Ivy Issues By Tresa Erickson Storybook pages are filled with images of stone cottages covered in ivy, making them appealing to the young and old alike. Who wouldn’t enjoy coming home to an old English cottage wrapped in ivy? Long, tender, green tendrils trailing down the side of a home can make for a lovely scene. Upon closer inspection of the crumbling mortar underneath, however, you might see that the old adage, “Looks can be deceiving,” is true. If not attended to carefully, ivy can make for some real damage to homes.

Ivy in general is a very tenacious, invasive plant. Once it starts growing, it can be difficult to stop, and once it gets its claws into the cracks and crevices of your home’s exterior, it can be very hard to remove. Ivy has been known to push its way into the smallest of spaces in brick mortar, siding, stucco and more, penetrating walls and windows, invading rooms and peeking out from behind electrical sockets.

Did You Know?

While it will push through cracks and crevices, ivy is not strong enough to make them. Solid, well-constructed surfaces such as masonry walls can handle it. Old, weak brick, dry-stacked walls, porous wood and any other areas prone to cracks and crevices, on the other hand, cannot. Such substances are highly susceptible to ivy, and once it takes hold and weaves its way throughout the structure, the damage can be vast, ranging from leaks to pest infestation to total loss.

Reducing energy consumption during the dog days of summer does not mean you have to turn off your air conditioner on sultry summer nights. Closing the shades during the daytime hours can keep sun from coming in and heating up your home, making it easier for your air conditioner to maintain a cooler temperature. Routinely cleaning the air conditioner’s filters is another way to reduce energy consumption, as clean filters will ensure the unit does not have to work as hard to maintain a cool temperature.

Pulling down the ivy may not be the right fix either. While it will prevent further growth, it may also lead to even greater damage. Boards, bricks, chunks of paint and stucco and who knows what else have been known to come down with every strand of ivy pulled. Entire wood structures have fallen down once the ivy holding them together was removed.

Homeowners that suspect damage due to ivy should not undertake the removal of it themselves. They should hire a professional to determine the best way to remove the ivy with the least amount of damage possible. They might also be able to repair any resulting damage. There is nothing wrong with having ivy in the landscape. It is best to contain it to well-constructed structures and keep it away from all gutters, trim and woodwork in general. Only then can homeowners rest assured that the ivy will not take a toll on the condition of their home.

More and more homeowners embracing a relatively new way to shower. Walk-in, or walk-behind, showers are doorless structures that are designed to give the shower a more open look. Walk-in showers are often appear larger than more traditional showers, and those that do take up more space do so to prevent water from spraying around the room. Though walk-in showers do not have doors, they do employ a glass partition to keep water in. Walk-in showers often give a bathroom a more modern look, but their role is more than aesthetic. In fact, many seniors find it is easier to get in and out of a walk-in shower, something that could reduce their risk of falling and suffering an injury.

Space In The Closet
By Tresa Erickson Are you in desperate need of a home office? Is that corner of your dining room table no longer doing the trick? Are your files and papers a jumbled mess simply because you have no place to put them? Well, then, it might be time to look around and find a more suitable place for your home office. Chances are you don’t have a spare room, or you would already be using it as a home office, right? How about a spare closet? Do you have an extra closet somewhere in the house that you could clean out and use for a home office? Many people in need of a home office turn to a closet. Adapting a closet into a home office takes some time and creative thinking. Most closets are small, so you have to use the space wisely. You will probably need a desk and some sort of shelving unit to house your supplies and equipment. You may purchase these from a closet design company or create your own.

FREE ESTIMATES

If designing your own desk, make sure you use quality lumber for the top or a thick piece of plywood that you can cover with laminate. You may also be able to use a solid-core door. You can purchase ready-made legs, create your own or use file cabinets to serve as the base. As for a chair, you can purchase one that folds down so you can keep it in the closet or use one that you can leave in the room when you are done working. You will probably need access to electricity, so if your closet doesn’t have any outlets, you may need to hire an electrician. If you have a computer, you may need to contact your phone or cable company to install an additional line in your closet so you can have Internet service.

Once you have the necessities in order, you can focus on storage. Make sure you take advantage of every available space, using shelves, stackable organizers, baskets and more. Consider using chalkboard or magnetic paint on the back wall to provide a place for writing or attaching notes.

“COME VISIT OUR SHOWROOM.....

The best part about a home office contained within a closet is you can shut the doors when your work is done. Of course, your closet doors may or may not suit your purposes. If they slide, they may only allow you access to one side. In that case, folding doors or curtains may be better.

202 USHERS ROAD, CLIFTON PARK … “THINK LOCAL-BUY LOCAL”

Whatever you choose, you can close up the space when you are done and never have to worry about someone dropping by and seeing your mess. The clutter of your home office will be contained behind closed doors.

Did You Know? Landscape fabrics are used to prevent weed growth while still allowing air, oxygen and water to flow to and from the soil. Landscape fabrics are a chemical-free way to prevent weed growth, endearing them to eco-friendly homeowners. Landscape fabrics, once laid, also are a far less labor-intensive method to prevent weed growth, as they can be effective for several years, during which homeowners can expect to perform little or no maintenance. In addition, many homeowners prefer landscape fabrics because they can help the soil effectively maintain moisture during dry periods, when gardens might otherwise be highly susceptible to drought. Once put down, landscape fabric can be covered with mulch to add aesthetic appeal.

Deer Deterrents By Tresa Erickson Deer are known for nibbling on plants, whether in the wild or in your garden. That’s right. If deer are hungry enough, they will not hesitate to come into your yard and have a bite. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to make your lawn and garden less tantalizing.

Play S w o b in a R ith Summer W

While hunger will drive deer to eat almost anything, there are some plants they will shy away from. Anything overly aromatic, bitter, coarse, fuzzy, poisonous or spiny will not appeal to them. Study the plants in your lawn and garden and consider replacing some of the ones that deer find extra tasty with ones they don’t. Common favorites among deer include azalea bushes, balsam and Fraser firs, berry plants, dogwoods, fruit trees, Norway maples, redbuds and yews. Deer also like to nibble on flowers, in particular chrysanthemums, clematis, daylilies, hyacinths, roses and tulips. They eat vegetables as well, most often beans, broccoli, lettuce, peas and sweet corn. Since you can’t replace every plant in your lawn and garden, you will probably want to incorporate some deterrents. Protect your individual plants by coating them with hot pepper or soap spray or encircling them with unappetizing substances, like blood meal, fabric softener, garlic, hair, mothballs, rotten fish heads, sewage or thorny branches. Fence in your garden on all sides, making sure the fence extends partly underground and stands eight feet tall. That way, the deer won’t be able to squeeze under it or jump over it. Deer detest bright light and loud noise, so don’t be afraid to set up floodlights or get out the firecrackers, noisemakers or whistles whenever you catch sight of a deer in your yard. You might also use electric wires or sprinklers to make deer turn the other way. Even with the best of efforts, you may still find some deer nibbling away in your lawn and garden. To distract them, consider planting some of their favorites in the far corner of your lawn and garden. They just might feast there and leave your prized plants alone.

Carpenter Wanted
By Tresa Erickson You are a do-it-yourselfer. You enjoy tackling projects around the house and spend many weekends doing so. While you are skilled in many areas, you most certainly are not a carpenter. You can’t cut a piece of wood straight, much less make the cabinets you need to house the entertainment components in your family room. You need a carpenter.

Stamped concrete is the affordable choice for an upscale finish, providing a genuine appearance with the durability you desire.

info@hoffmanstampedconcrete.com Did You Know? A new roof can be one of the more expensive repairs for homeowners. But homeowners don’t have to break the bank when it comes to replacing a roof, which can be made from a variety of materials that can vary greatly in price. Asphalt shingles are the most affordable roofing material and that budget-friendly price is one reason why asphalt shingles are so popular. The asphalt shingles of today are also durable, which was not always the case. Ceramic tiles are another roofing material, but these tend to be quite expensive. However, their price has made them quite rare, which might be attractive to prospective buyers when the time comes to sell the house. Durable and aesthetically appealing, metal roofing is another option that’s popular in areas they get heavy snowfall because snow does not build up on the metal like it might on other materials. The price of metal roofing varies significantly, so homeowners considering a metal roof should do some comparison shopping before making a decision. Slate tiles are another roofing material, but one that’s very labor-intensive to install and, as a result, costly as well. But slate tiles are very durable, in some cases lasting as long as half a century or more, so homeowners who install slate tile can rest easy knowing the roof they install now will likely be the last roof they ever pay for.

Carpenters generally fall into two categories: rough or finish. Rough carpenters specialize in building homes, particularly in framing them and making sure everything is level, square and plumb. Finish carpenters specialize in the detail work, installing trim, banisters and the like. Some finish carpenters specialize in building cabinets and furniture. They are known as cabinetmakers. Since you are interested in cabinets, you might want to look for a cabinetmaker or a finish carpenter who has experience in building cabinets. You should treat the process for hiring a carpenter just like you would for any other professional. Ask family and friends for recommendations, browse through listings in the newspaper and phone book, and check online. From these sources, draw up a list of potential candidates. Conduct phone interviews and find out about the carpenter’s skills, qualifications, availability and fees. Discuss the work you would like to have done and see if they are interested.

The information you gather from your phone interviews should help you narrow your list considerably. Then you can meet with each candidate face to face and find out more. Make sure you ask to see a sample of their work and get a list of references. Check out the references and find out what the customer did and did not like about the carpenter’s work. Discuss with the carpenter again the work you would like to have done and ask them to give you an estimate in writing. Once you find a carpenter you like, hire them and ask them to write up a contract for the work. This will ensure there are no misunderstandings. Work out a schedule with the carpenter and keep in contact with them to ensure they meet your expectations.

6 Home And Renovation Flicks There are so many people who are anxious to get knee-deep in home improvement projects. Still others are more than happy to leave the work to a professional and sit back and enjoy the results. Those who choose to hire a contractor can certainly get their fill of home improvement projects by watching films where homes or renovations are central to the plot. 1. “Money Pit”: No list would be complete without including this movie starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long, who attempt to renovate a mansion only to be met with disaster after disaster. 2. “The Notebook”: Nicholas Sparks’ novel turned into this unforgettable, romantic film is a love story at its core. However, the renovation of a Victorian home in the Carolinas is also central to the story and makes for amazing imagery. 3. “Poltergeist”: This movie showcases what can go wrong when a home takes on a life of its own as malevolent ghosts take over. 4. “Under the Tuscan Sun”: While renovating a home might be considered interesting, doing so in the remote beauty of the Italian countryside makes for a much more visually appealing film. 5. “House of Sand and Fog”: A woman is evicted from her home after it is wrongly repossessed and auctioned. Together with a sheriff’s deputy the woman begins harassing the new owners of the home in an attempt to get back her residence. 6. “Field of Dreams”: Although it is not the house that is getting a makeover, but rather the fields behind this impressive farmhouse, viewers can be mesmerized by the magic that ensues afterward.

You’re an avid gardener, with a plethora of tools and equipment to prove it. Your garage, in fact, is bursting at the seams with all of your gardening gadgets, and your family is starting to yell about all of the clutter. It’s high time you got organized and looked into the purchase of a garden shed. Garden sheds come in all styles and sizes from small, plastic, freestanding units to large, wooden, bi-leveled barns. You will want a style that complements your landscape and is large enough to accommodate your storage needs. To determine the style and size of garden shed you will need, first weed through your garden tools and equipment to see what you plan to keep and to store. You may discover you don’t need a shed after all or need a rather large shed with a workbench for the multiple projects you’ve always got going on. Next, check out your landscape to determine where the shed would go and what materials would hold up best there. If you live in area that receives a lot of rain, a metal garden shed might not be a good idea. Finally, review any ordinances in place on garden sheds. You may need approval from your homeowner’s association as well as the city. You might even need a permit. When you have a style and size in mind, you can start the actual shopping. Look online as well as in-store. You will find a wide range of styles from freestanding units to kits to install to readymade buildings you can buy onsite and have moved to your landscape. Should you go with the latter, make sure the delivery truck can get to the shed site. Depending upon how handy you are, you might even want to build your own garden shed. There are several building plans available. Budget, of course, will always be a factor, and you should shop around for the best price. Should you choose to build your own garden shed, make sure you take everything into account from the shingles to the foundation. Many garden shed kits call The Pearce Family’s for a foundation. Make sure you accommodate for that in your budget.

p a v i n g

Garden sheds can make for a great asset to your home and more room in your garage. Just make sure you do your homework and find the right style and size for you. Garden sheds can be expensive, and this is one decision you don’t want to live to regret. Once all is said and done and everything is in place, make sure you lock it all up to deter thieves, youngsters and anyone else you want to keep out.

Harder Than Granite
By Tresa Erickson You’re in the middle of remodeling your entryway. Gone are the crusty old wallpaper, tarnished brass light fixtures and soiled carpet. In their place are a warm shape of taupe, classic rubbed bronze fixtures, and...well, you haven’t quite got to the flooring yet. Unlike most other types of ceramic tile which are made of red or white clay fired in a kiln, porcelain tile is composed of special porcelain clays and minerals, including feldspar, and fired in a kiln at a higher pressure, making it exceptionally hard-30% harder than granite to be exact. It is denser than other products, frost-proof and highly stain-, scratch- and water-resistant. Some lines are even slip-resistant. Virtually indestructible, porcelain tile can be used almost anywhere-low- and high-traffic areas indoors and out. It comes in a variety of styles and colors. In fact, the color of porcelain tiles goes all the way through, unlike the color of traditional tile which is baked on. Porcelain tile comes in three basic finishes: matte, unglazed and high-polished. Unglazed porcelain tiles work best for outdoor applications and require sealing. Porcelain tile absorbs very little water, making it easy to care for. Once installed, porcelain tile floors require just an occasional sweeping and mopping. Spills may be wiped up easily with a damp cloth. Because it can withstand a lot of wear and tear, many people are now using porcelain tile in their homes and businesses. The tile has definitely gained in popularity in recent years, and you should give it a look before selecting tile for your entryway. It might just make the perfect fit for your foyer.

Kitchen Work Triangle

The kitchen is arguably the most-used room in the house during waking hours. Having a kitchen that is laid out in an efficient manner can improve productivity and make for a more enjoyable experience. Designers often stress having an effective work triangle in the kitchen. The phrase “kitchen work triangle” started with the Building Research Council (formerly the Small Homes Council) at the University of Illinois. The idea came from studies of space usage and the search for efficient kitchen designs. What the triangle essentially means is positioning three key items of the kitchen for efficiency. The stove, sink and refrigerator represent the three main points of the triangle. Having these items spaced accordingly can make work easier. Having them too close together can create a cramped, ineffective room. The placement of the triangle points alone does not make a successful layout. According to the University of Missouri Extension, the triangle space should also be measured accordingly. Put 4 to 7 feet between the refrigerator and sink, 4 to 6 feet between the sink and stove and 4 to 9 feet between the stove and refrigerator, with the ideal size resulting in a work triangle where the three sides total between 15 and 22 feet.

With the local corn season finally upon us, I feel that it is about time, once again, to spread the word about how to properly prepare fresh sweet corn. If you’ve already read this, then take it a reminder. If not, then you’re about to learn something that will sweeten your summer. It looks as though our local farmers got the corn planted at the right time, and the weather this year has been perfect…it looks as though it is actually ahead of schedule. This is all good news to me since last year was such a disappointing year for sweet corn. I really look forward to fresh, locally grown sweet corn. I recently had some “grocery corn” and it wasn’t too bad, but only because I have nothing local to compare it to yet. Fresh, locally grown sweet corn is a delicacy that, until you leave the area, you don’t appreciate. I remember when I was going to visit my sister in California, I asked her if she wanted me to bring anything. She suggested some New York sweet corn that she remembered so fondly. So, I stopped at my favorite farm stand on the way to the airport and filled a large duffel bag with 4 dozen ears of fresh picked sweet corn. I knew it was fresh picked because I had to mind the farm stand while the farmer went out into the field to fill my duffel bag with corn right off the stalks. It doesn’t get much fresher than that! My sister and all her friends that she invited to lunch the next day were thrilled with this rare treat from Upstate New York. Many of them had never had “real” sweet corn and soon understood our passion. Get ready to enjoy it folks because it will soon arrive at your local farm stand. I usually wait until later to pass on my advice about how this delicacy should be prepared. I think I’ll do it now, at the beginning of the “corn season” so you ALL can try these methods and enjoy PROPERLY cooked sweet corn for the entire season. Regular readers have seen this before and know that I’m a bit fussy about how corn is cooked (almost as much of a fanatic as I am about not spraying your gardens with water) but I’m determined to spread the word. So, if you’ve seen this before, just bear with me. First, get the freshest corn you can find. If you don’t grow your own, get it from the busiest farm stand in your area. The most popular, busiest stand is going to be picking more frequently, insuring that the corn you buy was probably picked within the last few hours. Don’t be shy; ask when the corn was picked. Freshness is important because the simple sugars in the corn start to break down into starch VERY quickly once picked. If you are planning on having corn with dinner tomorrow, don’t buy it today. Buy it tomorrow in the afternoon. Get it into the ‘fridge as soon as you get it home to keep it fresh and sweet. Corn is the sweetest it will be BEFORE you cook it. Knowing this, we want to cook our corn as little as possible. When you’re ready to dine, shuck the corn and place it into COLD water and cook over high heat so the water boils as quickly as possible. The INSTANT the water boils, the corn is done. Drain all the water off and cover the pot to keep the corn warm between helpings. It’s a sad sight to see corn bobbing around in hot water getting soggy and starchy as it continues to overcook. There’s another way to cook corn that I love. Soak the unshucked corn in cold water for a few minutes. Place the corn on your grill or into the coals of a campfire. Rotate the ears frequently so that it cooks evenly. Cook until the husk on one side of the corn is just starting to burn through to the kernels. If some of the kernels get caramelized by the fire, so much the better as long as they don’t get burnt. Shucking these fire-cooked ears of corn can be challenging but well worth it. All that’s left is to add a little butter (the real thing of course) and I like a dash of pepper on mine. Skip the salt so you can enjoy the flavor of the corn. Besides, real butter has enough salt in it anyway. I know there are some folks out there who believe that corn MUST be boiled for several minutes. WRONG! If you don’t believe me, try cooking some my way along with some boiled to death and you’ll see. I had a reader who learned this method from me a couple of years ago and was so impressed that she actually called to thank me. Try it. The only problem is you’ll never be satisfied with soggy, overcooked corn again. Thanks for the read.

The drive-in movie theater was the brainchild of Richard Hollingshead, Jr., an auto products sales manager at his father’s Whiz Auto Products store. Hollingshead wanted to combine his passion for automobiles with his love of films. After testing different parking configurations and imitating weather conditions in his own driveway to simulate the drive-in movie experience, Hollingshead filed for a patent for the drive-In theater. He received the patent on May 16, 1933. The first drive-in was opened on June 6, 1933, in Camden, N.J. The price of admission was $.25 for the car and each person inside. Drive-in theaters peaked in popularity in the 1950s, when there were roughly 5,000 drive-ins operating across the United States and Canada. According to DriveIns.com, currently there are about 365 drive-ins remaining in the United States and 55 in Canada.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, auto dealerships are not legally obligated to give preowned car buyers a three-day right to cancel their purchase. This means a sale is final once a preowned vehicle buyer signs all of the necessary documents. However, some dealerships do offer a return policy, though that offer will likely not be made unless the buyer inquires about it. When a dealer does provide the privilege of returning the vehicle in 72 hours, the policy may be referred to as a “money-back guarantee” or a “no questions asked return policy.” While many dealers are trustworthy and willing to work with their prospective customers, the FTC recommends all buyers contact their local consumer protection agency and state attorney general to determine if there are any unresolved complaints on file with regard to a particular auto dealer. This can help buyers find a reputable dealer and give the $ buyers some additional peace $ of mind, especially for those $ shopping for preowned veFor $ hicles that tend to carry more for risk than a brand new car. $ Licensed DMV $ MOTORCYCLES #7110976 No Title--
