HEAD’S UP TO RANCH HORSE TRAINING • Sunday, February 16th, 1 – 4:30 PM at the Saratoga 4-H Training Center, join us in an afternoon of fun and outstanding instruction from experts on the topics of head safety and avoiding head injury when working with horses and the discipline of ranch horses. Bob DeLorenzo and Dave Cukrovany will navigate through the ranch horse landscape and Drusilla Malavase will share information related to head injuries and concussion as it relates to equine activities. This information will be valuable to many involved with horses and is appropriate for all horse enthusiasts. All should dress appropriately. Part of the afternoon will be indoors, but much of it will be in the unheated indoor/outdoor arena depending on the weather. THE ENSLAVED VAN RENSSELAERS: SLAVERY AT CRAILO Join us on Saturday, February 22nd, from 11:00am-4:00pm to explore the lesser-known world of the enslaved Van Rensselaers that lived and worked at Crailo and the history of slavery in New Netherland and New York. Crailo will be open for special open-house style tours, featuring new interpretation of the cellar kitchen focusing on the role that enslaved people played at Crailo. This event marks the first phase in an ongoing project to interpret the Afro-Dutch experience in New Netherland and New York. This project was developed in conjunction with the Yale Public History Institute (http://www.yale.edu/glc/phi/) and includes new interpretation in Crailo’s permanent exhibit, a temporary exhibit set to open in 2015, associated events and programming. Averill Park Central School District is pleased to announce that Averill Park High School senior Macauley “Mac” Hoyt has been appointed to the United States Military Academy’s West Point Class of 2018. Hoyt, the son of Martin and Pamela Hoyt of Averill Park, has a current academic GPA of 90.77. He has taken Advanced Placement, Honors and Project Lead the Way courses throughout his high school career. In his acceptance letter from Lieutenant General Robert L. Caslen, Jr., Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point stated, “Your appointment to the Class of 2018 is an outstanding accomplishment. In gaining admission, you have demonstrated exceptional potential for future service to the U.S. Army and the nation. West Point’s education and training programs will give you the opportunity to fully develop that potential.” Hoyt served as class president during the 2009-10 school year and a tutor for “Math Tutor Mondays.” He was invited to the Columbia High School Student Leadership Conference in 2011. Hoyt’s interest in soccer is evident by the number of soccer activities he is involved in. He has played on the Averill Park High School Varsity Soccer Team since his freshman year and this year was made captain. Since 2010, Hoyt has played with the Albany Alleycats Soccer Club and is currently the captain. He’s participated in West Point’s Summer Soccer Camp since 2009 and Winter Soccer Camp since 2010. Hoyt works at Afrim’s Sports as a referee and counselor. Hoyt is involved in the 4-H Shooting Sports Club and his church. He has been a member of the 4-H Club since 2011 and is currently the president. At Brunswick Presbyterian Church, Hoyt is active in the youth group, serves as a leader for Vacation Bible School, assists with the food pantry and shovels during the winter months. He is also interested in robotics and engineering having participated in a Robotics and Digital Engineering summer camp in 2011 and an engineering class through RPI. Hoyt said one of his greatest achievements is his work with BronxWorks, an organization whose mission is to help individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being. There he created his own project dubbed the “Bronx Project” in which he created and organized a softball team as well as made the player jerseys.

In addition to serving as organist/choir director at First United Presbyterian Church in Troy, Fala maintains an active concert schedule throughout the region. ELKS NATIONAL AND STATE SCHOLARSHIPS Applications are now available for the Elks National Foundation and the New York State Elks Association scholarships. There are two types of Elks scholarships. The national scholarship is open to all New York State high school seniors. These seniors need not be the child of a member of the Elks. The state scholarships are for high school seniors whose parent is a member in good standing in the Order of Elks. Forms for these scholarships may be obtained online at the Elks website (www.Elks.org/enf/scholars). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York. FASNY announced a deadline extension - to February 21st - for firefighters to apply for the new 2014 semester. We urge all interested students to sign up, as time is quickly running out to apply for this free program.” Under FASNY HELP, an individual who hasn’t already achieved a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP studentvolunteer firefighter can pursue either on a full-time or part-time basis. Starting with the Fall 2013 semester, FASNY HELP has been expanded to cover online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP is made possible by a $4.2 million dollar U.S. Department of Homeland

CENTER BRUNSWICK UMC FINANCIAL AID GRANT for 2014 GRADUATES The Finance Committee of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church announced that it will award $1000 to a student to be selected from the Tamarac High School Class of 2014. The money may be used for any type of expenses related to further education. Students do not have to belong to this Church or any other church or religion to be eligible for this award. Interested students must apply for this award no later than April 1, 2014. Application forms can be obtained from the school’s guidance department or directly from the Church. This award is given in memory of Harold and Mabel Keyes, whose last will and testament created the trust that provides the funding for it. Harold and Mabel were prominent members of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church for many years. Mabel taught in the Brunswick schools that preceded Tamarac, and continued teaching Sunday School for many years after she retired. Through this award, her love of helping young people learn and grow will continue to reach the youth of our community. NATURE WRITING WORKSHOPS at DYKEN POND Paying Attention Among the Trees: A Winter Walk and Nature Writing Experience will be held on Sunday, February 16 and March 16 from 1pm – 3pm. Diane Kavanaugh-Black will lead participants on a meditative woodland walk, followed by writing with intention in a cozy, woodstove-heated cabin. This workshop will inspire the creative process, whether you are a novice or already working on your own writing project. Sign-up for one or both sessions. $15. $12 for members. ABBOTT NAMED TO SUNY CORTLAND PRESIDENT’S LIST Lauren Abbott, of North Greenbush, majoring in New Media and Web Design has been placed on the President’s List for the Fall 2013 semester at the State University of New York College at Cortland. To be eligible for the President’s List, a student must be fulltime, and have earned at least an A- in all courses. Lauren is a graduate of Averill Park High School.

Learn all about surviving the cold winter on Wednesday, February 19, from 1pm – 3pm. Make a snow shelter, build a campfire and practice other survival skills. Hot chocolate and campfire will be enjoyed both days. Fee for either program is $1. Snowshoe rentals available both days for $5.
