COURTHOUSE GALLERY Diane Banks and Deanna Lee September 17 - October 21, 2011 Opening Reception: Saturday, September 17, 6 - 8 pm The Lake George Arts ProjectĘźs Courthouse Gallery presents a two person exhibition of new work by Diane Banks and Deanna Lee. The opening reception takes place on Saturday, September 17, 6 - 8 pm, during the intermission of performances at the Lake George Arts ProjectĘźs JAZZ WEEKEND. Come celebrate art and music in Lake George! These events are FREE and open to the public. Diane Banks creates mysterious, elegant objects out of common discarded materials. Plastic bottles and other debris that may have been intended for the landfill are given new life. In transforming waste into lively animated objects she reminds us of the old adage: “One personĘźs trash is anotherĘźs treasure.â€? In a process she calls “controlled doodlingâ€?, Deanna LeeĘźs paintings develop from clusters of lines that accumulate into masses that evoke organic forms like hair, muscles, fungi, waves, or wind currents. She says: “My goal is to arrive at a state of curiosity and tension in each work, where the forms suggest, but do not declare their identities or purposeâ€?. This exhibition is funded in part by Price ChopperĘźs Golub Foundation, The Village of Lake George, and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. The Courthouse Gallery hours during exhibitions are Tuesday through Friday 12 – 5 pm, Saturday 12 – 4 pm, and all other times by appointment. The Courthouse Gallery is located at the side entrance of the Old County Courthouse, corner of Canada and Lower Amherst Streets, Lake George, NY. PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. T. M. S.

Violinist Ragga Pettursdottir, violist Junah Chung and cellist Elliot Bailen join Jill Levy, Artistic Director of the Saratoga Chamber Players and ASO Concertmaster, for the opener of the 25th season of the Saratoga Chamber Players. The concert will take place on Friday evening, October 14 at 8 PM at the United Methodist Church, 5th Avenue and Henning Road, Saratoga Springs as part of the MOHU celebration of the Capital Region arts. The Handel/Halvorsen “Passacaglia”, first piece on the program, is a luscious and demanding duet for violin and cello. It is followed by Debussyʼs only String Quartet, considered a “watershed in the history of chamber music” for its impressionistic sensuality. The evening performance concludes with Beethovenʼs “String Quartet in C# minor”, Op. 131. Beethoven once told a friend he considered this one his best quartet. It is a testament to the composerʼs interest in thematic variations and stands out for its subtle beauty. A Meet-the-Musicians dessert reception will follow the concert. Tickets are: adults $18, seniors $15, students $12. The season is made possible, in part, by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, Governor Cuomo, and the NY State Legislature. For more information, a taste of SCPʼs music, bios and photos of the musicians, visit <

Three speakers will talk on Occupy Wall Street issues this month at the Freethinker Friday Forum from 6-8 p.m. on October 21 at UUCGF. Admission is free. Matt Funiciello will lead off by speaking on the nature of citizen protest in an age of corporate media and the need to meaningfully occupy the local food, media, and local government systems that control us. Matt is a local activist and business owner. Then we will hear Leo Herr's first-person account of his all-night occupation of Wall Street and march. Leo is a college student at SUNY Stony Brook in Long Island. Finally, John Warren will speak and answer questions about the Wall Street Occupation. John is the founder and editor of the online Adirondack Almanac and teaches Documentary Studies and Media Production at Burlington College. All present are invited to discuss the topic, whether you agree with the speakers or not. Homemade soup and bread will be provided by Rockhill Bakehouse. Opinions of the speakers are not necessarily those of UUCGF. "When two people are of the same opinion, one of them is not necessary." Presented by the Social Action Committee Location: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Glens Falls 21 Weeks Road (off Rt 9 next to WalMart), Queensbury, NY 12804

Local Students Earn Recognition at Skidmore College Skidmore College recognizes student-athletes SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - A record 111 student-athletes were inducted into the Skidmore College Thoroughbred Society in a Sept. 19 campus ceremony. In her opening remarks, Athletics Director Gail Cummings-Danson recognized the students and said there was also a record number of seniors (44) saluted at the event. In addition, 24 student-athletes achieved a perfect grade point average of 4.0. The following local students were recognized: Lionel Pollacchi, Class of 2013. He is the son of Tina Riechmann of Porter Corners .

The following teams also were cited for having a team grade point average of 3.1 or better: field hockey (team GPA of 3.6); women's soccer, women's crew, men's tennis (team GPA of 3.5); softball, riding, men's and women's basketball, women's swimming and diving, women's lacrosse, men's soccer, ice hockey, women's tennis, volleyball (team GPA of 3.3); men's crew, golf, men's lacrosse, men's swimming and diving, baseball (team GPA of 3.1). Flagg Taylor, assistant professor of government and chair of the Skidmore Athletic Council, discussed the value of failure in his remarks, noting that confronting and dealing with failure in the classroom or on the playing field can be a powerful motivator. Skidmore's Thoroughbred Society recognizes varsity student athletes who have achieved a grade point average of 3.67 or higher during the previous semester. Among those recognized Sept. 19 were members of the Skidmore Class of 2011, who graduated from the college in May.

CONSTRUCTION COMMENCEMENT NOTICE Spier Falls-Rotterdam New 115kV Transmission Project PSC Case 10-T-0080

Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (doing business as “National Grid”) anticipates that it will commence site preparation and construction of its Spier Falls-Rotterdam New 115kV Transmission Project on October 25, 2011. The Project Map below shows the locations where the project will take place. These locations are, in summary, a route running approximately 33 miles north-to-south from Project Map Spier Falls in Saratoga County to Rotterdam in Schenectady County, with an approximately 4 mile segment running east from that route to National Grid’s Ballston Substation. There are three principal components of this project: (i) busing (electrically joining together) National Grid’s existing Spier Falls-to-Rotterdam Lines 1 and 2; (ii) constructing a new single-circuit transmission line approximately 33 miles long predominately in the same right-of-way; and (iii) rebuilding and reconductoring National Grid’s existing Ballston Tap Line 2 running east from its Ballston Tap approximately 4 miles to National Grid’s Ballston Substation. (The voltage of each of the transmission lines involved in the project is 115 kilovolts.) Crews will begin with tree and brush clearing on October 25, 2011 and continue with building new structures and running new wire over the next 18 months. Work will be spread over several construction seasons and is expected to be completed by the spring of 2013. Any complaints during construction of the project should be directed to: Thomas P. McMahon Project Manager National Grid 300 Erie Boulevard West Syracuse, NY 13202. “FOREVER” WALK A COMMUNITY EVENT Saratoga Springs, NY – On Saturday, October 15, 201, Angel Names Association (ANA) will host its 6th annual Memorial Walk at the Saratoga Spa State Park. Registration begins at noon; the walk commences at 1:15 p.m. and will be followed by a nondenominational memorial and flower ceremony. The primary goal of the walk is to support bereaved families and to increase public awareness about pregnancy loss and infant death. More than 25,000 families each year suffer the tragedy of stillbirth; 1,700+ of them are in New York State. Guests at this year's walk will include members of Still Parents NY, the grassroots parents group that was instrumental in advocating for the passage of the Certificate of Still Birth law last month. The walk is free and all who have been touched by the death of a baby are welcome to attend. Participants can opt to create personal fundraising pages online, obtain sponsors and make individual donations. These donations help support stillbirth research and fund ANAʼs programs, all of which are offered gratis to the community and families across the country. "The Memorial Walk is a wonderful, uplifting family event," remarked ANA's cofounder Michelle Mosca. "Often times when a pregnancy ends or a baby dies, we don't know what to say or how to help. The walk offers an opportunity to support bereaved families, and to show that their baby's life, however short, had an impact on others." The walk has grown each year, and in 2010 more than 400 people participated, with some having come from as far away as OH. "Each year we see more families, and we know that the event has such a positive impact on those who attend," said Mosca. "We hear so many inspiring stories," added Mosca. A favorite from last year was the 83 year-old man who walked the full three miles, stopping only for quick snacks to stave off his diabetes. His mission was to honor the memory of his wife of 60 years, and the lives of the five children and grandchildren who had died before, during and shortly after birth. He completed the walk, listened to their names being read during the memorial ceremony, and selected a memorial rose for each one. In an email shortly after the walk, his daughter remarked, "Finally, after all these years, he now has a sense of peace." Memorial Walk corporate sponsors include the Adirondack Trust Company, Balet Flowers & Design, Beachin' Baubles Jewelry, Corinth Merchants Association, Freihoferʼs, Gallery 9 North, JCB Specialties, Mary Ann's Cakes, Cookies & Pies, National Quarry Services, Ashley Rosenbrock Photography, Sentron Associates, State Farm, Kendra Schieber, Michael and Linda Toohey, and the Watervliet Arsenal Historical Society. For more information please, or contact Michelle Mosca at, or call 518-654-2411.
