Maccio Physical Therapy, the area’s only certified McKenzie Spine and Extremity Clinic, is celebrating its 25th year anniversary! Joseph G. Maccio, MA, PT, DipMDT, is the only Diplomat of MDT in the Capital Region. Dr. Joseph R. Maccio, DPT has returned to the region and has completed all of the required coursework and the examination process for certification in the McKenzie Institute International. The McKenzie Method, also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), is a philosophy of active patient involvement and education for back, neck and extremity problems. The clinic certification process ensures the highest quality of MDT care available. The MDT approach differs significantly from traditional physical therapy as the evaluation process itself quickly determines whether or not a rapidly reversible condition exists. We often see patients who have tried conventional physical therapy without success. The process is simple and often leads to outstanding results. The effectiveness of early intervention mechanical diagnosis and therapy prevents unnecessary surgeries, or expensive and invasive diagnostic procedures. Centralization is the hallmark of the McKenzie Method and a trained MDT therapist can determine whether you are a centralizer or not. There are thousands of people with back and neck pain who have simply never been evaluated for the centralization phenomenon. MDT care demonstrates a significant reduction of recurrence rates and requires fewer visits. If you or someone you know experience back, neck or chronic extremity pain that has not responded to other treatment methods, it is advisable that you find a qualified MDT provider in your area. New York State has Direct Access and in most cases you do not need a referral from a physician for an initial evaluation or treatment. For more information, please visit our website at www.macciophysicaltherapy.com or the McKenzie Institute website at www.mckenziemdt.org.

www.countrytruevalue.com FIRE VICTIMS APPRECIATE SUPPORT & DONATIONS On Monday, February 21, 2011, our family experienced a tragic fire which destroyed our home. We would like to thank and acknowledge the Troy and Watervliet Fire Departments, along with the EMT’s and everyone who helped our family that day. We would like to thank the American Red Cross, Catholic Central High School and the Franklin Plaza Best Western along with their helpful staff for their support. Our thanks also to: Mayor Harry Tutunjian, Judge Christopher Mair, Councilmen Mark McGrath and Ken Zalewski and Carmella Mantello. We would like to thank all who attended the fundraiser organized by Bob DeMeo, Nora Dywer and Susan Dywer which was held at Nichi’s Restaurant. Many people from the community came to support our family, along with many local restaurants, businesses, Churches, family and friends who contributed to the success of the fundraiser for us. We cannot begin to express what your donation and time means to our family. But more than the donation, our family greatly appreciated the thought behind the donation. There are no words to express how we feel. This time has been difficult for us, but knowing people like you eases the pain. Please know that we will not forget your kindness. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! ~With kind regards, The Gratton Family - Ed, Danette, Ryan, Devon, Taylor Gratton and Grandma Jean

THE BOOK AND MOVIE GROUP OF THE BRUNSWICK COMMUNITY LIBRARY The Book and Movie Group of the Brunswick Community Library meets on the third and fourth Fridays of each month at 12:30PM. The group first reads a book, then sees the movie and compares the two. Our book and movie for May will be “The Birds”. This movie is based on a short story by Daphne DuMaurier. Due to the fact that the story is so short, we will combine our meetings in May to one date. We will meet on May 20th. At that time, we will discuss the story and view the movie. The movie is very different from the story. Anyone interested is welcome to join us on that date. We serve a snack at our meetings and new members are always welcome. Future selections include “The Last of the Mohicans” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. For more information, you may call the Library at 2794023.

BRUNSWICK HISTORICAL SOCIETY UPCOMING PROGRAMS On Saturday, May 21st, at the Brunswick Historical Society headquarters in the Garfield School Building at 605 Brunswick Road at 1PM, our speaker will be Bob Jones. Mister Jones is a Brunswick resident who is also a nephew of our long-time member, Dorothy McChesney. Mr. Jones has written a book about his family. He will be discussing the writing of this book, and also, the process of gathering information for this book. This program is open to the public and as always admission to this program is free. Refreshments will be served following the program. Our program for June will be a field trip to the historic home of Cherry Hill, located at 523 1/2 South Pearl Street in Albany. Members should be aware that this tour involves two flights of stairs. Reservations should be made early; there is room for only 20 people. Admission is $3 per person. The date is June 21st and members may be able to car pool. For more specific information, regarding times, reservations etc, you may contact Phyllis Harrison at 279-9775. Both of these programs should prove to be very interesting and we urge you to plan on attending one or the other of these programs.

legislative representatives of District 3, including the towns of Brunswick, Pittstown and Schaghticoke, we are happy to provide residents with an update on actions taken at the April 12, 2011 legislative meeting. There have been a number of reports nationally and locally about possible misuse of taxpayer-funded ambulance services by residents receiving Medicaid. Legislators and legislative staff have started collecting information about instances of potential misuse in Rensselaer County of Medicaid-funded transports. In some cases, based on information gathered by the legislative review, persons received taxpayer-funded ambulance rides despite not having a serious or life-threatening illness or condition. Rides were given to people complaining of sore feet, headaches, intoxication and other minor reasons. With costs for programs like Medicaid and other mandated services reaching record levels, there is genuine reason for concern about these costs. We asked state officials to review the issue to help stop possible instances of misuse and will begin an inquiry if state action is not forthcoming. The information we have received is a concern, given costs to taxpayers for ambulance transport and hospital visits. The Legislature also supported State Assembly legislation requiring drug tests for any adults applying for public assistance. We also continued to urge state officials to adopt comprehensive reform of un-funded mandates during the current legislative session. The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that reasonable restrictions could be placed on protests and demonstrations at military funerals. There have been instances across the country where protestors have unfortunately decided to disrupt military funerals. The Legislature began consideration of a local law formulated at the suggestion of the New York State Association of Counties that places restrictions on protests at military funerals. Along with beginning consideration of legislation restricting protests at military funerals, legislators also asked the state to consider tougher penalties for instances where military memorials and gravesites are damaged. Legislators approved resolutions related to the repair and improvement of county roads. The Legislature also approved resolutions for maintenance of the county emergency communications system. We also welcomed representatives of Cornell Cooperative Extension to recognize their contributions during March, which was declared National Nutritional Month. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Residents are welcome to contact us at our legislative offices by writing to the Rensselaer County Legislature, 1600 7th Avenue, Troy NY 12180 or by e-mailing us via the official legislative website at www.rensselaercounty.org.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A NEW FAMILY EXPERIENCE THIS SUMMER?

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL AT ST. JUDE’S

Since 1877 the Fresh Air Fund has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from lowincome neighborhoods. YOU could be one of the volunteer host families in 13 Northeastern states and Canada who open their homes to inner-city children and give them the opportunity to escape the heat and noise of the crowded city streets. Children on first time visits are between the ages of six and 12 and stay for up to two weeks. Please join us at the William K. Sanford Town Library, Stedman Room, 629 Albany Shaker Road in Loudonville on Monday, May 16th, at 4:30PM to learn more about the program and hear from a local host. If you are unable to attend, but would like more information on becoming a Fresh Air fund host family, please contact Christine Fowler at 518-463-4300.

St. Jude the Apostle Church in Wynantskill will hold Vacation Bible School from July 11-15, 2011 (9AM to Noon) for ages 3-12 ($20.00 for 1 child, $10.00 for each additional child). Theme Overview is PANDAMANIA. No matter what station they’re exploring, kids will hear the daily Bible Point–and experience it in a new way! At PandaMania, the daily Bible Point is carefully integrated into each station’s activities to reinforce Bible learning. Each activity is an important part of kids’ overall learning experience—kind of like the pieces of a puzzle. From music to snacks and everything in between, each part of PandaMania VBS is intentionally designed to focus on the things that matter— connecting kids to God—and eliminating the things that don’t. It’s about preparing each child’s heart to receive the gospel message in an unforgettable way. It’s about enabling kids to share God’s love with others. It’s about why you do VBS. PandaMania VBS is intentionally designed to connect kids to God, create change in their hearts, and give them opportunities to share God’s love with others. Making Jesus real to kids. To join us for an adventure of a lifetime, please stop by St. Jude the Apostle Parish Office, or call 283-1162 for a registration form.

FREE HEARING CLINIC

On Saturday, May 21, 2011, the Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake will be sponsoring a wellness program at the Averill Park High School. AMBA Blood Screening will be offered for the $35.00 AMBA Blood Screening fee, plus a separate $5.00 donation at the door to the Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake. Please provide your physician’s name and address at the time of the call. For more information on the Kiwanis Club of Sand Lake, its projects, members, etc. please visit our website at http:// sandlakekiwanis.org, or email us at sandlakekiwanis@nycap.rr.com, or P.O. Box 535, West Sand Lake, NY 12196.
