SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL YOUNG FARMERS Rensselaer County 4-H will be holding their annual livestock auction on Monday, September 2nd (Labor Day), at the Schaghticoke Fair in the judging arena at 7 PM. Come support your local young farmers by attending this auction and consider being a buyer. There will be a variety of animals that will be ready for processing or entering your home flock or herd from market lambs and poultry to dairy replacement heifers. If you are not in need of something for your freezer or field, consider purchasing and donating to the Regional Food Bank. All purchases would be tax deductible. The Livestock Auction started years ago as a means to provide youth with a “real life” agricultural business experience. Participating youth sign a “Quality Assurance Pledge” . This project encourages youth to raise a high quality animal for milk or meat, follow ethical standards in animal care and representation, foster entrepreneurial spirit, increase communication skills, and increase fiscal responsibility. Additionally, youth are exposed to the science behind management practices and handling. For more information on the Rensselaer County 4-H Auction, contact the CCE office of Rensselaer County at 272-4210. Hope to see you on Labor Day at the Auction! CCE is an equal opportunity employer and programmer.

DOH’S FAD: KEY COMPONENT OF WATERSHED’S FUTURE Congressman Chris Gibson (NY-19) released the following statement :”Throughout my district, it is clear that we need to better manage flood mitigation strategies for our waterways. Repeatedly, we have seen devastating flooding that has caused almost unprecedented destruction. We cannot continue on this trajectory without changing course. “Critical to these efforts is the improved management of the New York City Watershed. We need policies that work and ensure not only the conveyance of clean water to New York City, but equitable treatment of our Upstate communities to prevent flooding and advance their own economic interests. An updated FAD is an integral part of this. Unfortunately, like much of the historical precedent for Watershed management, the FAD has not yet been subject to public review and broad stakeholder input. This is unacceptable, and I urge expanded discussions and a comprehensive review when the FAD is ultimately released. My goal, as it’s been since I was first elected, is to advocate for my constituents and help achieve a fair resolution.” Background on the Filtration Avoidance Determination (FAD): A key component of the Watershed agreement is the Filtration Avoidance Determination or FAD first issued in 1997. The FAD allows NYC to avoid filtering its water at an estimated cost of over 10 billion dollars by supplying clean water from its upstate partners (stakeholders) to the residents of NYC. A review of the agreement was due to be released in early 2012. As of August 6, 2013, it had not yet been released for input from the stakeholders or their representatives. There is a growing frustration expressed by many elected officials and relevant stakeholder organizations that they are not being included in this review process. The State Department of Health is leading the FAD Review process, with input from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Background on Watershed Advisory Group (WAG): Since his election to represent the 19th Congressional District (includes the entire West of the Hudson Watershed), Congressman Gibson formed the WAG to gather and evaluate all facts regarding the Watershed. WAG discussions with stakeholders are ongoing across the towns and counties that are in or adjacent to the defined Watershed footprint. The WAG goal is to build consensus among the participants and unity among the stakeholders in the delivery of their needs and goals. Local residents looking to become involved in the WAG can do so here: http://gibson.house.gov/watershed/.

AUTHOR JENNY MILCHMAN SHARES PATH TO PUBLICATION at SL LIBRARY On Wednesday, September 18th, at 7pm Jenny Milchman will be at the Sand Lake Town Library to discuss her book “Cover of Snow” (published by Ballantine) and her long path to publication. Set in the Adirondack Mountains, “Cover of Snow” is a suspenseful first novel about a husband’s apparent suicide and a grieving wife who wants to understand how this could happen. The novel was inspired in part by an experience she had as a child, when a babysitter confessed to Milchman one night that he was planning to kill himself. Because she told her parents when they returned, the babysitter was found, and saved. “That experience was formative,” she remembers. “In years to come, I felt terrified that the decision had been left in my eight-year-old hands.” Milchman eventually started a career as a psychotherapist. And while her expert background influences her writing, so does the work of literary greats such as Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, and Nancy Pickard, who describes Milchman’s debut as “absorbing from start to finish.” Sand Lake Town Library is located behind Town Hall at the intersection of 66 and 43. All are welcome to attend, and light refreshments will be served.

The Rensselaer Plateau is an extraordinary environmental and economic resource of about 115,000 acres that includes the fifth largest forest in New York State and endless opportunities for recreation, tourism, commerce and traditional living. The Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (RPA), established in 2006, is a diverse group of organizations and people seeking to conserve and protect the forested character of the Rensselaer Plateau and the many economic and environmental benefits it provides. A grassroots organization, the RPA is people living in the area who share a common interest in ensuring that future generations will experience and value the many benefits of the plateau. A Community Forest is a community-managed forested area owned by a municipality or another organization that provides benefits to the local community, such as management for timber harvesting, educational programs for adults and children, and recreational opportunities. The Rensselaer Plateau Alliance intends to facilitate the establishment of a Community Forest on the Rensselaer Plateau. The RPA seeks to establish a Community Forest Committee, and is reaching out to community members to request your help in this important venture. A public meeting, co-sponsored by the Zion’s United Church of Christ of Taborton, will be held on Wednesday, September 11th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Zion Church’s Meeting Hall (741 Taborton Road, Sand Lake, NY 12153). The meeting will provide additional information about community forests and the responsibilities of the committee. To establish a Community Forest, the Committee will work together on a variety of tasks, such as identifying appropriate land, creating a plan for longterm management costs and funding sources, and developing educational programs. Attending this meeting would not require that you join the committee, but at the end of the meeting, you will have the opportunity to become a member of the Community Forest Committee. Please consider joining the RPA in this important and valuable community venture. We hope to see you at the meeting. Keep informed of the many activities going on with RPA or the more than 30 Alliance organizations by checking out our new data-base driven calendar of events at http:// renpa.azurewebsites.net/.
