RELAY FOR LIFE NIGHT SARATOGA SPRINGS - The American Cancer Society’s largest national fundraiser is Relay for Life and Saratoga is having one June 6-7th beginning at 6 PM Friday night at the East Side Recreation Field. It is a family time to celebrate those who have survived cancer and honor the caregivers. It begins with a walk around the track by more than 150 survivors. It is so encouraging for the survivors and for people hoping to eventually be a survivor. Next comes the Remembering Ceremony about 10 pm that honors those who have lost their battle with cancer. This is done with luminaria bags that people may purchase in honor (H) and memory (M) of loved ones and friends lost to cancer or fighting cancer. These bags may be purchased by calling Debbie at 518-885-6506. These are decorated bags with candles inside that are lit during the Remembering Ceremony and line the track all night while teams walk the track. Later there is a Fight Back ceremony that does just that against cancer. There is also more information on www.relayforlife.org/saratogaspringsny . Teams have been selling luminaries and coming up with ways to raise money to donate to the Relay to fight back against cancer and hope to find a cure. Consider purchasing a luminaria or just come and check out the Relay for Life June 6th at 6 PM at the East Side Recreation Field on Lake Avenue in Saratoga.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week Bentley

Bentley is a 3-year old neutered male Pomeranian, who is up to date on his shots and micro-chipped. He likes to ride in the car and is good with older children, dogs, and cats. He is house trained and crate trained. Bentley is like a fluffy teddy bear! He loves to be cuddled and he cuddles back quite willingly. He loves to play with balls and toys. When he gets excited he lays down on the floor throwing his head around in the cutest antics. Bentley walks well on a leash and understands the heal command. He also knows the sit and stay commands, and he will also stop barking on command. Due to Bentley’s love of running, it would be best if his forever home have a fenced yard and be in a low traffic area.

Kalhi Kalhi is a 3-year old, grey and white, one-of-a-kind type of cat. She loves people and any attention she can get from her humans as well as other cats or dogs. She has many toes that make her look as though she has a hand: fingers and a thumb! Kalhi is spayed and up to date on her shots.

SHARE THE BEAUTY OF YOUR COMMUNITY WITH A FRESH AIR CHILD THIS SUMMER Up until now, I’ve been ruthlessly mowing my lawn very short. I could tell you that I’m doing this to promote side growth and thickening of the lawn but that would only be partly true. Mowing the lawn very low DOES indeed promote a thicker lawn as long as the soil is moist and the weather cool. I do have to admit that I’ve been mowing the lawn low to try and stretch the time between mowings a bit. I’m watching the weather for the onset of the dry summer conditions that will force me to start raising the lawnmower’s blade so the grass can grow tall enough to shade the soil below and protect the roots from overheating. While I haven’t had to do much watering of flowers and vegetables this spring, I’m sure the day will arrive soon that it will become a necessity as well. With that in mind, I’ll give you the lowdown on how to water correctly so, when you finally need to, you’ll know how to do it right. We NEVER want to use a lawn sprinkler in our flower and vegetable gardens. Spraying our garden plants with water washes away pollen (no pollen, no vegetables) and greatly decreases the time a flower lasts in our flowerbeds. Spraying also chills the leaves shocking the plant and creates the perfect conditions for diseases to take hold. How do we water the gardens without wetting the plants? Use a watering wand. A watering wand allows you to direct the water onto the soil at the base of each plant so the roots can be soaked without wetting the foliage. The wand gets the water where it’s most needed without wasting any. If you haven’t the time or patience for wand watering, you can install oozing soaker hoses under the mulch so all you have to do is hook up your hose and walk away. If you are using several soaker hoses in different beds, you may want to invest in snap connectors and an inexpensive water timer/shut off so you can let it run while you leave for work. Naturally a 4” layer of mulch in your flowerbeds will ensure that your precious water doesn’t evaporate away. Mulch keeps the soil cool and moist a lot longer and really cuts down on watering and weeding. One note of caution: don’t pile the mulch up around the stems of your garden plants including shrubs and trees. The stems and bark MUST be exposed to air for moisture and nutrients to flow unimpeded from the roots to the leaves above. I know you‘re all seeing mulch piled up volcano-like around trees in the area but, trust me, those trees are suffering and will likely die in a few years. It seems cozy to nestle that mulch up around the stems of your plants, but believe me, your plants will thrive if you keep the mulch away from the stems. Every year as summer begins, I notice that there’s a lot of concern among garden center customers about planting shrubs, trees, roses and perennials during summer. In talking to these folks, I gather that their concern is based on having read that “you should NOT transplant during summer. Spring and fall are the best time for transplanting to be done”. Literally speaking, this statement is true. However, there’s a major difference between planting and transplanting. Transplanting is the process of DIGGING OUT and moving an established plant to a new location. If you attempt to transplant during this time of year, you run a very real risk of sending the plant into fatal shock. When you dig the plant out, you’ll inevitably destroy many of the small roots. Since the plant is in the full flush of growth, this shock is often fatal. When you shop in your local nursery or garden center, you are buying plants that were dug and balled or potted much earlier when the plant was still dormant. What you are doing when you bring your new shrub or perennial home is PLANTING not TRANSPLANTING. You didn’t dig it up so you haven’t disrupted the root system or shocked the plant. It is the act of digging out that causes severe stress. Many folks put off their planting until fall because they’ve read or heard that they shouldn’t do it now. This thinking is flawed by a lack of understanding the difference between planting and transplanting. If you have planting to do, do it as soon as you can. Planting in July is better that August; and August is better than September and so on. Remember, the longer the plant has to establish itself before winter, the better the chances are that it will survive. Summer planting will mean extra attention to watering to be sure the plants don’t dry excessively during the (hopefully) hot days ahead. If you are planning to be away on vacation for more than a few days, have a friend or neighbor water for you while you’re gone. Thanks for the read.

CAPITAL DISTRICT - This summer, share the beauty of your community with a Fresh Air child while enjoying the pure joys of summer in your own backyard! Thousands of volunteer host families in rural, suburban, and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada open their hearts and homes to New York City children from low-income communities through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family program. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-forprofit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from lowincome communities since 1877. Host families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City. Fresh Air children experience simple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, swimming in a cool lake, and gazing at star-filled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on how you can make summer special for a Fresh Air child, contact Tenniel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund at www.freshair.org.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week Boshie

Blonde, Male, Pomeranian, 3-5 years old. Up to date on shots

Hayden & Evan

Chocolate, male, Pomeranian, 3-5 years old, up to date on shots. These babies were rescued from a horrendous hoarding situation along with several others. We are getting them neutered, groomed and fully vetted before they come to us. They are very sweet, good with other animals and will make perfect lap dogs. If you are a Pom lover, please come and meet them.

Carey Circle Puppy

This little guy was from a ghetto area. Our rescuer was driving one of the bad neighborhoods in Georgia and saw a lady walking a Mama dog that had been nursing pups. She immediately pulled over and asked where the pups were. She was told the rest of the pups had been traded or sold. This was the last of the pups and our rescuer took the puppy immediately and brought it to the vet. The woman would not give up the mother but she is trying to work with the owner to get her spayed. Please come and meet this cute, 10 week old baby.

Kittens

We are really overloaded with kittens this year and they keep coming in. We have all different colors and coats. Please come and see all the little furballs that are in need of homes.

THE DANGER OF SMOKING WHILE DRIVING Using a cell phone, texting and drinking alcoholic beverages are all activities that can lead to fines or arrest if done while in a moving vehicle. But in some areas, it is already illegal or may soon be, to smoke in a vehicle if in the presence of children. Since 2006, several communities across North America have implemented laws to prevent smoking in cars when children are present, and campaigns for smokefree car laws are poised to continue.

The public has become increasingly aware that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, includes the smoke that a smoker exhales and the smoke that comes from burning tobacco products. Thousands of toxic chemicals are present in secondhand smoke, including formaldehyde, lead, butane, cyanide, and carbon monoxide. These dangerous chemicals can be inhaled and tend to linger in the air for hours or longer. Smoke residue also clings to a smoker’s body and hair and can even

surface inside of a home or vehicle, according to The Mayo Clinic. Asthma, heart disease and cancer may result from contact with secondhand smoke. When someone smokes within the small en-

closed space of a car, passengers are exposed to air that is many times more toxic than what the EPA considers hazardous air quality, even if a window is down. What’s more, the particulates of tobacco smoke that are absorbed in the upholstery offgas back into the air even after many days have passed, exposing riders to toxins well beyond when someone smoked in the car.

The developing bodies of children and their small stature put youngsters at risk for greater complications from cigarette smoke, although any passenger is at risk.

Laws vary depending on location and typically apply to children ages 16 and under. Smokers are urged to quit smoking for their health and the health of others. But those who continue to smoke should refrain from smoking when inside a vehicle, especially when children are present.

In the future, cars may not be built and assembled at automotive warehouses and factories full of automated robots. They may be the product of more efficient manufacturing thanks to 3D printing, which can produce relatively inexpensive, light and efficient automobiles. One pioneer, Jim Kor, founder of the Urbee 2, a 3D-printed vehicle, made a three-wheel, two-passenger vehicle with plastic through Fused Deposition Modeling, or FDM. This involves spraying molten polymer layer by layer to build the car chassis. The entire car, which is roughly 10 feet long, took about 2,500 hours to build. What would normally be several pieces of metal and other components in a traditional car is now made from fewer and larger pieces that result in a lighter vehicle. And a car with less weight can use fuel more efficiently. Vehicles that are made through 3D printing may be the wave of the future, potentially revolutionizing automobile construction.

DID YOU KNOW?

The automotive industry has long been a male-dominated industry. Things could begin to shift after the actions taken by one major automaker. In late 2013, Mary Barra was named the chief executive officer for General Motors. Barra, who has worked for GM in various capacities for the past 33 years, becomes the first woman ever to lead a major automaker. Barra began working at GM in the Pontiac Motor Division when she was 18 as a means to pay for college tuition. Most recently she was the executive vice president of global product development, purchasing and supply chain for GM. According to GM, Barra was picked for her wealth of knowledge and managerial skills, not for political correctness.
