KEEP BUSY WITH FUN SNOW DAY ACTIVITIES

FREE MOVIE NIGHT

* Put out bird seed or a suet block and feed the neighborhood birds. Compare the different species that come to grab an easy meal. Artistickids can sketch what they see by looking out the window. * Shovel a shallow path in the snow around the yard to create a snow maze. Build snow blinds, behind which kids can hide. * Gather winter nature items, like pine cones and icicles. Look for frozen “fossils.” * Brew a thermos full of hot chocolate and go sit out with the neighbors who are probably going a bit stir crazy as well. * Check in on elderly friends and neighbors and offer to shovel their driveways and walkways, if necessary. * Pretend you are on a North Pole expedition and hike through the neighborhood in a quest to reach the summit of a mountain or to find a hidden treasure. * Use spray bottles or squirt bottles filled with water and food coloring to draw masterpieces in the snow. * Gather a clean patch of snow and pour maple syrup onto it. Allow to harden and then enjoy homemade maple candies.

“The Ultimate Life” will be shown at St. Timothy’s Church, 470 Winter Street Extension, North Greenbush on Friday, Jan. 17, at 6:30. Admission is free and so is the popcorn and soda. This is a prequel/sequel to our previously shown “The Ultimate Gift.” Starring Peter Fonda as the young “Red”. You will find this a very moving family film. Visit - www.theultimatelife.com

WRITER’S WORKSHOP Rensselaer County’s Troy Senior Center would like to invite you to join our Writer’s Workshop. The facilitator, Janet Chiefari, has had 6 books published, written for magazines and local newspapers. The framework of the monthly meeting is that each person reads what they have written and the other members critique, and make suggestions to clarify. Our running theme is the “seasons of our lives” - writing about events, holidays, experiences, etc. that can be passed on to children and grandchildren. This group is a stimulating, exciting incentive to get writing! Our next meeting will be January 23 at 1:00 pm. Call (518) 2705539 for more information.

Glenmont, NY – The holidays are over. Now is the perfect time to conduct a home inventory to make sure your new items are covered in the event of a loss says the Professional Insurance Agents of New York State Inc. Information about getting insurance for those holiday gifts is available from your professional, independent insurance agent. Contents coverage has special coverage limitation for items like jewelry, furs, and fine arts. These limitations vary by company and may not be enough to cover the total value of these items. Extra coverage called personal property “floaters” will provide specific insurance for the value of the insured property. Most insurance companies will require a homeowner to have the items appraised to determine the amount of coverage. “If you have a large amount of special items in your home, you should talk with your insurance agent about additional coverage.,” says Plafker. When insuring these valuables, it is helpful to have information such as a description of the items you would like covered, a list of any security devices you have in your home, and the amount of coverage you would like. If you have valuable items in your home, ask your insurance agent if those items would be covered in the event of a loss. PIANY is a trade association representing professional, independent insurance agencies, brokerages and their employees throughout the state.

Public Can Resume Purchasing Hunting, Fishing or Trapping Licenses and Reporting Game Harvests The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) new computerized sporting licensing system is operational, allowing sportsmen and sportswomen to conduct license transactions, Commissioner Joe Martens announced. The transition of hunter, angler and trapper data required a temporary shutdown for sales of hunting, fishing and trapping licenses, recreational marine fishing registrations and harvest game reporting. The data transfer has been completed and individuals can resume normal transactions and reporting on the new system. Individuals who were unable to report harvest data during the temporary shutdown were given a grace period for reporting of this data. With the system now operational, all harvest data that has not been reported must be submitted by January 20, 2014. Hunters, anglers, and trappers are able to purchase sporting licenses, stamps and permits: • at one of the nearly 1,500 locations across New York State; • via telephone (1-866-933-2257); or • via the internet at https://aca.dec.accela.com/dec/ “I encourage New Yorkers to utilize the new license system to purchase their sporting licenses, report any deer harvested during the system blackout period and enjoy the many outstanding outdoor activities available in New York State,” added Martens.

CO. CLERK MEROLA – I WILL NOT ISSUE ANY LICENSES TO ILLEGAL ALIENS – Pt. II Rensselaer County Clerk Frank J. Merola has pledged not to issue any driver’s license to illegal aliens from the Rensselaer County DMV and will aggressively lobby other clerks throughout the state to follow suit. Mr. Merola’s action is in response to a legislative initiative by downstate legislative members to reintroduce the controversial program originally proposed by former Governor Elliot Spitzer. “New York City liberal politicians have chosen once again to try and force through a law that was abandoned due to the outcry by New York State residents back in 2007.” Mr. Merola said, “Times have not changed, at least for me. I pledge that I will not issue a driver’s license to any illegal alien in any Rensselaer County DMV office and I will aggressively lobby my fellow clerks to once again take up the cause and follow suit.” Mr. Merola was at the spearhead of the opposition to Governor Spitzer’s attempt to grant illegal aliens licenses through administrative fiat calling the program just plain wrong. The New York State Association of County Clerks (NYSACC) voted overwhelmingly in opposition to the proposal with a dozen other clerks following Mr. Merola’s lead and pledging not to issue licenses from their county DMVs. The widespread opposition eventually forced former Governor Spitzer to abandon his plan, something that Mr. Merola intends to see the current proponents do as well. “County Clerks operate over 100 County and Satellite DMVs throughout the state and if my fellow Clerks agree not to issue these licenses, then these illegals will have to go to state DMV centers for processing if this is passed. I don’t think this half baked proposal will pass once people become aware of what New York City is trying to do. I am sure that Governor Cuomo and legislative leaders will listen to all New York State residents, the vast majority who oppose this policy, rather than the interests of a liberal but loud minority. I am sure that they will.”

We are so thankful to have SEFCU behind us and supporting local communities! It is help like this combined with the generosity of our community that we were able to provide 778 people, through monthly visits to the food pantry, with 37,404 meals this year! 110 families received Thanksgiving food baskets! We were able to help 139 families —395 children— with our holiday adoption program and free Santa Shop this Christmas. We were able to give out 67 new winter coats and countless other gently used coats. All of this would not be possible without the generosity of organizations like SEFCU and our incredible neighbors!
