In May The Hudson River Shakespeare Company will present “You Know I CanĘźt Hear You When The WaterĘźs Running,â€? by Robert Anderson. This sweet and funny play consists of four vignettes and addresses gently and incisively the perils and pitfalls of sex and relationships. From a father trying to find the right words to explain masturbation to his young son, to a playwright insisting his leading man appear naked on stage, the characters struggle with the absurdities of our relationships to our own bodies and to each other in this sometimes sad, sometimes hysterical, and always honest play. Performances take place at The Little Theater on the Farm, Plum Road, Fort Edward on May 3rd and 4th at 8pm with matinees on May 4th and 5th at 2pm. Tickets are $10 and $8 for high school students and seniors 60 or older. Please call 7474418 or email hrsc1999@aol.com to make reservations. Visit hudsonrivershakespeare.org for additional information.

Action TV Systems located at 130 Saratoga Ave. South Glens Falls has recently joined the New York State eWASTE Alliance Network (EWAN) and is registered as an official collection site with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to accept covered electronic equipment for recycling. According to owner, Gary Bombard, Action TV Systems has been servicing consumer electronic products since 1975. The program is facilitated by Regional Computer Recycling & Recovery (RCR&R), a Certified Electronics Recycler. According to RCR&R: “Televisions may contain hazardous waste elements such as lead solder, mercury, cadmium and beryllium. Monitors, CRTĘźs and televisions may have anywhere from 4 to 8 lbs. of lead. These types of equipment need to be recycled properly in an environmentally sound manner.â€? The New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling & Reuse Act went into effect April 1, 2011. The Manufacturers Take-Back Law mandates recycling of covered electronic equipment (CEE) at no charge to the consumer. “I noticed that many of the collection sites accept everything except televisions,â€? commented Bombard. “Being in the television business, I decided to fill that gap by accepting only televisions,â€? he said. Products accepted by Action TV Systems include, LCD, LED, Plasma and Tube Televisions. People wanting to dispose of a television must call 798-5235 for an appointment. More information is available at actiontvsystems.com.

518-587-5188 ext. 412 TOWN OF DAY RESIDENTS - SUPERVISOR POSITION After much time spent talking with my family I have made the decision that I will not be running for Town Supervisor for another 2 year term. I do this with some sadness as I love the job of supervisor that gives me the opportunity to help people, to provide the town the best services at the lowest cost, and the privilege to have met so many people over the last 18 years that love this town as much as I do. I have the greatest group of employees and volunteers to work with as anyone could ask for. I have made many wonderful friends at the county level and had the privilege to chair the county Veterans Committee for the past 4 years. On the other hand, it is time for the town to have a new face, new ideas and new opportunities and time for me to spend more time with my family and as the saying goes “take time to smell the roses along the way. I hope to stay involved in the town, to volunteer for veterans causes, my church and those organizations that work to help others and to do some traveling. It has been a privilege to serve as your Town Supervisor and as your representative on the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors. Thank you for that opportunity. Mary Ann Johnson

Sembrich Looks Ahead to 2013 Summer Season “Titans of Opera — Grand theme in an intimate setting BOLTON LANDING, NY — The Sembrich, located at 4800 Lakeshore Drive in Bolton Landing, announces its 2013 summer series of chamber music concerts and more, running from June 8 through September 5. This season's theme is “Titans of Opera. “Although our summer series at The Sembrich has gained a reputation over the years as a destination for intimate chamber music concerts, this season we are taking on a grander theme, says Artistic Director Richard Wargo. “We're honoring opera composers Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner on the bicentennials of their births, and Benjamin Britten on the centennial of his. “But don't expect Rhinemaidens or Valkyries to descend upon Sembrich Point!, adds Mr. Wargo. “It's just that we'll be taking the opportunity of these important musical anniversaries to illuminate intimate aspects of these master composers, in miniature, with the added intimacy that The Sembrich studio affords. Highlights of the “Titans of Opera season include a performance by the Hyperion Quartet of Verdi's lone chamber piece String Quartet in E minor; Sigfried Idyll, composed by Wagner as a birthday gift for his wife and performed by members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Lake George Music Festival; Wesendonck Lieder, Wagner's only song cycle, presented by the Brooklyn Art Song Society; and a Britten centennial tribute by Music from Salem. Additionally, special this summer season, costumes of Madame Sembrich's will be on display during museum hours (10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. seven days a week from June 15 to September 15). “Two of Madame Sembrich's rarely-seen costumes will be displayed: The garden scene gown from Verdi's La Traviata, and a jeweled tunic she wore in Wagner's Meistersinger, says Beth Barton-Navitsky, the Sembrich's executive director. “The museum is looking forward to a busy 76th year! About the Sembrich: The Marcella Sembrich Memorial Association, Inc. (MSMA), founded in 1940, honors international opera singer Marcella Sembrich at her former teaching studio and woodland retreat on Lake George, by continuing the tradition of musical performances. Each summer, renowned international musicians perform in The Sembrich Studio reminiscent of the chambers and salons in which chamber music was first played.

A Day Just For Mom By Tresa Erickson Every year as the second Sunday in May approaches, millions of people across the country turn their thoughts to Mom and find ways to let her know how much she means to them. Although it wasn't always celebrated on the second Sunday in May, Mother's Day has been around in some form since ancient times. The ancient Greeks and Romans held a festival each spring honoring maternal goddesses like Rhea and Cybele. During these celebrations, participants would put on parades, play games and participate in masquerades. Early Christians held their own festival in honor of the Virgin Mary. When the EngSERVICES SER VICES AND SA SATISFACTION TISFFACTION A GU GUARANTEED UARANTEED lish took up the celebration, they expanded it to include all mothers and renamed it Mothering Sunday. On this day, individuals attended services for the Virgin Mary and then visited their own mothers, bringing them flowers, gifts and treats. The popularity of Mothering Sunday had faded considerably by the start of the 19th century but remerged in the 1870s due to SIGN UP BY Y 5/21/13 5/2 /21/13 & SA SAVE AVE the efforts of activist and writer Julia Ward Howe. Although many embraced her idea of a day for peace, the celebration of Mother's Day as we know it today did not come about until the early 20th century when Anna Jarvis introduced it. As a child, Anna Jarvis had heard her mother pray for a day dedicated solely to mothers, living and deceased, and honoring their contributions. When her mother died in 1905, Jarvis recalled her mother's wish and started campaigning for a national holiday for mothers everywhere. She wrote letters to many leaders in her community and across the country and spoke about the matter at many functions. By 1911, Jarvis' efforts had paid off, with nearly every state in the country celebrating the day. Just three years later on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill into law, establishing the second Sunday of every May Mother's Day. Today, Mother's Day is celebrated in various nations around the world. Spouses and children all over take time out to honor the mothers in their lives, and for that, Anna Jarvis and her mother would be thankful.

GLENS FALLS, NY (April 17, 2013): Community, Work & Independence, Inc. (CWI), will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a Gala Celebration on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at the Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center, Lake George, New York. Festivities will begin at 6:00 PM and include a cocktail hour, silent and live auctions, dinner and dancing to the sounds of the popular Grand Central Station Band. Co-Chairs for the event are Tom and Sally Hoy and Master of Ceremonies will be Mark Mulholland, WNYT-TV 13 Saratoga-North Country News Chief. The live auction will be conducted by professional Auctioneer Martin Seelye. Among the items to be auctioned include a one-week stay in the Outer Banks, North Carolina, and tickets to a Red Sox vs. Yankees game in the Green Monster. Tickets are $125 a person and must be purchased in advance of the event. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact CWI at 793-4700 ext. 12129 or email gala@ cwinc.org. The funds raised from the event will help CWI continue to provide specialized programs and services to 1,200 individuals with disabilities in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Essex counties. Major sponsors for CWI’s 50th Anniversary Gala include Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company; Bartlett, Pontiff, Stewart & Rhodes, PC; TD Bank; Suburban Propane; Rosenbaum Media; Jaeger & Flynn Associates; Dr. Michael and Toni Homenick; The Bonadio Group; Associates of Glens Falls/Philadelphia Insurance Company; Time Warner Business Class/Subsidium Technologies; Tom and Sally Hoy; CDPHP; McKernon’s Landscaping & Turf Maintenance; M.M. Hayes Company, Inc.; Hudson Headwaters Health Network; Carmody Ford; TMG LLC/McCormick LLC; Northern Mechanical; Kinney Drug Foundation and Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation. Since 1963, CWI has worked to bring about positive change and hope for many. A cornerstone in communities across the four-county region, CWI has transformed the lives of numerous individuals with disabilities and other barriers. Through the provision of quality and innovative services, CWI, a not-forprofit community rehabilitation provider, offers a myriad of services to meet the needs of people who are developmentally and learning disabled, medically frail, brain injured, economically disadvantaged and individuals with other challenges. CWI supports these people who strive to be productive and meaningful members of their local community by offering basic services to individuals including: transportation, clinical and dental services and housing. This then builds a foundation which allows individuals to springboard toward a higher level of independence. Independence may equate to CWI helping individuals find and sustain employment, become involved with volunteer opportunities, partake in recreational opportunities, learn independent living skills, and promote self-advocacy, to name a few. Among the many services the CWI consumers provide include support services with local municipalities, assistance to local churches, nursing homes and firehouses, and delivery of Meals on Wheels to those in need in Warren and Washington counties. CWI began as Community Workshop, Inc., serving a humble contingent of six community individuals in a sheltered employment setting in the early 1960's. Fifty years later, CWI has a new name, Community, Work and Independence, Inc., and now assists approximately 1,200 individuals monthly at nearly 40 locations across the region. In addition to the now 70 individuals working in our sheltered employment program, over the past five years alone CWI has assisted clients with 868 job placements, provided residential services to nearly 50 individuals, connected 117 individuals with day programming services, transported nearly 500 passengers daily to and from various facilities and medical appointments, and supported 408 young adults transitioning from high school to the adult world. Today, CWI has grown to become one of the largest employers in the four-county region with over 750 employees. Their mission is to offer innovative supports and services, empowering people with differing abilities and needs to discover their potential and pursue the lives they envision. For more information, visit www.cwinc.org or call 518-793-4700 ext. 12129. CWI is a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization.
