Philips plans to add 94 jobs Medical manufacturer in Latham announces $13.2 million expansion By: ERIC ANDERSON
COLONIE - Philips Medical Systems MR plans a $13.2 million expansion at its Latham manufacturing facility that will add 94 jobs to the more than 400 people already employed at the site. The expansion was announced Thursday morning by Empire State Development, which is providing $1 million in Excelsior
Jobs Program tax credits over a five-year period, based on Philips’ commitment to keep more than 400 jobs at the plant and create 94 new jobs. The plant produces components for Philips’ magnetic resonance imaging systems. “We are excited to expand our operations in Latham, which will ultimately benefit our customers, our business and the community, and we are thankful to the Excelsior program for its support,” said Michael Morich, Philips Medical Systems MR, Inc. Business Leader and Head of Research & Develop-
ment. “Philips is a leading developer and manufacturer of Magnetic Resonance Imaging systems. We are proud to be in this field and operating our MR components business in the Latham community.” Philips acquired the former Intermagnetics General Corp. for $1.3 billion in 2006. IGC was a spinoff of General Electric Co., which also has its own MRI business with a manufacturing facility at the Rensselaer Technology Park in North Greenbush. The expansion at the Latham Philips plant is part of an effort to
expand the Capital Region’s life sciences and advanced manufacturing industries, and transform the region into a “cutting-edge medical research and technology hub,” according to the ESD announcement. The initiatives also include a new Wadsworth Center laboratory for the state Health Department and a major expansion at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in Rensselaer County. firstname.lastname@example.org NOVEMBER 11, 2016 SUL 518-454-5323 WHO ARE NOVEMBER 11, 2016

National Poppy Day
Now Booking for Spring
CAPITAL DISTRICT - National Poppy Day is Friday, May 24, 2019. In 2017, The American Legion brought National Poppy Day to the United States by asking Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day, as National Poppy Day®. The American Legion Auxiliary asks that everyone wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation’s uniform. We ask that Memorial Day weekend not be the unofficial beginning of summer, but time to remember those who have given their lives in the cause of justice, freedom, and democracy. The Poppy is a nation-

ally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. National Poppy Day is a strong renewal of our nation’s commitment to a powerful reminder of the cost of our freedom. The red poppy became the symbol of the blood shed during battle following the publication of “In Flanders Fields” written by Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D. while serving on the front lines during WWI. In 1918, Moina (mo-eena) Michael, who became known as the “Poppy Lady”, wrote on the back of an envelope: And now the Torch and Poppy Red; We wear in honor of our dead. Fear not that ye have died for naught; We’ll teach the lesson that ye wrought, In Flanders Fields.
The American Legion Auxiliary distributes handmade poppies annually for a donation, to assist our programs for veteran outreach programs. Students may participate in learning about the memorial poppy and what it stands for through our Poppy Poster Contests and our Miss Poppy Contests.

Books For Troops Asks You To “Adopt-A-Box” CAPITAL DISTRICT Books for Troops is holding a fundraiser called “Adopta-Box.” Held between our two most patriotic holidays, Memorial Day, (held this year on May 27th) and the 4th of July. In 2017 “Adopt a Box” was able to raise within a month’s time enough money to mail 165 boxes, although our goal had been only 100 within that 30 day period. To those unfamiliar with the term, coined by one of our original volunteers, “Adopt-a- Box” means to pay the postage of $15 to mail a box filled with books and other reading material to the deployed troops anywhere in the world or to 31 VA hospitals in the states or the one in Landstuhl Germany. Our goal this year is to have 150 boxes “adopted” within a 42 day period. In order to Adopt-Box, you simply make out a check to Books for Troops and mail it to: Books for Troops, 152 Oak Brook Commons, Clifton Park, NY 12065. We ask you to write on the memo of your check the words
adopt-a-box so that your donation will we recorded as part of our fundraiser. If you want to adopt more than one box at $15 a box, they, too, will be counted in the numbers. On July 5th we will record on Facebook the number of boxes that were adopted. What a patriotic way to celebrate our nation’s independence than to remember those who are sacrificing so much to preserve it? As always, thank you for supporting our troops and Books for Troops, now in its 10th year. - Ellen Keegan and Books for Troops Volunteers

to film her “Hometown Heroes” segment. The town and school district planned events to welcome her on Tuesday. On Sunday, VanDenburg sang three songs: “What about Us,” by Pink chosen by in-house mentor Bobby Bones, “Your Song,” by Elton John, and “Make You Feel My Love,” by Adele in honor of Mother’s Day. The judges again lavished praise on the teen who they dubbed “the next Kelly Clarkson” in her audition, referring to the first “Idol” winner. On Sunday, Lionel Richie said the teen’s star was shining bright. Katy Perry told VanDenburg she showed “some crazy musical talent ... if you bring that out in the first 30 seconds, you are going to win.” On Sunday, Shaker High’s 700-seat auditorium was half full of fellow students and fans. Colonie officials and VanDenburg’s family members were also in attendance. Five minutes before the show kicked off, student ambassadors pulled VanDenburg up on a video call and held the phone to a microphone to project her message to local fans. “I just want to say I’m literally shocked at all you guys sitting there,” she said. “From the bottom of my heart, I just want to thank you for everything. I’m literally about to go on stage in a couple minutes and I want to say thank you to everyone who’s helped me get to this point. I love you guys and I really hope to make you proud tonight.” Shaker High student ambassadors Shannon Lipscomb, a sophomore, and Mariam Rehman, a junior, organized free viewing parties last week and this Sunday. They got food donated from local grocery stores and bakeries. They decorated with posters and balloons. They requested attendees bring a nonperishable item for the Shaker food pantry, and by the time the show started, a cart outside the auditorium was overflowing with canned goods. “We’re so proud of her,” said Rehman. She first heard her friend sing a Christina Aguilera tune at a seventh grade talent show and added that the American Idol star is really friendly with everyone. Lipscomb, who’s in math class with VanDenburg, said “she’s quiet but she’s really nice.” VanDenburg’s older sister Taylor VanDenburg, 19, said before the show she was
so nervous she was going to watch on the edge of her seat. “I never expected something this big, but I always could imagine she was going to go places and do things,” she said. The older VanDenburg remembers her little sister singing as a 6-year-old and then going on to perform at restaurants and marinas and sing the national anthem at baseball fields. The sisters have four other siblings. VanDenburg’s mother drove out to Los Angeles, where her daughter is performing, last week in three and a half days with a banner on the back of her car telling the country to vote for Madison. “Your talent brings me to tears of joy and happiness,” VanDenburg’s mother said in a video that aired on the show for Mother’s Day Sunday. VanDenburg auditioned in October and was one of 40 contestants invited to Los Angeles for the show, which began airing March 3. Cohoes hosted a watch party at Cohoes Music Hall on May 5, with about 50 fans attending to show their support. Oddsmakers have picked her as a favorite to win. The website goldderby. com correctly predicted she would make the season 17 “American Idol” finals with Laine Hardy and Alejandro Aranda. “No matter what happens, I’m really happy with what I’ve achieved,” VanDenburg told the Times Union on May 2. “It would be OK if I didn’t win. Everything I’ve gotten out of the show has been incredible.” Voting next week is at www.americanidol.com/vote firstname.lastname@example.org 518-454-5092 - @mallorymoench
