Many homeowners may not know that pruning trees in the winter can benefit some trees. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they won’t bleed sap when pruned at this time of year like they will at other times of year.

In addition, many varieties of trees are less likely to attract disease or insects if pruned in the winter. Oak trees, for example, emit a strong odor when pruned, and that odor can attract a type of beetle that causes oak wilt. But this type of beetle hibernates in the winter, making this the ideal season to prune oak trees.

Before pruning trees, regardless of the time of year, homeowners should learn the types of trees on their property and when the ideal pruning season is for each type of tree. Pruning also may depend on climate, so speak with a local gardening or landscaping professional to determine when is the best time to prune the trees on your property. Once the time has come to prune, keep the following tips in mind to maintain healthy and aesthetically appealing trees.

* Remove limbs that appear to be competing for space. Tree limbs that are crossing, rubbing or growing parallel to one another can be pruned. Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs.

* Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned. * Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s limbs will grow outward, not toward the ground. * Remove dead limbs. Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead, broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning.

* Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branches and/or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping leaves a tree susceptible to disease and insect infestation, and homeowners who top trees to prevent them from getting any larger should know that topping actually promotes the growth of smaller, weaker branches that eventually grow as tall, if not taller, than the original branches before the tree was topped. Topping also decreases a tree’s life expectancy.

Prep Work Important Before Painting Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-to-date, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank. Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project. But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin. * Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint. In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities. * Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be masked by paint. Before adding a new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint. * Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake. * Prepare your paint. Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint before using it. In addition, even if you don’t plan to use a roller when painting, do not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier to hold than a small bowl, and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a potentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been removed from the can, replace the lid so dust and other impurities do not settle in the can.

the front door can really set the tone. Fall is also a good time to think about flowers. You won’t have the vibrancy of spring flowers, but you can dramatically alter the way that your home is perceived with several pots of mums.

The kinds of small changes you can make in the fall are only limited by your imagination. Shop flea markets, discount stores and thrift stores with an eye out for inexpensive items than can be combined to make a stunning display in your home. You don’t have to make major changes to make a major impact on the appearance of your home.

* Purchase painter’s tape. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter. Painting can be an inexpensive and fun way to upgrade a home’s interior. But even though painting does not require the technical know-how of more large-scale home improvement projects, it still requires some prep work and attention to detail to ensure the job is done right.

Small Changes Make Big Differences This Fall By Sam Erickson Usually, the term “home improvement” leads people to think about the physical structures of the place—plumbing, insulation and wiring—but you can improve the look and feel of your home this fall with just a few small changes. You don’t have to sign any paperwork with a contractor or spend a lot of money in order to make these changes. Consider changing the colors of your accent pieces. Everyone decorates for Christmas, and having a few pieces of fall that you procure this year and keep from year to year can help bring the outside feeling in. Fall leaves, holly and vegetables like pumpkins and squash will immediately trigger warm associations in your home. Got a big elm in your front yard? When the leaves start to change colors, bring in the best-looking ones, dry them out and arrange them on a coffee or accent table. You could also string them up into the chandelier above your dining room table, adding visual height to the room. You can create a wall grouping with fall flair anywhere in your home. Gathering a number of small frames from second-hand stores, you can add whatever items you find that remind you of fall. These might be leaves, swatches of color or even sayings that you have typed and printed out. A cluster allows you to make dramatic change in a small space. Clustering smaller items will add visual interest and encourage the eye to move around the room, making it appear larger. Consider the front of your home. This is the first thing that people will see as they approach for the holidays, and fall is a good time to spruce up your entry or vestibule. A fall wreath on

Things To Consider When Shed Shopping

FALL CLEAN UP BEGINS WITH

Storage sheds can be invaluable for people who do not have a garage or basement in which to store their outdoor tools and equipment. Sheds also can be a boon to anyone looking to increase the storage space they have at home.

– SALES Prefabricated and made-to– SERVICE 69 Traver Road • Wilton, NY order sheds are available for – SUPPLIES 587-5152 all different budgets and storYour Home Town Stihl Dealer Since 1976 age needs. Buyers also can choose among build-to-suit kits that can be ordered online or from various retailers.

One of the first decisions homeowners need to make when shopping for a storage shed is how much space they need. Think about what you need to house in the shed. Will it hold shovels and the patio umbrella, or will it need to be larger to accommodate a lawn mower? Knowing what you intend to use the shed for will enable you to pick the appropriate size. Another thing to consider is how long you plan to use the shed. If this is merely a transitional storage building to bide your time until your garage renovation is complete, you may not need an expensive structure made of top-of-the-line materials. If you have a long lifetime planned for this shed, you will want a durable structure and might want to increase your budget.

Before buying a shed, find out if your town, city or province has any zoning rules about sheds. You may need to plan a trip to the municipal building and learn the building codes about erecting a shed. In order to protect the safety and integrity of the area, many towns and cities have specific zoning and building laws that need to be followed. A shed of a certain size may require a permit to be built, and knowing this information in advance can save you from taking down the shed and redoing the work at a later date.

Once you know the building codes, you can begin to shop around for a shed. Sheds can vary widely in price. A small, vertical lean-to shed may start out around $350, while a larger, more intricate structure can cost between $2,000 and $3,000. Cost may play a role in the shed you ultimately choose, especially if you are on a fixed budget.

Available materials also should be studied when buying a shed. While an aluminum shed may not be the most aesthetically appealing option, aluminum sheds tend to be affordable and durable. Wood sheds are available in all different styles and can be very attractive. However, they will have to be maintained to prevent rot and insect infestation. Wood sheds also can be expensive. Vinyl sheds may be the best of both worlds, as they are often durable and require little maintenance. When shopping, consider if you have the skillset to assemble the shed yourself. You can save a considerable amount of money when buying a kit and assembling the shed yourself. Having a shed built off-site and then delivered, or hiring a carpenter to come and build a shed, may cost you just as much in labor as in materials.

Keep in mind that sheds displayed in a warehouse store or outside at a home improvement retailer may seem smaller than they will when erected in your yard. Measure your space carefully to ensure that the shed will blend in and not be an eyesore in the yard. Shrubbery can be planted around the shed to help camouflage it, and the shed also can be color-coordinated with the house to make it appear more cohesive.

The foundation of the shed also needs to be considered. Sheds can rest on cinder blocks, poured concrete or crushed stone. Check with the shed manufacturer as to the best foundation material, and factor that expense into your purchase. An attractive, functional and affordable shed can be an asset to a home. It provides extra storage space for outdoor equipment, which can free up room in a garage or basement.

The biggest advantage associated with frameless shower enclosures is that they can add to the overall value of your home if they’re done right. Here are some additional reasons to consider a frameless shower for your new or remodeled bath.

Gold Buyers of NY

* They’re fashionable. Frameless shower enclosures open a world of possibilities because they perfectly complement durable, high-style surfaces used in the bath such as tile, marble and granite. They also provide a great way to show off distinctive shower heads, faucets and fixtures. Finally, because of their openness and transparency, frameless shower enclosures can make your bath feel bigger than it really is. * They’re versatile. Frameless doors can be designed to fit any space, making them ideal for bathrooms large and small. And they don’t have to be boxy -- frameless shower enclosures can be circular, oval or triangular. Even standard square or rectangular enclosures can be dressed up with an artfully bowed, patterned or etched glass door. * They’re durable. Frameless shower enclosures look elegant, but one of their most redeeming qualities is toughness. Standard shower glasses can range in thickness from 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch, which makes them sturdy, structurally sound and safe. Watertight seals prevent leakage, and because there is little to no metal used in frameless enclosures, homeowners never have to worry about replacing corroded parts.

* They’re easy to live with. Let’s face it: we all want to live in our homes for as long as we can. Frameless shower enclosures are a great way to let your home age with you because the entry can be leveled with the floor to create easy access as you become older and less mobile. And frameless glass shower enclosures don’t become passe -- they offer a great way to meld timeless style with ageless accommodation. * They’re easy to clean. With frameless shower enclosures, there are fewer nooks and crannies where dirt and grime can accumulate, making them easier to clean than other shower styles. For an added level of clarity and sparkle, homeowners should request Clarvista glass by PPG. The coating for Clarvyour ista glass is fused to the glass, which makes the surface almost impervious to corrosion from water deposits, humidity, soap scum and household cleaners. Simply wipe the wet glass every few days with a dry towel or squeegee, and your shower enclosure can look as new as the first day you had it installed.

GET READY FOR WINTER! Clear The Deck: Winter’s Coming By Sam Erickson

The site of so many good times in the summer, your deck won’t see a lot of action through the winter, but to make sure it is in good shape for the coming summer, it’s good to prepare your outdoor area in the fall. Space Heater Safety Space heaters can be an effective method of supplemental heat when the weather outside gets cold, but the Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that space heaters can cause fires and lead to burns and, when using electrical heaters, may cause electrocution from faulty wiring. When operating a space heater, it is important to follow some safety guidelines. * Keep the heater at least 3 feet away from any drapery, bedding and flammable material. * Turn off the heater when you leave the room.

* Keep the heater on a level surface that is hard and non-flammable. * Don’t leave the space heater on all night while you are sleeping. * Never use a portable propane space heater designed for camping outdoors inside a home. * Make sure smoke alarms in a home have been tested and batteries have been replaced to protect yourself in the event of a space heater-related fire.

Your first step is to clean your deck thoroughly. Fungus and mildew can build up over the summer, especially in the shade or under potted plants where the deck doesn’t dry out for long periods of time. Dirt and rust stains can come from boots or your patio furniture. Through the seasons, you’ll learn your deck and you’ll know where you’ll have to clean each year.

In order to properly maintain your deck, you’ll want to manage the materials properly. Composite materials require a different kind of maintenance on a different schedule than a cedar plank deck. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations on how to use each product, cleaning all of the grime before you get started with anything else.

While it may seem counterintuitive, the first thing that you’ll want to do is to strip away the finish that has deteriorated or you don’t want any more. Again, be sure that you are using the right product for your cleaning. Try a small test area where the material won’t be visible, just in case there is a mistake. Many chemicals in deck repair and maintenance can be toxic or damaging. Make sure you are using the right protective equipment and are careful with any excess or spills. Keep children and pets away from the deck while these chemicals are in use.

Once the deck is cleaned and stripped, it is time to reapply the finish or stain. Some composite materials will never require this kind of maintenance, but solid cedar decks will need it much more regularly. Finally, you’ll want to seal the deck with an approved water-repellant. As snow and ice accumulate through the winter months, this protective coating will keep your deck protected through the winter and spring. Water is the enemy of wood, causing it to crack, warp or split as it goes through natural freeze-and-thaw cycles.

If you’ve ever repaired or replaced a deck, you know that it can come at some considerable time and expense. A little bit of maintenance each year can save you a tremendous hassle, and your deck will be ready for those great times in the spring and all summer long.

The thinnest house in New York City, a city known for high real estate costs and compact dwellings, is located in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan. Now known as the Millay House, a name honoring its one-time resident, the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, the house was built in 1873 and is a mere 9.5 feet wide. It is sandwiched into a space that once served as a carriage alley. While Millay House certainly is compact, a home in Warsaw, Poland, is only four feet wide and, at its thinnest, is only 29.3 inches. The residence, called the Keret House, was built in a crack between two buildings. The entrance is in the rear of the home and features an entry hatch and a foldable, remote control-operated ladder.

* Take inventory of dark spots. A room may be dark because it simply does not have a layout conducive to brightness. Is a wall blocking light from reaching a portion of the room? Think about changing the room’s layout or even making structural changes to improve light distribution. The addition of a small window on a south- or west-facing wall can greatly improve natural light. Using mirrors can also reflect light where it is needed.

* Invest in skylights or solar tubes. Both skylights or solar tubes enable light to enter a home from above. Skylights are larger and require considerably more work to install, while solar tubes are more low-profile and can be put into rooms that do not abut the roofline, such as those obstructed by attic space. The tubular cylinders are installed between the roof and the ceiling and carry light through a reflective tube to the room below. Diffusers on tubular daylighting devices scatter the rays so the light doesn’t cast harsh shadows, and UV filters can help protect furniture from discoloring.

New windows may allow more natural light to enter a home.

* Trim shrubs and trees. If trees and bushes are blocking light from entering your home, trim them to enable dappled light to come through. Deciduous trees that will naturally lose their leaves come autumn can be planted on sunny areas of the property. This way in the summer months they will shade the house and keep it cooler, while in winter more sun will stream in when the leaves are shed.

* Create a three-season room. Make a spot in the home where sun will be at a premium. A solarium or greenhouse attached to the home can be a warm and sunny spot. Increasing natural light in a home can improve feelings of well-being and also reduce energy consumption during daylight hours.

According to the National Institutes of Health, some people experience serious mood changes during the winter months. Dubbed seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, this condition may be effectively treated with light therapy. Exposure to more light can alleviate fatigue, loss of interest and sad or anxious feelings. Homeowners looking to increase the natural light in their homes, be it for medical or aesthetic reasons, can do so in a variety of ways. * Keep the drapes open. Opening blinds and curtains as far as they will go allows as much light to shine in without having to do major home renovations or spend any money at all. Homeowners concerned about privacy can install a window film that allows viewing from the inside only. * Clean the windows. Dirty windows obstruct sunlight from entering the home. They also can make a home appear unkempt. Spend a free day cleaning the windows so that they’ll let ample light in. * Install seamless or low-profile windows and doors. Seamless sliding doors enable a large amount of light to enter the home. Such doors can replace an entire wall to brighten up a dark area of a home. The more windows and doors a home has, the brighter it will be.

Winterizing Your Pipes By Sam Erickson Not everyone has to worry about pipes freezing in the winter, but much of America does. If the temperature in your area routinely drops to 20 degrees or below, it will be worth your time and energy to prepare and maintain your home to prevent your pipes from bursting. Pipes burst when an ice blockage forms and the pressure builds up behind it. While you won’t have ice shooting into your home, you’ll have all of the water that has built up behind it—in the basement, in the crawlspace or through the walls of your house. Proper insulation is the first step to preventative maintenance. The unheated areas of your house are the most important to insulate. Attics, basements and crawlspaces are the general culprits. Polyethylene or fiberglass tubes are available to keep the cold out of pipes. You’ll want to measure the diameter of the pipes and purchase the correct size. This will ensure you have to make only one trip to your home supply store. Pipe insulation is carried in most big box stores and in all hardware and home supply stores. It can be cheaper in the spring months—prices tend to go up as the temperatures drop and demand goes up. You will want to be particularly aware of any pipes that have been stressed by previous freezing or have recently been installed. If you experience significant periods of severe winter weather, you might consider wrapping pipes in heat tape before insulating them. The instructions for installation are very specific, and it is essential to follow them. If you don’t, the heat tape can lead to fires. Heat tape also has to be checked regularly to ensure it is still functioning effectively. Once you’ve taken all of the prerequisite steps, you’ll still have some maintenance to do to ensure you don’t wake up in a puddle. When the temperature is expected to drop, turn on your faucets, particularly those that flow along outside walls and are the most exposed to the cold. This will reduce the pressure and can prevent an explosion in the pipes, even if an ice dam does form. Opening cabinets that contain pipes will let the warm air from the rest of your house flow onto the pipes, keeping them warmer. You can take one more step and check the basement and garage for any leaks. Look particularly for places where cold air could be directly applied to pipes from cracked windows, gaps or areas where the insulation has worn away. Applying your general insulation strategies will save money on your energy bill, and it can also keep your pipes warmer and delay or prevent a freeze.

Replacement projects proved especially beneficial for homeowners, who likely also benefitted from a real estate market that finally started to stabilize after an extended period of economic uncertainty that heavily influenced both buyers and sellers.

While an economy on the rebound no doubt benefitted homeowners looking to recoup as much of their home improvement investment at resale as possible, other factors likely contributed as well. For example, homeowners surveyed for the 2013 report who added a backup power generator recouped more of their investment than in previous years. That’s likely because heavily publicized storms, such as Superstorm Sandy in late 2012, have forced homeowners and prospective homeowners to place a greater emphasis on being prepared for such storms. Among the upscale projects surveyed, none recouped more of a homeowner’s investment than replacing existing siding with fiber-cement siding. Homeowners who financed such a project recouped 79.3 percent of the project’s cost, placing it just ahead

Winterizing 101 How To Prepare Your Yard For Winter

Changing seasons can be tough on a lawn. Always exposed to the elements, lawns can fare especially poorly upon the arrival of winter, a season known for its harsh and unforgiving weather. Even the most perfectly manicured lawn can suffer at the hands of winter weather, causing homeowners to sit idly by and hope spring arrives that much sooner.

But as punishing as winter weather can be on a lawn, homeowners are not without recourse. Much like homeowners can take steps to help their lawns survive sizzling summer heat waves during the warmer months of the year, they also can take steps to help their lawns make it through the often stormy weather synonymous with winter.

* Don’t procrastinate. Putting off the process of winterizing a lawn can put that lawn in jeopardy. Lawns will turn dormant the closer you get to winter, and they may reject the nutrients found in fertilizer as a result. Those nutrients will prove valuable once spring weather returns, so start the winterization process in early fall so the lawn has sufficient time to absorb nutrients and strengthen itself for the seasons to come.

* Treat trouble spots. Summer can be even harder on a lawn than winter, especially for those lawns located in regions where heat waves and drought are common. In such instances, certain spots on the lawn seem to be hit harder than others, and those spots should get special attention when winterizing the lawn. Check the soil’s pH levels before fertilizing or applying any treatments. Such a test will reveal which spots need the most attention, and treating trouble spots now will make spring lawn care that much easier.

* Aerate the property. Aerating can help a lawn recover after a long summer and help it survive the potentially harsh months that lie ahead. Aerating, which involves puncturing the soil or removing cores of soil from the ground, can restore a lawn to health by improving its drainage and allowing more water and air to reach the roots of the grass. Aerating also makes it easier for nutrients to penetrate the soil, which encourages a healthier lawn over the long haul. Aerators can be purchased or rented, but homeowners uncomfortable with the process may want to enlist a professional to tackle the job. Parents of small children who spend lots of time in the yard may need to aerate their lawn more than most, as heavy lawn traffic compresses the soil, a potentially harmful process that can be reversed via aeration.

* Take steps to strengthen the roots. Aerating promotes stronger roots, but homeowners might also want to find a winterizing product with potassium and phosphorous, both of which can strengthen roots. Different types of lawns will respond differently to certain winterizers, so discuss your options with a lawn care professional who can help you find the right fit for your property.

* Remove debris from the lawn. Debris left on a lawn over the winter can prove very harmful. Piles of debris left scattered around a lawn can suffocate the blades of grass, leading to long-term damage and a potentially unsightly lawn come the spring. In addition, piles of debris might make good homes for organisms that can damage the lawn. As fall moves into winter, periodically remove all debris, including leaves and branches fallen from trees.

2ways 2Save

* Make the lawn off-limits once the temperatures dip below freezing. A lawn should be off-limits once the ground freezes. Stepping on grass that has frozen will leave noticeable footprints, and walking on frozen grass can kill the turf. When winter arrives, people should avoid using the lawn as a shortcut into and out of your home and stick to driveways and sidewalks instead.

Tips For Unclogging Drains

e Clogged drains can be a nuisance. And if left untreated, that minor nuisance can turn into an expensive repair. n A number of different things can cause drains to clog. Food particles, hair, grease, soap residue, oil, and even a foreign object lodged in the drain can each cause a drain to clog. Before you have to call a plumber, there are steps to take that may get water flowing once more. Bubbles Galore

h Baking soda has many uses in the home. This versatile product can be used dislodge items in g drains. It is better to try baking soda when clogs are minor and water drainage is sluggish rather than waiting for the clog to get so bad that water is impenetrable.

When baking soda and common household vinegar are mixed together, they form a new chemical called carbonic acid. This acid immediately begins to degrade into carbon dioxide gas, which , produces foam and bubbles in the process. This bubbling action can upset the source of a clog in a pipe and dislodge particles that may be causing the water backup. Keep your face away from the drain as the smell of vinegar mixing with the baking soda may be unpleasant. l s Baking soda also can be mixed with salt and boiling water to break down grease that may be clogging drains. Repeatedly washing this mixture down drains can gently scour pipes and keep y water moving steadily. Plunge ahead

If a clog is especially stubborn, you may need to use a plunger. A plunger works by forcing the a energy you push on the plunger into the surrounding water, which then applies pressure against h the clog. Repeatedly forcing water against a clog can move it along until it frees up the drain.

Plunging can be messy, so wear old clothes when plunging. Make sure the head of the plunger is filled with water; otherwise, your work will be for naught. You may want to keep a separate plunger handy for sink work so you are not transferring bacteria and waste from a toilet plunger into the sink, especially in the kitchen. r

Pop and fizz Colas are loaded with phosphoric acid, which is more acidic than lemon juice and is also corrosive. This acid will fizz in the drain and break through any greasy, stubborn residue. It’s even effective at dissolving calcium deposits, which may be a byproduct of hard water. Snake it Some clogs are more stub-

born and require some extra elbow grease to fix. A pipe snake can push hair and other debris through the pipes until water can run free. They also can be used to pull the obstacle back up out of the drain. While there are snakes of various lengths, sometimes a small one that makes it just to the bend of the elbow trap can be sufficient. A snake is essentially a flexible piece of wire that is inserted in the pipe. It may have a coarse or wound end to ensnare a clog. Call a plumber Unless you feel confident taking pipes apart to check for and clear out clogs and then reassembling everything, you may need to call a plumber if the clog will not relent. It may be lower in the system than at house level, especially if there are clogs in multiple sinks or appliances in the home. Multiple clogged drains may be indicative of a more serious problem. Many clogs can be alleviated with simple household items. Serious clogs may require the expertise of a plumber.

How To Make A Home Handicap Accessible Many homeowners have found themselves scrambling to make their homes handicap accessible after a sudden injury or illness. In addition, some homeowners have found themselves looking to make adjustments to their homes in anticipation of welcoming elderly, less mobile relatives into their homes. Converting a home into a handicap-accessible space can seem like a daunting task that requires adjustments to nearly every part of the house. While the extent of those adjustments depends on the individual who needs to be accommodated, some of the areas homeowners must address when making their homes handicap accessible are universal regardless of the individual’s condition. Entryways A home’s entryways often must be addressed when making the home more handicap accessible. Portable ramps can be an affordable option and are often an ideal for those who only need to make temporary adjustments, such as when a resident suffers an injury that requires he or she spend some time in a wheelchair. When the adjustments will just be temporary, a folding wheel-

chair might be necessary, as the doorways might not be able to fit a standard wheelchair that doesn’t fold.

When adjustments figure to be permanent, homeowners might need to expand the doorways in their homes. Contractors typically recommend expanding doorways to at least 32 inches, which provides some maneuverability when wheelchairs, which are typically between 24 and 27 inches wide, are entering the home. Doorways at the most commonly used entryways, including front doors and doors to the bathrooms as well as the individual’s bedroom, will likely need to be widened. Bathroom

The bathroom might be the area of the home that needs the most attention. Slippery conditions common to bathrooms can make things especially difficult for people in wheelchairs or with disabilities. Grab bars should be installed in bath tubs and shower stalls and next to toilets.

But grab bars aren’t the only adjustment homeowners should make in the bathroom as they attempt to make a home more handicap accessible. Safety treads, which can provide a secure, slip-free surface on the floors of showers and tubs, can be installed. Add a hand-held shower head to the shower stall to make it easier for those with a disability to shower. Portable transfer seats, which enable wheelchair-bound men and women to transition from their chairs to showers and bathtubs, can be purchased and kept in or near the bathroom. Water fixtures

An often overlooked adjustment homeowners must make when transforming their homes into handicap-accessible spaces concerns the sinks throughout the home. Disabled persons may find it difficult to access faucets on sinks throughout the home, especially when there are vanity cabinets beneath the sinks. Replacing such sinks with pedestal sinks can improve maneuverability, but make sure such sinks are lower to the ground than standard pedestal sinks. A sink that’s just a few inches lower than a standard sink is considerably more accessible to people in wheelchairs. Closets

Closets are rarely handicap accessible. Homeowners can address this issue by creating multilevel closet spaces so individuals can place their clothes at accessible heights. Closet shelves can be lowered and doors can be widened so disabled persons can easily manage their wardrobes. In addition, consider installing a light inside the closet and make sure the light switch can be easily reached from a wheelchair. Making a home more handicap accessible can be a significant undertaking, but many of the adjustments homeowners must make are small in scale and won’t take long to complete.

Think Big For Your Home By Sam Erickson

Fall is the time when kids go back to school and people begin to look forward to the holidays. With the onset of winter weather, you’ll be spending a lot more time indoors. Everyone has their usual list of fall home maintenance needs—cleaning the gutters, clearing the patio, adding insulation where needed—but this year, you might think big and consider expanding the space where you’ll be spending all of those winter days and nights. Here are some ideas. Installing skylights is a great addition for the winter. They bring in natural light, reducing the need for electricity. They also bring in heat, reducing heating costs. More light can also make a house appear larger, giving a facelift to your existing home at minimal cost. If you are having major roof repairs done or a whole new roof installed, this is the perfect time to install those skylights. Because they are already there, many roofing companies will cut their installation price in half to install skylights. Finish the basement. Most homes have unfinished basements which are often used for laundry and a place to collect stuff that doesn’t belong anywhere else in the house. Really, the basement is a blank slate in most homes. You could create a game room with a pool table, a music room to bring your band together or a playroom to send the kids to when it gets cold and wet outside. One benefit to refinishing a basement is that you can do a lot of the work yourself if you have the tools and the technical know-how. Refinishing a basement adds value and can help update an older home, giving it a modern feel. In older homes, the kitchen was often overlooked and treated as a purely functional space. In modern American homes, however, the kitchen is often the centerpiece of the home, and remodeling your old, stodgy kitchen into a warm, welcoming space can provide you with loads of benefits. People spend more time in their kitchens in the cold winter months, and a remodel can make it a place you want to be. Winter is the perfect time for a remodel if you have kids because they will be back in school and not underfoot. Additions can be expensive and keeping the budget in mind is essential as you prepare. If you are planning on staying in the home for a while, you can think of these as investments in your quality of life. If you are planning on selling your home soon, you can think of these as ways to make your home stand out from the crowd. While it may be too late this year to get on a contractor’s schedule, it’s never too late to start putting your planning into high gear.

The Fall Home Care Checklist By Sam Erickson

Maybe it’s going back to school, maybe it’s the shorter days or maybe it’s the blinding lights signaling the holiday season ahead, but fall home improvement projects often get tossed aside or neglected in favor of more exciting, interesting or pressing activities. This short checklist will help guide you to the most important elements to monitor and maintain in your home, keeping you and your family safe and maximizing the life of your home. When the time changes, it’s time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors. Making sure they are still operational is quick and easy and will bring peace of mind for another six months. Similarly, every year, you should check your fire extinguishers to ensure that they have the

proper pressure. Look for dents and dings, and make sure the pin is in the correct position. Fall is a great time to do this, as you’ll be spending more time indoors. If the pressure has fallen too low, find a professional to recharge them for you.

Most people don’t use their chimney in the summer, and soot can build up over the course of a year. Other debris like birds’ nests or even leaves can create unsafe blockages. Have your chimney inspected by a professional if you plan to use it through the winter.

Small animals will be looking for a warm place to sleep, and your home is a great option for them. Perform routine pest control in your area, watching out for places where animals might get into your home.

Most importantly, you’ll want to have your furnace and heating system checked by a professional. This can save you big money on your heating bill, and an inspection can ensure that there isn’t a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide in your home. Furnace and air filters should be changed regularly to maximize safety and efficiency. If you are planning on using space heaters, humidifiers or de-humidifiers, they are a great addition to your checklist. Clean them off and inspect the heating and electrical elements for safety, particularly if they have been out of sight in storage for the warmer months.

Finally, check the caulking around your home. Caulk is a cheap compound that anyone can apply, and it will reduce the amount of energy loss from your home and prevent water damage to flooring, walls and windows in the kitchen and bathroom.

This is a big list—and it’s certainly not comprehensive—but all of these things can be accomplished in one weekend day. Spending minimal time improving and protecting your home for the winter season will provide great returns.

Bathroom renovations are second to kitchen renovations on the list of the top remodeling projects to increase home value. The popularity of bathroom renovations and their ability to transform a space has left many homeowners wondering if there are any easy and affordable ways to change the look of their bathrooms.

While “easy” is a relative term, there are ways homeowners willing to make certain concessions can keep the work and cost of a bathroom renovation to a minimum. Resurface

When possible, covering up what you have in the bathroom is much less expensive and less labor-intensive than tearing out existing fixtures and floors and replacing them anew. Resurfacing can extend to refinishing bathtubs to installing shower liners. Those who have unsightly walls or wallpaper that they’re just not ready to remove may consider using wainscotting to cover a portion of the room or even tiling entire walls. It is important to note that resurfacing and covering up items in the bathroom should only be reserved for cosmetic fixes. If something needs to be replaced because it is damaged or mildewcovered, then covering it up is only hiding the problem and asking for more work in the long run. Scale back on materials

One way to save money on a bathroom renovation project is to choose less expensive materials. For example, you may not need to install travertine or marble flooring in a space where less expensive flooring like vinyl is adequate. Advancements in vinyl flooring have enabled this affordable material to mimic the look of more expensive materials at a fraction of the cost.

Construction Quick Tip: Build An Eco-Friendly Home To Withstand Extreme Weather

When redoing tile on walls and shower enclosures, many domestically-produced tiles rival the looks of more expensive imported alternatives. You may be able to save more by buying tile in bulk and using the remainder in other applications around the house.

(MS) -- Did you know: The continental United States has warmed by about 1.3oF over the last 100 years, although observers say the impact has been experienced differently from region to region. As a result, meteorologists are predicting a higher frequency of weather extremes, such as the two massive wind and rain systems that collided last fall during Hurricane Sandy. On the brighter side, the home-building industry says it is already on target for delivering maximum occupant protection, pointing to an energy-saving concrete system that is popular right now in green construction. Locking together like Lego, the pre-assembled insulated concrete form (ICF) produces walls with hurricane and tornado impact-resistance up to 250 miles per hour. When compared to wood, these walls are far more sound- and fire-resistant and deliver energy savings and an improved indoor environment as well. By eliminating wood framing, all drafts, cold spots and potential mold growth are virtually eliminated, according to leading ICF supplier, Nudura, who note that homeowners are reporting savings of up to 70 percent on their energy bills. Make a note that an upgrade to concrete walls needs to be requested before construction begins. For builders, the newest efficiencies of this type require keeping up with latest technology and how to apply it. The switch to concrete walls represents just one of the major advancements in home construction today and more information is available online at www.nudura.com.

A new faucet or some new cabinet pulls can make the room look new and fresh without breaking the bank. Match finishes throughout the bathroom so everything will be cohesive. When shopping for a new shower head, choose a model that also conserves water. This way you will be making cosmetic and energy-saving renovations at the same time. DIY

Handling labor yourself instead of hiring workers can reduce the cost of bathroom remodels considerably. It is possible to buy fully assembled bathroom vanities and install them yourself. Even installing a new toilet is relatively easy with the help of a friend. There are a number of ways to make bathroom renovations a bit easier and more affordable. Even nominal changes can give the space an entirely different look and feel, which can make the room more enjoyable and help improve a home’s resale value in the process.

Do not underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint on any room in the house, including the bathroom. Dark, small spaces can be made to look more expansive with lighter colors. g They All Fall Down: Gutter Cleaning Tips s a By Sam Erickson It’s not a job that anyone looks forward to, but it’s one of the most important things you can do in the fall for your home. Cleaning the gutters can take a little while, but if they aren’t cleaned, water can build up next to your home and cause rot on wooden surfaces, pull off the gutters from the weight or allow ice dams to build up, potentially ruining your roof. While there’s no simple way to clean gutters, a few tips can make the job easier and ensure your safety.

You’ll need a few supplies to get started. There are all kinds of tools that you can use these days, . including attachments to a shop vacuum, extension poles or even robots, but the simplest, most efficient way to do it is still by hand. You’ll want to wear work gloves when cleaning gutters to protect your hands from sticks and other sharp objects and animal waste. Ladder safety is of paramount importance when cleaning gutters, and the best way to keep a ladder stable while working on it is to have someone hold it at the bottom. Because you’ll need to be up at the height of the gutters, you’ll want to have a stand-off for your ladder, keeping it from damaging your gutters in the process.

If you don’t have a ladder yourself, then it might be time to invest in one. Better yet, see if you can borrow a neighbor’s. Of course, they’ll be more willing to lend you their tools if you offer to help them with their own work. That way, you can trade time for money and get to know your s neighbor in the process.

Scoop the debris out. You can do that with your hands or a trowel. Tie a trash bag or compost bucket to your ladder to hold the refuse. Once you have the majority of the material out, take a garden hose, set it to the highest pressure you can and wash down the gutters towards the downg spout. You might then have to auger out the downspouts to keep them from backing up. If you haven’t done it yet and live in an area of heavy debris, consider installing leaf guards at the top e of your downspouts to prevent debris from entering. If you have large, mature trees around your home, you might have to clean more than once each season. If you’re unable to do the job yourself, look into having a neighbor or professional handyman do the work for you. A small amount of effort keeping those gutters clean can save you significant money in the long run.

Get Out The Blanket For Your House By Sam Erickson

With colder temperatures coming, you might be thinking about making some additions that will help your home and your pocketbook get through the winter unscathed. Many people automatically think of drafty places in the home like doorsills or older windows. It’s a great idea to pay attention to these, but insulation actually has a much greater effect. Rather than a quick draft, poor insulation is like a slow sieve, leaking energy at every surface of your home. Fall is the perfect time to install more insulation in your home. The first step is to find out how much insulation you actually have. Crawl up in to your attic and look at the depth of the insulation there. That can offer you a clue about the quality of the rest of the insulation in your home. There are also numerous organizations that will come out and do a home energy audit for you. Having an energy audit is a good idea for a number of reasons, including the fact that it will reveal the quality of insulation in hard-to-check places like inside your walls.

These days, you’ve got several options for home insulation. Most people think of giant rolls of pink, and these rolls or batts are still readily available. Made of fiberglass or rock wool, they are easy to install and relatively cheap. They are also cut to standard widths to fit between wall studs or floor joists in the ceiling. You might also look into professional installation of loose-fill, rigid foam or foam-in-place insulation. Loose-fill insulation can be blown into place, making it useful for odd-shaped places like roofs or ducting where it can be difficult to install other kinds of insulation. Rigid foam can be applied to exterior walls and has a higher R-rating based on thickness.

Each type of insulation is given an R-rating, essentially a measure of how much resistance to heat flow the product has. As you do your research, you’ll quickly learn the R-values of different types of insulation. Remember that these are based on depth as well, and the resistance to heat will change based on how much material you put into your house.

Each region of the country has different recommendations for the amount of insulation you should have, so check with your contractor before proceeding to maximize your investment. Insulation is one of the most effective ways you can reduce your energy expenditures, offering a much faster return on your investment than other options. In addition to keeping your home warm in the winter, insulation can keep the heat out in the summer, doubling your investment. Once you’ve completed your renovation, you can cozy up for the winter under the new blanket for your house.

Budget-Friendly Outdoor Renovation Ideas

improve the yard. This is easily achieved with inexpensive mulch and some vinyl edging. While cleaning up the yard, use a pressure washer to clean stains off of siding and patios and create a like-new appearance.

Homeowners are increasingly extending their living spaces outside the walls of their homes. Expansive and intricate stonework patios and decked-out outdoor kitchens are the kind of additions many homeowners dream of. Those with unlimited budgets can enjoy just about any look they desire, but many homeowners may not have the money to go all the way with their outdoor living spaces. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to create budget-friendly spaces that are functional, fun and eye catching.

End-of-season sales can also be the ideal opportunity to purchase big-ticket items like a pool, a hot tub or an outdoor fireplace/fire pit. Shoppers can learn when stores discount their merchandise to make room for new inventory and then use these sales as opportunities to save.

Decks and patios are popular gathering spots outside a home, and homeowners have numerous inexpensive options at their disposal when choosing patio materials. And those who can do their own labor when installing a patio can save a substantial amount of money. Instead of higherpriced composite or resin decks, homeowners can go with standard wood, which will need to be stained periodically. Scaling back the size of the deck means less materials to buy and less labor involved.

Sometimes saving means repurposing antiques or items found at garage sales. Thanks to the Internet, people can easily advertise items they no longer need or desire. A person can search for backyard items they need at a deep discount if they are fine with previously used materials. From patio furniture to masonry blocks to above-ground pools, patient homeowners can find just about any item they may need to upgrade their backyards.

The cost of patio blocks depends on the material and style. Poured concrete patios will cost less than placed blocks or stones because concrete is less labor-intensive. For those who desire the look of patio blocks without the cost, stamped concrete can mimic the look for less. Homeowners may not need to replace patio furniture, even if chairs and tables have seen better days. A can of spray paint can cover up any rusted areas or spots where paint has peeled off due to exposure to the elements. Updating cushions and purchasing a coordinating umbrella can revitalize the patio’s entire look. Also, very often stores run sales to clear out merchandise for new displays. Defining edges of planting borders and refreshing the landscape may be all that is needed to

Non-Profit Fundraising Opportunity from Home Made Theater SARATOGA SPRINGS - Home Made Theater, Saratoga’s resident theater company, is offering fellow non-profit organizations the opportunity to raise funds while enjoying an evening out at the theater. For each of HMT’s opening nights of the 2013-2014 season, a non-profit group can benefit from the sale of up to 100 tickets. The group will receive half of all box office sales completed using a special promotional code which can be used by members of the group and the general public. As an additional benefit, the participating organization may promote their organization by adding an insert to the opening night playbill or posting a sign in the Spa Little Theater lobby. The opening nights for HMT’s 2013-2014 season are as follows: Friday, October 11, 2013 for THE DROWSY CHAPERONE; Friday, December 13, 2013 for CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY; Friday, February 7, 2014 for WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION; and Friday, April 18, 2014 for BOEING BOEING. For a description of these shows, please visit the HMT web site at www.homemadetheater.org. Only one organization will be given this opportunity for each opening night, so contact HMT at 587-4427 or info@homemadetheater.org as soon as possible to secure your opening night.

Advice From The Pros: Do Not Neglect Auto Service

(MS) -- The average age of a personal vehicle on the road today is more than 11 years, according to recent news reports. In tough economic times, it’s natural to rein in spending. But the experts at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) warn that putting off routine auto maintenance or ignoring service intervals is false economy. Small issues can morph into more expensive repairs. For example, failure to replace worn brake pads or a faulty oxygen sensor -both relatively easy services for qualified auto technicians -- can result in expensive brake rotor service or costly replacement of the vehicle’s catalytic converter.

Frequently neglected items include oil changes, tire and brake service, wheel alignment, air and fuel filters, and transmission service, according to ASE-certified auto technicians.

Besides, a well-maintained vehicle gets better gasoline mileage, pollutes less, is safer to operate, and lasts longer than one that’s neglected, notes ASE. To help consumers choose a repair shop that fits their needs, ASE offers the following checklist: * Look for a neat, well-organized facility, with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to your own and modern equipment in the service bays. * Look for a courteous staff, with a service consultant willing to answer all of your questions. * Look for policies regarding estimated repair costs, diagnostic fees, guarantees, and acceptable methods of payment. * Ask if the repair facility specializes or if it usually handles your type of repair work. * Look for signs of professionalism in the customer service area, such as civic, community, or customer service awards. * Look for evidence of qualified technicians: trade school diplomas, certificates of advanced course work, and certification by ASE. * Look for the ASE sign or logo; it means the shop employs nationally certified technicians. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was founded in 1972 as a non-profit, independent organization dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians. ASE-certified technicians wear blue and white ASE shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their exact areas of certification. Their employers often display the blue and white ASE sign. Visit www.ase.com for seasonal car care advice and more.

Did You Know? The drive-in movie theater was the brainchild of Richard Hollingshead, Jr., an auto products sales manager at his father’s Whiz Auto Products store. Hollingshead wanted to combine his passion for automobiles with his love of films. After testing different parking configurations and imitating weather conditions in his own driveway to simulate the drive-in movie experience, Hollingshead filed for a patent for the drive-In theater. He received the patent on May 16, 1933. The first drive-in was opened on June 6, 1933, in Camden, N.J. The price of admission was $.25 for the car and each person inside. Drive-in theaters peaked in popularity in the 1950s, when there were roughly 5,000 drive-ins operating across the United States and Canada. According to Drive-Ins.com, currently there are about 365 drive-ins remaining in the United States and 55 in Canada.

Did You Know? According to the Federal Trade Commission, auto dealerships are not legally obligated to give preowned car buyers a three-day right to cancel their purchase. This means a sale is final once a preowned vehicle buyer signs all of the necessary documents. However, some dealerships do offer a return policy, though that offer will likely not be made unless the buyer inquires about it. When a dealer does provide the privilege of returning the vehicle in 72 hours, the policy may be referred to as a “money-back guarantee” or a “no questions asked return policy.” While many dealers are trustworthy and willing to work with their prospective customers, the FTC recommends all buyers contact their local consumer protection agency and state attorney general to determine if there are any unresolved complaints on file with regard to a particular auto dealer. This can help buyers find a reputable dealer and give the buyers some additional peace of mind, especially for those shopping for preowned vehicles that tend to carry more risk than a brand new car.
