Welcome a Fresh Air Child Into Your Home This Summer CAPITAL REGION – Each summer, over 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. Hosting a child does not take much – just a little room in your heart and your home – but the experience creates friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. Volunteer families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City. Fresh Air children experience simple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass and gazing at star-filled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families in North Central New Hampshire often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on hosting a Fresh Air child, please contact Lisa Bladecki at 603-387-1870 or The Fresh Air Fund at (800) 367-0003. You can also visit them online at www.freshair.org. (A)

Sue Leahey, Kim Leahey & Joan Joyner, Education Superintendents, believe that the young citizens of Saratoga County are an important part of the community and should have the opportunity to share their collections with the many thousands of people attending the fair. Set up date for the education exhibits is Thursday, July 12, from 10am-2pm at the Saratoga Fair Grounds under the Grandstand. Entries will be accepted on this day only. For more information on entering, call Sue or Kim Leahey at 885-4084 or Joan Joyner at 587-4622. You may also call the Saratoga County Fair Office at 885-9701. Things To Consider Before Adding A Greenhouse Many men and women with a passion for gardening hope to one day have a greenhouse they can call their own. Though greenhouses are a great place for gardeners to hone their crafts, they can also be quite expensive, and there are some things gardeners should consider before building a greenhouse. * Size: A greenhouse can be grandiose or small in stature. The size of a greenhouse depends on the gardener and the amount of property available. Larger greenhouses can be breathtaking, but the homeowner in you might not want a greenhouse to dominate your entire property. In addition, if your planting plans are relatively modest, a bigger greenhouse probably doesn't make much sense. * Cost: Greenhouses can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Price should not dictate which greenhouse you buy, so if you want a large one but can only afford a

small one, then it might be best to keep saving money until you can afford one that meets your needs. * Use: If you plan to use the greenhouse just during the standard gardening seasons, then you won't need to heat it. However, most greenhouse owners want to use the greenhouse year-round, in which case you will need to heat the interior. In addition, those want to keep gardening during the dog days of summer will have to ventilate the greenhouse. Consider the use and the potential cost a year-round greenhouse before making your decision.

* Location: The greenhouse will need to be in a place on the property that gets lots of sun. Before buying or building a greenhouse, choose an area on the property where plants will thrive. If that area is currently used for something else, ask yourself and those who share the home with you if converting that part of the property to a greenhouse is something they can all live with. You don't want the greenhouse to be a burden or negatively impact your family's quality of life.

* Native plants benefit local wildlife. The native plants and the native wildlife spent years and years evolving together, with each doing their part to ensure the other's survival. But as development continued, local wildlife suffered because of lost food sources. The local wildlife needs local, native plants to survive, so choosing these plants instead of exotic plants can help ensure the survival of wildlife that helps keep the ecosystem in check.

* Native plants require less work. Some prospective home buyers might find a yard filled with exotic plants to be visually stunning, but they might also see a good deal of work to maintain those plants. Many exotic plants require significant work on a homeowner's part to survive, while native plants have already adapted to the local climate and will require much less care. This is often attractive to current and future homeowners alike.

The Case For Choosing Native Plants One of the best ways to improve a home's resale value is to address the landscape. Increasing a property's curb appeal can be done in many ways, but a well-pruned lawn and garden gives buyers the impression that the sellers truly took the time to maintain the home and the surrounding property. Unfortunately, many homeowners choose exotic plants when addressing their landscape. Though these plants can be appealing and make a property stand out, if the plants are not native to the region, they could be doing more harm than good. Instead of upgrading your property with exotic

* Native plants might be a better investment. A native plant has evolved over the years to survive in its given area. Local insect populations and fungal infections might be able to destroy an exotic plant, but a native plant has grown resistant to such problems and likely has the ability to fight such infestations or infections on its own. An exotic plant might require costly pesticides and considerable attention from homeowners to survive such problems. Though homeowners might find exotic plants help their home stand out from their neighbors', it's important that homeowners recognize the environmental benefits of choosing local plants before making any decisions.

Rabbits may seem like adorable critters one would love to have around. However, rabbits can cause serious damage to landscapes in a short amount of time. Keeping them away from plants and shrubs takes some patience.

Repellents are another way to keep rabbits at bay. There are several methods that may work that homeowners can try. * Thiram: This fungicide can be used on ornamental plants (ones that won't be eaten due to their toxicity). Rabbits find this product repulsive. It will have to be reapplied after heavy rains and may not be practical if pets frequent the yard.

* Blood meal: Sprinkle blood meal, a high-nitrogen form of natural fertilizer, or hang bags of cheesecloth containing the substance around plants that should not be eaten by rabbits. * Manure: Make a solution of cow manure and water and spray it on plants. * Pepper: Rabbits frequently sniff out their surroundings. Red pepper, cayenne pepper or even black pepper can be an irritant that works to send rabbits away. * Mexican Marigolds: This plant is said to repel rabbits.

* Human scents: Some rabbits are put off by the scent of humans in the garden. Old shoes or a piece of clothing may achieve this. However, chances are rabbits have grown accustomed to the smell of humans and are bold enough to enter the garden. * Dogs and cats: Some rabbits will not visit lawns in which cats and dogs have staked their claim. * Corncobs: Soak used corncobs in vinegar and place around the garden. * Hair clippings: Some people say that hair clippings from the barber shop will deter rabbits.

Other options involve live traps and repellents. Live traps, while effective, will only trap the animal. The homeowner will then have to relocate it to another area. Chances are, unless homeowners routinely drop the rabbits off miles away from home, these uninvited guests will eventually find their way back to a particular yard.

Isle of Hope

DiSiena Downtown Furniture

Rabbits have a penchant for feeding on seedlings, shrubs, bulbs, and certain flowers. If really hungry, they'll essentially munch on anything a lawn or garden has to offer. Homeowners might end up watching those hostas disappear before learning that the daffodils have been decimated. There are certain options that can keep rabbits out of the backyard. Some are more humane than others. Before a homeowner decides to take rabbit control into his or her own hands, the laws of the neighborhood should be investigated. For example, kill traps certainly will take care of rabbits, but they may not be legal in a particular area. Many also view them as inhumane and only a last resort when trying to solve a rabbit problem.

* Interview prospective companies. Set up appointments or price quotes from three different lawncare services. Compare the offerings and the prices. Ask questions about whether pricing is "per week" or "per cut." Determine if services such as edging, blowing away debris, trimming, and clean-up are included. * Find out about extras. Some services will offer packages for spring and fall clean-up, and homeowners should inquire about any special offers during the initial comparison stage.

Hiring A Lawncare Professional Many homeowners hire a lawncare professional to tend to their lawns and gardens. To hire a quality service or individual, homeowners need to do a little homework.

* Who does the work? A company may farm out work to other landscapers. Figure out who will be arriving each week and base decisions accordingly.

* Compare prices. Professional landscapers offer an array of services and, as a result, those services vary in cost. Ask neighbors and friends what they pay for routine maintenance and any other special services. Get recommendations for companies that do work you admire.

Highlighting, or up lighting, is a landscaping technique in which light from below is used to accent certain focal points in a landscape. In many instances, the light is used to illuminate a particularly impressive or unique plant. When highlighting, two or more spot light fixtures are placed at the base of a landscape component and pointed upward. While highlighting is most commonly used to illuminate plants, it can be used to draw attention to other focal points of a

landscape as well, including sculptures or other garden structures. Light fixtures are aimed away from observers as a means to preventing glare, and oftentimes the fixtures themselves are camouflaged to maintain the natural beauty of the landscape.

Gardening gloves come in a variety of materials based on the tasks they are intended for. Here is a brief list of some of the most common. Cotton Cotton garden gloves are lightweight and breathable, making them suitable for small tasks in dry conditions, such as digging holes and planting seeds. They cost little and often come in multi-packs. Leather

Scrapes. Splinters. Sunburn. These are just some of the injuries gardeners may sustain to their hands. Underneath all of the dirt it isn't uncommon for gardeners to find blisters, bruises, cuts and more on their hands, wrists and forearms. While gardeners may not be able to escape injury completely, they can find some measure of protection through gardening gloves.

Leather gloves can be expensive but provide ample protection for heavy-duty tasks like pruning bushes and chopping down trees. They are durable, and if cared for properly, will wear well for a long time.

cleaning water features and clearing out ponds. They are not breathable, however, and can prove difficult to use on a really hot day.

Rubber

Spandex gloves contract and expand easily, making them suitable for all kinds of gardening tasks in and out of the water. They are completely waterproof and wear well.

Rubber gloves are great for tasks involving water, such as

Spandex

Within these basic garden glove materials, you will find various styles, including chemical resistant, grip enhancing and puncture resistant. It is best to have several styles on hand to suit multiple purposes in the garden.

When shopping for gardening gloves, treat them as you would any other apparel. Try on each pair and make certain they fit and feel good. Flex your hand; you should have plenty of room to move your fingers around, and the interior lining should feel soft to the touch. Some gardening gloves wear out faster than others. Purchase the highest quality you can afford and take care of them. Read the label and follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning. Store your gloves in a place that is easy to access, such as in the top drawer of your tool chest. Keep your gardening gloves in good condition, and they will return the favor to your hands when the time comes to use them.

Safety When planning your space, make safety a top priority. Since evenings are prime-time for summer entertaining, lighting is an essential safety measure. Start by considering where you need to increase visibility. Choose post-mounted lanterns near driveways and wall-mounted lanterns next to doors for ease of access and to welcome guests. If underground wiring is required, consult an electrician or experienced landscape lighting contractor.

Get Your Outdoor Spaces Ready For Summer Living (StatePoint) There’s no better place than your own backyard for relaxing, entertaining and enjoying the outdoors. And there’s no better time than summer to spruce up your space. If you’re looking to upgrade a humdrum yard into something special, here are some things to consider:

Quick Drying Steam Cleaning. Provide A Fresh Clean, Non-Polluted Environment. Reasonable Rates. No Additional Charges For Traffic Spotting, Wools Or Berbers. Also, 10% off location cleaning until 7/15/12

More information on landscape lighting can be found at www. kichler.com or www.landscapelighting.com. You can also receive referrals to Kichler-certified landscape lighting contractors by clicking “Need a Contractor?” Energy-Savings

For deck stairs or terraced paths, don’t forget step lights to aid in navigation.

Don’t let your exterior spaces drive up your home’s energy bills. New LED deck and landscape lights are low-maintenance, cost effective options. Lasting up to 40,000 hours -- about 15 years -- these fixtures use 75 percent less energy than incandescent lights.

And thoroughly check outdoor railings, steps, decks and porches to make sure they are steady and that no nails or boards have come loose.

“Since outdoor lighting is often left on all night or for many hours at a time, savings from LED lighting can really add up,” Dross says.

Beauty Your yard is an extension of your home, so don’t let design and style fall by the wayside when planning its look.

Remember to avoid cheaper LED lights with a bluish cast that many find unattractive. Opt instead for a warm white light, such as Kichler’s Design Pro LED landscape lights.

For a touch of natural beauty, consider planting a flower garden to attract butterflies and humming birds.

Don’t just dream about the perfect outdoor space. For a great season, transform your yard into a beautiful, fun place.

“Illuminate paths and define edges where the garden or grass meet walkways,” says Jeff Dross, corporate director of education and industry trends for Kichler Lighting, a leading supplier of outdoor and landscape lighting for consumers and contractors. The interplay of light and shadow adds magic to the night. By carefully placing accent lights at upward or downward angles and using wall wash lighting, you can silhouette trees and direct shadows. Capture the nighttime loveliness of water features like ponds with LED lights specially built for underwater illumination. For best results, consult a landscape lighting expert.

Riding Mowers Can Make Lawn Care More Manageable Homeowners love extensive, lush, green lawns. But the elbow grease that goes into tending to the landscape is far less beloved. One task that routinely causes bouts of procrastination is mowing the lawn. But riding mowers can change the way homeowners view mowing the lawn. Traditionally, mowing the lawn has been a task largely handled by homeowners pushing walk-behind mowers. Whether these mowers were powered by gasoline, electricity or simply human power, they were the type of mower that was generally the most popular and most affordable.

Emerich Sales & Service 187 Valentine Road Charlton/Ballston Lake, NY 12019 (518) 399-8574 EmerichSales.com

Individuals had different features they could consider in their mowers, including horsepower and the size of the deck. There were also mowers that could bag or mulch. Despite these features, homeowners with a particularly large back or front yard -- or both -- may have found lawn mowing to be tedious work. Those who have yards of almost an acre or more often find riding mowers to be an efficient method of mowing the lawn,

and one that also does not require as much effort out in the sun.

A riding mower's cutting deck is in front, while a lawn or gardening tractor's cutting deck is mid-mounted, which is how they differ. Lawn tractors also may be able to accept other landscaping attachments. A riding mower is more maneuverable than a tractor, particularly for landscapes that may have trees or planting beds. Cost is the one thing that may deter some homeowners from a riding mower. While a walk-behind mower could cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars and up, riding mowers generally start at $1,000 and may be as much as $10,000, depending on the extra features, like cruise control and cup holders.

However, some find that what riding mowers lack in affordability, they make up for in convenience. Plus buying a riding mower may pay for itself in savings on landscaping services over the course of one to two seasons. As with any lawn tool, it's important to note that riding mowers are not toys and they should not be handled by children, nor should children be allowed to ride along while mowing.

Gardening With Kids Teaches Healthy Habits (StatePoint) School may be out for summer, but as a parent, you can ensure there are plenty of opportunities for your children to learn new things throughout the vacation.

855-JRSY-TENT 855-577-9836

Start with something fun, practical, and vital to health and wellness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. But you can fight this trend with a hands-on lesson in nutrition.

“Gardening is a great way to bridge the summer learning gap and promote a healthy lifestyle,” said Shari Brown, the winner of 2012 Toyota Teacher of the Year Award. “Not only will you be improving your family’s nutrition by incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into your meals, you’ll be exposing your children to a subject they may not learn about in school.” Brown, a North Carolina educator, was honored by the National Center for Family Literacy for her work helping families learn together. She plans to use her grant award to create a community garden.

TABLES • TENTS • CHAIRS • LINENS

Brown is encouraging families everywhere to learn together while gardening. She has several tips to help you learn in the garden: • Involve your children in the process of picking out what type of plants to grow. Then develop fun, nutritional meals together, such as veggie pizza and fruit salad. • Bugs are cool! Get your kids excited and curious about crucial garden critters with library books, Internet sites, your local science center, videos and bug games. • Read stories about gardening with your children. Make a scrapbook about the experience of growing your garden.

NEW JERSEY - NEW YORK WWW.JERSEYTENTS.COM

• Emphasize gardening and nutrition lessons in your home, too. Get your kids watering the house plants and making sure they have enough sunlight. Teach your kids what is compostable and have a discussion over dinner about where all the food on their plate comes from, not just what you’ve grown yourself. Expose them to a wide variety of new fruits, vegetables, plants and seasonings. The fruits and veggies you harvest will be delicious, but your child’s knowledge will be the most important thing you grow in the garden this summer.

Succulents For Low Maintenance Now is the time of year to focus on outdoor landscaping projects. One popular project involves redesigning the front yard or backyard to include an array of different flowers and foliage. While many people gravitate to the flashy and colorful annuals on display at nurseries and home centers, you may want to consider adding some succulents

Succulents are particularly good to have in areas prone to arid temperatures or where water restrictions are often in place. They can be enSucculents, like jade, are ideal for arid conditions or for vironmentally friendly because of their ability gardens where low-maintenance plants are desired. to conserve water. Succulents treat water as a precious resource, and their entire makeup is designed to minimize consumption of water. Because they thrive in sunlight, succulents can be the ideal plants to put in extremely sunny and hot locations. They will not wither and dry out due to extreme heat. For particularly dry areas of landscape or where soil is subpar, consider the placement of different varieties of succulents to create a varied and eye-catching display. There are many other advantages to planting succulents; some of which include: * Succulents offer contrasts in shape, texture and colors. With the many varieties, you're bound to find something interesting and different to add to the landscape. * Whether you have ample acreage in the yard or simply some containers available for planting, succulents will thrive. They grow just as well in containers as they do in the ground. * Succulents don't tend to require pruning or cutting back of the plant. With this in mind, you can expect them to grow large. Therefore, space the plants adequately to allow for growth. * Succulents are perennials. So once you plant them, they should last for years and years without the hassle and expense you can expect from planting annuals every year. * Indoor greenhouses or sunrooms can be another good place for succulents. They prefer not to get chilled, which makes a controlled environment advantageous. When considering a spot for your succulents, choose areas that

Succulent plants can be a boon to a homeowner without the time or resources to maintain plants. Succulents get their name from their primary function, which is drawing up and storing water. Succulents are able to thrive in arid conditions, and there are more than 300 different types, including some exotic species. The advantages to planting succulents are many. Because they store water in their stems, roots and leaves, this reduces the number of times an owner must water them. Succulents can go several days between waterings. Succulents, like cacti, that have few if any leaves, are perhaps best at managing water because they lose little to evaporation through the foliage.

Space the succulents widely apart -- more so than you would with other plants -- to allow them to spread. It looks like summer has arrived. What a joy this warm stretch has been. Our gardens have been playing catch up after the wet spell a couple of weeks ago. My wife and I managed to finally get the veggies all planted the weekend after Memorial Day. Along with hot summer weather come the fungal diseases. Most of us are familiar with powdery mildew and black spot. Anyone who’s grown phlox, melons, squash or beans has probably seen powdery mildew. A plant under attack from this common fungal disease will exhibit misshapen leaves that seem to be coated with white powder. Black spot, another fungal disease, causes black spots (logically enough) to appear on the leaves followed by a gradual yellowing of the leaf. Black spot is very common on roses. These diseases start out as tiny spores present in the soil or on the stem of the dormant plant. When conditions become right, they incubate and develop into a growing organism. Once these fungal diseases take hold, you’ll have no option but to spray with a fungicide or, in extreme cases, remove the infected plant. Fortunately, there are preventive measures that you can take to keep fungal diseases from taking hold in your garden. We can get a clue how to avoid fungal diseases by thinking about one that we humans are susceptible to: Athlete’s Foot. We know that if we constantly wear damp, dirty sneakers, we increase the chances that we’ll get a case of Athlete’s Foot. We avoid Athlete’s Foot by drying our shoes between use, and we always (at least I hope you do) put on clean socks before we put our sneakers on. The tactics we use to prevent the spores of Athlete’s Foot from taking hold are quite similar to how we can prevent powdery mildew and other fungal diseases from getting a “toe hold’ in our flower and vegetable gardens. Good garden hygiene. First, avoid working in your gardens when the plants are wet. When you handle wet plants, you may be spreading the spores of fungal diseases from plant to plant increasing the chances that they will find a plant or location where conditions are favorable. Wait until the plants have dried completely before you handle them. If you are pruning plants that are susceptible to these diseases (like roses), clean the blades of your pruners with chlorine bleach as you move from plant to plant. This will help to prevent the spread of diseases. Keep your gardens well weeded. Weeds may play host to a disease that won’t affect them but your garden plants may not be so lucky. Weeds are also a good place for insect pest to hide out. MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, try not to wet the leaves of your plants when watering. DON”T SPRAY THEM WITH WATER! This spring, our garden has already been subjected to too much damp weather. When you wet the leaves, you’re creating the soggy condition that fungal diseases love (and your plants hate). Give them a break and buy a watering wand so you can soak the soil while wetting the leaves as little as possible. To me, spraying leaves and flowers is like intentionally putting on damp, dirty socks. I know you’ve all seen those commercials on TV showing folks, who supposedly know better, misting down the flowers. It IS picturesque but it’s one of the worst things you can do to your garden plants. Some houseplants benefit from misting in the dry winter home but it is a practice that is best avoided in the outdoor garden. In addition to promoting fungal diseases, spraying your plants with water washes away the pollen. Once this happens, the plant has no use for the flower and aborts it. What this means to you is that, if you make a practice of spraying your plants with water, the flowers won’t last very long and, in the case of vegetables, you won’t get much fruit. Did you really do all that work planting just to sabotage your own effort by spray watering. Those who read me regularly know that I feel strongly about this, so remember: when it gets hot, you may need to go soak your head but your plants need to enjoy the dry heat as much as you’ll let them. Besides, plants absorb water through their roots, not the leaves and flowers. Think about it; if you were out in the desert about to die from thirst and I came along with a nice cold glass of water. What would you want me to do with it? Give it to you to drink or throw it in your face. Stop being mean to your gardens and don’t spray your plants with water. Give them a nice cool drink instead. Thanks for the read.

CAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or contacting Stars4ourTroops@aol.com. (A)

4 Color The Advertiser 674-2841

We recently considered the various hamlets, villages, towns and cities in southern Saratoga County and vicinity, and decided to quantify and name the ones we claim to represent as a chamber. You’d think this would be an easy task, but actually the number keeps changing! When I started this job in March 2011 our web site listed something like 8 towns with very familiar names even to a former downstater like me. When Nigar Hale, our MemPete Bardunias, bership Director, joined us a few months later I President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County proudly held up our Directory map (available at the Chamber Information Center located behind the big Price Chopper at exit 9) and she recoiled in horror. “Where’s Charlton?” she asked, wondering why it was left off. Oops. So Charlton got put on the next map. Then we started adding Crescent, since after all it’s the first hamlet one encounters crossing the Bridges. And Rexford was easy – that one has its own ZIP code. But wait – what about Vischer Ferry? After all the Chamber is involved in a pretty big project there. Shouldn’t we at least claim to represent it? Plus Crescent and Vischer Ferry are named on the same highway sign for Exit 8. So of course it was added. Thinking I had the entire list complete I thought about the Northway signage again and said, “Jonesville.” The implications were clear, and Jonesville made the list. So we represent 15 municipalities including Ballston Lake, Ballston Spa, Burnt Hills, Charlton, Clifton Park, Crescent, Halfmoon, Jonesville, Malta, Mechanicville, Rexford, Round Lake, Stillwater, Vischer Ferry and Waterford. But wait – what about nearby towns, some just over the county line who interact often with our membership? Perhaps the best answer is, if you plan to do business between Exit 13 and the Bridges regardless of your physical location, you are welcome in the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County!
