A GATHERING TO SHARE STORIES ON THE HISTORY OF A WOMAN’S PLACE                                                Did you live in or near Athol, NY between 1972 and 1984? Do you remember a women’s retreat called “A Woman’s Place”, located on property formerly known as Moose Mountain Lodge? Join author Lorraine Duvall June 3, from 2 – 3:30 p.m. at Thurman town hall, as she discusses her research on the history of A Woman’s Place, an intentional community. Duvall will be especially interested in hearing memories of those in attendance at the gathering. Bring your reminiscences, photos and/or questions for this informal discussion. The town hall is located at 311 Athol Rd., Athol. Five to ten women lived at this Drexel Road site communally at any one time. They provided lodging for guests in four cabins and held retreats in the restored barn, offering self-help workshops at a time when women came together during the second wave of feminism. Duvall will share what she’s learned from newspaper articles and interviews with women who were a part of the collective and neighbors who lived in Athol during its existence. What was your experience? Perhaps you were a neighbor or a schoolmate in Warrensburg? Bring your memories to help flesh out the story on this community.   The meeting is jointly sponsored by the Warrensburgh Historical Society and the John Thurman Historical Society. A reception will follow the discussion. If you are unable to make the meeting, or want to share your views privately, please call Duvall (518-576-9109), send an email lorauthor@icloud.com, or a letter to her at Lorraine Duvall, PO Box 246, Keene NY 12942. Your contributions to this slice of history of the Town of Thurman and the surrounding Adirondack communities will be most valuable and appreciated.

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week

The DDR 3

These 3 were an unwanted litter of 9 week old Boxer mix puppies in Alabama who were brought to a high kill shelter once they could be taken from their Mother. Our rescue coordinator saw them at the shelter and knew she had to save them! She soon was able to place them in a foster home that took very good care of them and got them all prepared to head up North so that they could be adopted! They are certainly friendly, well socialized puppies that can’t wait to get a home!

Christian

Meet Christian!! He’s approximately 13 weeks old and he is in foster care with a family we have taken several dogs from! They do a great job in giving them much TLC and having them ready for transport! He is VERY very sweet, a Hound/Lab mix who is around 16 pounds! Christian is good with other animals, kids, and more, and he’s ready to be in his furever home! Can that be you??

Nori & Neva

These white, 11 week old Pittie mix sisters are absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Unfortunately in the South if Pitbull puppies enter a high kill shelter, they are often put at the top of the list to be euthanized since Pitbulls are considered a “dangerous breed” due to all of the dogfighting that occurs in the South. We know the truth, that Pitties are the most loving gentle giants! They are incredibly sweet and we can’t wait for them to find a furever home

Step 6 - Enjoy a weed free bed.

Over the years I’ve shared my method of using cardboard under mulch for weed control. Every year people will come up and thank me for saving them so much time once they tried it. Here it is, easy edging and mulching; a quick way to conquer weeds for great looking beds. I have an area that is difficult to mow around so I decided to turn it into a mulched bed to make mowing easier. I used the hose to outline the edge I want. It will be a nice rounded bed that will be easy to mow around. Then I finish edging the new bed. I use a straight bladed shovel for a nice neat edge. Simply slice into the grass at the edge of the bed at a steep angle 4” deep. Grass can’t cross that barrier of air so it won’t make it into the bed on the other side of the trench. I just toss the clumps I dig out into the bed...why waste good soil I say. “But what about all the grass and weeds in the bed...and all the clumps of grass you tossed in?” you’re asking. I suppose that I could spend a couple of hours digging out all the grass and weeds, but I have a much quicker and easier way to deal with that...cardboard! A layer of cardboard will smother the grass and it will die. All the clumps of sod that I tossed in will compost into the soil. I’m always on the prowl for large pieces of cardboard. Here’s the bed all covered with cardboard. I used a razor knife to slice the cardboard along the edge of the bed. Make sure that the cardboard overlaps heavily so the grass and weeds can’t get through...8” of overlap will stop them. I also used the razor knife to cut the cardboard so it fits around the trunks of the pines and hydrangea. Now all that’s left is putting mulch on the cardboard. This is the fun part, and it goes down quickly. I put a 4” to 5” layer of cedar mulch down. There are many types of mulch, but I like cedar because it’s cheap and smells nice too. Now the mulch is down, the area looks great and mowing will be simple. It looks a little sparse now but more plants can be added to the bed easily. Just brush the mulch aside, cut a hole in the cardboard and plant....easy peasy and it looks so much better now. In all, this took less than an hour, and I used 7 bags of cedar mulch. In the vegetable garden, I use the same method except that I’ll use straw on top of the cardboard instead of cedar mulch. During a wet year like this one, I’ll wait until later in the season to cover the soil to give it a chance to dry out and warm up. Seed beds and other areas can’t get covered and still need to be weeded but at least the aisles remain weed free. By fall earthworms will have eaten most of the cardboard and any that is left can be turned into the soil along with the straw adding organic matter and feeding the soil. Thanks for the read.

COR IN FOND REMEMBRANCE OF RUSSELL MELVILLE and his years of contributing articles to the Pennysaver/News, we are pleased to inform his ‘gentle readers’ that we will be reprinting his articles from time to time. For new readers, we hope you will find them and interesting and entertaining as we did, and will continue to do, with these republications. MY FAMILY AND ME Daughter Michele has been visiting us for the past few days. She is happy-go-lucky, doesn’t worry about anything until the roof caves in. I do believe she has an empathy with the strange and mysterious. Weird things happen when she is around. The stars don’t seem to line up properly and this sort of thing seems to rub off on the rest of us so that none of us functions properly in her presence. A few days ago she and her mother went on a shopping trip to Glens Falls. I am always a little uneasy when the two of them go off like that; anything can happen and usually does. So I’m sitting here having my late afternoon coffee, oblivious to any impending dark clouds on my horizon, when the phone rang imperiously. Startled out of my reverie, I reluctantly heaved myself out of my chair to answer the thing only to hear a strident voice on the other end. “Hi Russ, I’m in trouble,” I said, “Who is this?” not recognizing the voice. “It’s your wife, who do you think it is?” So, having established that point, I asked her, “what’s the matter?” “I’ve lost my car keys and Yvette is coming down.” And just then daughter Yvette came bursting in the door with a harried look on her face, saying “Mom’s in trouble.” I told her “I know she’s in trouble, she’s always in trouble. As a matter of fact, she’s on the phone right now so you talk to her.” I got the heck out of the middle of that one, gentler reader. The upshot of all this was that Yvette picked up the extra set of keys and went racing over the mountain to the rescue. They opened up the trunk and sure enough there were the keys, dropped somehow when they loaded the groceries. No harm done. Dan had to get his own supper and I had to wait an extra hour for mine, just another example of us long-suffering husbands. Well, they finally got back home loaded down with their purchases, chattering like a couple of magpies over their traumatic adventure. I helped put away the groceries and then went out to the garden to get out of the line of fire. My garden is a blessing in many ways, one of which is an escape and refuge from turmoil. An hour later we sat down to a meal of new potatoes and string beans in milk and butter with a side dish of freshly pulled beets and greens. Many times I’ve been tempted to rant and rave about my perfidious family but they somehow usually manage to turn things around. It would be foolhardy on my part to do that just before supper, wouldn’t it? I may not be too bright but I’ve sure learned something over the years. If the meals come on time or a little late, count your blessings for you are fortunate indeed. The above was only a small example of the shenanigans going on during Michele’s visit here with us. Yvette tries to spend as much time with her sister as she is able. The three of them, the mother and two daughters, and whoever else they can inveigle into their schemes, manage to squeeze out as much fun and frivolity from their get-togethers as possible. After all, life is short and who knows when they will get together again. Me, I just sit here in my easy chair and listen to all the hilarity emanating from the den. This is what I had in mind sixty five years ago when I spotted that French girl and married her. That’s my advice to young folks out there. It’s all about family, family, family. It may take a while and a lot of stamina but stick it out and it will pay rich dividends. Weather the storm, the benefits are enormous. Your friend, Russ Melville May 20th, Sunday, 2 pm Little Theater on the Farm presents the Atkinson Family Band. Little Theater on the Farm is located at 27 Plum Rd. Fort Edward, NY. Recommended donation $10 and $7 for seniors & students. Refreshments and 50/50, baked goods raffle available.
