NAMI RENSSELAER ADDS A FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP IN AVERILL PARK The worst part of having a family member with mental illness is the stigma and loneliness. If we told our family and friends that our loved one had cancer or other serious disease, they would be surrounding us with support, cooking meals, and doing anything to make our life a little easier. When we talk to others about mental illness, it is almost like we said we had a serious contagious disease. No one wants to talk about it and many times, we suffer alone. We offer a place you can talk without judgment and get some much needed support. We understand because we are peers… we all have someone who is suffering from the effects of mental illness. Nothing is taboo and we have lots of information/ brochures to share. SUPPORT IS FREE… You don’t have to “sign up” and you come and go as you need to. Please join as at either location or at both. Our newest location is The Church of the Covenant (the Round Church) on Route NY 43 in Averill Park on the Third Wednesday of each month, starting on September 17th. We meet 6:30pm to 8:00pm. We will continue to hold our bi-monthly Support Group meetings at the SUNYA School of Public Health, One University Place, Rensselaer, NY 12144 on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Again, this group meets 6:30pm to 8pm. If you would like more information on our support groups, or just need to vent prior to a meeting, please call Mary Beth at 5886949 or Mary at 227-6701.

“DEATH OF A BLACKHEART” MURDER MYSTERY BENEFIT DINNER

AMANDA’S JOURNEY FOUNDATION CARNIVAL FAMILY FUN DAY On September 22nd, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Amanda’s Journey Foundation will present a carnival-themed Family Fun Day at Dedrick Recreation Center on Snyder’s Lake in North Greenbush. The event will feature games, food, and entertainment, including hours of live music. Admission is $5 for adults & $3 for children 10 and under. The event is a fundraiser for the local non-profit and will help build awareness about diseases of the Mitochondria, genetic disorders that can often be fatal. The foundation is named after Amanda Perrotta, a Rensselaer County girl whose courageous fight against Mitochondrial Depletion Syndrome inspired all those who knew her. After their daughter’s passing, Amanda’s parents helped found AJF, and her mom Jacki became a volunteer representative for the United Mitochrondrial Disease Foundation, the nation’s premier “Mito” organization. In June, she and AJF volunteer Sonya Macmillan traveled to the national UMDF conference in Maryland and lobbied on Capitol Hill. This year’s event features the Doherty family of Columbia County, who have three children with “Mito”. For more information on the Carnival Family Fun Day, please visit the Amanda’s Journey Foundation on Facebook or www.amandasjourney.org. E-mail them at amandasjourney08@gmail.com or call (518) 279-4327.

PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION AT THE TROY PUBLIC LIBRARY The Troy Public Library is pleased to present “Paranormal Investigation with The Albany Paranormal Research Society (APRS),” on Monday, October 8th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Library. The APRS, a proud member of the TAPS Family, is a NYS Not for Profit paranormal investigation group based in Albany, NY that dedicates its time to researching and investigating claims of paranormal activity in people’s homes and businesses. They do not go into a location to prove a haunting exists, but rather to find a natural or science- related reason to what people may be experiencing. There are times, though, when occurrences cannot be explained by those means. Join us for a special presentation by members of the Albany Paranormal Research Society as they discuss paranormal investigations, learn about the equipment used on their investigations and experience some great evidence captured during their cases. This program is free and open to the public, but please call the library at 274-7071, or register online at www.thetroylibrary.org. Troy Public Library is located at 100 Second Street, Troy.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT COWS? Cows, Cows, and more cows, what do you know about cows. Well, I know a lot from being around cows my whole life so I thought that I would share some fun facts about cows with you. The average dairy cow will drink 30 gallons of water each day or a bath tub full. Why so much water, well cows must drink lots of water to produce milk. Cows eat up to ninety pounds of feed a day. From grass to soybeans to corn, cows eat it all. Cows are herbivores, so they eat a lot of plants. The most common feed for cows is silage, which is corn, stalks, leaves, kernels and all, cut up into smaller pieces for the cows. Farmers work with nutritionists to develop a balanced diet for their cows. The cow’s diet is very important to the farmer, so the cows can produce milk. On an average day dairy cows will spend eight hours every day eating. Cows are a ruminant animal, which means they digest food differently than us. Cows have four compartments in their stomach, each compartment having its own job. Cows only have bottom teeth and they have 32 total teeth. Cows are big animals so they must eat and drink a lot to produce a pure and wholesome product, milk. ~ Courtney Luskin, Rensselaer County Dairy Princess
