When I decided to seek the position of District Attorney for Rensselaer County a little over four years ago, my wife and I thought long and hard about why we were committing the time and energy to the task. Our two daughters were 10 and 7. There would be a lot of time away from family. The magnitude of the impact of the office of the District Attorney however cannot be understated. The job is not about box scores and bluster. The job is a lawyer’s job. Follow the rule of law, seek justice for those whose lives have been disrupted by those who prey upon our children, parents, and loved ones and do justice to the worst of the worst. The office I lead as your District Attorney has won convictions in some of the most complex criminal cases I have seen in practicing criminal law in the Capital District for over twenty years: Infant Homicides; Serial Sex Offenders; Domestic Violence Homicides and Random Gang Assaults. I was personally about to begin selecting jurors in an eight year old double homicide case where two men were accused of brutally murdering two people in Troy in 2002, when DNA matched a new suspect. There were countless hours and volumes of work put into that case. We did not rush in. I made the call to dismiss the charges against the wrongfully accused. I directed the investigation that eventually convicted Michael Mosley of the killings that had haunted the parents of two murdered children and this community for nearly a decade. Mosley is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole. In the meantime, I’ve led a team of dedicated attorneys and investigators that have made the criminal justice system in this county work the way it is supposed to. I take pride in our work and our record is proof of our professionalism and effectiveness. I ask for your support and look forward to serving as your District Attorney for the next four years.

Letter to the Editor: If you are a Brunswick resident, you may have read the Fall Message from the Brunswick Town Supervisor. The Supervisor unveils an initiative to update the Town’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan. This is welcome news since it was requested by 2,000 residents 5 years ago and is required by State Law (Town Law Section 272-a.10). Generally, much of what the Supervisor says makes sense. Some things however, need clarification. The Supervisor’s Message says that a comprehensive plan is not by itself a legally enforceable document. Lets clarify. The Town of Brunswick has made it so that comprehensive plans are not enforceable. This is the result of the arguments by the Brunswick Town lawyers against Brunswick Smart Growth. BSG asked the court to look at whether the Town was violating State law by not updating the Comprehensive Plan and not updating its zoning ordinance as called for by the Comprehensive Plan. The court sided with the Town lawyers who argued the court should not even answer the questions asked. The court said it did not need to answer the questions because the Brunswick residents who brought the case were not harmed any different from anyone else in the Town. Of course, no one could because the issues affected everyone. The result is a legal precedent established by the Brunswick Town lawyers that says no citizen of New York can ask the courts to determine if their town government is complying with its comprehensive plan unless they are somehow harmed differently from everyone else. Even if there is something wrong with a comprehensive plan that harms everyone in a town, this means no one can do anything about it. The sad part is the Town of Brunswick used taxpayer money to establish a legal precedent that prevents taxpayers from asking the courts if their government is following the law. Does this make sense to you? Maybe Brunswick can explain why taxpayer money was spent to prevent the court from answering the questions its residents asked. Maybe Brunswick should explain that to all New York residents. ~Joe Durkin, Brunswick Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

NINA NICHOLS RUNNING FOR TROY CITY COUNCIL AT-LARGE I proudly chose to live in the City of Troy and to raise our three children (Micah, Moses and Joseph) here because Troy is such an interesting, beautiful and very friendly community. I love Troy and intend to help make it better— safer, cleaner, greener and more prosperous. I am a Democrat and Working Families candidate for City Council At-Large and pleased to have earned the endorsement of the Troy Uniformed Firefighters Association, the Troy Police Benevolent Association, the National Association of Letter Carriers, the Troy Area Labor Council, The Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee and the SEIU 1199. Thank you my good friends for your support. My long and hard training to become Senior Pastor of Downtown Troy’s Christ Church, United Methodist has taught me to be a careful listener and to engage in discussion that is informed, thoughtful and civil. I know we can disagree among ourselves on important issues without being disagreeable or disrespectful to each other. I have been able to show leadership skills as National Legislative Coordinator for the Methodist Federation for Social Action, as President of NY Interfaith Power and Light (an environmental education and advocacy organization) and recently as a Board Member of the ARC of Rensselaer County. These proven experiences will be useful in building the consensus needed to maintain our city services while attracting new residents and businesses. I am privileged to have the honor of asking for your vote on November 8 for Troy City Council At-Large.

LEGAL NOTICE EMFD#1 - workshop The Board of Fire Commissioners of the Eagle Mills Fire District #1 located at 627 Brunswick Road, Eagle Mills, NY will hold a workshop at the station on November 6, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. Laura D. Wright, District Secretary

It appears that the Town of Brunswick is finally going to comply with State Law (see State Town Law Section 272-a.10) and update its comprehensive plan. Depending on how the Town Board conducts the update, Brunswick residents may have a

FOR SALE chance to participate in shaping the policy for future development within the Town. Citizen participation is also State Law (see State Town Law Section 272-a.1(c)). This is good news considering the history on non-compliance with this Town Board. In February, 2001, a Town Comprehensive Plan was adopted with omission of an

Chuck Haynes, Candidate for Town of Brunswick Supervisor

update timeline. Shortly Kathy Kodela-Betzinger, thereafter, numerous Candidate for Town Board development plans were underway which would have resulted in an increase of more than 30% of the population in the Town of Brunswick. The sizable increase is completely contrary to the 2001 Comprehensive Plan. In 2005 more than 2,000 residents of Brunswick signed a petition asking that the Comprehensive Plan and zoning regulations be Amanda Engelke, evaluated before a series of Candidate for Town Board amendments to the zoning ordinance be adopted. The residents were ignored and the zoning amendments requested by the developers have been enacted. As this new Comprehensive Plan is developed, one can only hope that the update process will include a survey of the residents, similar to the survey conducted in 1999. Moreover, the process should also include long term zoning that cannot be easily altered or changed. Brunswick citizens want restrictions to PDD’s (Planned Development Districts). Based on past experience, the question is; who controls the update – three members of the Town Board or residents? We need a change before it’s too late. On Tuesday, Nov 8 - ELECT Chuck Haynes – Brunswick Town Supervisor Amanda Engelke – Brunswick Town Board Kathy Kodela-Betzinger – Brunswick Town Board • Accountable, Responsive, Open-Door Leadership • Fair Treatment of All Citizens • Growth through tough, even handed zoning enforcement • Transparency of Town business and finances • Business friendly & Farm friendly town policies Submitted by

Readers Digest called Dental Assisting one of the “RECESSION PROOF” CAREERS in the March 2009 issue!

His priorities include: Fiscal oversight and budget stability, increase opportunities for owner occupied housing, protect and preserve existing buildings, assure public safety, promote Sage/ RPI HVCC participation and visibility, support existing business initiatives and develop a Citywide Business plan. What are your goals for your position? Most importantly diminish the sharp partisan politically charged environment. I’d do this by giving all persons their proper respect and dignity by listening well, withhold dismissive responses, and trying to approach City Council business by thoroughly reviewing positions and proposals. I will apply objective criteria to directions and work hard to educate myself about all matters before us through reading, interviewing, site visits etc. I’d use my best judgment in voting- not cronyism or alignments. Paid for by Friends of Bob Doherty I LOVE MY LIBRARY SHOPPING DAY Market Block Books, 290 River Street, is graciously hosting a fundraising event for the Troy Public Library on Sunday, November 6th, from 1PM-4PM. NOVENA PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine .This prayer must be published after the favor is granted D.A.J.
