RENSS., COLUMBIA, GREENE CO. ODYSSEY OF THE MIND TEAMS ADVANCE Fourteen student teams from schools in Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene Counties will be advancing from the regional Odyssey of the Mind tournament to the state competition in Binghamton March 26. They were selected from some 72 teams competing in the Region Four Odyssey of the Mind Tournament sponsored by Questar III in the Rensselaer City School District on March 12.

Troy High School students, competing for the first time, won first place in two of the contests. Winning teams were also selected from Averill Park, Brunswick, Catskill, Coxsackie-Athens, Ichabod Crane, Wynantskill and St. Mary’s of Hoosick Falls.

Since 1978, Odyssey of the Mind has been an international educational program where students apply their imagination and ingenuity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.

The winners by contest and age group (Division I, Grades 3-5; Division II, Grades 6-8, Division III, Grades 9-12) are as follows: Problem 1: Extreme Mousemobiles - This problem requires teams to design, build, and run vehicles that use mousetraps as their only source of energy.

West Sand Lake Elementary School – Division I; Troy High School – Division III Problem 2: As Good as Gold...berg - Teams will present an uncomplicated existing item that is used in a simple and effective way to complete a real life task.

Tamarac Elementary School – Division I; St. Mary’s Academy of Hoosick Falls – Division II; Catskill High School – Division III Problem 3: Le Tour Guide - Teams will create and present an original performance where a classical character acts as a Tour Guide.

Martin Van Buren Elementary School – Division I; Coxsackie-Athens Middle School – Division II; Troy High School – Division III; Averill Park High School Team A – Division III Problem 4: Unhinged Structure - The problem is to design and build a solution using only balsa wood and glue that folds into the team’s structure without coming apart.

SPECIAL STORY TIME FOR GENET FIRST GRADER Genet Elementary student Sarah Pettis and her first grade class were treated to a special story time when Sarah’s father made a guest “appearance� to the class in February. Sarah’s dad, Sgt. Brandon Pettis, is serving overseas in Kuwait. Sgt. Pettis contacted Sarah’s teacher, David Greene, and asked if he could provide Sarah and her class with a video of him reading a story. Mr. Greene agreed and Pettis recorded a DVD of himself reading “The Little Engine That Could.� Sarah anxiously awaited its arrival, but months passed and no video arrived. Finally, on February 14, a package marked “USO� showed up in Mr. Greene’s classroom. It was the video, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Greene played the DVD for Sarah and the class, who eagerly watched as Sgt. Pettis appeared on the screen and began reading. “A little steam engine had a long train of cars to pull...� “All the kids eyes were glued to the video,� said Greene. “They hear Mr. Greene read all the time, but to hear a soldier read was a totally different story.�

Sgt. Pettis took advantage of the USO supported United Through Reading Military Program to create and send his video. Included was a copy of “The Little Engine That Could� for Sarah to take home with the video. The program provided the DVD, book, recording equipment and shipping free of charge. �Sarah was proud of her dad and pleased to see him,� added Greene. Despite being stationed overseas, Greene says Pettis has remained active in his daughter’s education. Greene helps parents like Pettis stay informed on their children’s learning through emails and regular updates to a webpage Greene maintains on the school’s website. He also publishes an online newsletter for parents called the “Green Gazette�. Greene says having information about his classroom activities available online has proven valuable for parents, especially those living apart from their children. “It gives everybody access to what their children are learning, whether they are across the country, across the world, or across the street,� he said.

TOWN BOARD TO APPOINT AMBULANCE COMMISSIONERS In response to an audit of the East Greenbush ambulance district, which was conducted last year by the State Comptroller, the East Greenbush town board recently approved and submitted to the State Comptroller a Corrective Action Plan that includes, among other things, the appointment of ambulance commissioners. Such ambulance commissioners would be responsible for day-to-day administration of the ambulance district, as well as advising the town board on policy development and other discretionary issues related to the operation of the ambulance district, including the district’s contract for ambulance and emergency-medical service with W. F. Bruen Emergency Squad, Inc. Any East Greenbush resident who has a background in the delivery of ambulance and/or emergency-medical service and is interested in serving as an ambulance commissioner, is urged to contact me at: rmatters@eastgreenbush.org; please include a resume.

Other highlights of the Corrective Action Plan include: 1. Retention of outside council to advise the town board on all legal matters related to the administration of the ambulance district; 2. Retention of an outside consultant to advise the town board on the provision of ambulance and emergency-medical services as it relates to periodic contract negotiation with Bruen; and 3. Conducting an annual, independent audit of the ambulance district’s finances.

Town Comptroller Jim Breig did an outstanding job in advising the town board of the State Comptroller’s audit findings, and ensuring that they were properly addressed in the town’s Corrective Action Plan in a timely manner. ~Rick Matters, East Greenbush Town Councilman

TIMING IS EVERYTHING Letter to the Editor: Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Averill Park strikes again. Mere moments after eliminating the decades-old childcare program, a resource THOUSANDS of parents and children have utilized and supported through the years, the District Administration proposes the restoration of the single administrative position subject to elimination as a Level 1 reinstatement! Add an assistant superintendent position back before the French program, elementary teachers, librarians, Social Studies and Math teachers in the High School and extracurricular activities? Before keeping the buildings and grounds available for use by the community, aka TAXPAYERS‌community groups who pay for using the District facilities? Then have the unmitigated gall to stick their hands out for another $700,000 for 10 new buses because they have 100,000 miles on some? As ridiculous as it sounds, if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it.

Thank goodness the Board deferred that until the fall. Talk about being out of touch with the community AND reality!

As the leaders of this school district, the top priority MUST be what benefits our children the most with the resources available, not 2% or 5% or 11% additional tax dollars. Don’t preach about programs and our kids in one breath and in the next, add in an administrator and 10 new school buses! Is it REALLY all about the kids with the current administration? SL KIWANIS OFFER FREE CONCERT WITH “THE DISSIPATED EIGHT”

The Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake is once again pleased to announce its sponsorship of the Middlebury College a-cappella recording group “The Dissipated Eight.” The all-male, collegiate singing group will appear in concert at Averill Park High School on Friday, April 8, 2011. The two-time national award winning octet will be performing free of charge in the high school auditorium from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m.

The D8 won the highest Contemporary A-Cappella Recording Award (CARA) for their albums Clapping Joes and Eights. “The Dissipated Eight” has produced ten albums in just over ten years. The singing group celebrates 50+ years of outstanding a-cappella tradition.

In sponsoring the collegiate a-cappella singing group yet again, Kiwanis Club President Jerry Tysiak said, “Our club is committed to providing quality entertainment to our community and the Dissipated Eight always gives their all in their concerts. We are sure that this year’s free concert will not disappoint.”

Members of the East Greenbush Town Board unanimously passed a resolution commending Supervisor Rick McCabe for his selection as Honoree by the Boys and Girls Club “Wild West” is the theme of this year’s Cash for Kids Auction that benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Rensselaer County. This annual event is scheduled for Saturday, April 2, at the “Clubhouse”, 544 Broadway, Rensselaer, and begins at 6:00 pm.

During the dinner portion of the evening, The J. Donald Leahey Commitment to Youth Award will be presented. The recipient this year will be Rick McCabe. Mr. McCabe, the Town Supervisor in East Greenbush, is being recognized for making a Commitment to Youth throughout his long career of teaching, coaching, and public service.

THANK YOU TO THE HEROES OF WYNANTSKILL UFSD Letter to the Editor: I attended the Wynantskill Board of Education meeting at Gardner-Dickinson on March 17. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, “Liberty and Justice for all”, a large group of Kindergarten parents wanted “Justice”. They asked to have the public comments, last on the agenda, moved up so they could get home to their children. These parents were looking for answers, why their beloved Kindergarten teacher was not in school, they demanded to know where she was for two weeks. What happened to her? Why wasn’t a letter sent home telling parents what happened. The Kindergarten children were devastated (they had substitute teachers, but they wanted their beloved teacher). The rumors were the teacher was sick the first week, second week rumors the teacher had cancer, she was terminally ill, she was in the hospital, one little girl was writing her teacher get well cards not knowing that her teacher wasn’t sick at all. Parents and children continued to be upset, some not wanting to return to school, plus their classroom was changed around which they did not like. Parents certainly deserved answers. The superintendent seemed to talk in circles while her lawyer, secretary and the Board of Education took notes. It was evident to me the superintendent was on the hot seat big time; too many unanswered questions coming from every parent. These young parents (heroes of education), which the school district and community should be proud of, continued on with questions, never letting up on the reason they were there. They did not get their answers. They conducted themselves in a mature, professional matter. What kind of support did the teacher get from the school’s administration, didn’t sound like any with the unanswered questions. We need more “heroes of education” like this group of intelligent, strong believers who know what’s right and what’s wrong. I congratulate these fine parents for speaking their minds and protecting their children and their teacher. As one parent said, not once but twice, “the administration really dropped the ball on this one”! ARMY RESERVE SGT. ZDUNCZYK RETURNING TO U.S. AFTER DEPLOYMENT Greetings and best wishes to everyone in the City of Rensselaer.

As Rensselaer’s representative to the County Legislature, I am happy to report to you on the actions taken by the Rensselaer County Legislature at our March 8, 2011 meeting.

Along with the meeting, I joined several dozen residents on March 14 at a public hearing regarding a proposed asphalt production plant at the Port of Rensselaer. Residents had concerns regarding noise, traffic and emissions from the site and expressed their feelings to city residents. I have also expressed my concerns regarding the proposed asphalt plant, and the potential impacts on nearby neighborhoods. In particular, the potential impacts on the Fort Crailo neighborhood and areas in East Greenbush would be considerable.

The city should ensure that all residents have the opportunity to make comments on this proposed project. I believe further public meetings on the topic would be useful and want to help ensure a complete review of all issues brought forward by residents related to the project.

At the March 8 meeting, County Executive Kathleen Jimino delivered her annual State of the County address. The County Executive detailed her concerns with rising state and federal mandates and the ongoing efforts to reform mandates. The Legislature adopted a new series of resolutions, including one calling for the federal government to allow counties to choose which non-mandated Medicaid services can be provided.

The Legislature has worked hard to reduce costs in recognition of the tough economic times. The Legislature supervised a rebid of the county insurance contract, which will save the county $900,000 over the next three years. There was also a savings in the legislative offices, totaling $130,000 in 2010 and $160,000 in 2009.

The recent increases in gasoline prices have hurt working families and small businesses. We asked the State Attorney General to review the recent increases in gasoline prices and take steps to protect residents. Such reviews can make a difference in protecting against future price increases, especially as we approach the busy summer vacation months.

Army Reserve Sgt. Stephen J. Zdunczyk is returning to the U.S. after a deployment to Iraq serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn, or Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and the Southwest Asia Theater of Operations.

The soldiers return to Joint Base Dix-McGuire-Lakehurst, N.J., for debriefing, evaluations and out-processing procedures before returning to their regularly assigned Army Reserve or National Guard units. While deployed, Zdunczyk was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal. The sergeant, a company intelligence supervisor with five years of military service, is regularly assigned to the 770th Engineer Company, based out of Penn Yan, N.J. Zdunczyk graduated in 1986 from Columbia High School, East Greenbush, N.Y., and received a bachelor’s degree in 1990 from the State University of New York College at Brockport. He earned a master’s degree in 2005 from Roberts Wesleyan College, Rochester, N.Y.

The Town Board hired Tony Germano as part-time Comptroller.

He has extensive experience in town government including a stint as Town Manager of Glenville. The transition has been smooth as he rolls up his sleeves and continues the work of bringing town financial records fully up-to-date.

The Brookside Avenue meeting provided residents with a comprehensive view of what will be done there. The bridge will be widened and there will be sidewalks on both sides of it. There will also be a sidewalk on the St. Jude’s side of Brookside extending from Whiteview Avenue to Main Avenue. There were many concerns expressed, especially relating to driveway access immediately around the bridge. The engineers explained that they will work with affected residents to ensure safe access. They also indicated that they will have to “rent” some of their property during the time of construction so that they can maneuver easily and park vehicles. They assured the residents that the property would be returned to its original state or better and that they will pay rent for its use. The one surprising outcome is that unless working through Government red tape approvals is quicker than expected, construction will be next spring not this one. The good news is that the State has kicked in additional financial aid, in addition to the Federal aid, leaving the town with only a 5% match on all phases.

NYISO has moved into the Phoenix Life building and is moving forward with expansion of the facilities. They are the people who control the electrical grid for the State. We are pleased they decided to move to our community.

I hope that you will attend Board meetings the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month. Please check the website, www.townofng.com a day or so before to confirm there is a meeting scheduled and to see the agenda. Your input is invaluable and your understanding of the workings of the town is important for good governance.

AP SCHOOL TAXES…WHAT NEXT? Letter to the Editor: At recent school board meetings, we have heard from dozens of teachers and students who are telling us what we already know. We have great schools, dedicated teachers and talented children. The problem is math.

The state will continue to cut education aid to achieve “sustainable levels”. Our governor like many others does not believe our state can afford to fund schools at our current levels, so they are pulling back through Gap Elimination Adjustments; which if passed in the current budget, will continue for years to come. Right now, the governor has already proposed cuts for the 2012-2013 school years, which could mean another $3.5 million out of our budget on top of the $4.7 million for next year. What that would mean is that next March, we will be right where we are now; because a 2% property tax cap will add less that $600,000 to the budget which is hardly enough to offset millions in cuts. Meanwhile, our personnel and benefit costs continue to rise. Salaries, benefits and pensions make up 80% of the school budget, sadly staff reductions are inevitable. The math cannot and will not add up.

We have spent too much and we are now paying for it.

It’s no longer a revenue problem. It’s a spending problem. We need to find a way to make a $55 million budget work. We need to make fair and equitable cuts across all lines and departments.

Any discretionary spending and overtime needs to stop immediately. We need to stop the partisan bickering and work together to get spending under control. WATER DISTRICT BENEFIT UNIT REVIEW BOARD MEETING The Poestenkill Water District Benefit Unit Review Board established by Section 704 of the 2010 Poestenkill Municipal Water Use Law has scheduled a session for April 7, 2011 at 7 PM at the Poestenkill Town Hall for the purpose of hearing challenges to the number of benefit units that have been assigned to individual properties.

Water District Property owners who believe they were assigned the incorrect number of benefit units for the 2011 Tax Year should submit a letter to the Board prior to the close of business April 5, 2011 along with any supporting documentation that they may have. Property owners may appear in person during the meeting to answer any questions the Board may have or trust that they have submitted sufficient information. If insufficient information has been submitted, the Board will request additional information prior to making a decision.

The decision will be provided to the Town Board who will authorize the appropriate action which may include a refund of the benefit unit charge or portion thereof. 2011 SPRING

In an effort to recognize outstanding achievements of our students, Maple Hill High School presents each month a Student of the Month Award. Students may be nominated for this award by any staff member, a representative of a community organization, a parent or another student. Students may be nominated for a single outstanding achievement, for service to the school or community or for significant improvement in school. Each month one student in each grade, 9-12, is selected for this award by a faculty committee after a review of all nominations. For the month of March, 2011, the students selected to receive this recognition are: Freshman – Lee Soja, Sophomore – Jesse Bonin, Junior – Aubrey Racz, Senior – Sierra Legge.

Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Soja, is nominated for being a hard working, polite student. Lee enjoys 80 minute classes with Earth Science being his favorite. He is a member of the soccer team and participates in Ski Club. Lee enjoys playing sports and plans to attend college.

Jesse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Bonin, is nominated for being a polite, respectful, hard working student. He is a member of the Editorial Staff for the yearbook, and also works with the Newspaper Club. Jesse is involved in 4H, Dairy Bowl, and often does public presentations through 4H at the county level. Jesse is interested in Veterinary Science and working with animals in the future.

Aubrey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Racz, is nominated for embodying the spirit of Maple Hill. She strives to do her best in all of her classes. Aubrey is a member of the soccer team, basketball team (2nd team Patroon Conference All-Star), Band, SADD, International Club, Student Council, and is president of the Junior class. Outside of school Aubrey plays Rugby.

Sierra, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Legge, is nominated for being a hard worker with a great attitude. Sierra is a member of Chorus and Band along with the soccer team, basketball team, softball team, (1st team Patroon Conference All-Star for soccer and basketball). Outside of school she plays for the Miracle League. Sierra would like to be a Veterinary Technician in the future.

By Morgan McEvilly All Warrior fans welcome. Our spring season is well underway and the athletes are working very hard to make this season a memorable one. The teams are all very excited to get to play their first games of the season.

Today your Averill Park lacrosse team has their first game of the season; which also is their first home game. The girls will be taking on Colonie High School at 4:15. Please come and show your support for this season opener.

The track meet that was scheduled for yesterday, 3/30, will be rescheduled for 4/4. The meet will be away at Guilderland High School at 4pm; come and root on your track team!

The baseball team will have their first home game against Bishop Maginn High School tomorrow. This will be a great game; come early and get your seat, it will start at 4pm. Let’s go boys!

The tennis team will be traveling to Saratoga Springs for a challenging match up. The boys have been working very hard and will fight through every match. They will begin playing at 4:15, come watch and cheer them on! Go Warriors!

Tennis all star, Bo Cardish is this week’s scholar athlete. Bo has been playing on the boy’s varsity tennis team since he was a sophomore. Bo was 4th singles two years ago and then moved up to 2nd singles last year. The team has not decided positions yet, but hopefully Cardish will reach number 1 this year. Aside from tennis, Bo enjoys playing Frisbee, Skiing, Ping-Pong, playing the valve trombone, and playing video games. In his busy schedule, Cardish manages to spend time with his friends and maintain a 96.02 grade point average. This year Bo is taking courses such as: PIG/Economics, Wind Ensemble, Physics, Detective Literature, Cinema and Literature, Calculus, Jazz Band and Spanish 5. Bo has been accepted to Marist, RIT, and SUNY Brockport. Next year Bo will be studying Biology and hopefully furthering his tennis career. Bo’s favorite part about tennis is getting outside on a nice spring day and rallying with friends. “My many friends, teachers, coaches, and my parents have all contributed in inspiring me to strive for excellence in all that I do.”

GREENBUSH SEA LIONS JOIN IN THE SWIM AT YMCA STATES! The Greenbush YMCA Sea Lions Swim Team recently returned from the YMCA New York State Championships held at the Nassau Aquatics Center on Long Island after achieving more post-season success.

The Sea Lions competed against more than 1400 swimmers from 40 different YMCA locations across the state—setting 14 new team records and finishing 24th overall with just 19 swimmers. Three Sea Lions brought home medals for top 8 finishes: Rett McNair placed 1st with a 51.75 in the Boys 13-14 100 Freestyle; Julie Ehrlich finished 2nd in the 50 Freestyle and 50 Butterfly, and 4th in the 100 Freestyle in the Girls 11-12 division; and Liv Eisenhardt placed 7th in the Girls 8-under 100 Individual Medley.

Additionally, swimmers Gabrielle Bianco, Patrick Buono, Liv Eisenhardt, Rachel Ferris, Jessica McMillen, Rett McNair, Colleen Quaglia, Derek Rossetti, and Adam Salerno all won championship ribbons for a top 16 finish in at least one individual event.

NORTHEAST COALITION BASKETBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT The College of St. Rose is hosting the Northeast Coalition Basketball League’s Championship game on March 31st, at 6:30 PM. The following schools will be competing in the tournament: Lasalle School, Berkshire Farms, Troy YMCA, Vanderheyden, and Rensselaer Boys and Girls Club.

The Northeast Coalition Basketball League is made up of several Chapter 853 schools and community programs for boys and girls ages 14-18. The league formed at the beginning of December 2010 and is ending the basketball season with a tournament. Each participant will receive a tournament t-shirt and medal with trophies for each placing team.

The league was formed to help provide behavioral incentives for the youth enrolled in Chapter 853 schools. Youth in these programs tend to suffer from low self-esteem and being involved in a school sports team has instilled a sense of pride and belonging.

Circle Theatre Players presents Sarah, Plain and Tall, the play with music for all ages, adapted from the Newbury awardwinning book by Joseph Robinette and directed by CarolLynn Langley, is presented at 8pm on April 1 & 2 and Sunday, April 3 at 2:30pm. The story of a widowed Kansas farmer with two children, who places an ad in the newspapers and who is seeking a wife. A spinster from Maine responds. “Yes, I can sing. I will come by train, I will wear a yellow bonnet, I am plain & tall” Sarah travels to Kansas for a month’s stay in order to determine whether or not she’ll make the move permanent. A gentle tale of wisdom, humor, & family.
