Averill Park probes dispute Players claim verbal abuse; coach strongly denies their contention

The 2019 softball season for the Averill Park varsity squad ended last Wednesday afternoon. Exactly how things came to a close is the source of contention as an investigation prompted by the families of two senior players and allegations made against coach Ken Bailey are ongoing.

Senior pitcher Jadyn Lee and senior designated hitter Kelsey Mohl decided to quit the team prior to the start of the Section II Class A Tournament.

Kelly Mohl, the mother of Kelsey Mohl, said Thursday she met with Averill Park Superintendent of Schools James Franchini and athletic director Mark Bubniak last week regarding claims they made of verbal abuse toward Jadyn Lee and Kelsey Mohl by Bailey.

Bailey, who has not been suspended as the school continues

to investigate the allegations, did not coach Wednesday during the team’s first playoff game.

“As of right now, nothing has happened,” Kelly Mohl said. “(Bailey) didn’t coach (Wednesday) because in the superintendent’s words he, ‘Didn’t want a media circus.’ If it didn’t get out there the way it did, he still would have been able to be out there on the field coaching for a sectional game.”

Franchini and Bubniak both said Thursday they cannot discuss personnel issues with regard to the investigation.

Franchini was able to speak about the decision, made less than two hours prior to Wednesday’s game, not to have Bailey coach.

“It was a difficult decision,” Franchini said. “We were going to let coach Bailey coach the game, but we didn’t want (the media attention) to be a distraction for the girls. I felt it was in the player’s best interests not to have him

there and let them play the game.”

The Warriors were unable to hold a 6-1 advantage in the seventh inning and dropped an 8-6 decision against Troy with assistant coach Dave Pugliese running the team.

In a TV interview Wednesday on WTEN-TV (Channel 10), Kelsey Mohl stated on camera regarding Bailey, “He called me a ‘heavy-set hitter’ in front of the whole team and others.”

“There were several comments where he was body-shaming her about her weight,” Kelly Mohl said.

Asked to comment on those allegations, Bailey said, “I absolutely deny it. Do you think I would say anything about anyone’s weight in front of the team? That did not happen.”

According to Kelly Mohl, “This has been an ongoing thing. The school has had several complaints.”

Averill Park softball coach Ken Bailey has been accused by two of his players of being verbally abusive, a charge he says is not true.

Kelsey Mohl was not available for an interview, her mother said, but will likely talk Friday.

Merola: Greenlight Bill Still Hits A Red Light in Most of NY Rensselaer County Clerk Frank J. Merola is still speaking out against the proposed “Greenlight bill” which would allow those who are in the United States illegally and residing in New York state the ability to receive a New York State Driver’s license.

This controversial proposal has generated strong opposition from upstate and suburban areas leaving the democratic controlled legislature without the votes for approval.

“Once again this proposal is being driven by New York City politicians who do not have DMVs in their counties and have no idea on what it takes to get a license and how important a document the New York State driver’s license is in the lives of legal New York residents.” Mr. Merola said.

The Green light bill would allow those here illegally to receive a New York State driver’s license with fewer identification documents that legal residents need to provide. In addition, federal immi-

gration authorities would be barred from accessing any DMV information on an illegal holding a license without a judicial order.

Mr. Merola and Clerks in New York are opposed.

“Even assuming the immigrant activists are correct, it doesn’t change the fact that these people are here illegally. As they are still here illegally and should not be allowed to receive any document that potentially legitimizes the situation without first going through proper channels.”

Mr. Merola anticipates spirited future battles on this issue. “Legal residents are jumping through hoops trying to provide the necessary documentation for the real ID necessary to be allowed to fly in 2020.

Our residents will have major issues with a state government that appears to be bending over backwards to allow those here illegally the rights that residents have to struggle to gain. The fact that this bill has not yet passed leads me to believe that there are officials who believe they need to represent the whole of New York State not just New York city.”

On May 8th, I attended an awards ceremony put on by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee in conjunction with NYS Police, NYS DMV, and the Division of Criminal Justice Services. Among those receiving recognition was Town resident Bill Dikant. After a horrific accident caused by a drunk driver claimed the lives of his wife and two of his children, Bill has been relentless in his efforts to combat and eliminate drunk driving. Bill has advocated for increased enforcement, more strict limits, helping local law enforcement at DWI checkpoints, and has been a regular speaker at victim impact panels. It was my honor to attend this ceremony recognizing Bill for all he has done.

Finally, I had the privilege to once again serve as a host for this year’s Castleton Memorial Day parade. We were blessed with great weather as our community came out to honor the sacrifice of those who laid down their lives in defense of our country. I want to thank all the spectators and participants for their involvement, and I want to especially thank the hard work the parade organizers do each year in making this a success.

SPRING FEVER FUN Grassland Bird Field Day Promises Fun for All Ages Join Grassland Bird Trust (GBT) for a fun morning of free guided bird walks, bird watching and related activities at two locations in Fort Edward on Saturday, June 8. GBT Guides and DEC biologists will help you spot, identify and learn about a variety of breeding and migratory songbirds, including some of New York’s most imperiled grassland bird species!

Cooking and Creating for a Cause Summer Day Camp The First Reformed Church in Wynantskill will be holding a Cooking and Creating for a Cause Summer Camp again this summer. This camp is for boys and girls entering grades 2-8 who would like to create food and crafts to be donated to local charities. The camp will be held the week of July 15 -19 for children entering grades 2-4 and August 5 - 9 for children entering grades 5-8. The camp hours are from 9 am until 12 pm and will be held at the church on the corner of Main Ave. and Church St. in Wynantskill.

Brought to Light: Unearthing the History of an African-American Cemetery in Kinderhook, NY is a one-hour documentary that tells the story of how the cleanup efforts by a few villagers of some stone markers in an overgrown field lead to the rediscovery of a forgotten, “slaves’ cemetery” in which hundreds of African Americans were buried during the 1800s. It features the archaeological dig to place the interpretive sign, a Ground Penetrating Radar Survey conducted at the site, moving excerpts from the 2017 cemetery rededication ceremony, and a dramatization involving oral history and the Underground Railroad.

Film maker Barbara Reina will present the film and hold a Q and A after the screening. All are welcome to attend.

when asked if he had ever witnessed Bailey “body-shaming” Mohl, he said through a text message, “I never witnessed that.”

Bailey said Lee and Mohl never once voiced concerns to him prior to quitting the team.

“I wish someone had the guts to come to me and say, ‘I don’t like the way you do this or that.’ No one did.”

One of the points of contention from the players, Bailey said, is a team meeting he had.

Bailey addressed the entire team prior to the Warriors’ second of two regular-season Suburban Council games against Ballston Spa. The first time the teams played, Averill Park beat the Scotties 6-2.

“I told them this team is coming for us after what happened the first game. I said, ‘This is what I am seeing: We’re coming off a few losses and we have to play better. I deny using any names. I said that we need better production out of the bottom of the order. I said the seven, eight and nine positions in the order, over the last 10 games, are hitting .063.

Bailey added the conversation that day went no further. Averill Park lost that game 9-1.

“I really believe some of these kids have never been called out,” Bailey said.

Kelly Mohl said her daughter and Lee both decided they would quit after the Ballston Spa game.

“That was when they made their decision, after the Ballston Spa game,” Kelly Mohl said. “Kelsey and Jadyn had had enough and they just couldn’t take it any more. After watching him degrade the whole team over and over again, they decided it was in their best interests, emotionally and mentally, that they could not play for him any more.”

Lee and Mohl, however, played in wins against Guilderland the next day and against Troy two days after the Ballston Spa game.

“After we spoke with both girls, we felt they should play Senior Night (against Guilderland) and not him take that away from them,” Kelly Mohl said. “We couldn’t get into see Dr. Franchini until Tuesday morning (May 21).

“They were making a stand for themselves. They only way to do that was through the chain of command.”

Bailey said following a practice May 23 before Lee and Mohl chose to quit the team, Lee’s father confronted him in the parking lot.

Bailey stated he believed the Mohls did not like the fact he elevated Abbey Nagel to varsity in 2018, who then was an eighth-grader, to play first base. Bailey shifted Mohl into the designated hitter role.

“I felt we needed better (defensive) play at first base,” Bailey said. “There was no disrespect intended. I believe the family has held that against me ever since.”

Bailey said no matter what happens going forward, he does not plan to return as coach.

John is a Lansingburgh native now living in NYC. He is known for his local and NYC street scenes. He studied artistic anatomy and painting on scholarship at the Art Students League of New York and was awarded a Fine Arts Certificate of Completion.

John also studied Sumi-e (Japanese brush painting including studies in Japan). He has exhibited extensively and has taught both in the Capital Region and NYC and has three books out of his paintings.

For a fourth year, Stewart’s Shops is treating American Red Cross blood donors to free pints of ice cream this June. Public Meeting to Assist with Poestenkill Natural Resources Inventory Residents of Poestenkill are invited to a meeting to see the Town’s natural features mapped in full color and detail and provide feedback on the accuracy and ease of use of the maps. The Poestenkill Conservation Advisory Council (CAC) will hold a public meeting at 7 pm at Town Hall on Wednesday, June 19, to brief Town officials and other residents on an updated Natural Resources Inventory (NRI) that the CAC is preparing. It will include maps of streams, forests,

wetlands and flood hazard zones, among many natural characteristics. An updated NRI is a support document for the Town’s Comprehensive Master Plan to assist Town boards, landowners, and prospective developers when considering land use and protection. The CAC is creating the updated NRI as part of a pilot program of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Hudson River Estuary

Program, which provides digital mapping expertise from Cornell University and publication assistance from the Rensselaer Land Trust. WATER CONCERNS?

A Rensselaer County Supreme Court jury focused on evidence that placed the defendant at the scene of a 2016 murder as it listened Monday to read-backs of testimony by a co-defendant turned prosecution witness and a state DNA expert.

Luis Alfredo Monges Guevara, 23, faces two counts of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree burglary for allegedly killing Javier Gomez Bartolon, 24, on Oct. 17, 2016, in his second-floor apartment at 1 E. Glen Ave. in Troy’s North Central neighborhood.

The testimony of Salomon Najera Hernandez, 23, was read back. Hernandez testified against Guevara as part of a plea deal struck with the prosecution for a five-year prison sentence for burglary. Hernandez said he saw a knife on the floor next to Bartolon’s body with Guevara standing over it.

Guevara is accused of stabbing Bartolon 13 times in the chest, while co-defendant Cresencio Salazar, 28, was accused of striking Bartolon 20 times in the head with a hammer.

bloody sneakers allegedly worn by Guevara from a dumpster. The shoes had some of Guevara’s DNA on the inside, and were covered with Bartolon’s blood on the outside, according to expert testimony by Amanda Benton of the State Police.

Defense attorney Jay Hernandez had strongly questioned the prosecution witnesses about the sneakers as Guevara’s DNA was found inside them but not at the murder scene.

The case has lasted 31 months as indictments District Attorney Joel E. Abelove were dismissed because of a lack of corroborating evidence for the accomplice testimony. Hernandez and co-defendant Magdaleno Perez Calixto, 32, took plea deals. Calixto is to serve nine years for kidnapping and burglary.

The fourth defendant, Salazar, was never successfully indicted. He was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and deported to Mexico.

The case began Oct. 16, 2016, in a Colonie motel where the four suspects fatally attacked Bartolon’s roommate Cristian Gonzalez Hernandez, 26, according to authorities and court papers. The four men dumped his body in the Quacken Kill creek in Brunswick.

News from Averill Park CSD The Algonquin Middle School Odyssey of the Mind team competed at the World Finals held at Michigan State University.

The team ranked 11th out of 64 teams representing 11 countries and 33 states.

Congratulations to Faith Murray for being named one of WNYT’s 13 Kids Who Care! Faith has done an amazing job of raising money for Camp Abilities by collecting, and returning, bottles and cans.

Second graders at West Sand Lake Elementary held their own Cystic Fibrosis walk in hallways and classrooms to help raise awareness about the disease while supporting a fellow classmate. Teachers and students also participated in the Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Walk at The Crossings. This is a great way to rally and show

Our Hope 7 Traveling Summer Camp brings 60 children daily, ages 5-13, to our beautiful state parks for physical activity, swimming, arts & crafts, social skill building, emotional learning, and good, old-fashioned summer fun. Our programs are designed to build children up - mind, body, and spirit.

A nourishing lunch and snack are provided at no charge to fuel them for the adventures of the day.

The need for quality childcare for the long summer hours is so vital, but the cost is difficult for parents to bear. In light of this, Hope 7 has maintained low family rates despite rising

program costs to ensure a quality program is available to those who need it, but the need is far greater than we can handle alone.

Our sponsorship program is designed to cover part or all of the cost of camp. The cost per week for one child is $170. Last year, 40 children were able to attend camp with the help of sponsors like you!

Zachary Effman selected for First-Year Student Award CANTON, NY -- Zachary J. Effman of West Sand Lake has been selected for a Bradley R. Evers Outstanding First-Year Student Award.

Effman is a member of the Class of 2022. Effman attended Averill Park High School.

Bradley R. Evers was a first-year student at St. Lawrence in the fall of 1990. He was very active in the First-Year Program (FYP), in organizing the First-Year Student Council, and was involved in many other co-curricular activities. Evers was an outstanding first-year student leader and was presented an award recognizing that fact on Moving-Up Day in the spring of 1991. Tragically, he died suddenly in the summer after his first year.

The Bradley R. Evers Outstanding First-Year Student Awards were established in his memory.

Nominees must be first-year students, have strong academic averages (normally a 3.0 GPA or above), have been involved in a variety of academic and co-curricular activities, and have made positive contributions to their FYP/FYS classroom, their residence hall, and/or the first-year class as a whole.

Rensselaer County Garden Tour June 13 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County will hold its annual “Rensselaer County Garden Tour” on Thursday, June 13, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. This drive-ityourself tour will feature more than twelve gardens in the Historic South Troy and Eastside neighborhoods.

Gardens this year include shade and sun perennials, raised bed vegetables, townhouse gardens, poolside gardens, arbors and pathways, backyard orchards and fruit plants. Everyone will enjoy seeing the gardens and learning from their owners and will take home dozens of inspirational ideas.

Rensselaer Youth Outdoors Forest Conservation Corps Teen Sumer Program Rensselaer County, NY: Rensselaer Youth Outdoors is announcing an environmental education summer program for teenagers, aged 14-16. The program will combine recreation and education experiences while teens work on valuable conservation projects protecting Rensselaer county’s parks, waters and natural resources.

The four-week program will run weekdays from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, July 22 to August 16, with space for 10 teens each week.

Rensselaer County CA$H Chapter Honors Local Volunteer with Award Recently the Rensselaer County CA$H (Creating Assets $avings and Hope) Chapter presented the annual Wallace “Wally” G. Donnelly Volunteer Service Award to George Betzinger of Troy NY, honoring him for his volunteer work assisting and coordinating the VITA free tax prep program at the CEO Family Resource Center in Troy.

For the past 10 years, George has been involved with VITA, and prior to that he was involved doing the paper returns (taxes by hand) at the Troy Public Library and also at CEO in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

In 2009, he took on the duties and responsibilities as the Site Coordinator at CEO, working with various administrative and volunteer personnel over the past years. Most recently, working with Renata Gwozdz, Assistant Director of Program Operations at CEO who over sees the VITA program at CEO. For his professional career, George worked more than 43 years for the State of New York, 12 for the Department of Labor and 31 for the State Lottery Department, officially retiring in 2009. He has been married for more than 50 years to his wife Mary Lou and have one son and 2 grandchildren.

We are very happy to recognize George Betzinger with our annual volunteer “Wally Award” and offer our sincere congratulations and best wishes.

Personal remembrances, receipts, documents, advertisements, pay stubs, anything related to the AWM. We are told AWM once manufactured Woolen sweaters and perhaps jackets for the US military during World War II. From time to time there was Surplus sales of irregular garments.

Ft. Crailo DAR historical walking tour A delegation representing 4-H members in New York State traveled to Albany May 19-21, 2019 for the 84th annual 4-H Capital Days event. Nearly 100 teen delegates and their chaperones participated in the conference. Representing Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County were 4-H member Amanda Thrasher of Troy and Eileen DePaula, 4-H Program Coordinator.

During this year’s event, 4-H members, volunteer leaders, and staff met with leaders in state government, members of the court system, and officials from a variety of state agencies. In addition, they observed a working session of the legislature, toured the New York State Capitol Building, and had the opportunity to speak with their representatives. The Rensselaer County delegates had the opportunity to meet with Senator Daphne Jordan and Assemblyman Jake Ashby. At the closing ceremony, New York State Lieutenant Governor, Kathy Hochul addressed the delegates.

by Eric Schuman It was another action-packed week in sports for Averill Park. The boy’s baseball team defeated Mohonasen 2-1 in their first round of sectionals on 5/25. On 5/27, the Warriors upset the #2 seed Amsterdam in a 14-inning marathon game. They won 3-2 with Joe Milanese scoring the go-ahead run off a squeeze bunt from Anthony Childrose. Avery Pascucci pitched 11 innings for the Warriors, striking out 6 in the process. On 6/1, AP took on Ballston Spa in the Sectional finals, but fell 9-3. Ethan Simard drove in two runs and Ian Zieske added an RBI double for the Warriors in the loss.

In the Section 2 boys’ tennis individual tournament, Eric Schuman advanced to the finals after defeating Will Bievenue of Bethlehem 6-1, 6-1 on 5/23, and Mike Kendrick of CBA 6-3, 6-4 on 5/28. Schuman fell to Keon Armstrong of Chatham 6-3, 6-1 in the finals on 5/28, but advanced to the state tournament and won a match in the consolation bracket.

The boy’s and girl’s track and field teams competed at State Qualifiers on 5/30 and 5/31. For the girls, Lydia Ware and Sophia Morone qualified for states in the 200m race and Megan Glanton and Anna Jankovic tied for third place in the pentathlon. For the boys, Michael Beskid ran a 56.77 in the 400m hurdles to finish second. Marty Bond placed second in discus with a throw of 139’4” and Jamie Cocca won the discus and shot put events to advance to the state meet for both.

The girls’ softball team fell to Troy 8-6 in a sectional game on 5/29. Marissa and Abbey Nagel provided the offense for AP combining for 5 RBI’s in the loss.

Good luck to the remaining AP athletes as the spring season wraps up. Go Warriors!

This week’s scholar athlete is Anna Doyle. Anna plays offense on the Varsity Lacrosse team. Anna has played lacrosse for nine years, after she was first introduced to the sport through the Averill Park Youth Lacrosse League.

Anna’s favorite part about her sport is “playing and working together with my teammates.” She says the hardest aspect of lacrosse is seeing the field from another perspective and having to increase your lacrosse IQ no matter what position you play. Also, the long practices, the early morning practices and just working hard the whole season.”

To prepare for her senior season, Anna went to the gym and did preseason workouts with her team.

Anna’s efforts helped her team to win the sectional semifinals game this year, and advance to the championship game.

Anna does not only work hard in her sport, but in her academics as well. Anna has maintained a GPA of 92 throughout high school. Additionally, she is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the senior class Vice President and member of student government.

Outside of school, Anna works at two part-time jobs. In her future, Anna plans to attend Hudson Valley Community College to enter the dental hygiene program there.

Anna would like to thank “my family and friends who have supported me through everything, and I’m so grateful to be able to play with such amazing teammates who have turned into my best friends.” She also says that her mom “has been my role model through everything and has inspired me to never give up until I reach my goal.”

We all wish Anna the best as she ends her senior year and enters college.

Sand Lake Town Beach opening date

Hugs From Henry Inc. will be holding their golf fundraiser once again at the Van Patten Golf Club at 924 Main St., Clifton Park, NY 12065 on Mon., June 17th. Registration will start at 8 am with a 9 am shot gun start (18 holes). At 1 pm, we will have a buffet lunch. Donations are $100 per golfer (for a team of 4) which covers green fees, cart and buffet lunch. We will present awards, prizes and will have raffles. We are also looking for people or businesses to sponsor a hole for a $100 donation.

The Sand Lake Town Beach will open on Saturday, June 29, 2019. Hours are from 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM every day. The cost for residents is free. Passes can only be issued at the Town Clerk’s office during regular hours starting on Friday, June 21, 2019.

They were honored earlier in May at one of club meetings held at the Schodack Diner. Being a Kiwanis member means focusing on the needs of children in our community and around the world so that future generations will thrive. We could not accomplish this mission without our members.

We thank them all for joining our very active club, and also want to thank all our current members who dedicate their time and energy into making our community a better place.

We are always looking for new members, ready and willing to join us in serving our community and having fun while doing so. Our typical meeting time is Wednesdays at 6:30pm at the Schodack Diner, however, meetings will end for the summer and resume in late August.

Our club will, however, be manning the grill and serving delicious food at the Town of Schodack’s “Music in the Park” concert series, held each Tuesday through July 2.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Private Profit at Public Expense Necessity is the mother of invention.

I believe the NY State Public Service Commission should reject the “Albany Loop/E-37” project and help NY move toward its energy goals.

By paying for a new pipeline with rate payer money, there is no incentive for National Grid to find alternatives to its proposed “Albany Loop/E37” fracked gas pipeline.

Climate change endangers the future of our planet; we have to find alternatives. And we can’t wait.

The NY State goal of 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 cannot be met if we continue to build fossil fuel infrastructure. New pipelines will last for at least 50 years. (However, they will be stranded assets long before that.) If it is a bridge fuel, why are we giving it long lasting power?

The Albany Loop/E-37 proposal did not seriously look at non-pipeline alternatives.

Why not use the electric rate hike money to instead incentivize homeowners and businesses to use geothermal heat for new growth and offer entities rate structures that act to reduce or not use gas on the few peak days each year?

If we were at war, we would ask our citizens to make sacrifices for our national interests. I believe it is time to ask people to make sacrifices to ensure the continuation of a livable planet.

Who Needs Another Climate Busting Fracked Gas Pipeline?

With great distress, I read that Patrick Stella, a spokesman for National Grid, stated that a proposed “E37” or “Albany Loop” fracked gas pipeline for the Capital District will “help deliver a clean energy future.” Natural

gas is not clean energy and contributes greatly to our global warming demise. Our decisions now, will determine what kind of a climate future our children will have - difficult or catastrophic.

This proposed pipeline is quite contrary to reducing our carbon footprint and transitioning our dependency off harmful fossil fuels. The NYS Public Service Commission’s (PSC), lead agency herein, has a prime goal of a sweeping energy policy to transition us to 50% renewables by 2030.

Also, the Article X state statute that pertains to electric generating facilities 25MW and more also comports with the goal to transition off fossil fuels, specifically natural gas, and to reduce our carbon footprint. We cannot support any new fossil fuel projects and be in compliance with the PSC’s policy or the Article X state statute.

This project will not provide our children a sustainable, habitable future. Ominous reports from the United Nations, the US government and world scientists cannot be ignored.

Every effort to provide clean, reliable energy for the future must be focused on conservation and transitioning to solar, wind, and geothermal energy.

Here Comes Karma The “Russia collusion” investigation against Donald Trump was a scam of global proportions. The key to understanding this lies in the implausibility of each and every aspect of the earliest known factors of the investigation. It’s a matter of connecting the right dots. The Democrat Party and the Main Stream Media are key players in this scam. They have been collaborating (aka colluding, aka conspiring) to present dots of fiction to the court of public opinion in order to undermine Mr. Trump’s support. They never had a legal basis for a case in a real court.

The first factual dot for me was that although the Democrats and the MSM have always referred to this as a criminal investigation, it was actually a counter-intelligence investigation. Knowing the differences between these two types of investigations, particularly how evidence is handled, is what convinced me.

In a criminal investigation, evidence, including exculpatory evidence, is gathered that must be discoverable by the defendant. In a counter-intelligence investigation, no one is entitled to know the evidence. That permitted them to leak evidence at will and place gag orders on the defendants.

Mr. Trump’s accusers had no evidence. What they had were lies that they pretended was evidence. They hired a former British spy to create a dossier based on Russian disinformation about Mr. Trump. They then leaked the most salacious aspects of that disinformation to CNN and Yahoo News and used those news sources as evidence to a FISA Court judge that the information was independently verified and corroborated.

Mr. Trump’s accusers also wrote a real-life screen play starring George Papadopoulos who was a minor player on the fringe of the Trump campaign. They gave Mr. Papadopoulos a script that he was supposed to recite to an alleged FBI informant at a meeting that was arranged

Struck a chord Sylvia Honig’s poem, “When I Was Young” (5/24/19) struck a chord. My dream as a child was to have a wild animal pet. Grandpa told me that if I sprinkled salt on a bird’s tail, I could catch it. I ran around for some time with a saltshaker, but nothing came of it.

A few years ago, my son Paul had just graduated seminary. He and his wife and two children aged 6 and 4 were with us for that summer. One day when Paul was in the yard, a baby squirrel jumped from a low branch onto his arm. It was early spring and still cold. We tried for a few days to locate his nest, but we couldn’t leave this baby out in the sub-freezing cold.

I found a doll bottle in the attic and filled it with evaporated milk. The first feeding he put his little paws around the bottle and drank deeply. I was hooked, and happily went through this routine several times a day. He was better than my own babies; he slept all night.

Next thing I knew, my husband had built a cage which we put in the dining room; an exercise wheel appeared.

We had entertainment every meal.

But the day came that Sylvia describes in her poem.

I nearly cried when I read it. It was time to part. We worried. We took sunflower seeds out to him, even nailed a watering bottle to one of our trees. He didn’t disappear.

When we went out and called, he came running.

One picture is indelibly etched in mind. It was a rainy summer morning. My little granddaughter went out with her pink ruffled umbrella and called, “Squirrelly!” He dropped from the tree above her onto her umbrella, ran to its edge and peeked over it at her.

We went camping one weekend. When we got back, our squirrel was gone. We never saw him again, but in our hearts, there is a squirrel shaped soft spot. We study the current crop of squirrels and wonder, are they any relation to our baby?

CLEMSON, SC -- Kimberly Elizabeth O’Brien of Troy, NY graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering.

O’Brien was among 3,600 students who received degrees at the May 9-10 ceremonies at Littlejohn Coliseum.
