The Troy Public Library and Transition Troy are pleased to announce the showing of the movie “The Economics of Happiness.” “Far from the old institutions of power, people are starting to forge a very different future...” The International Society for Ecology & Culture’s documentary film about economic localization, a powerful strategy that can help heal our fractured world – our ecosystems, our societies, and our selves. (Description from www.theeconomicsof This program will be held Thursday, December 27th, at 5:30 p.m. at the Main Library. Transition Troy is a collaboration of residents committed to leading our city into and through this period of social and technological transformation. This program is free and open to the public, but please register at or 274-7071. Troy Public Library is located at 100 Second Street, Troy, NY.

Greetings to residents of the City of Troy. We are happy to provide constituents with a report on actions taken at the November 13, 2012 legislative meeting. Along with the meeting, the proposed 2013 county budget was introduced in mid-October. The budget stays within the state tax cap during difficult economic circumstances and challenges. The budget also protects needed county services, along with maintaining the fiscal foundation that earned the county a solid bond rating and positive independent audits. Legislators will continue to review the budget until early December. It is expected the budget will be considered at a special meeting on December 3. We are proud the county is complying with the state tax cap, especially given the difficult recession and since some other neighboring counties are not complying with the tax cap. Legislators approved a resolution for the distribution of revenues from the filing of mortgages in the county during a six-month period from April through September. The City of Troy will receive $243,073 from the collection. An important resolution to help create new jobs was approved by the Legislature. The pharmaceutical research company Regeneron is located in the Town of East Greenbush, which has a sewer system that is above capacity. We voted to allow Regeneron to join the county sewer district, which has service located a short distance from the company. Extending the county sewer service to Regeneron will help the company create 300 new jobs and continue to grow here in the county. The job creation and expansion of Regeneron came about thanks to partnerships on the state, county and local levels, and we are particularly excited, since the development occurs during a tough recession. The Legislature also adopted a resolution commending veterans who received medals they were owed for exemplary military service at a special breakfast ceremony on November 4. Legislators also approved a resolution commending Retired Air Force Staff Sergeant Colleen Bushnell for leading the Long Road Home Project, a bike ride through fifteen states to raise awareness for veteran’s issues. We also adopted a resolution commending Abigail Blair upon being crowned Troy High School Homecoming Queen. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday, December 11, 2012. Residents are welcome to contact us at the legislative offices by writing to the Rensselaer County Legislature, 1600 7th Avenue, Troy NY 12180 or by e-mailing us via the official legislative website at

NAMI RENSSELAER ADDS A FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP IN AVERILL PARK The worst part of having a family member with mental illness is the stigma and loneliness. If we told our family and friends that our loved one had cancer or other serious disease, they would be surrounding us with support, cooking meals, and doing anything to make our life a little easier. When we talk to others about mental illness, it is almost like we said we had a serious contagious disease. No one wants to talk about it and many times, we suffer alone. We offer a place you can talk without judgment and get some much needed support. We understand because we are peers… we all have someone who is suffering from the effects of mental illness. Nothing is taboo and we have lots of information/ brochures to share.SUPPORT IS FREE… You don’t have to “sign up” and you come and go as you need to. Please join as at either location or at both. Our newest location is The Church of the Covenant (the Round Church) on Route NY 43 in Averill Park on the Third Wednesday of each month. We meet 6:30pm to 8:00pm. We will continue to hold our bi-monthly Support Group meetings at the SUNYA School of Public Health, One University Place, Rensselaer, NY 12144 on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Again, this group meets 6:30pm to 8pm. If you would like more information on our support groups, or just need to vent prior to a meeting, please call Mary Beth at 588-6949 or Mary at 227-6701.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine defines CAM as a “group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine.” Submitted by These practices are often used as Sandra Kahlon Director of Rehabilitation, additional techniques to those used Evergreen Commons in conventional medicine. Examples of CAM practices and techniques are: massage, reiki, oil and aroma therapy, light therapy, spiritual care, and myofascial release. Using CAM in conjunction with conventional medicine can provide many benefits. CAM techniques are usually more encompassing than conventional medicine alone. They include emotional, spiritual, personal energy and physical health techniques and often focus on prevention. Many CAM techniques have been utilized for centuries and have proven very effective in many world cultures. These practices often utilize natural methods to promote healing. Natural remedies can usually supplement Western conventional health care without clashing. In some instances, these techniques can be used to reduce the number of medications being utilized, address pain or anxiety issues, rehabilitate sports injuries and aid general well-being. When considering CAM techniques and practices, the first step is to take charge of your health by becoming informed. It is important to be aware that individuals respond differently to various treatments. Health care providers should be consulted regarding the safety, effectiveness, or interactions with medications of any product or practice that you are considering.

HEALTHY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION IDEAS FOR KIDS Improving Eating Habits • You may have bad childhood memories of being forced to sit at the table until you cleaned your plate. Don’t perpetuate this method of mealtime management! It sends the wrong message by emphasizing quantity over quality and can lead to significant overeating. Foster a healthier attitude toward food by focusing on what you serve in the first place. • Establish a routine with regular meal and snack times. Always eat meals at the table. Children who eat meals with their family consume more fruits, vegetables, fiber, calciumrich foods and vitamins. • Once kids are old enough, encourage self-feeding as much as possible. • Avoid soda, which is full of empty calories or artificial sweeteners. Milk and water are the best drink choices for your child. Offer whole milk or 2 percent milk to children ages 12 months to 2 years old, unless your pediatrician recommends low-fat milk. After age 2, offer low-fat milk. Limit juice to four to six ounces a day. • Kids can be picky at first, but don’t let a refusal of a new food stop you from trying again. Offer new foods multiple times in multiple ways.

GILEAD STORY DINNERS Gilead Lutheran Church in Brunswick held yet another successful Story Dinner on November 16th! We feasted on Turkey, dressing, rolls, casseroles and salad, with a couple of delicious desserts. The stories were told by Glenn Hayner, bringing the meaning of Thanksgiving to light, and Eleanor Bode gave a heartfelt story about memorializing our Veterans! We also raised $200.00 for our local charities! Our next dinner will be on December 28th at 6PM. Meet us at our Fellowship Hall, the corner of Route 7 and Route 278 in Brunswick, to “Get a Break in the Action!” This is our attempt to get together with members of our congregation, friends, family and you. The total cost for an evening of pizza and great fellowship is a non-perishable item for Hope 7 Food Pantry and a donation to Wounded Warriors, Damien Center or Lutheran Disaster Relief. These dinners are not a story book dinner for children, but a chance for adults to get together and enjoy fellowship and to meet new friends. This is your chance to “Get a Break in the Action” of the holiday rush, kick back and enjoy friendship, and meet new friends. Please RSVP, so we have enough food and a special place for you with us at 2799270.

TIMOTHY’S On Friday, December 21st, starting at 6:30PM, the family movie, “Christmas Angel” will be presented to the community free of charge at St. Timothy’s Church, 470 Winter Street Extension, North Greenbush. Are wishes coming true because of an angel living in the old abandoned house?Every year before Christmas break, the students in Olivia Mead’s class present “My Impossible Christmas Wish” papers, but this year, something unusual is happening… the wishes are coming true. Olivia (Izabela Vidovic) takes note, because she has been wishing for a long time that her singleparent mom (Terry Polo) could find the right person, a man Olivia could call “Dad”. What Olivia discovers is a reclusive and mysterious inhabitant of the house, Elsie Waybright (Della Reese). Elsie is no angel, and she has plenty of secrets to keep, but she does have the answer to how the Christmas wishes came true. SHOWTIME IS 6:30PM AND THERE WILL BE FREE POPCORN AND SODA.
