Decor trends for 2012 Do-it-yourselfers “LOC-in” latest trend in hardwood floors (MS) -- According to experts in the hardwood flooring industry, the hot trends for this year will be wider board floor designs and easier to install options that you simply “LOC” into place. The recent innovation in the flooring industry that continues to gain momentum with designers, builders and do it yourselfers alike is the Mercier Wood Flooring “LOC” product category. It’s an engineered floor that does not require glue or mechanical fasteners to install using a locking system optimized for low cost of production and superior installation characteristics. “This product addition presents customers with a userfriendly installation product

for multi-story developments, basements, and is an ideal choice for the do-it-yourself market,” explained Michel Collin, Marketing Director of Mercier Wood Flooring, one of North America’s leading hardwood flooring manufacturers. This innovative engineered wood flooring with a 2G LOC features a 2mm sawn veneer of hardwood in either red oak or hard maple bonded to an HDF core. Solid wood will expand or contract with heat and moisture, whereas engineered wood flooring, because it’s made of cross banded layers of wood, offers more dimensional stability, Collin explained. In fact, for the past several years Mercier has offered its customers the widest variety of

choices in the country allowing them to design their floor the way they want, thanks to their exclusive Design+ program. This year to answer the consumer demand for wider board designs, Mercier’s has added a 5” option to its LOC category in classic Red Oak and Hard Maple. According to designer Nancy Soccio of Dolce Design in Montreal, consumers will appreciate these classic hardwoods made available in the popular wider options. “Red oak is a classic choice. It’s a hardy, noble wood that adds soothing warmth to your home with its pink highlights. While hard maple is more pale and uniform,” she added. “It’s dense, finely grained look combines harmony and well-

being to any decor.” There are also established trends in wood flooring fashion that will continue to forge ahead, according to Collin, and

these are the movements towards pronounced colour variations and rare exotic species. “Our exclusive line of exotic species from South America,

for example, is sought after by discerning homeowners for its stylish rich natural shades blended with the inherent hardness and durability of exotic woods.”

What To Do When the Power Goes Out This Winter Winter might be a wonderland to some, but for those who prefer a warm, sandy beach over a ski slope, winter is no walk in the park. It’s even worse when a winter storm hits and suddenly everything goes dark. Power outages are impossible to predict. The drywall in many homes across North America could be making residents very ill and even damaging valuable appliances throughout the home. The culprit drywall was likely made in China and in many cases leaches harmful chemical contaminants into the air. Chinese-made drywall tests have shown the building product emits sulfur gases that corrode copper coils and electrical and plumbing components. The situation has caused legal action and mass panic among homeowners in many states across North America. It has also reignited inquiries into safety regulations placed on items manufactured in China and then imported into North America. The harmful drywall from China was largely used in the southern areas of the U.S. due to the housing boom that followed damaging hurricanes. Chinese drywall was used as a

an alternative when U.S.-made drywall was in short supply. Homes remodeled or built between 2001-2007 could be contaminated with such drywall. The drywall is causing the leaching of toxic sulfur gases, which mix with the humidity in the home and cause corrosion of metal items and electrical components. The sulfur gas also causes a foul, “rotten egg” smell to be present in the home. It can even become trapped in linens and clothing. Apart from the damaged components of the home, which pose a fire risk and substantial financial investments for replacement, the biggest concern with Chinese drywall is that it may cause health problems. Among the most common health concerns resulting from the drywall are upper respiratory issues, such as coughing, sneezing, bloody noses, sleep apnea, and sore throats.

The Florida Health Department, which is investigating whether the drywall poses any health risks, said it has received more than 140 homeowner complaints. Estimates suggest Chinese drywall has been used in tens of thousands of U.S. homes, and even in Canada and Australia. It remains a mystery as to which materials in the Chinese drywall are triggering the release of sulfur gases. Some experts also question whether the Chinese drywall is, in fact, a health hazard. But according to Dr. Patricia Williams, a University of New Orleans toxicologist, highly toxic compounds have been found in Chinese drywall and prolonged exposure to these compounds can cause serious health concerns. Strontium sulfide may affect bone growth and is potentially dangerous to developing children. Chronic exposure to these gases may

affect the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, eyes, kidneys, liver, and skin. Infants, children and the elderly may be especially vulnerable to these gases and the particles that are released from the drywall.

So, what can the gardener do in February to get ready for the season ahead? This is the time for planning and buying seeds, but it’s too early to start growing them. Well, there is one garden plant that wants to get started now for spring planting; tuberous begonias. Tuberous begonias are a wonderful flowering plant for folks with shady areas that could benefit from some flowering color that will last right up until first frost. As the name implies, these begonias grow from tubers rather than seeds or cuttings like other begonias. They sport showy flowers that come in a wide range of sizes and colors. There are even hanging varieties. Besides being a great choice for planting directly in soil, many varieties of tuberous begonias are happy to grow in containers that you can place about your shady patio or balcony. Since tuberous begonias are slow to start, it’s best to start them indoors during February through mid-March. It’s also a great winter activity for the desperate northeastern gardener who’s yearning for the feel and smell of soil and the sight of something…anything that’s growing. To make a good show in the garden, you’ll want to start several begonia tubers. The best way to do this is to start them in a shallow 11” by 22” seed tray. First, fill the tray with a good STERILE potting mix that’s high in peat content. You should be able to start ten or so tubers in a single tray. When you’re picking out your tubers at the garden center, pick out the largest ones. You’ll notice that the lumpy round tubers are domed on one side and slightly dished on the other. The dished side of the tuber is the top. Starting them is a snap. Simply nestle each tuber, dished side up, into your soil-filled tray just level with the surface of the soil. You can just cover the top of the tuber but not with more than a quarter of an inch of soil. Moisten the soil with room temperature water. If the tray you’re using has no holes for drainage, be careful. Begonias will rot easily if kept too moist so take it easy. The soil wants to be just lightly moist, not soggy wet. It’s best to use a tray with holes so that excess water will drain away. Nesting a tray without holes below the tray with drainage holes prevents damage to wood surfaces and allows you to remove excess water in case you overdo it. After the initial watering, you shouldn’t water again until you see signs of growth or the soil is actually dry. You can cover your tuber-filled tray with newspaper or a plastic sheet to hold in humidity to speed up sprouting, but remove it immediately at the first sign of growth. Depending on the variety you’ve chosen, sprouts will appear from one to five week after planting and watering. Once the first shoots appear, make sure that you keep the soil from drying out; still avoiding sogginess since begonia tubers can rot easily if kept too moist. After five or six leaves have developed, it’s time to transplant them into larger pots. If you plan on growing them in containers all summer, this would be the time to plant them into their “display pots”. They’ll need lots of bright light but no direct sunlight. You can speed them along with HALF strength balanced (20-20-20) liquid or soluble plant food every two weeks (no, more isn’t better). Once ALL danger of frost has passed in spring (late May to you), you can transplant them into their summer bed. I like to cover mine for a few days with horticultural fabric to allow them to get used to outdoor light after growing indoors. Remember, they prefer shade so make sure they don’t get direct sunlight. An hour of the day’s first rays won’t hurt them but avoid any afternoon sun completely. Now all they need is a little liquid plant food every couple of weeks and regular removal of spent flowers and they’ll just go and go. Since begonia tubers are quite tender, you’ll want to lift them from the soil immediately after the first frost nips them in fall. There’s no sin in taking them out a bit before frost gets them. Better safe than sorry. Snip off all the stems and place the tubers on a sheet of newspaper to dry. Brush off any loose soil and dust them with a good bulb dust to help prevent mold. Place them into a shoebox of sterile potting soil for winter storage. Store them in a cool place that won’t freeze. Get them out next February and start all over again. If you never have, give tuberous begonias a try. They’re easy to start and you’ll have fun playing in the dirt as we wait for the frozen world outside to thaw. Thanks for the read.

EYES ON HEALTH by Lawrence Cusma, OD 9 Gleason Road Scotia, NY 12302 What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that prevents your body from making or using insulin to break down sugar in your bloodstream.

How does diabetes affect the eye?

Diabetes and its complications can affect many parts of the eye. Diabetes can cause changes in nearsightedness, farsightedness and premature presbyopia (the inability to focus on close objects with age). It can result in cataracts, glaucoma, strabismus (a lack of eye alignment) and decreased corneal sensitivity. Visual symptoms of diabetes include Àuctuating or blurring of vision, occasional double vision, night vision problems and Àashes and Àoaters within the eyes. Sometimes early signs of diabetes are detected in a thorough optometric examination. The most serious eye problem associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when there is a weakening or swelling of the tiny blood vessels in the retina of your eye, resulting in blood leakage, the growth of new blood vessels and other changes. If diabetic retinopathy is left untreated, blindness can result.

Basic Foods was created 35+ years ago by 3 women who were interested in providing additive, preservative and chemical-free foods for their families and the community. Two of the women’s husbands had job changes and they had to move away. I, Norma Rice, bought their shares and have been operating the store ever since. My background is in Biochem and I have a BS, MT and did masters work in Science Education. Over the years I have taught classes in nutrition and cooking, and given lectures. I am married and have 3 children and 6 grandchildren. My hobbies are traveling, reading, cooking for my friends and family and being a grandma. Along the way, I’ve hired many wonderful women to help me run the store. Sandy Rohrmeier, Eileen Curwen and Donna Profeta are my current crew. They keep the shelves stocked and provide the service my customers expect. Along with a wide selection of foods, supplements, books and beauty aids, Basic Foods sports a large selection of Gluten-Free foods. Stop in to see us. We are here to serve you!
