This competition will be held December 17-29, 2013, in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Martha previously won the Under 10 - Girls category of the North American Youth Chess Championships back in August. Martha also earned the title of FIDE Woman Candidate Master. EGCC has been fundraising to help cover Martha’s expenses. They have been collecting donations and helped establish a crowd funding webpage. In addition, they hosted the Martha Samadashvili Benefit Tournament on Saturday, November 16th, at the La Salle School. The tournament had a strong turnout with 32 players participating. Brother John McManus from La Salle School volunteered to serve as the Tournament Director. Albany Mayor Gerald D. Jennings declared November 16th Martha Samadashvili Day. Martha is an exceptionally hardworking 4th grade Honor Roll student who is teaching others what can be done by working hard and keeping a commitment towards a goal. EGCC is seeking help from the community to support Martha. They encourage people who want to support her quest to go to the club’s website at www.eastgreenbushchessclub.org. There is a link on the main page where people can contribute. They can also contact Bill at 477-2820 for more information.

Healthy Pet Care Guide HOLLY AND MISTLETOE ARE SYMBOLS OF CHRISTMAS “Oh, by gosh, by golly it’s time for mistletoe and holly. Tasty pheasants, Christmas presents, countrysides covered in snow.” As exemplified by this holiday hit by Henry Sanicola, Frank Sinatra and Dok Stanford, holly and mistletoe are an integral part of holiday imagery and tradition. Holly is used to adorn a home in green and red finery alongside evergreen boughs and wreaths. In addition, it has become customary to hang a bouquet of mistletoe under which people are encouraged to share a holiday kiss. Homeowners who hang mistletoe and holly around their homes during the holiday season should be mindful of pets and youngsters around the plants. Mistletoe and holly are considered to be moderately to severely toxic, and ingesting the leaves could be dangerous. Therefore, keep these plants away from curious hands. Mistletoe is commonly hung up high, which should make it less problematic, but holly should be hung high as well.

PLEASE ADOPT ME! I’m a two year old, striking, all-black male kitty named Beethoven. I got that classic name because I would always “roll over” for tummy rubs! I have long, very soft fur and love to be petted & brushed. I know my features don’t show up well in this picture, being so black and all, but I’m a very handsome boy! Besides, black is so fashionable, I will match well with any decor! Come check me out in person and see for yourself! I’m a little shy at first, but I’m very easy going and I’ll get along well with you & other kitties, too. I would be so grateful for a forever home; would you please give this gentle kitty a chance? It would mean the world to me! As with all Purrfect Companion kitties, Beethoven is up-to-date on routine shots, house trained and neutered or spayed. For more information on Beethoven, please contact the following Purrfect Companions’ representative: Maryann at 3312221 or at email@example.com. Please use this phone number only for adoption purposes! Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. We are always looking for good volunteers to help with the kitties or assist at our adoption clinics. If you’d like to donate a little time to these worthy animals, please give us a call at 4638709. Our adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Sundays and the second Saturday of the month at Pet Supplies Plus, 1235 Western Ave in University Plaza, Albany NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties! We may have one that is just “PURRFECT” for you!

WINGS OF RESCUE TO FLY 500 DOGS TO NEW HOMES IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST Friday, December 6th, 2013, Wings of Rescue, in cooperation with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Subaru of America’s “Share the Love” event, Shelter Transport Animal Rescue Team (START)—will ensure that at least 500 dogs will leave high kill shelters to live many happy days in new forever homes. The rescue will be Wings of Rescue’s 3rd Annual Holiday Airlift, in which hundreds of animals are saved from high kill shelters in Southern California—many on the very same day the dogs are scheduled to be euthanized. A fleet of private planes flown by volunteer pilots will deliver these bundles of love to rescue organizations and new ‘furever homes’ in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. This is the largest one-day animal rescue on the West Coast. All of the animals onboard the aircrafts will fly in pressurized cabins, not as cargo. START’s participation in the transport has been made possible as a result of a grant awarded to the organization by ASCPA, which is granting a total of $100,000 to animal welfare organizations across the country. These grant funds are part of Subaru of America’s “Share the Love” event donation to the ASCPA. Subaru’s “Share the Love” event runs from November 21, 2013 until January 2, 2014 during which Subaru will donate $250 of every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased to the customer’s choice of participating charities, which includes the ASCPA. AUTHORIZED STATEMENT FROM RENSS.CO. EXEC. KATHLEEN M. JIMINO RE: Adoption of 2014 County Budget “This budget protects our taxpayers and the vital local services we provide including those to pave, plow and patrol our streets, as well as fund our senior and veterans programs, all the while meeting the overwhelming demand of the state and federally mandated expenses thrust upon us,” stated Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino. “In spite of those increased mandated costs placed on us, this collaborative effort with the County Legislature to develop a budget that falls well below the 2% tax cap is a budget I feel we can be proud of.”

NOVENA PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine This prayer must be published after the favor is granted D.A.J.

CHRISTMAS PARTY FOR CHILDREN A WARM COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT The next time you slip your hands into a cozy pair of mittens/gloves, or pull a hat on your head or a scarf on your neck on a cold morning, just imagine how sad it would be if you had to go through the winter with a cold head, neck or hands! In Rensselaer County, there will be many children who face that bleak prospect unless you lend a hand. Until December 20th, there will be a tree in the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County office with bare branches waiting to be filled with your donations of mittens, gloves, scarves, hats and socks. All sizes and colors are welcomed, either homemade or purchased. We would like to see branches hanging full of warm fuzzies. This year we will also be accepting donations of knitted newborn and preemie sweaters, booties and hat sets and new preemie clothing. So, if you are a talented knitter, show off your talent by donating items to our tree. At your next business or social meeting, why not collect mittens, hats, scarves and socks, then bring them by the basketful to our office where they will be hung. All of the mittens and hats/socks will be donated to children throughout Rensselaer County. Let’s get going and warm your heart while you warm a child’s hands and head. The Cornell Cooperative Extension office is located at 61 State street in downtown Troy - 2nd floor. Office hours are 8:30 to 4:00 Monday thru Friday. If you have more than a basket full, give us a call at 518-272-4210 and arrangements will be made to pick them up.

The Friends of Oakwood are sponsoring a special Christmas Concert that you won’t want to miss. Although it is a family-oriented singalong concert, you don’t have to bring a little tot. You can sit back and listen to the amazing acoustics in this historic national landmark, while you are entertained by the Highlight Acting Troupe and the Hoosac School Community Chorus, who will sing a variety of familiar Christmas carols. Specially decorated Christmas trees will be on display to add to the holiday atmosphere. There may even be a surprise visitor! $10/Adult, Children Free. Call 1-800-556-6273 with your name, phone, and number of adults & children.
