July 22nd , Sunday 2pm–6pm, Little Theater on the Farm presents An Afternoon of Irish Music Featuring the bands Craic Agus Ceol, The Boys of Wexford, and the Hubbard Hall Irish Step Dancers. The Hubbard Hall Irish Dancers are a family school of Irish Dance, dedicated to keeping cultural traditions alive, and sharing and passing on a sense of creativity, fun, movement, and community through music and dance. Some of the dancers have been at Hubbard Hall for 12 years or more, learning set and Ceili dances, traditional jigs, hornpipes, slip jigs and reels, as well as original and student-driven choreographies. This program is made possible, in part, with public funds from NYS Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered locally by the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council. Little Theater on the Farm is located at 27 Plum Rd. Fort Edward, NY. Recommended donation $10 and $7 for seniors & students includes refreshments. 50/50 raffle available. Baked goods auction. IN FOND REMEMBRANCE OF RUSSELL MELVILLE and his years of contributing articles to the Pennysaver/News, we are pleased to inform his ‘gentle readers’ that we will be reprinting his articles from time to time. For new readers, we hope you will find them and interesting and entertaining as we did, and will continue to do, with these republications. IT’S ALL ABOUT COMPOSURE All is well in the Melville household. Michele has returned home to Missouri after her whirlwind visit and we are back to “normal” again. Of course when I say “normal”, I don’t mean normal by most standards. I mean normal in regards to life with Yvonne. We both try very hard to co-exist in a somewhat “normal” conventional manner, but somehow things seem to frequently go awry. Even an innocent conversation can hold dangerous implications. We both have hearing problems and more often than not, she will be talking about one subject and I will be on another completely different one. She can’t hear what I am saying and when I speak louder, she tells me to stop yelling at her. This sort of thing goes on and on until she retires to the den and her computer, which doesn’t yell back at her, and I flee to my garden where my tomato plants understand me perfectly. Under these circumstances, gentle reader, you might ask how this couple ever made it through sixty five years. I’m not sure myself. Ten kids may have had something to do with it, bet there had to be something else. Deep down, I knew I could never find another like her. The creator threw the mold away when he was finished with her, and long ago I came to the conclusion that life without her would be very dull. Somehow things seem to happen regardless of how hard we try to stay out of trouble. But you know no matter how difficult the situation, we always manage to extricate ourselves without too much damage. This reminds me of an incident that happened many years ago when we were still living down on Pine Street. This particular morning I woke up with visions of spring planting weaving through my mind. There were tomato plants to put in and onion sets to plant, and maybe another row of peas. What a glorious day it will be, I told myself. Alas, it was not to be. Just then, Yvonne’s best “take charge” voice rent the air. “Get up Russ, we are going to clean the garage today and go to the dump.” What a revolting development, I thought to myself, all my blissful plans evaporating. “Hurry up,” said she, “we have a lot of work to do.” In those days of course, the dump was much different. Located out Wall Street, it was nothing more than a sand pit and you threw trash over the side from atop a steep embankment. We had trash in all kinds of containers, one of which was a two handled wash tub. Yvonne said, “come on Russ, you grab one handle and I’ll gab the other, but be careful not to toss the tub too, I want to save it; on the count of three, we’ll hurl the contents over the bank.” Now, gentle reader, in order to understand this situation, you have to realize that one of her attributes was her powerful physical strength. On the count of three, she ripped the handle right off that wash tub while I was still hanging on to mine. The full weight of the tub nearly catapulted me over the edge of the bank down into the garbage at the bottom. Not only that, but the unexpected weight nearly tore my arm off. The end result was a one handled wash tub, injured pride and a sore arm. I didn’t think those kids would ever stop laughing, I felt like throwing them down with the trash. Yvonne tried to keep a straight face but failed miserably. She said, “what do you want me to do with this handle?” I wanted to tell her but I kept my composure even under extreme duress. That’s my advice to all you long suffering men out there. Even under extremes, keep your composure! Your friend, Russ Melville

Some seeds like tomatoes and peppers must be started inside in March but the real value (savings) to be gained from vegetable gardening is from crops that we seed directly in the garden. I have to say that there really isn’t anything at all difficult about starting seeds directly in the garden... much easier than starting seeds indoors in winter. Lettuce and all the other greens like chard and spinach are good examples. Radishes are also very rewarding since you can sow a row every two weeks and they grow and mature in less than a month. Go to the garden center and pick up the “Vegetable Schedule”. It is a wonderful resource for the beginning gardener showing when the different plants and seeds should be planted. You can get one at any Hewitt’. Beans are easy from seed. Let’s take a look at beans. According to the vegetable schedule you can start sowing them in early May or anytime through the third week of July. As you can see, there’s plenty of time to start a crop or two of beans. Now let’s take a look at a bean seed pack. The back of the seed pack has complete growing instructions. Following the instructions, make a little trench 2” deep as per the instructions and placed the seeds at the bottom. Then cover them with 2” of soil and water them in. Now just need to keep them moist and they’ll sprout in a week or less. Once they sprout, you’ll need to thin them out by removing any that were closer together than 6” Growing instructions are on the packet. spacing the seed pack indicated they need. It is tempting to let them all got but you’ll get better results if the plants are spaced so they get lots of light and air circulation. That’s pretty much it. All seeds work the same way...corn, beets, radishes and so on. Learn to use your Vegetable Schedule to time your plantings. Once you go through a season, you’ll see that it is possible to get a great deal of food from even a small plot. “It’d too late to start a vegetable garden” is also something beginners like to believe...that they’ve missed the opportunity to have a vegetable garden once Memorial Day has passed. If you spend some time with the vegetable schedule you’ll soon see that vegetables aren’t something that you “plant in the spring and harvest in the fall”. There is a huge planting season that won’t even start until late June and into July. Here’s a list of just some of our summer sowing possibilities: • Basil-Sow seeds late June through late July. • Beans-Sow seeds of quick varieties until 3rd week of July. • Broccoli-Sow seeds until mid July. • Brussels Sprouts-Sow seeds until mid July. • Cabbage-Plant transplants through mid July. • Carrots-Sow seeds through mid July. • Collards-Plant transplants until August 1st. • Dill-Sow seeds late July to early August. • Escarole, endive-Sow seeds early July through August. Sowing the bean seeds. • Kale-Sow seeds through first week of August. • Kohlrabi-Sow seeds through first week of August. • Lettuce-Sow in groups two weeks through September 1st. • Mustard-Sow seeds mid July to mid August. • Parsley-Sow seeds mid June through mid August. • Peas-Sow seeds in early to mid July. • Radish-Sow seeds until early September at two week intervals. • Spinach-Sow seeds late July to early August. • Summer squash-Sow seeds until mid July. Beans properly spaced. • Turnip-Sow seeds late June to early August. Seed packs are cheap so play around with them. There are plenty at the garden center so take some time to read the backs. Pay attention to the “days to harvest” information. As of now we have at least 100 days left until frost. You can have a crop of beans in harvest in 50 to 60 days or radishes in less than 30! Many crops like Brussels Sprouts and Swiss Chard aren’t bothered by frost and can be harvested into October most years. There’s something quite rewarding about starting your crops from seed right in the garden. Try it out... you’ll be hooked in no time. Thanks for the read.

Heading for Home: Birdies and Brews Golf Event by Emily Marcason-Tolmie

Joseph Battaglia has been a fan of both thoroughbred and standardbred horseracing his whole life. The president of Heading for Home Racehorse Retraining and Adoption Center, Battaglia realized when he became a standardbred racehorse owner in Saratoga Springs that there is a critical need for the aftercare of retired racehorses in the racing industry. Battaglia, along with other current members of the Heading for Home board, started the charity to help with addressing the “where do they go after racing” issue. “We thought the concept of Heading for Home would be an option for owners to consider,” he said. Volunteers of Heading Home have various backgrounds in the local equine industries and in the local business community. Heading for Home board member and practicing attorney, Sarah Burger, has represented clients in the horse industry. A native of Saratoga, she grew up around horses and believes in the mission of Heading for Home. “The organization’s focus on the aftercare of racehorses in conjunction with its focus on pairing horses with equine therapy services is so important in the horse industry,” Burger said. “I am a part of this organization because I believe in what it is doing.” The common denominator: offering the racing industry an option for horses at retirement. “A success story about a racehorse going on to a purposeful and fulfilling life after racing activity is something that should be celebrated as much as any successes they may have had on the racetrack,” Battaglia said. It is no secret that Saratoga Springs is a horse town. “The horses are the stars of the show when they are on the track and have much more to give after their racing days have ended. It is a responsibility that everyone associated with racing in any way should share,” he said. He thinks the community should be concerned for horses as they age off the track. “Saratoga being a racing community should take this responsibility very seriously since so much of our local economy is driven by its history of hosting horseracing. We owe a lot back to the horses. Just look at the walls of almost any Photo: Retired racehorses establishment you go into in the Saratoga area and you will likely Where’s Danny and Rock see images of horses.” Dj competed at Saratoga Heading for Home is one way Battaglia and the all-volunteer tracks and went through the board and staff are trying to save one horse at a time. The program Heading for Home program. Photos by Tracey Buyce accepts both thoroughbreds and standardbreds. “We help transition Horse Photography. them from the racetrack environment to a more relaxed setting and then evaluate each for potential options to adopters,” he said. “Our horses have participated in equine assisted counseling programs while in the care of Heading for Home. We are in the process of developing our connections in the community to use our horses and facilities for physical therapy programs as well. We are open to coordinating with other charities to expand the potential uses for our horses to create as many off the track options as possible for the horses,” he said. Heading for Home is a member of the Saratoga Racehorse Aftercare Charitable Endeavors collation (RACE). “RACE works together with other local charities in support of our common racehorses’ aftercare missions, including hosting the upcoming Run/Walk for the Horses on September 1st,” Battaglia said. The Run/Walk will be held at the Saratoga Spa State Park and will benefit participating local non-profits that rescue and provide second chances for ex-racehorses. Heading for Home is also participating in a joint program with Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at its farm this summer. On Tuesday, July 17 Heading for Home is hosting its second annual charity golf event at Fairways of Halfmoon Golf Club, which includes local craft beer tastings at its award ceremony. The cost is $125 a player and includes lunch, dinner, golf, cart and craft beer samples. Raffles and prizes will round out the day. One hundred percent of proceeds raised at the tournament benefits local Heading for Home programs. “We rely heavily on donations and other support to keep our programs going and possibly expand them when feasible,” Battaglia said. Anyone interested in directly supporting the golf event can participate as players, sponsors or perhaps even by providing raffle items for the event. “The topic of racehorse aftercare becomes a hot topic during the local thoroughbred meet but the need goes on throughout the year. If someone shares that concern this is one way for them to step up and be an active participant in making a difference,” Battaglia said. For more information on how to register for the golf event or to volunteer please visit the organization’s website at Emily Marcason-Tolmie, a Saratoga native, is a writer, researcher, wife and mother. Emily and her husband, Ryan, are the parents to two wonderful little boys, ages 4 and 1.

STAY SAFE ON WET ROADWAYS ALL YEAR LONG Weather plays a role in driver safety regardless of what time of year it may be. From wind and rain to snow and ice, travelers routinely navigate roads when conditions are far from ideal. Wet roadways are a common occurrence. The automotive resource AAA advises that wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. Many crashes occur when drivers do not recognize the need to change their driving habits in wet conditions. Mastering driving techniques on slick, water-logged roads can help motorists avoid accidents and injuries. See and be seen Before they even get behind the wheel, drivers should inspect all headlights and taillights to ensure they are in working order. Replace any bulbs that have burned out, and clean cloudy lens covers. Drivers need to see roadways clearly, so they should make sure their windshields are free of streaks, debris and water. Periodically replacing windshield wiper blades can ensure they’re working optimally when drivers need them most. Slow down and give other motorists space Slowing down and stopping can take extra time when roads are wet. AAA notes that, with as little as 1/12-inch of water on the road, tires have to displace a gallon of water a second to keep the rubber in contact with the street. Driving slowly can make it much easier for vehicles to stop. Plus, driving slowly enables drivers to see obstacles or pedestrians more easily, especially in heavy rains. Exercise caution with puddles and running water It may be difficult to gauge the depth and ferocity of water flowing in a roadway. Quickly moving water can cause a vehicle to hydroplane or even move a large vehicle. A deep puddle also can affect drivers’ ability to steer or cause vehicles to stall. Take another route rather than risk driving through large puddles or areas where water is flowing on roadways. Skidding Do not slam on the brakes if a car begins to skid or hydroplane, advise experts. Instead, ease up slowly from the accelerator and then steer the vehicle into the skid or straight. Then accelerate smoothly once more. Sudden, jerky movements when a car begins to skid can exacerbate the situation.

CALL 454-5502 or 454-5503

Maintain tires Tire treads should be checked at the start of a new season to ensure the rubber will be able to grip the road. Rotate tires according to the manufacturer’s requirements, or every 5,000 miles. Properly inflated tires will improve traction as well.

(Fax 454-5542) • Deadline Monday 4pm

Wet weather can make driving challenging. Driving slowly and modifying other habits when roads are wet can make for safe road trips.
