Mohawk Valley Chorus Pops Concert BALLSTON SPA – “At Last,” the 2013 Pops Concert of Mohawk Valley Chorus, will be presented at 7pm on Saturday, March 9, at the Ballston Spa Baptist Church and at 3pm on Sunday, March 10, at United Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam. A highlight of the program, featuring a variety of music, will be Jeffery L. Ames’ “In Remembrance,” opening the second half of the concert. This was selected by MVC director David Rossi as a special memorial to the victims of the Sandy Hook elementary school tragedy in Newtown, CT, especially Principal Dawn Hochsprung, who had close family ties to Broadalbin. The tribute will follow performances by two groups, the Sentimentalists, a sextet of chorus members, and the MVC Youth Chorale, directed by Margaret Lazarou. Mohawk Valley Chorus, which rehearses in Amsterdam, is made up of 100 vocalists from throughout the area. Members come from Fulton, Montgomery, Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga, Schoharie and Hamilton counties. Tickets for the concert are available, in advance, from chorus members, or at the door of both performances. General admission: $12; Senior Citizens & Students: $9. Children, 12 and under, are admitted for free when accompanied by an adult. Doors open 30 minutes before curtain time. (P)

Veteran Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Program SARATOGA COUNTY – The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors is proud to announce a new program aimed at Veterans who are interested in having a mentoring relationship with another Veteran. This program aims to match Veterans with other Veterans who have similar interests, goals, or life experiences. If you are someone who is attempting to get re-acclimated to civilian life, and looking for some extra help with the transition we would love to talk to you! Our mission is to design, implement and evaluate a Saratoga County based peer-to-peer support program for veterans who are experiencing post-traumatic stress symptoms. We do this by providing: outreach, education, access to local resources, peer to peer relationships, a sense of hope, help with building resiliency, tools for family and community connectedness, and access to suicide prevention/intervention measures. Please call 518-884-4999 to get connected. This is a FREE program, and ALL Veterans are welcome. If you are someone who is interested in mentoring another Veteran and you think you have time and experience to offer, please call 518884-4999 as well, and we will be happy to speak with you. Training is free and appropriate reimbursement is available. (P)

Stars for Our Troops CAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or contacting Stars4ourTroops@aol.com. (A)

History Of The Man Behind St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated each year on March 17. Although St. Patrick became the patron saint of Ireland, many people assume the role of being Irish for the day and participate in the revelry of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Many of these revelers celebrate without fully understanding the man behind the holiday. Despite having such strong links to Ireland, St. Patrick did not begin his life on the Emerald Isle. St. Patrick was born to wealthy parents in Britain in the fourth century. His given name was Maewyn. His father was a Christian deacon, but there is no evidence that theirs was a particularly religious family. It is surmised that the role of deacon was more for tax benefits rather than a holy calling. Some history suggests that Patrick considered himself a pagan in the early years of his life. At age 16, after being taken to Ireland as a prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family’s estate, Patrick began rethinking his religious beliefs. While working alone as a shepherd, he turned to religion for solace and adopted the name Patrick. He began dreaming of converting the Irish people to Christianity during his captivity. According to his historical writings, he heard a voice in a dream, which he believed to be God. God told him it was time to leave Ireland. Patrick escaped his captivity after six years by walking 200 miles to the Irish coast. He boarded a ship and fled back to Britain. Patrick had another holy revelation that he was to return to

Ireland as a missionary. To prepare, he began to study at a monastery under the authority of St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre for 12 years. He was ordained a minister and traveled back to Ireland with the purpose of assisting Christians already living in Ireland and to converting the Irish to Christianity. Patrick had an intimate knowledge of Irish culture due to his captivity. He was also familiar with traditional rituals. Therefore, instead of trying to remove all that was customary to the Irish people, he began working some of their rituals into his Christian teachings so they would seem more natural to the Irish. He managed to convert many pagans, and he and his disciples preached and converted many more. Patrick helped to build churches all over Ireland.

By the end of Patrick’s life, the majority of Ireland embraced Christianity. He lived the life of a wanderer and endured much suffering and poverty. Patrick died March 17, 461. Because the Irish descended from a long line of storytellers who had a rich tradition of oral legend and myth, there are many tales of Patrick that abound, many of which are untrue. He did not scare actual snakes out of Ireland nor did he take part in many of the embellished tales. He did succeed in making a big historical impact, which is why he entered into sainthood and had the date of March 17 established in his honor.

What Is Corned Beef? At least once a year people gather to enjoy a dish that is widely associated with Irish culture. Corned beef is a meat that is customarily served alongside potatoes and cabbage. Many people understand the “beef”part of the corned beef name, but do not understand the “corned”part. Corning refers to pickling meat in brine. Brines, which are composed of salt water, were often used to preserve meats when refrigeration was not available. According to the Department of Agriculture, the word “corn”comes from Anglo-Saxon times when meat was drycured in coarse “corns” of salt. Pellets of salt were rubbed into the meat to preserve it. Corned beef brines today contain more than just salt. They may have different spices and flavorings to add to the taste of the meat.

Right about now the packaged dormant bulbs are arriving at the garden centers. Among them will be one of my favorites: the easy-to-grow lilies. I add more every year and am still amazed at how quickly the establish themselves and multiply. No wonder I love them so much. The lilium segment of the larger liliacae family contains some of the showiest flowers to be found anywhere and many of the thousands of cultivars thrive in our northern climate including two of my favorites; Asiatic and Oriental Hybrids. Asiatic hybrids are the first of the lilies to flower in early summer. They are also the most cold tolerant of all lilium forms. Asiatics also mature and reproduce rapidly, making them a rewarding choice for those just starting to dabble in lily growing. Asiatics are available in reds, whites, pinks, oranges, and yellows of every shade. Some feature solid colored petals while others are ornately speckled. Asiatics are not strongly scented but come in a range of sizes from 2’ to 5’! To find fragrance, we must sniff out the Oriental lily hybrids. Although not quite as winter hardy as their Asiatic cousins, many Oriental varieties are hardy in zones 4 and 5; hardy enough to thrive in our area. Oriental lilies will produce some of the largest, showiest flowers that you could expect this side of the tropics. A sub-group of the Oriental lilies are the Imperial hybrids. Imperial lilies produce large, sometimes huge flowers on sturdy stems. The Imperial Gold strain, for instance, produces 5” to 7” fragrant flowers on plants up to 7’ tall. That’s right, 7’! Those who travel the tropics and return whining that we can’t grow anything to compare should wake up and smell the lilies! All lilium varieties grow from bulbs. You’ll start seeing them in garden centers in March. They’ll be offered bare-root in plastic bags. Shop for them early so you can pick out the fattest ones from the group offered. The fatter the bulb, the better the plant. Plant your lilies as soon as the ground has thawed. Choose a location that is in full sun and make sure it’s a location that doesn’t puddle up after a heavy rain. Dig your holes about 3 times as deep as the bulb is tall. As usual, I’ll insist that you add bone meal to the planting hole. After enjoying your lilies for 3 or 4 years, you’ll notice that you’re getting more plants and flowers but they aren’t as tall as they used to be. This is a signal that they’re crowded and need to be dug and divided. This can be done in fall after frost or early spring when they’ve just started to sprout from the soil (adding more bone meal of course). There are many more lilies than the two mentioned here. They’re showy and very easy to grow making them a great choice for the novice or experienced gardener who wants to impress friends and neighbors. Another of my favorite bulbs available in packages this time of year are the irises. Irises generally flower early in the season so they really stand out as a harbinger of the warm days of summer to come. Like the lilies, irises are easy to grow and multiply quickly; attributes that make them welcome in my flowerbeds. The thousands of modern iris varieties are descendants of the approximately 150 species that are found growing naturally around the world. They grow from tuberous rootstock called rhizomes. In early spring (any day now) you’ll find them for sale in the garden center bare-root in plastic bags. When you’re shopping for iris rhizomes, don’t just look at the pretty picture on the package. Inspect the rhizomes through the bag. Feel them. They should be firm to the touch and show no signs of mold. Pick out the biggest and fattest of the bunch (a good argument for shopping early). The bigger the rhizome the better the better the flowers. If you can’t plant them right away, just store them in a cool spot until the ground thaws. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises are most commonly found in bare root offerings. The popular Bearded Irises come in almost any color combination imaginable. They’ll range in height from about 15” to 36”. Mature Bearded Irises will have 3 to 5 flowers on each stem that opens in early spring. Dwarf Bearded Iris varieties grow to heights of no more than 8” or so. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises prefer to be planted in full sun in soil that’s been enriched with plenty of organic matter. The area should be well drained to avoid rotting rhizomes. Later in spring, Japanese and Siberian irises will appear in the garden center as potted perennial plants rather than bare-root rhizomes. Japanese Irises are some of the tallest Iris groups with some cultivars getting as tall as 4’. Japanese irises can tolerate some light shade and perform best when planted in an area with damp acidic soil. Along a stream or a boggy pond bank would be a great spot for Japanese Irises. The easy-to-grow Siberian irises have been gaining in popularity. This is due to its ability to grow in locations that are drier than other irises prefer. Siberian Irises have narrower leaves and smaller flowers than other iris varieties. They’ll do best when planted in full sun or partial shade. Like other irises, Siberian Irises prefer acidic soil with lots of organic but are more forgiving of less-than-ideal conditions. Another iris will appear at the garden center late in spring in the display of plants for water gardening. Yellow Flag or Water Flag Irises grows to a height of about 3’. The flowers of this moisture loving iris are bright yellow sometimes highlighted with purple veins. The bluish green leaves contrast nicely with the bright yellow flowers. Variegated cultivars are available that have yellow striped leaves in spring that gradually turn green as summer progresses. Yellow Flag Irises should be planted in organic-rich, damp areas. It is a bog plant that will do poorly if planted where it dries out at all. Irises mature quickly so, be ready to divide them every few years. A group of irises that is overgrown will form a ring as the original plants die out in the center. Dig these clumps up in early spring and divide by chopping into several smaller clumps and replant. Make sure to freshen up the soil with more organic matter before replanting. Irises as a group are one of my favorites. They’re easy and prolific and, since they flower early in the season they’ll chase those winter blues away long before we see signs of life from most of our garden plants. Give them a try; you’ll be glad you did. Thanks for the read.

AUTOMOTIVE Daytime Visibility Just As Important As Nighttime Visibility (MS) -- Visibility is something many motorists take for granted, especially during the day, when sunlight tends to make drivers less cautious than they might be at night. But as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes, more traffic accidents occur during daylight hours than at night, when headlights make vehicles more visible to other motorists and more pedestrians are walking around. Though many drivers feel more comfortable during daylight hours, pedestrians and oncoming traffic are not always easy to see, especially when weather and road conditions are unfavorable. Fortunately, there are easy ways for drivers to improve their daytime visibility.

EMPLOYMENT

* Install LED daytime running lights. Being seen while driving in the daytime is just as essential for a driver’s safety as being able to see when driving at night. Daytime running lights, or DRLs, are an effective way of improving visibility because they make the vehicle more detectable during daylight hours and dusk, when a motorist’s visibility is reduced. Studies have shown that DRLs reduce multiple-vehicle daytime accidents by as much as 11 percent, effectively preventing daytime head-on and front-corner collisions by making it easier to see a vehicle, particularly as it approaches from far away. Some cars have daytime running lights based off their headlamps. These are not very bright and can ultimately cause the lamps to wear out prematurely. Philips LED DayLight DRLs are equipped with high-powered LUXEON® LEDs that project a powerful, bright white light and a wide beam, making a vehicle more visible to fellow motorists as well as pedestrians. In addition, the Philips LED DRLs allow drivers to switch from using their standard headlights to an LED light source during the daytime, extending the life of the headlights while drawing less power from the vehicle.

EMPLOYMENT

* Routinely check windshield washer fluid. Some vehicles have just one reservoir for windshield washer fluid, while others equipped with a rear wiper typically have two. Locate these reservoirs and make sure there is an adequate amount of fluid in each, especially during the winter and early spring months when snow and debris such as sand or salt from the roadways can accumulate on the windshield and make it Philips LED Daylight DRLs improve safety by increasing difficult to see. If the reservoir is empty, visibility to other drivers while adding style with the look but you are out of windshield washer fluid, of high performance. do not use water as a replacement, as water can freeze and cause damage to the reservoir and hoses. * Inspect wipers and replace the blades if they are sacrificing visibility. Old or worn out wiper blades can also negatively impact visibility. Ford Motor Company recommends drivers inspect their vehicle’s wiper blades at least once every six months or as soon as they fail to clear your windshield completely or leave streaks. Older vehicles with pitting on the windshield tend to be harder on wiper blades, so drivers who have cars with some extra years under their belt should inspect their blades more frequently. * Clean interior glass and mirrors. Interior glass can suffer from film buildup that can reduce a driver’s vision, especially during daytime hours when such buildup can create a hazy reflection from the sun. This film can be especially thick in cars where drivers or their passengers routinely smoke. In addition to cleaning the interior glass, keep the rearview and side mirrors clean and properly adjusted so your vision is not compromised while driving. Drivers should be able to see all of the views around the back of the car, especially the blind spots along both sides of the vehicle. When cleaning or adjusting the rearview mirror, remove any trinkets or other items hanging from the mirror. Such items might add some personality or aesthetic appeal, but they can also prove a significant distraction and make it difficult for drivers to see the road.

Things To Know About Motor Oil When it comes to taking care of their vehicles, many motorists prefer to be overly cautious. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, there are times when being too cautious can unnecessarily cost you money. Motor oil, and when to change that oil, has long been a point of contention. Many drivers grew up being told that motor oil should be changed every 3,000 miles. However, that myth has been debunked for many of today’s vehicles, which should

come with suggested intervals between oil changes. According to Edmunds.com, in 2010 the average interval for oil changes was 7,800 miles. In addition to changing a car’s motor oil less frequently, there are other things drivers should know about motor oil. * Oil does not necessarily need to be changed before a long trip. Taking a trip? While it’s good to have your car examined before embarking, if the recommended oil change interval is not up, then you do not need to preemptively change your oil.

* Black oil does not necessitate a change. Conventional wisdom once suggested if the oil on the dipstick is black then it needs to be changed. But nowadays automotive professionals are noting that black oil is doing its job and different additives might be changing the oil’s color, which means the oil doesn’t need to be changed.

* You can use petroleum-based oil after using synthetic. Another longstanding myth regarding motor oil was that once you use a synthetic motor oil instead of a petroleum-based oil you have to continue using synthetic oil, which is often more expensive than more traditional motor oil, in order to avoid harming the vehicle. However, automotive professionals have noted that these two types of oils are now often blended, meaning switching back and forth from one to the other is not likely to cause any damage to your vehicle. Just be sure to use motor oil that meets the standards set forth in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

* Consider an earlier oil change after buying a new vehicle. Sometimes a new vehicle will need an oil change after its first 3,000 miles. However, this does not mean your vehicle will need one every 3,000 miles. According to Blackstone Laboratories, who study motor oil, oil samples taken from engines during their initial 3,000 miles of driving had elevated metal levels from the camshafts and pistons. These elevated levels will not necessarily be harmful, but some auto manufacturers recommend a shorter initial interval just to be safe. Honda, however, includes an anti-wear additive in their break-in oil and advises against changing their oil early. Consult your owner’s manual to determine if it’s best to change your oil after the initial 3,000 miles or to let it go until the recommended interval.

Did You Know? There are different times in a driver's life when he or she may have to pull over on the side of the road. Whether a flat tire has derailed the trip, the driver or a passenger is experiencing motion sickness or you find the car isn't performing correctly and it warrants a look under the hood, pulling over on the shoulder may be necessary. It can be difficult to pull over smoothly and safely on a busy highway, especially when you are in a stressful situation, such as a mechanical emergency. But it is in your best interest to remain calm and follow a few procedures. First, slow down and put on your right-turn signal to indicate you will need to move into the right lane. Some

The Canadian Automobile Association recommends staying inside the vehicle, especially on a busy road. Tow trucks and police vehicles typically cruise busy stretches of road and help may arrive in a matter of minutes. Those who have a roadside assistance plan membership can use a cell phone to make a call for help. It is best to wait in the car until a tow truck or police arrive.

people prefer to put their four-way-flashers on after they have successfully cleared the lanes and are ready to navigate onto the shoulder. Try to select a spot where you are not on a bend or where there is poor visibility or your vehicle cannot be seen by other drivers on the highway. You do not want to be injured while exiting or attempting to work on the pulled-over vehicle. Drivers should keep an emergency roadside assistance preparedness kit containing flares, emergency triangles or cones, a flashlight, batteries, a poncho, booster cables, duct tape, a utility knife, cord, a blanket, and first aid supplies in the car as a precaution. Each item serves its own unique purpose.
