WE HAD THE PRIVILEGE of being in the 4th of July Parade this weekend. Our group of Committee Members and volunteers worked throughout the week, preparing for it, gathering supplies, painting, running errands etc. This group of caring, giving individuals again came together giving of themselves and their time as they have many times over the last two years. People waved and smiled, laughed and were having a very good time. Many people commenting on how cute the kids looked and the children felt very proud because they had worked very hard - until the very end of the parade ( I normally would not address negative behavior but after giving it thought I decided itĘźs the right thing to do). A gentleman in uniform in the parade started yelling things at us like, the old t-shirts were better, there was nothing wrong with the old playground, etc., as his friends chuckled and laughed, saying it to every child and adult in our group. One gentleman looked at me in a shocked way as we continued to walk past, I put my hand on this manĘźs shoulder and smiled and continued to walk away. Started to answer all the questions from the children and adults in our group. Why was this man so angry, did we know him, we had never seen him before or spoke to him, had not seen him at a playground meeting, school board meeting. Did the man know all that was going on?...No. Our t-shirts were designed again by the children, like they were 16+ years ago - N.Y. State is requiring no wooden structures for playgrounds, we looked at keeping it, repairing it and even Ryno covering it. It had many issues, not just arsenic in the pressure treated lumber. It was rotten and dangerous in many ways. Things were not excessible to all children with all needs, we surveyed every child from Head Start to 4th grade, we had several open to the public meetings to answer questions and give understanding. This group of hardworking people - with their families volunteering a lot of their time and energy to take care of our littlest community members in very hard economic times in a consolidate everything world. We all came together to resolve a problem and make things better. A decision was made, we have and continue to do the best we can. ItĘźs taken longer than we like but the mountain we are climbing is quite high. For the adults and kids who walked that day, IĘźm so proud of your behavior and how you handled yourselves - Great job!
