral artwork and remove other decorative items that reflect their personalities. As an example, an avid outdoorsman probably will want to remove hunting trophies. The goal is to help buyers see themselves in the home, and that can be difficult if existing residents’ personal effects are everywhere. • Put away nonessential items. Staging helps homeowners create dream spaces. Coffeemakers, backpacks hanging on the wall and dishes in the drainboard may be part of daily living, but they can make it hard for buyers to see a home’s potential. Store such items before holding an open house. • Maximize lighting. Whenever possible, take down or open window treatments to display architectural moldings and let in as much natural light as possible. • Opt for neutral colors and furnishings. Use neutral taupe and gray paint to keep homes prime for buyers. Homeowners who have more eclectic or colorful tastes can put their items in storage and rent neutral furnishings until the home sells. Staging can improve the chances that a house sells quickly. Staging helps potential buyers see themselves in the space without distractions from the previous owners’ decorating or belongings.

Although it can be tempting to reduce the price of insurance by choosing lower amounts of coverage, there are other ways to make insurance more affordable.

lates into more people on the road — and a greater chance for insurance claims due to fender benders or theft. By moving, a person may be able to cut rates.

Automotive insurance provider State Farm says most insurance companies consider several factors when calculating the cost of car insurance. Recognizing which situations can increase or lower costs can help drivers get the best rates and coverage needed.

• Move. Insurers typically look at where a person lives when calculating rates. Those people who live in highly populated, urban areas likely will have higher premiums than others who live in more rural towns. That’s because greater population density often trans-

• Gender and age are factors. One can’t step into a time machine, but it’s helpful to know that growing a little older can lower insurance premiums. The financial advice source Money Crashers say that young men usually incur higher rates than young women

because statistically men get into more accidents. However, as a person moves into his or her senior years, the roles reverse. Older women may see higher rates than men the same age. • Keep make and model in mind. The type of vehicle driven can affect insurance premiums. Certain insurance carriers will increase premiums on vehicles that are more susceptible to damage. Flashy sports cars or those that do not score as

Researching vehicles prior to purchase and checking the rates for those cars or trucks with insurance companies can help keep costs low. • Commuters may pay more. Individuals who use a car for business or frequent commuting may pay more than people who drive less because statistically there is a greater risk for an accident, says State Farm. Reducing commute times can lower premiums. • Tie the knot. Insure.com says married couples have been found to be less of a risk to insurance providers statistically than those who are single. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that single drivers were twice as likely to be in an auto accident as married drivers. Combining policies also can help married people save. • Follow the rules of the road. Drivers who have moving violations, drink and drive or engage in otherwise risky behavior behind the wheel may see their rates soar. Insurance companies weigh factors such as driving record, age, locality, and more when assessing premium costs. Drivers have some room to get lower rates by knowing the factors that determine their premiums.

Stay Safe On Wet Roadways All Year Long Weather plays a role in driver safety regardless of what time of year it may be. From wind and rain to snow and ice, travelers routinely navigate roads when conditions are far from ideal. Wet roadways are a common occurrence. The automotive resource AAA advises that wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. Many crashes occur when drivers do not recognize the need to change their driving habits in wet conditions. Mastering driving techniques on slick, water-logged roads can help motorists avoid accidents and injuries. See and be seen Before they even get behind the wheel, drivers should inspect all headlights and taillights to ensure they are in working order. Replace any bulbs that have burned out, and clean cloudy lens covers. Drivers need to see roadways clearly, so they should make sure their windshields are free of streaks, debris and water. Periodically replacing windshield wiper blades can ensure they’re

Slow down and give other motorists space Slowing down and stopping can take extra time when roads are wet. AAA notes that, with as little as 1-12-inch of water on the road, tires have to displace a gallon of water a second to keep the rubber in contact with the street. Driving slowly can make it much easier for vehicles to stop. Plus, driving slowly enables

through large puddles or areas where water is flowing on roadways.

Exercise caution with puddles and running water

Skidding

It may be difficult to gauge the depth and ferocity of water flowing in a roadway. Quickly moving water can cause a vehicle to hydroplane or even move a large vehicle. A deep puddle also can affect drivers’ ability to steer or cause vehicles to stall. Take another route rather than risk driving

Do not slam on the brakes if a car begins to skid or hydroplane, advise experts. Instead, ease up slowly from the accelerator and then steer the vehicle into the skid or straight. Then accelerate smoothly once more. Sudden, jerky movements when a car begins to skid can exacerbate the situation.

Maintain tires Tire treads should be checked at the start of a new season to ensure the rubber will be able to grip the road. Rotate tires according to the manufacturer’s requirements, or every 5,000 miles.

Properly inflated tires will improve traction as well. Wet weather can make driving challenging. Driving slowly and modifying other habits when roads are wet can make for safe road trips.
