TOUR HAUNTED LANSINGBURGH WITH THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

4-H THRILLS AND SKILLS CLUB PLANS FOR NEW YEAR

On Halloween, Wednesday, October 31st, 2012, the Lansingburgh Historical Society will present their inaugural lectures and tour of haunted Lansingburgh. We will meet at 6:30PM at the Melville House, located on the corner of 114th Street and First Avenue in Lansingburgh. The program will begin with brief presentations, along with some Q & A time, on the science of “ghost hunting” from Gary Robusto of the Tri-City NY Paranormal Society, and how to conduct historical research on how to document your neighborhood ghosts, by LHS Archivist, Warren F. Broderick. Then we will tour 5 haunted sites in central Lansingburgh by foot, involving about one mile of walking. At each site possible explanations of the spirit presences will be given, and we will conclude by attending a Halloween party at a lovely historical home that is truly haunted. There will be a $20 per person participation fee, with proceeds being used to restore a gravesite in historic Trinity churchyard. No persons under 12 years of age may attend. Reservations are required as the tour attendees will be limited to no more than 30 persons. For further information, call the Society at 235-4041 or 235-3501 (recorded message), or consult the Society’s website at http:// www.lansingburghhistoricalsociety.org/

The Brunswick based 4-H Thrills and Skills Club has completed a successful 5th year and is busy making plans for the coming year’s activities and projects. Each year, the leaders pick a theme. Last year’s theme was Recycling. The group made projects out of recycled materials including tote bags from bird seed sacks. The club also toured the County Waste Recycling Facility to learn how recyclables are sorted and processed. This year the Thrills and Skills Club has divided itself into three age groups: Elementary, Juniors and Seniors. The theme for 2012 - 2013 is Patriotism. Each age group has decided to incorporate Patriotism into their projects and field trips. The group will be touring a military facility and creating and donating charitable gifts to Veterans and active duty military personnel. Further Community service projects include baking and serving cookie platters to shelters for the holidays and serving elderly church members dinner. The senior members are involved in county-wide groups, including Teen Ambassadors, Teen Council and Teen Exchange. Each group encourages the teens to learn and practice public speaking, chair meetings and participate in fundraising activities. These activities are carried out at the county, state and interstate level. For more information about the programs Rensselaer County 4-H has to offer, contact the office at 272-4210.

“THE END of SUBURBIA: OIL DEPLETION and the COLLAPSE of the AMERICAN DREAM” The Troy Public Library and Transition Troy are pleased to announce the showing of “The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream” on Thursday, October 25th, at 5:30 p.m. at the Main Library. “Since World War II, North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness.” (Description from Amazon.com) Transition Troy is a collaboration of residents committed to leading our city into and through this period of social and technological transformation. This program is free and open to the public, but please call the library at 274-7071 to register. Troy Public Library is located at 100 Second Street, Troy, NY.

“WHAT WOULD SASQUATCH DO?” The Troy Public Library is pleased to announce the program, “What Would Sasquatch Do?” at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 10th, at the Main Library. For three centuries, people have reported seeing giant upright walking hairy beings, called Sasquatch or Bigfoot, in the forests of New York and Vermont. For the last 13 years, former Private Investigator Steve Kulls has investigated and researched sightings across North America, and has observed a pattern of known primate behavior in these creatures, which in turns assists in the validation and research of them. Join Steve as he discusses sightings, evidence, and research findings, not only from across America, but locally in New York and Vermont as well. Steve will also be discussing his book, “What Would Sasquatch Do? - Using primate behavior to validate the Bigfoot mystery,” and how he came to some of the conclusions in the book. Copies of the book will be available for sale. The program is free and open to the public, but please register in advance at 274-7071 or www.thetroylibrary.org . The library is located at 100 2nd Street, Troy.

On Brockport’s first drive of the game, Nichols carried the ball six times in an eight-play drive as the sophomore capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run to give the Golden Eagles an early 7-0 lead. Nichols scored another one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to finish off Brockport’s scoring on the day. The Golden Eagles have now won seven straight games when Nichols scores a rushing touchdown.

APPROVES COUNTY BATH SALTS LAW

FREE FAMILY MOVIE AT ST. TIMOTHY’S We Bought a Zoo is a 2 0 1 1 comedydrama film based on the 2008 memoir of the same name by Benjamin Mee. The film is directed by Cameron Crowe, and stars Matt Damon as the lead character. It tells the story of Mee and his family who just moved into a dilapidated zoo and took on the challenge of preparing the zoo for its reopening to the public. This movie is sure to please the whole family. In addition to seeing a great movie, there will be FREE popcorn and soda for everyone. Plan now to attend this special evening. Showtime is 6:30pm. St. Timothy’s is located at 470 Winter Street Extension at the intersection of Bloomingrove Ave. in North Greenbush.

Awaits State Action on Bath Salts Issue The Rensselaer County Legislature approved a county law prohibiting the sale of the potentially dangerous substance known as bath salts at the October 9 legislative meeting, Legislators Harry Tutunjian and Hank Bauer announced. Bath salts have been linked to several violent crimes and deadly incidents across the country. The county law would make it illegal for bath salts to be sold in the county by individuals, markets or even Internet companies. The two lawmakers, who represent Troy, said the new local law will expand the ability of law enforcement to combat the sale, distribution and use of the drug. Rensselaer County is the latest in a series of counties and municipalities to pass a law banning the sale of bath salts. “Bath salts have been linked to a number of dangerous incidents, and banning the sale of this substance is a common-sense move at this time,” said Legislator Harry Tutunjian. “This local law can help county law enforcement protect children and young people from being able to access this potentially harmful substance,” added Bauer. Both Tutunjian and Bauer said they would still like to see the state draft and approve a more comprehensive law banning the sale of bath salts. “An effective state law would help ensure a uniform law across the state. Having one set of standards would be helpful for law enforcement and we hope state lawmakers take this issue up again,” said Bauer. Bath salts are similar to powdered synthetic cocaine and produce an effect similar to a hallucinogenic. The white crystals bath salts resemble legal bathing and cleaning products like Epsom salts, and have packaging that attempt to avoid the prohibitions against illegal drugs. Consumption of bath salts can cause hallucinations and psychosis, and use of bath salts has also been linked to multiple suicides and violent incidents in the United States. “Local governments across New York State like Rensselaer County have taken action to stop the sale of bath salts. We recognize the danger this product poses and want to do everything in our power to protect our residents,” said Tutunjian.

Primarily dry mediums will be used including charcoal, graphite and conte. This program is free and open to the public and is made possible in part through a Community Art$Grant, a program funded by The Arts Center of the Capital Region through the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. MAMMOGRAPHY SAVES LIVES The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is urging women to get mammograms. “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a significant time to remind women to be proactive about their health and get mammograms,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, “Often women will put their own health on hold as they take care of family members; we want to send out the message that when you take care of yourself, you’re taking care of your family.” For more information and to locate an accredited mammography facility nearby, call the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at 800-877-8077. PROGRAM TO FACILITATE ENROLLMENT IN SNAP FOR RENSS. CO. RESIDENTS Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, Inc. has recently been awarded a grant to provide the Nutrition Outreach and Education Program (NOEP) to residents of Rensselaer County. This unique program offers free and confidential services to connect hungry New Yorkers with nutrition assistance programs. NOEP’s primary focus is increasing participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the new name for the Food Stamp Program. SNAP is our nation’s first line of defense against hunger; stretching the monthly food budgets of all who meet program guidelines. Historically, there are a large number of people who are potentially eligible for SNAP benefits yet are not enrolled in the program. NOEP reaches out to this population to promote the SNAP program, as well as the school breakfast and lunch and summer food service program which provides nutritious meals to school- aged children. If you are having trouble putting food on the table, your local NOEP can give you a free and confidential pre-screening to determine if you are potentially eligible. Application assistance is available free of charge. For more information, call 689-6325.

Harry Tutunjian’s leadership helped revitalize Troy and today, he works as a member of the Rensselaer County Legislature to protect taxpayers, safeguard needed services, and create new jobs. Tutunjian is seeking election as a county legislator representing Troy along with Legislator Henry Bauer. He was appointed to the Legislature after completing two successful terms as mayor, and was not able to seek re-election due to term limits. “Troy is a city of great opportunity and promise, and I want to continue working to build a better future for a city I love. I am honored to be able to serve the City of Troy as a member of the County Legislature,” said Tutunjian. During Harry’s service as mayor, more than $110 million in investment of new construction and business came to Troy, along with the creation of 1,100 new jobs. New businesses including a Hilton Garden Inn and Recovery Room, Dinosaur BBQ, and the City Station mixed-used housing and retail development sited on unused city property came to Troy, along with a number of small businesses thanks to Harry. As mayor, Harry set in motion the $30 million redevelopment of downtown’s Monument Square, supported the conversion of the former Stanley’s store into luxury apartments and a new hardware store, and development of the lofts at Powers Park in Lansingburgh. To protect city taxpayers, Harry introduced three budgets that did not raise taxes, and kept tax increases below the rate of inflation. As legislator, Tutunjian has supported the state tax cap, and shared services agreements that have generated a savings for taxpayers. He supported a restructuring of county finances that will save $800,000 and reductions in spending in the legislative offices. When a string of dangerous arsons threatened residents and safety, Tutunjian and Bauer helped organize a reward fund to gain information to bring those responsible to justice. He has also supported safeguards to prevent fraud and abuse in social services programs. Tutunjian invested in Troy 15 years ago with the purchase of a building in the downtown. Today, that building houses Francesca’s, a popular café operated by his wife Francesca. ~ Submitted by, Richard Crist

Dear Averill Park Community Members, A mailer regarding the bus referendum, as well as transfer of land to the Town of Poestenkill, will be arriving over the next few days. A public hearing on these referendums will take place at 6:00 on October 23, in the High School Large Group Instruction Room, where the Board meetings take place. The public vote will occur on Tuesday, November 13th, from 7 am to 9 pm on both items. The State Education Department (SED) has provided feedback on our submitted Annual Professional Performance Review plan. The requested modifications were made and the plan resubmitted. We are hopeful SED will approve the revised plan. At the October 9th Board of Education meeting, agreements with owner’s representatives, architect, and bond counsel were approved to begin developing a possible capital project. The invaluable feedback provided by the Long Range Planning committee last October is serving as the foundation of the project. Any proposed project will be put to the public for a vote, potentially in May of 2013. An independent audit was conducted on the district’s financial statements from the last year. The Board is happy to report that, apart from one minor area, the district received very high marks for their accounting practices. Our hats go off to Michael Ouimet and his financial team. The board is looking to establish a strategic planning group comprised of interested community members. The intent of this group is to assist the district with mapping out vision and goals for the next five years. Please look for more information in the near future. The next board meeting is on Tuesday, October 23rd, in the High School Large Group Instruction room. Additional information on all these items are on the district website: http://www.averillpark.k12.ny.us/. ~ Averill Park Board of Education
