COURTHOUSE GALLERY: Naomi Lewis November 16 - December 20, 2013 This event is FREE and open to the public. Naomi Lewis will exhibit a series of works on paper and digital prints. By assembling a network of repeated visual elements that overlap and interlace with each other she creates structures that resemble forms in nature. The patterns in her work are used to create decorative “pseudoâ€? wallpaper, paper cut doilies, or modern day “samplersâ€?, works layering images and stitching, which are loosely based on Colonial era “needlework samplersâ€?. Multiple layers are created not only by the patterns of interweaving forms, but also by combining her own drawings with remnants from loved ones, such as handwritten recipes, notes or buttons. Her work celebrates the connection between domestic craft, such as wallpaper, doilies, and samplers, with her own personal history. Naomi Lewis received her M.F.A. in Printmaking from University at Albany, and her BachelorĘźs degree in Studio Art from Skidmore College. Recent exhibitions include Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region; Natura at Saratoga Arts Center; Assiduity, and Complex and Compelling at Albany Center Gallery; Infinite Images: Technologies of Printmaking and Beyond at the Mandeville Gallery at Union College, Schenectady, NY. She has also shown her work at Pierogi Files in NYC, The Arts Center in Troy, NY, The Tang Museum at Skidmore College, and the Albany Institute for History and Art, Albany, NY. Her awards include a SOS Grant from The New York Foundation for the Arts, and a residency at Millay Colony, Austerlitz, NY. She lives in Albany, NY and is currently the Exhibition and Outreach Coordinator at the University Art Museum, University at Albany. This exhibition is funded in part by Hacker Boat Company, Inc., and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. The Courthouse Gallery hours during exhibitions are Tuesday through Friday 12 – 5 pm, Saturday 12 – 4 pm, and all other times by appointment. The Courthouse Gallery is located at the side entrance of the Old County Courthouse, corner of Canada and Lower Amherst Streets, Lake George, NY. Miss Penny

This is little Miss Penny and here is her story. She is a little Min Pin about 8 lbs, 12 months old. She is up to date on vaccines and microchipped. She is the cutest, sweetest love bug and needs a family to call her own. This older couple picked her out from a breeder and could not afford any veterinary care. One day she ran out, got hit by a car and her leg was broken in two places. They could not afford to have it fixed so it healed slightly off kilter. Miraculously she jumps, plays, runs and you would never know that this happened to her except occasionally she holds the back leg up. We are all not perfect and this should not stop anyone from giving this cutie pie a furever home. She is the perfect lap dog and she is housebroken and crate trained. Please call the shelter for more info at 518-654-6220 or come by to meet her.

Create a gift wrapping area - Nearly as much energy goes into wrapping gifts as purchasing them. Some people excel at wrapping gifts, while others do not enjoy the task at all. Part of the trouble with gift-wrapping is the room and tools needed to wrap all of those holiday treasures. But a gift-wrap station in a corner of the home that is seldom used can make wrapping presents any time of the year easier and more enjoyable. * Find a place to store gift wrap and the tools needed to wrap gifts. Many people find the back of a closet door works perfectly. * Install wire hanger racks so the gift wrap tubes can be stored vertically along the surface of the door. * Install a folding shelf on a hinge, and use that shelf to do your wrapping. Fold the shelf up when it is not needed and secure it with a latch at the top. * Hang hooks to store tape and scissors. Attach the scissors to the hook with a string so they won't go missing. * A basket tucked nearby can house bows and ribbons so that they are easily stored until needed. Having the wrappig station so accessible also allows you to take inventory of supplies and restock when necessary.

Understanding Medicare by Patricia Smith (NAPSI)—During MedicareĘźs annual open enrollment period, which ends December 7, millions of Medicare beneficiaries must decide on their Medicare Advantage (MA) health plan for the coming year. While many factors go into deciding about a plan—cost, choice of doctors, benefits—thereĘźs one important question Medicare beneficiaries should ask: What is the quality rating of the plans IĘźm considering? A high rating means better health care and the best value for your money. Medicare uses a system called Star Ratings. Plans receive a rating of up to five stars. These ratings are based on things like how well the plan does at keeping people healthy by making sure they get the treatments, tests and vaccines they need to prevent illness, how quickly you can get an appointment and see specialists, and how the plan responds to your complaints and concerns. For 2014, over a third of MA plans will receive four or more stars, which is an increase from 28 percent in 2013. Seven of the 11 MA plans earning five stars this year are members of the Alliance of Community Health Plans, an organization representing the nationĘźs leading health plans. You can learn more about MA plans—and their quality ratings— using the Medicare Plan Finder at MA plans are called “Medicare Health Plansâ€? in the Plan Finder. The National Committee for Quality Assurance also evaluates quality in MA plans; those rankings can be found at

Shirt Factory plans season of holiday shopping events; Building-wide gift cards now available GLENS FALLS, NY — The Shirt Factory Arts and Healing Center announces its schedule of holiday shopping events featuring the many eclectic shops, galleries and artists housed in this historic building. Things kick off on Thanksgiving Weekend with the 12th annual Open House and continue through December. Shopping The Shirt Factory is a completely different shopping experience than the mall — and you're not only shopping local, you're shopping locally made. Here's the skinny on each event: Holiday Open House Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 29 to December 1 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day Our signature event, covering Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and an extra shopping day on Sunday! Not only are more than 30 of us open, but we also have a record number (34!) of guest artists and artisans filling our hallways. Experience the Shirt Factory's energy at its busiest! Enjoy free acupuncture, artist demos, sales and minilessons. Ladies' Night Thursday, December 12 - 5 to 8 p.m. In conjunction with Downtown Glens Falls' collaborative Ladies' Night, 10 select shops will be open late on this night with special sales, refreshments and treats for the ladies. December Open House Saturday and Sunday, December 14 and 15 - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day We have so much fun at our first open house that we repeat it two weeks later! Shop locally-made in one stop with the many studios, shops and galleries of The Shirt Factory and guest artists in our hallways. Come again and see what you might have missed before! Friends and Family Night Friday, December 20 - 5 to 8 p.m. A festive evening with special sales, refreshments and more. As a special treat, a cappella groups Primrose Lane and The Skirts will be strolling the hallways singing Christmas carols for visitors. All are invited. Last Minute Dash Saturday, December 21 - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Don't worry, we've got you covered. We are open the last Saturday before Christmas for your holiday shopping needs. LARAC is also open from 10-5 as part of Last Minute Dash. Santa is visiting us from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come and tell him what you want for Christmas! As a brand-new convenience developed just in time for holiday shopping, The Shirt Factory is selling gift cards that can be used at more than 20 participating locations within the building. You can buy them in $10 increments and are sold at these first floor locations: Shirt Factory Gallery, bjsartworks Framing Gallery Studio, SensibiliTeas and Adirondack Quilts. A list of the participating studios is on the website, The participants also have a sign posted at their location. About The Shirt Factory Arts & Healing Center More than 80 retail shops, artist studios, galleries, services and healing arts are housed in the former McMullen-Leavens Shirt Factory. You can shop, take a class, see artists at work, visit galleries and learn about local history at the Shirt Factory. Owner Eric Unkauf purchased the building in 1999 thinking to use it for a machine shop. He decided instead to divide it into rentable spaces. Artists flooded the building, loving it for its unique look, incredible windows and light. These tenants form the colorful community of The Shirt Factory Arts and Healing Center as it is known today. The Shirt Factory is located at the corner of Lawrence and Cooper Streets in Glens Falls, New York.

You Can Learn A Lot By Listening To Your Car (NAPSI)—Drivers who listen closely will find that their car is actually communicating with them by using a language all its own. Sounds such as squealing, thumping, hissing and grinding are all signs that your vehicle may be trying to tell you something. Thatʟs the word from the experts at the Car Care Council. While many motorists are familiar with noises their vehicles make on a daily basis, any noise that is new, different or suspicious may indicate a problem. For example, a high-pitched squeal that stops when pressing on the brake pedal is a sign that a vehicleʟs brakes should be inspected. The same goes for grinding that could be the result of worn brake pads that should be replaced. Thumping that increases and decreases with the speed of the vehicle could mean a trip to your local service center. The diagnosis may be a tire problem like a bubble in the sidewall or torn rubber that could lead to a blowout. Under The Hood As Well Sounds under the hood can also indicate that your vehicle is in need of attention. Hissing may be caused by a disconnected or cracked vacuum hose.
