NAMI HEARTS AND MINDS NAMI Rensselaer County is excited to announce we are offering a new program! NAMI Hearts & Minds is designed to help educate physical wellness as an approach to mental wellness. It is medically documented that having a mental illness also decreases life longevity. Some of the blame goes to the medication side-affects but even more blame goes to life styles. When you are depressed, it often leads to a more sedentary life and you grab for the comfort foods to take away the pain. The nicotine in cigarettes can also be used to mask some of the symptoms. We know that these actions also lead to heart disease, strokes, and unfortunately, also add more mental illness symptoms. So, we are hoping to break the bonds to unhealthy living for better recovery! Please join us at the Krause Center in Troy on November 7th & 14th at 6:30 pm to learn about smoking cessation, nutrition, and exercise. There is NO CHARGE for attendees. For more information, please contact or call 588-6949.

Evergreen Commons will be taking applications for volunteers on November 2nd from 10:00am-1:00pm. Volunteers are needed evening and days for music, assist with games, 1-1 visits, nail care, and crafts. Any questions, please call Lynne at 479-4662 ext 432.

On November 2 at 10:30 am, the Rensselaer County Historical Society (RCHS), located at 57 Second Street will host filmmaker Bruce Kennedy for a viewing of his work-in-progress film Righteous Rebellion,” an examination of the Anti-Rent War that once gripped upstate New York, including parts of Rensselaer County such as the town of Greenbush. During the 19th century, 300,000 farmers remained controlled by wealthy landowners and an archaic, 200-yer old, semi-feudal form of land and social authority. As a result, without hope of ever securing the right of ownership to the lands they worked and developed, local farmers took up the cause of resistance against the 1% of their day. To tell this unique story, Mr. Kennedy has enlisted the thoughts and commentary of 30 local historians and descendants of those who participated in the rebellion, ensuring that this piece of largely forgotten history remains truly local. Rensselaer County Historian Kathryn Sheehan was interviewed for the film. As a descendant of Dr. Smith Azer Boughton, aka Big Thunder, a principal leader of the rebellion, Mr. Kennedy will also share his family’s stories and reveal new and never before offered interpretations and insights into the Anti-Rent War. Admission to this event is free and refreshments will be served. For more information, call 518-272-7232 or visit the website,

SACRED HEART COLLECTED NICKELS for RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE IN ALBANY The first and sixth grade classrooms held a nickel drive from September 26th to October 4th to benefit the Albany Ronald McDonald House. The entire collected nickels and even pennies came in jars, envelopes and baggies. The College of Saint Rose student teachers, Jessica Sears and Brittany Romano then processed the coins. Debbie Ross, Resident House Manager of The Ronald McDonald House, visited the school and accepted a check for $200. She kindly told the children about the institution’s mission and shared stories of the current families there. Several of the school families volunteer and/or have visited the Houses in Albany.

As legislative representatives of District 3, including the towns of Brunswick, Pittstown and Schaghticoke, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the October 8, 2013 legislative meeting. Along with the October legislative meeting, we are pleased to report a slight reduction in spending in the legislative budget. The reduction in the budget brings the legislative budget to a level comparable to the early 1990s, and follows other cost reductions in county government. The Legislature approved an important resolution at the October meeting that will create a savings for municipalities in the county. Under the shared services agreement, municipalities in the county will be able to obtain employee health insurance via the county’s health plan. The costs for employee health insurance have been on a sharp increase in recent years, and we are encouraged this new shared services agreement will be useful in reducing costs at the local level. A number of local elected officials and legislators have been seeking this shared services agreement, and recent rule changes make the local buy-in possible. The new shared services agreement is just the latest cost-cutting shared services agreement between the county and municipalities. We also joined with the Brunswick Sportsman’s Club for a forum on the Second Amendment at the Center Brunswick Fire House. Tom Walsh and Ken Herrington sat on a panel regarding the issue, and spoke of their efforts to protect constitutional rights to the audience of over 300. At the October 2 public forum, we were happy to host state representatives who helped residents re-register for the Basic STAR property tax exemption. Resident homeowners who currently receive the Basic STAR property tax exemption are required by the state to re-register this year to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and beyond. Registration is continuing through Dec. 31, 2013 and can be accomplished via the state website Legislators were also happy to see the opening of the new Science Center at Hudson Valley Community College. The new Science Center will improve the science and technology curriculums at the college, which is sponsored by the county. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Residents are welcome to contact us at the legislative offices by writing to the Rensselaer County Legislature, 1600 7th Avenue, Troy, NY 12180 or by e-mailing us via the official legislative website at

Achieving Balance The Brunswick Town Board is currently considering a new Comprehensive Plan. A Draft Plan was prepared by a group of our fellow citizens on the Citizens Comprehensive Plan Committee. The Draft Plan they prepared is a credible and reasonable plan. This group of citizens had a variety of members with different opinions about land use in Brunswick; The Draft Plan successfully achieves a balanced approach. In a number of places it reflects the desire of many residents to maintain the existing character of Brunswick and its neighborhoods. It also, clearly shows where and how future development should occur. Although the Plan reflects much of the residents’ intentions unless the Town Board follows the Plan— including updating the Town’s 50 year old Zoning Ordinance — it will be meaningless. The Comprehensive Plan is supposed to be the foundation of all zoning decisions and provide standards for all zoning amendments. The Comprehensive Plan can help preserve your neighborhood because changes to the zoning can be measured against the Plan, keeping the zoning in line with what people actually want. This is important because although the 2001 Comprehensive Plan (the last plan) stated that people wanted to keep Brunswick’s character and have zoning to accomplish that, we saw the Town approve major developments and zoning changes. The proposed zoning changes prompted the petition by 2,000 residents that asked the Town to halt approving piecemeal, ad hoc changes, but to review its land use policy and update the Zoning Ordinance. The Town Board’s failure to implement the 2001 Comprehensive Plan was at the center of the past controversy. If you are concerned about land use consider voting for someone new for the Town Board. The preparation of the Draft Comprehensive Plan by the Citizen’s Committee demonstrates that balancing varying opinions achieves a good result for all. In the past, the one party Town Board could not do this. Someone from a different party can act independently to ensure full debate about land use decisions. These decisions will shape our communities and how we live our lives.

ELECTION DAY LUNCHEON What is the best part of your Election Day? Could it be electing who you want to represent you for the next four years? I think the best part for me is having lunch with all my friends at Gilead Lutheran Church. They have my favorite Clam Chowder and I can get a sandwich or a hot dog and dessert. I have met many people there over the years, and now I feel that many of these people I can call my friends. I have enjoyed my meal so much that I have even taken a pint of the chowder home to have later in the week. I understand this year I can pick up a pint of chowder for $4 or $7.50 for a 30 oz. jar. For those people who are unable to get to Gilead for lunch, you may call Darlene at 279-9552 and order your chowder for pick up. Lunch is served from 11:30AM to 1:30PM. You many pick-up your jars then or between 4PM and 5:30PM. Gilead is located at the junction of RT’s 7 & 278 in Center Brunswick and is handicapped accessible. See you Election Day, November 5.
