“Good Afternoon, Vietnam” - USO Show

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Saturday, June 8, 2 - 5 PM. Our Second Annual USO Show is almost here, and this year we are celebrating with a theme of the Vietnam Era. Step back in time as we transform the New York State Military Museum into a live USO Armed Forces Radio Network broadcast, stationed in Vietnam. Local reenactor and historian Gary Ferris will be our radio host for the evening, entertaining the crowd with monologues and routines that are reminiscent of Bob Hope’s USO Shows. The Manhattan Dolls will return this year to entertain the crowd with your favorite songs of the Vietnam Era. They will have you singing, dancing, and having lots of fun. And there will be delicious refreshments similar to those found in USO cantinas. Tickets for the USO Show are on sale now and can be purchased on our website, at the museum gift shop, and at the door. NYS Military Museum, 61 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs. Female Veterans Need Your Votes To Win $250,000!

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Saratoga RPC - VETHELP hopes to finish a wellness area in their transitional home for female veterans, who are nearly four times more likely to be homeless than non-veteran women. In addition to finishing their original project, they would use the funds from this contest to open a thrift store and training facility adjacent to their female home. This would be used to orient their female veterans to the workforce and allow them to earn wages to help further their independence. It would also assist them in developing the skills needed to re-enter the workforce once they “graduate” from their program. Additionally, the Thrift Store would provide their organization with sustainable funding to continue their mission as a private nonprofit organization committed to ending veteran homelessness. Please vote at VETHELPNY.org or on Facebook search for Aprons in Action. We need help right now until the end of May. Vote every day.

Here we are with Memorial Day weekend upon us once again and there have been precious few days to pull weeds and catch up on all the planting we want to do. It seems that every time I can line up some free time with dry weather, I have to spend that time mowing the lawn. Assuming that it doesn’t rain, it looks like Memorial Day weekend will be the time to scramble to plant. Amusingly, this is really the time I’d be putting most of my “tropical” vegetables in anyway. . Hopefully by the time you’re reading this, I’ll have finally gotten my tomatoes planted and I’ll be just about ready to get my peppers in. Peppers are more sensitive to soil temperature than all the other vegetable we plant. Peppers won’t perform well until SOIL temperatures are 65 degrees or higher. If the season is cool, I’ll enclose them in what I call a “pepperdome’. This is just a cute name for four stakes that I’ll wrap with horticultural fabric right to the ground covering my little pepper transplants. This fabric will trap heat and hold heat around the peppers on cool nights. Once summer weather arrives in earnest, I’ll remove the “pepperdome” and let the peppers bathe in direct sunlight. I also like to cover the soil beneath my peppers with black plastic to generate even more heat. If the summer gets really hot, I can cover the black plastic with straw to keep the soil temperature under control. In September, when temperatures start dropping, I’ll brush the straw back to let the sun warm up the plastic and soil again. There’s a little saying I use to remind myself not to plant my peppers too early: PLANTING PEPPERS PREMATURELY POSTPONES THE PERIOD OF PRIME PRODUCTION but PROVIDING PEPPERS WITH PROTECTION PERPETUATES PROFUSE, PROLONGED PRODUCTION. Now I’m going to give you my annual rant about a strange gardening habits that I just can’t understand. It drives me crazy when I see someone who’s spent a lot of time (and probably money too) creating a beautiful flowerbed or vegetable garden watering it with a lawn sprinkler or hand-held sprayer. It’s all I can do sometimes to keep from pulling off the road and giving them a “tune up”. I know that this is a habit borne of ignorance but it really isn’t at all good for the plants. Somehow the idea of spraying your plants with water seems “refreshing” and has a lot of appeal to people. Also, we’ve all seen those ads on TV that show the nice folks at some “mega warehouse chain” misting the flowers. While it creates a lovely visual effect for the TV viewer, it is one of the worst possible things you can do to your plants. Why? Remember that plants absorb moisture and nutrients with their ROOTS to replace moisture lost by the leaves through evaporation. When you wet the leaves, the plant isn’t able to grow until the leaves dry off. But this isn’t the worst of it! When you wet the leaves (especially in warm weather), you’re creating the perfect environment for fungal diseases to incubate and grow. Can anyone say “powdery mildew”? In the vegetable garden, problems with plants that produce flowers but never set fruit can almost always be traced to “spray-watering”. Spraying the plants with water washes the pollen out of the flowers. Without this pollen, the bees can’t pollinate the flowers. No pollen, no fruit or vegetables. There are no good reasons to “spray-water” unless you’re shooting a commercial for one of those ignorant “mega warehouse chains” and there are many good reasons not to (cold water shocks the plants washes away pollen and promotes fungal diseases). As far as I’m concerned, the only acceptable way to water is to get the water into the soil while wetting the leaves and flowers as little as possible. Soaker hoses can do this in permanent beds but I usually use my trusty watering wand. You’ve all seen these at the garden center and you probably think it’s just a handy device for watering hanging baskets that are too high to reach. In reality, the purpose of these wands is to help you direct water down into the soil among your plants without having to bend over with the hose. My watering wand is always attached to the end of my hose. Remember: lawn sprinklers have NO business anywhere in a flower or vegetable garden. Your hand held spray gun has no purpose in the yard at all unless you’re washing your car….end of rant and thanks for the read.

Abraham Lincoln leading Whipple City Parade GREENWICH – President Abraham Lincoln will be leading the Whipple City Parade to honor this year’s theme of Friday Night at the Movies, as the film “Lincoln” was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won 2 Oscars this year. As Grand Marshal, Mr. Lincoln comes in the form of Phil Jessen, who portrays the Civil War president professionally. Mr. Jessen lives in Hartford, works his day job as the CEO of the Association for the Blind in Glens Falls, and spends his free time entertaining and educating audiences with his look-alike impersonation and deep knowledge of the 16th president’s personality and accomplishments. Families, youth groups, musical groups, individuals and anyone wanting to celebrate films of today and yesterday are invited to join the parade, which kicks off the Whipple City Festival on Friday, June 14, at 6 pm. Line up for the parade begins at 5:30 pm in the Kmart parking lot. Visit the Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce at www.greenwichchamber.org or email info@ greenwichchamber.org for a registration form, or call the Chamber office at 692-7979 for more information. All are welcome to participate in the parade, even if the contingent does not represent this year’s theme. After the parade at the Gazebo, an Oscar will be awarded to the top contingent in each of the following three categories: Best overall float, best classic film theme, best contemporary film theme.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week

Cal

Cal is a very nice 2-year old brindle mixed breed boy. Upon 1st meeting, he’s a very nice boy. His foster says that he gets along well with both cats and dogs.

Teddy

Teddy is a very sweet-natured, older Pomeranian but he is plenty perky! He is thought to be anywhere from 8-10 years so he would be eligible for our Senior to Senior program (free to a Senior Citizen). He is mostly blind but gets around fine and would be a great companion for someone looking for a lovey buddy. Teddy was found in a dumpster! Despite this cruelty he endured, he has a very friendly disposition, likes to be petted and have his belly rubbed.

GLENS FALLS - The Main Office of Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company will host a Community Appreciation Day and Open House on Friday, May 24, featuring tours of the new South Street building, food, and fundraising activities to benefit the Queensbury Relay for Life. Festivities are planned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the downtown Glens Falls campus, in the courtyard between the new and old buildings at the corner of Glen and South streets. Tours of the Bank’s 20 South Street expansion will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be games with prizes, popcorn, balloons, a carnival clown, and hot dogs and drinks for a $1 donation from noon to 2 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Relay for Life of Queensbury, which is an overnight walk to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Other fundraising activities will include a bake sale, a raffle for a picnic basket filled with barbeque items, and the sale of luminarias to be decorated and dedicated in honor of loved ones who have battled cancer. During the relay, luminarias circle the track and provide light for participants as they walk throughout the night. Glens Falls National Bank offices host Community Appreciation Days throughout the year as a way to show appreciation for their neighbors and assist local causes. It can be difficult to pull over smoothly and safely on a busy highway, especially when you are in a stressful situation, such as a mechanical emergency. But it is in your best interest to remain calm and follow a few procedures. First, slow down and put on your right-turn signal to indicate you will need to move into the right lane. Some people prefer to put their fourway-flashers on after they have successfully cleared the lanes and are ready to navigate onto the shoulder. Try to select a spot where you are not on a bend or where there is poor visibility or your vehicle cannot be seen by other drivers on the highway. You do not want to be injured while exiting or attempting to work on the pulled-over vehicle. Drivers should keep an emergency roadside assistance preparedness kit containing flares, emergency triangles or cones, a flashlight, batteries, a poncho, booster cables, duct tape, a utility knife, cord, a blanket, and first aid supplies in the car as a precaution. Each item serves its own unique purpose. The Canadian Automobile Association recommends staying inside the vehicle, especially on a busy road. Tow trucks and police vehicles typically cruise busy stretches of road and help may arrive in a matter of minutes. Those who have a roadside assistance plan membership can use a cell phone to make a call for help. It is best to wait in the car until a tow truck or police arrive.

Did You Know?

According to the Federal Trade Commission, auto dealerships are not legally obligated to give preowned car buyers a three-day right to cancel their purchase. This means a sale is final once a preowned vehicle buyer signs all of the necessary documents. However, some dealerships do offer a return policy, though that offer will likely not be made unless the buyer inquires about it. When a dealer does provide the privilege of returning the vehicle in 72 hours, the policy may be referred to as a “money-back guarantee” or a “no questions asked return policy.” While many dealers are trustworthy and willing to work with their prospective customers, the FTC recommends all buyers contact their local consumer protection agency and state attorney general to determine if there are any unresolved complaints on file with regard to a particular auto dealer. This can help buyers find a reputable dealer and give the buyers some additional peace of mind, especially for those shopping for preowned vehicles that tend to carry more risk than a brand new car.

Buying a new automobile, be it a brand new car or a preowned vehicle, is a considerable investment. Some buyers agonize over which automobile to buy, while others tend to stick with the same make or model for years on end. Regardless of which group buyers fall into, there are some things all consumers should consider before buying their next vehicle.

Do you (518) 584-2121 routinely use your vehicle to take your children and their teammates to and from soccer practice? Is your commute long or short? Each of these things should factor into your decision. For example, if your commute to work is especially long, then perhaps a smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicle is the most practical choice. However, if you routinely carpool or use your car to get the kids to and fro, then a larger vehicle with a more roomy interior might be the best bet regardless of its fuel efficiency.

* Budget: Your budget is perhaps the biggest thing to consider when shopping for a new vehicle. Many buyers intend to finance or lease a vehicle, and sites such as Edmunds.com can help prospective buyers estimate what their monthly car payment will be. The larger the down payment you’re able to make, the less your monthly payment will be. In addition, those who intend to finance their vehicle purchases should consider the length of their finance agreement. You might be able to finance a vehicle purchase in as little as 12 months or as long as 72 months. The longer your agreement, the less you will be paying each month. However, you will pay more interest the longer your agreement is and your payment is likely to be the same in the 72nd month, when the vehicle has significantly depreciated in value, as it was in the first month when the vehicle’s value was at its peak. * Lease or buy: The decision to lease or buy is something to consider. Leasing allows drivers to drive a brand new car for far less money than if they were to purchase the vehicle outright, and the terms of a lease are typically far shorter than those when buyers are financing, which allows drivers to get a new vehicle more often. Buying or financing a vehicle has its advantages as well, most notably that you will be making payments for something you’re eventually going to own. In addition, buying or financing gives consumers more flexibility, as they’re allowed to sell the car whenever they choose without penalty, something that is not allowed under many lease agreements. In addition, there are no mileage restrictions when buying or financing, while such restrictions are typical when leasing a vehicle. * Insurance: Some vehicles are more expensive to insure than others. Insurance companies base insurance rates on a host of factors, but those vehicles that have the strongest safety records and are less likely to be stolen tend to cost less to insure. How much you will pay to insure a vehicle also depends on how you will be paying for it. Lenders typically require borrowers who are financing or leasing a vehicle to fully insure the car, which costs considerably more than basic insurance coverage that drivers who buy their vehicles outright tend to choose. Weigh the costs of insuring different makes or models before making your purchase. Buying a new vehicle requires a considerable financial investment, so buyers should weigh a host of factors before driving their next vehicle off the lot.
