“Reading a Quilt”

BALLSTON SPA – The Saratoga County Historical Society is very excited to announce an upcoming program “Reading a Quilt.” Do you have a quilt stored away that you wish you knew more about? Did you find one at an antique shop that you couldn’t resist, but wonder about when it was made? Join the Capital Region Quilt Study Group as they share their knowledge of historic quilts and the techniques used to discover their stories. Participants are welcome to bring a quilt to learn more about or are welcome to attend and observe what others have brought with them. This program will be held on Sunday, April 29, 1-3pm at Brookside Museum and will be in a roundtable discussion format, as many members will have insights to share. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about appropriate options for storing and cleaning quilts. While monetary appraisals will not be available during this program, information will be offered about how to find an experienced textile appraiser. This program is free to the public, but donations are gratefully accepted. Brookside is located at 6 Charlton Street in Ballston Spa. (P)

Greet Guests With a Touch of Glass (MS) -- The trend of using decorative glass to create dramatic entryways continues to grow as homeowners choose to stay in their homes longer and remodel for extended personal enjoyment. Adding a "touch of glass" with a new front entry door can be one of the most effective and economical ways to enhance a home's curb appeal.

Beyond aesthetics, a new entry with decorative glass can add value to the home. According to a national home valuation study conducted by Therma-Tru® and TNS, an independent research organization, simply installing a new entryway door has been shown to increase the perceived value of a home by more than $24,000 on average. Manufacturers offer a wide array of choices for entryways incorporating decorative glass doorlites, sidelites and transoms. These choices allow homeowners to create a custom look for the home while making a statement about the homeowner's personal sense of style. The recently-introduced Avonlea™ and Maple Park™ decorative glass options from Therma-Tru (available at www.thermatru. com) are perfect examples of the beauty decorative glass can add to the home. With its fluid lines and free flowing leaf pattern, the Avonlea glass package is inspired by nature and features bronze water and clear baroque glass with black nickel caming. The Maple Park decorative glass option creates a peaceful, comforting design element for the home. Decorative Avonlea glass in an energy-efcient berglass With its water and granite glass married with entryway. clear bevels and a soft arc, the Maple Park glass creates a Craftsman-inspired look, well suited for all types of homes. Entryway systems that incorporate decorative glass also offer the added benefit of allowing more sunlight into the home without energy loss, making for a more attractive, more energy-efficient interior. Some of the most stunning designs are available in impact-rated versions that provide

HOME IMPROVEMENT THE #1 MAILED HOME IMPROVEMENT GUIDE

Spring 2012 Are Tankless Water Heaters For You?

Thirty percent of a home's energy budget goes to heating water for cleaning and bathing. Some homeowners are looking to new and efficient tankless water heaters as an option on saving money on water heating costs and saving space around the house, as tankless heaters are much smaller than traditional water heaters. Consumer Reports found that while tankless heaters that use high-powered burners to heat water as it flows through the unit to provide hot water on demand are 22 percent more efficient than gas-fired hot water tanks, there are some pitfalls as well. Tankless heaters tend to be more expensive than traditional water heaters, so it could take several years for the average homeowner to recoup his costs in terms of energy savings. Also, inconsistent water temperature is a frequent complaint among testers of tankless products. The hot water does not come instantaneously, and much like standard water heaters, if there is residual cold water in the pipes, this will have to be forced through first before the hot water arrives. Because many tankless water heaters work with electric controls, in the event of a power outage, hot water could be lost for the duration of the outage.

Simple Ways To Soundproof A Home Advancements in technology have made it easier than ever before for homeowners to create a mini movie theater in the comfort of their own homes. The affordability of home-theater systems and big-screen televisions, once deemed a luxury only available to the super-wealthy, has made it possible for everyone to enjoy theater-style entertainment at home. But one thing that can put a damper on those home-theater plans is external noise. Movie theaters are soundproof so customers can't hear noise from the nearby freeway or their fellow moviegoers "oohing" and "aahing" in the theater next door. Private homes, however, are not so soundproof, so homeowners must take it upon themselves to soundproof their homes to create the ultimate home-theater experience. The following are some of the ways homeowners can do just that. * Add some layers of drywall. An extra layer or two of drywall will block sound coming from neighboring rooms. Simply add a layer or two of drywall to the existing wall. * Install double-paned windows. If it's noise from outside the home that's ruining your home theater experience, then consider installing double-paned windows with acrylic frames. Such a

job can be costly, so if it's going to be a budget-buster, then sound-deadening drapes are a cheaper alternative that can also be effective.

* Decorate the home with sound-absorbent items. Another way to soundproof a home is to decorate the house with sound-absorbent items. Furnishings with substantial cushioning, carpeting and fabric on the walls will each absorb sound, reducing the transfer of sound from room to room. Upstairs rooms should be carpeted to further reduce the transfer of sound.

* Install soundproofing tile on ceilings. Soundproofing tile on ceilings is another effective way to reduce the transference of sound from room to room and keep external noise out of the hometheater room.

Quick And Easy Ways To Update Your Kitchen (StatePoint) For many families, the kitchen is the most important room in the house, topping the list of rooms where they gather most. And it’s almost always the busiest room when entertaining friends. But if your kitchen is outmoded or looking just plain drab, some easy, cost-efficient updates can make it more inviting, without undertaking a major remodeling job. Walls Wallpaper styles come and go. And if your walls were papered more than a few years ago, you are probably living with a design that’s no longer in fashion. For a timeless look, strip the dated wallpaper and replace it with a bright new coat of paint. Be sure to choose a color that nicely complements the floors, countertops and cabinets. For a modern take on wallpaper, look for mosaic tile collections that showcase beautiful tiles and patterns, providing texture for any wall in your home. For example, Trend USA offers patterns ideally suited to give tired accent walls a fresh twist. Countertops Inconvenience is a major factor with a full kitchen remodel. But you can update the overall appearance of the kitchen by redoing just the countertops. For example, Granite Transformations, a kitchen and bathroom remodeling company, can transform a kitchen in one day by replacing your countertops with heat, cold and scratch resistant glass or granite. For an even more elegant look, consider opting for mosaic tiles, inspired by traditional Italian glass mosaics. If you’re nervous about making such a drastic change, fear not, new technologies are making it easier for consumers to visualize potential refurbishments. A new iPad application, iGRANITE, for instance, allows users to upload a snapshot of their space, and change the colors and textures of every surface of the room. More details about downloading the app can be found at www.granitetransformations.com . Appliances When is the last time you replaced your kitchen appliances? time to evaluate if your products are really doing the job.

Replacing major appliances like stoves and refrigerators might sound like an expensive prospect, but outdated products are not always as energy-efficient as newer models. Swapping these items will not only give your kitchen a sleek new look, they might also save you money on utilities in the long run.

According to real estate experts, kitchen updates offer homeowners the highest return on investment than any other home improvement job. So whether you’re planning to sell your home, or simply bring it into the 21st century, you’d be wise to start with the kitchen.

Lead Paint Hazards And Older Windows (MS) -- If your home was built before 1978 and you still have the original windows, it's time to seriously consider replacing your windows -- especially if you have young children or a pregnant person living at home. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the routine opening and closing of windows in homes built prior to 1978 can disturb lead-based paint around the windows, causing paint dust and chips to be released into the air. These lead particles are so potentially dangerous that the EPA now requires contractors to be trained and certified before they can perform any renovation, repair or painting projects that may have previously applied lead-based paint. "Research indicates that the everyday activity of opening and closing windows creates friction that then allows invisible lead dust to enter the air," says Rick Nevin, a consultant to the National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH). "Young children, who crawl on the floor where the lead dust has settled, can be especially at risk. Toddlers put their hands in their mouths ... and after playing on the floor near a window, they can easily transfer the lead dust into their mouths. The ingested lead travels through the bloodstream to a child's developing brain, causing many types of neurobehavioral damage."

According to Nevin, one of the most important long-term investments a homeowner can make for the overall safety of a family is to replace older windows, using the EPA-approved lead safe renovation guidelines. "Replacing older windows is one of the best ways to reduce lead risks," says Nevin. "Make sure to use only a contractor that is certified in lead-safe work practices and strongly consider the use of ENERGY STAR® qualified windows, like the vinyl replacement windows offered by Simonton Windows®. These windows are a healthy choice for replacing older single-pane units. They're energy-efficient and a good value for the investment."

bilize any significantly deteriorated paint. Third, perform specialized cleaning to remove any lead-contaminated dust. And finally, perform dust wipe tests to confirm the absence of lead dust hazards after the clean up."

"At Simonton, we advocate that replacing older windows coated with lead-based paint with vinyl windows is a sensible step for homeowners who want to create a healthier home environment," says Gary Pember with Simonton Windows. "We believe Rick's research substantiates the replacement of all windows coated with lead-based paint as a way to dramatically help reduce lead dust within that home." Nevin explains that, according to his research funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), homeowners need to understand there are four key steps to completing a "lead-safe window replacement strategy" for the home. "First, they advise replacing all single-pane windows with ENERGY STAR qualified windows," says Nevin. "Second, sta-
