Hello, my name is Meta Reid, a candidate for Brunswick’s Town Board. I am running not because I am a Democrat, although I am (I come from a hard working family of union workers and grocery clerks who benefited from Democratic policies such as Social Security). I am running not because I am a woman, although I am. I am not a career politician; I have never run for political office and have not served on committees appointed by local politicians (likely a plus, rather than a negative). I have been told, rather often, that I do not have a chance of winning this election because the opposition has more registered voters. The opposition surely has more money for campaigning than I can muster. So, why did I choose to engage this campaign? I did so for some rather simple reasons. First, Brunswick is my home. I plan on living in Brunswick for many decades. I, like many of you, have vested interests in Brunswick’s progress. Other than an interest in the good governance, I have no other vested interests. My goal is to serve all of the citizens of Brunswick, not just some outside developers. Many years ago, the Town Board was dominated by Democrats. Then, a few under-financed Republicans challenged the establishment. They won and eventually gained total control of the Town’s governance, without elected opposition, for the last 20 years. Those Republican challengers ran on the platform that good governance demanded change from one party rule. I agree, and it is again time to part from one party rule. When attending Town Board meetings, you notice only a few citizens attend, there are no investigative reporters and there is no reasoned discussion about spending thousands of tax payer dollars. Although we trust Board members to work toward the common good, opposition candidates are needed to verify such trust. At the local level, there is no other institutional way of verifying our trust. I will work for you. I will address problems. I pride myself on being a problem-solver. ~ Submitted by Meta Reid, Candidate for Brunswick’s Town Board

5K RACE & WALK at HVCC - BRINGING AWARENESS TO MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES Hudson Valley Community College will hold its fifth annual Race Away Stigma 5K Race and Fun Walk on Saturday, October 19, at 10 a.m. to promote awareness of mental health issues among college students and the associated stigma. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the race/walk begins at 10 a.m. An awards ceremony with refreshments follows at 11 a.m. The race entry fee is $20, payable in advance, or $25 payable at the race. Register by calling Hudson Valley’s Center for Counseling and Transfer at (518) 629-7176 or at www.hvcc.edu/cct. With more than one in five Americans affected by mental illness, it is not uncommon for depression, anxiety and other more serious conditions to arise during the college years. While counseling is readily available and can be immediately beneficial, many do not seek much-needed help because of the stigma associated with mental illnesses. Equinox, a nonprofit community organization that provides services to those dealing with mental illness, chemical dependency, domestic violence and homelessness, maintains a network of mental health volunteers on campuses to work with students. “This is the fifth year of the race. And, in this time, we think we have made great strides toward making our community aware that there is help for mental illness and that there is no shame in seeking it,” said Larry Ellis, associate director of student development for the Center for Counseling and Transfer.

As legislative representatives of District 3, including the towns of Brunswick, Pittstown and Schaghticoke, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the September 11, 2013 legislative meeting. Work continues on the extension of county sewer lines to Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. A number of residents have noticed work along Columbia Turnpike near Regeneron in East Greenbush. This project will allow for the expansion of Regeneron and the creation of 300 new jobs, and hopefully help spur other job creation projects. The Legislature approved funds for the repair of equipment used by the county Highway Department and purchase of materials for the completion of county road repair and improvement projects in 2013. The meeting was the second one to fall on September 11 since the terrorist attacks of 2001. We paused for a moment of silence and Chairman Martin Reid gave brief remarks about those lost on that day. The legislative chambers continue to include a flag with the slogan “Never Forget”, which helps us remember the events of September 11, 2001 and those called to service since the attacks. We recognized Grace Bulger of Brunswick for her years of service as a volunteer at the Van Rensselaer Manor. Grace has led rosary prayer services for fifteen years at the Manor, and encouraged everyone at the legislative meeting to find the time to volunteer and make a difference. We also recognized October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Rensselaer County. The Legislature is also supporting efforts by Legislator Fiacco and his wife Dena, a breast cancer survivor, to raise funds to help find a cure and raise awareness of the need for early testing and detection. Resident homeowners who currently receive the Basic STAR property tax exemption are required by the state to re-register this year to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and beyond. Registration is continuing through Dec. 31, 2013 and can be accomplished via the state website www.tax.ny.gov. Residents are welcome to contact us at the legislative offices by writing to the Rensselaer County Legislature, 1600 7th Avenue, Troy, NY 12180 or by e-mailing us via the official legislative website at www.rensselaercounty.org.

For the most part, Brunswick is a nice place to live. The question is: Will it continue to be a nice place? Nearly every adult in the Town must drive a vehicle to shop, go to work, and attend recreational events. It follows from that simple fact that traffic management should be a prime concern of those who plan for and preside over the Town. With respect to traffic, a measure of the success of the planners and governors of the Town is how smoothly traffic moves on Hoosick Road. The planners and governors of the Town for the last 20 years has been Republicans, i.e., the same people who will continue to be on the Town’s Board unless you elect some political newcomers, including me. My name is Norman Goodell, a conservative Democrat who is running for Brunswick’s Town Board. The Town is rolling hills with, of course, valleys. We get snow and rain, sometimes a lot of it. It follows that runoff, our watershed, should be an important consideration of those who plan for and preside over the Town. Surely, those who approve plans for development of the Town should manage runoff so that it does not adversely affect homes. A measurement of watershed management is the number of people who complain about those problems and get no relief. Town Boards deal with zoning, planning for development, maintaining roads, encouraging enterprise, safe drinking water, adequate fire protection and providing services such as ball diamonds and libraries. They are not about whether we should start wars, have stricter gun control, or the many other national and state issues. The current Board members seem to be directing your attention toward national and state issues rather than how well they are doing with respect to issues such as traffic management and watersheds. We expect them, at the very least, not to make local problems worse. The Town needs new perspectives, a new approach. My experiences as a soldier, a small business owner, and a volunteer fireman have trained me to be a problem solver. ~ Submitted by Norman Goodell, Candidate for Brunswick’s Town Board

Hi, I’m Flower! I’m a friendly female kitty that was abandoned in Guilderland. I’m still looking for a good home. You may have seen me in this space before as I was here last summer with my sister, who has since been adopted. I’ve really been patient and I keep hoping it’ll be my turn soon! I’m 4 years old and, as you can see in this picture, I’m decked out in soft black & white fur. For more information on Flower, please contact the following Purrfect Companions’ representative: Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties. purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Please use this phone number ONLY for adoption purposes! Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. Our adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Saturdays and Sundays at Petco, Northway Mall, Albany NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties! We may have one that is just “PURRFECT” for you!
