SCHUYLERVILLE COMMUNITY THEATER FESTIVAL OF TREES AND CRAFT FAIR

SCHUYLERVILLE - For the 7th consecutive year, the Schuylerville Community Theater will host the SCT Festival of Trees and Craft Fair in the Town of Saratoga Town Hall. On Friday night, beginning at 6pm Dec. 2nd there will be the traditional lighting of the Memory Tree on the front lawn of the Town Hall on the corner of Routes 29 and 4 which will open the weekend’s festivities. Following the outdoor event, there will be a small invited guest reception and preview of the beautifully decorated trees, wreaths and centerpieces that will be offered for sale on Saturday, December 3rd from 10am-4pm. Besides the numerous artisans offering unique craft items for sale, there will be a variety of musical groups performing throughout the day on Saturday. All the decorated items will be available for sale. This is a great way to start the Holiday Season in the Historic Village of Schuylerville. In the customary Dutch tradition, the annual parade down Schuylerville’s main street featuring the arrival of St. Nicholaas with his white horse will follow beginning at 4:15pm on Saturday. Families and children are invited to join the parade carrying lighted lanterns provided by the local Lion’s Club and singing Christmas Carols. The parade will end at the park at the south end of the village with the reading of The Story of St. Nicholaas, the official lighting of the village Christmas tree and songs. The Festival of Trees and Craft Fair will be open on Saturday, Dec. 3rd from 10-4. The outdoor display of Memory trees will be visable until January 6th. Admission to all events is free. Please join us!

SARATOGA COUNTY - Ellen has reached the point where she cannot stand long enough to do the light vacuuming or simple dusting needed to keep her small apartment neat. She hopes to remain at home. If she were to try to enter a nursing home she would not qualify, could not afford it. She called the Care Links program to ask for a volunteer. Can you give a little time to do chores for Ellen? This all volunteer program tries to match people to help with chores, visiting, grocery shopping or transportation. Please call 399-3262 if you can fit helping an elderly person into to schedule.

use once this holiday season has come and gone. • Make your own gift tags. Christmas card stock is the perfect medium to turn into gift tags for presents. Cut the cards into squares or rectangles or use a stencil to create whatever shape you desire. Then use a hole punch to create a space for ribbon or another tie. Use the tag to dress up gifts with something more unique than self-stick tags. • Get magnetized. All it takes is a scissor, some glue and sheets of magnet for a decorative and fun craft project. Turn favorite Christmas cards into mementos that can be saved year after year, which also will dress up refrigerators or other magnetic surfaces. This idea works well for photo greeting cards as well. • Make Christmas card ornaments. Use the cards to create uniquely shaped ornaments for the tree. Cards can be turned into block shapes and hung with ribbon. Another idea is to punch out circles or ovals from the cards and tile them on a foam egg to look like a multicolored pine cone. Explore your creative side and decorate your tree at the same time. • Create greeting card garlands. Display cards by stringing them together and hanging them from the

mantle or another prominent area. If cards are too large, punch out large circles from the cards and then attach those disks to heavy thread. • Decorate your packages. Instead of overspending on preprinted gift bags, make your own. Buy plain bags in a solid color and then embellish them with cutout patterns or pictures from Christmas cards. • Frame favorite cards. Make greeting cards a permanent part of holiday decor by framing the most decorative ones you receive. Use these frames year after year and put them on display with other holiday decorations. • Make a wine bottle gift tag. Use a 11⁄4-inch hole punch

to create an opening for the neck of a wine bottle on a piece of folded card stock. Glue a greeting card to the portion of the card stock that will lay flush with the wine bottle and you have a

decorative wine tag. • Shred older cards for confetti. Fill gift boxes or bags with homemade confetti made from recycled Christmas cards.

December 1, 2016

If you step back and try to be objective, the practice of installing a tree inside our home at this time of year seems a bit bizarre. How did all this get started; and when? The symbolism and use of trees as decorations at this time of year are far older than many of us suspect. It is known, for instance, that pre-Christian Romans displayed decorated evergreens (oak trees which are evergreen in that part of the world). They lit the tree with candles and often topped the tree with a sun symbol. The ancient Celts of the British Isles also ornamented oak trees with apples and candles to offer thanks to the sun during the solstice period. Many of us can still remember when the Christmas tree wasn’t put up until Christmas Eve. This tradition likely had its roots (no pun intended, well...maybe) in the English tradition of bringing home the Yule log on Christmas Eve. The Yule log was generally a large stump, often including the roots, and was decorated with mistletoe, holly and other greenery. The log was lighted with a bit of the previous year’s log (thus protecting the house from fire for the upcoming year) and needed to be kept burning for at least twelve hours to insure continued good fortune. With the advent of central heating, the appeal of the Yule log has been all but forgotten. The evergreen tree as the tree of choice for solstice celebrating appears to have its origins in the Christianizing of the Germanic tribes of Eastern Europe. Some of the earliest accounts tell of St. Boniface dedicating the fir tree to the Christ Child with the oath “You are the light of the world, a tree ever green” to counter the sacred oak of Odin in the eighth century. Other accounts credit Martin Luther as the first to bring home a cut evergreen tree and decorate it with candles that symbolize the stars in the sky over Bethlehem the night Christ was born. Hundreds of years passed until the tradition of decorating evergreen trees at Christmas became common. It wasn’t until 1841 when King Albert displayed a decorated evergreen tree in his palace that the tradition took hold in English speaking countries. Like the American people, American Holiday celebrations have become a melting pot of customs and traditions brought to our shores from the older cultures of our forefathers. The evergreen, ancient symbol of life ever lasting is still included as the bright focal point of a celebration of rebirth, light and life. Whatever the origins of the practice, I love the smell of a fresh Balsam Fir when I bring it inside. The trick is to keep the tree hydrated so the needles stay on and the tree stay fresh and fragrant. The first step is to get a fresh tree. When you’re out in the tree lot picking out your tree, bent the little branch tips to make sure they are supple, not brittle. With Thanksgiving as late as it is this year, all the firs should be in fine shape. Beware of spruce trees which are notorious for falling apart quickly once they’re cut and brought inside. Next, make sure to make a fresh cut on the base of the tree right before you bring it inside. The reason this is so important is because the tree has sucked air into the bottommost cells of the trunk. Even if the tree is placed in water, it can’t absorb it because the first cells at the base are clogged with air. A fresh cut exposes fresh cells that can absorb water and sent it along to the cells above right out to the branches and needles. Most tree lots will offer to make this fresh cut for you. This is fine if you’re going to rush home and get the tree into water within and hour. If it will be longer than that, you might as well wait and make your own fresh cut on the tree at home. Make sure that your tree stand is clean before you put your tree into it. If your tree stand is like mine, it spends most of its time in the shed gathering dust. If you don’t clean this dust out, it will mix with the water the tree is absorbing and clog up those all important cells that you just exposed at the base of the truck when you made your fresh cut. When you place the tree into the stand, fill the stand up with very hot water. Hot water is absorbed more quickly than cold water so the tree will re-hydrate as quickly as possible. You don’t need to use hot water every time you add water to the stand; just the first time. Make sure that the tree stand always has water in it. If you let it run dry, the tree will suck air into the bottom cells again and it won’t be able to absorb water until another fresh cut is made. This isn’t likely to happen once the tree is decorated. Remember: Fresh Tree, Fresh Cut and Fresh Water. Thanks for the read.

SARATOGA SPRINGS CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT PARENT UNIVERSITY TO HOST PROGRAMS ON RESPECT AND CHARACTER

A Parent University program titled “Act with Respect Always” is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The program will be held in the Saratoga Springs High School Library. Coach Rich Johns, President of Act With Respect Always, will share what inspired him to begin Act With Respect Always. Stressing honesty, teamwork, empathy, kindness, love and acceptance, Coach Johns strives to make everyone aware of their daily actions. He introduces to each audience the 99 and the 1, a personal character assessment plan. Speaking to mindfulness he hopes to have everyone constantly draw ‘reflection’ towards themselves to be as kind as possible. With this knowledge, each person can access their own character “score” every minute of every day. In addition, a Parent University program titled “Character Education in our District” is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. The program will be held in the Maple Avenue Middle School Large Group Room on the second floor. Character Education is part of the everyday work of the Saratoga Springs City School District. In our schools you will regularly see classrooms lessons that reinforce monthly character traits, character education awards and assemblies, and opportunities for students to further good character through clubs and projects. In addition, the District’s PBIS initiative continues to build a culture where positive behavior is reinforced. Parent University programs are generally designed with parenting adults in mind, community members, students, district staff and teachers are also welcome at events. All events are free and no registration is required for programs unless otherwise specified.

timesunionjobfair.com DECIDING IF A CAREER CHANGE IS FOR YOU While losing weight and quitting smoking remain among the most popular New Year’s resolutions each year, many more people resolve to change careers at the dawn of a new year. Changing careers is a significant step, especially for men and women who are firmly established in their fields. A career change can be just as rewarding and life-changing as losing weight or quitting smoking, and there are some things professionals might want to consider before resolving to change careers in the new year. Changing careers vs. switching jobs Changing careers and switching jobs are not the same thing, and some people may want the former while others may only be in need of the latter. A full-fledged career change may require returning to

school and a willingness to start from the bottom. A job change typically allows professionals to stay in their fields and move on to another position, whether it’s with their existing employer or with another company. Career trajectory The direction of a person’s career may also influence whether or not they want to make a career change. Established professionals mulling a career change should consider their willingness to start anew. Many midcareer professionals have worked for years to establish themselves in their fields and within their companies. Switching careers does not mean that experience and reputation is invaluable, but neither attribute may carry as much weight in a different line of work, and that can affect career trajectory and future earnings.

Effects on others Established professionals must also consider the effect that a career change may have on their families. Married mid-career professionals should discuss changing careers with their spouse, and even their children if the kids are old enough to understand. Discuss the pros and cons of changing careers and the impact that making such a change may have on your family’s daily life. Will the family have to move? Will the family lifestyle change dramatically, if at all? Spouses and children may feel better about the change knowing they were involved in the decision, and talking things through with family may help working professionals determine if changing careers is the best decision for them. Long-term goals Long-term goals are another thing to consider

before making a career change. That’s especially true for mid- or late-career professionals who may already have made significant progress toward achieving their long-term goals. Discuss long-term goals with your spouse or significant other and how changing careers might affect those goals. Long-term goals can change, and while the ability to realize those goals might not weigh heavily in your decision regarding a career change, understanding how such a change might affect your retirement or other late-life plans can only help you make the most informed decision possible. Many people resolve to change careers at the dawn of a new year. But such a decision requires the careful consideration of a host of factors.

MAKE YOUR VEHICLE LESS VULNERABLE TO THEFT Vehicle theft is something few people imagine happening to them. Until it does. While many motorists may think technology has done wonders to curb vehicle theft, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that a motor vehicle is stolen every 46 seconds in the United States. Auto theft is sometimes mistaken as a victimless crime. After all, insured motorists are typically reimbursed for stolen vehicles, and drivers whose cars are returned after being stolen can simply submit a claim to have any damages paid for by their insurers. But this characterization of auto theft is untrue, as all motorists, whether their car’s been stolen or not, pay for auto theft. The Insurance Bureau of Canada notes that each year auto theft costs Canadians roughly $1 billion. That figure includes the $542 million insurers pay to fix or replace stolen vehicles each year. Those costs are ultimately passed on to customers, who then indirectly pay for the actions of car thieves. Curbing auto theft is not necessarily the job of drivers, but there are things motorists can do to reduce the likelihood that their car will be stolen by opportunistic thieves. • Avoid keyless ignition systems. Drivers who live in areas that are vulnerable to auto theft may want the

peace of mind that comes with traditional keyed ignition systems instead of the more modern and flashy keyless ignition systems. While vehicles with keyed ignition systems are stolen every day, some thieves may find it easier and quicker to steal cars or trucks with keyless ignition systems. Thieves can copy keys used in traditional ignition systems, but that process may require access to the original key and tends to take longer than it takes for thieves to reprogram keyless ignition systems once they’re inside a car. Reprogramming devices are not legal, but they are available and can be used to shut off automobile alarm systems in a matter of seconds.

passengers getting into and out of nearby vehicles. Others may simply not have the patience to find parking spots in well-lit areas close to home or storefronts. But thieves may target vehicles parked nowhere near foot or automobile traffic. Always park in parking garages or other well-lit areas, which deter thieves from breaking in and driving away with your vehicle.

• Lock your vehicle at all times. One of the simplest ways to protect a vehicle from prospective thieves is to always lock the windows and doors, even when you’re inside the vehicle. Auto thieves like things to go quickly and smoothly, and locked doors and rolled up windows only complicate things for thieves. Get in the habit of locking the vehicle when you’re driving, as unlocked doors make it easier for carjackers to surprise unsuspecting motorists. • Park smart. Some motorists like to park far away so their vehicles are not at risk of being dinged or scratched by inattentive drivers and

Vehicle theft remains a problem even as technology has done much to prevent it. But drivers can take steps to reduce their risk of being victimized by car thieves.

CLASSIFIEDS • Etch the VIN onto your windows. Car thieves are not in the auto theft business so they can build a fleet of stolen cars. Upon stealing a car, many car thieves head right for a chop shop, which is a place where stolen cars are disassembled and then sold for parts. By etching the VIN, or vehicle identification number, of your car or truck on your vehicle’s windshield or windows, you may be making your car less attractive to prospective thieves and the chop shops they do business with.

DID YOU KNOW? Various factors guide a person’s decision when buying a vehicle. What one person finds attractive may not appeal to another buyer. One buying trend that has emerged among American car buyers is their prefer-

ence for a certain body type. According to analysis of new vehicle retail registrations by IHS Automotive in 2014, SUVs and crossovers accounted for 36.5 percent of the new vehicle market, versus 35.4 percent for sedans. Consumers are increasingly drawn to attributes like higher ground clearance, more interior space, stronger towing capacity, and higher seat positions. Sedans still draw attention, but they’re losing ground to larger vehicles, resulting in a major shift in the automotive market. The study also found that pickup trucks

and hatchbacks have lost more share in the past few years than any other vehicle categories. 2007 Honda Accord EX Loaded, low mileage, 58K original miles. 1 owner. Excellent cond. $8000. 441-3229.
